Gaia Association, Ethiopia

Clean, safe ethanol stoves for refugee homes

Milkyas Debebe

Award funded by the Waterloo Foundation

Refugees in Ethiopia, as in many countries, rely on fuelwood for cooking. Women who spend long hours collecting fuelwood outside refugee camps are frequently attacked, and there is extensive deforestation. The Gaia Association has provided ethanol-fuelled stoves to 1,780 refugee families, enabling clean, comfortable cooking and preventing wood use. The ethanol is produced from locally-available molasses, a sugar by-product which previously caused pollution. The Gaia Association is starting to supply stoves and ethanol for other refugee camps and also for new housing developments in Addis Ababa, and a local factory is producing the stoves. Stoves are also being introduced in Addis Ababa, and local manufacture has started.

Here we go, another change and improvement by the Ethiopian inventor. I’m really happy to see the invention of this stove. Now it is time for those refugees to go out and implant as many seedlings as they can. They destroyed all the trees and they have to replace it for the sake of their children.

Good job! Hopefully, the government will stand next to those who invented the stove so that they will be in a position to export their product.
No more waste molasses from that sugar factory. Halleluiah

Cheers and God bless Ethiopia.

Ethanol is considered green but not when producing it, yes when importing and using, a big amount of Ethanol fuel is produced in the USA from corn, such industry is opening one every other week, but not dependable in order to cover the whole US fuel need, as it appeared early this year on some research "Even if we use all the corn we have in the USA it will cover only 7% of our total need highly contributing in pollution and is part of act against clean air.
The US ETHANOL producers them selves are not depending on the profit they are getting from their production but the federal fund of over 8 Billion dollars which will not be there for ever, most organizations concerned about clean air are still straggling to bring the issue to the American public in cutting the fund, possible once Bush is out of office no such a thing will take a place.
In the Ethiopian case, the only treasure we can present to the world is our clean environment which so far is not costing no body, but if we already start producing ETHANOL fuel, we are just acting against our clean air for some thing which will not satisfy our basic need.
Isn't there a village in Northern Ethiopia using solar generator for power and wind generator? that is what we call green any thing polluting to the air is going to be another problem for the countries future, it is better to plat trees and use them as a fire wood rather than having a chemical polluting to the air and contaminate the environment then no way to see green plan.
Who ever start this project must think twice and act no before it will take our clean air away.
STOP POLLUTING!!

wow, I Wonder how many of us are aware of the importance of this invention. this might sound like a toy story to some, specially to people in the developed world but to ethiopia a country that has suffered from many avoidable natural disasters, it is a huge step forward in terms protecting the declining forest, improving people way of life and also saves a bit of hard currency spent on importing the most expensive commodity fuel.. I hope the Government of Ethiopia would take this matter seriously and consider distributing the stove to every household in ethiopia, then it makes sense to prosecute people for cutting trees. I am excited for my country which I think is breaking through despite all the conspiracy against it. and there is only little irritant the poor rats can do! God bless ethiopia!

Thank you for extending the information on possibly comparative value, but definately the disadvantage in the long and short run. As soon as I saw pollution, my next question was, does not all the smoke from wood fire cooking create pollution? You answered the question and I settle for your response.

What a great idea! I would like to see this program implemented on a national level. Thew sugar factory by-product helping our main homefuel shortage is a great step towards the age of non-wood energy source. I am extremely ecastatic about this news and I commend all who participated in the project. It is a win-win siutuation.
As for Mr. Master Mind, ofcourse if you try to use corn as ethanol source the production has more carbon emission before the final product- Ethanol. However, in the case of sugar mollases it is the by-productof sugar production. Brazil, one of the wolrd's biggest sugar producers has a great system of using Ethanol even as fuel for cars, thus selling it along side regular gas in every gas stations in the country. It is one of the good alternative energy source of the future for our planet.

Yours is another source of "fact based" opinion, and I hope more will be coming from others.

One advantage is in reducing the heavy labor of women carrying twigs on their backs and the daily grind of laborious wood cutting for cooking. If westerners do wood cutting, it is to worm up their homes seasonally (average three months a year) or camp fire. Besides, it is readily available in several stores. Over all, it is also more laborious to cook with fire as it is the daily reality of Ethiopian food. Still, the pollution part is some thing to know more about.

I LOVE the idea but I don't know how every think that giving this stove for free would solve our problem...

In fact if we sale this stove for markup price then only we will solve our problem.

Now work with me if the stove cost 100 birr we will sale it for 2000birr a markeup of 200%

This markup help to develop more stove then giving the stove for free.

Think about it every time we sale one stove we get money to make 20 more now we sale those 20 stove for 2000 birr each we get 40,000 birr again if we use 40,000 birr to make 400 stove we can sale it for 800,000 birr. As we see we can build the capital very eaily

Now the question is where the poor can get 2000 birr? The simple answer is from bankBank we give you a loan for 2000birr you can pay your loan in samll amount every month.

Now you will ask me where the poor can get the job to pay even the small amount... here is the kicker by inventing A JOB for them they can plant tree, they can dig hole for water, the can build road and house they can build dam they can do many thing for the exchange of their monthly paymant.

Now you will tell me how about they could not pay or run away with the money... again the simple answer to this one is make them pay the deopest such is 100 birr and that cover the whole cost and we don't lose any thing if they run with the money... beside if they don't cut tree that will benfit us all...

My idea look very simple but that is how capitalizism work... only profit driven system take us out of poverty.... not free gift..

That is a dream come true, Congratulations Gaia!
Now, let policy follow this, to create standard for households- each household to use the new technology. Let government support the agency which are working on this and related things by securing the distribution of both the stove and ethanol (burning oil).

For us, it is not only firewood that is a problem, it is also the kind of food we cook; especially, the things needed for "tela" "Areke" ( traditional drinks).
Let another creativity follow this for an independent agency to provide " Asharo" " Traditional bread ( made of wheat) and some other stuff that tempt people to get stick to status quo perhaps by undermining the new stove. There should be a complex network that support each other and narrow down the possibility of using charcoal or firewood.

Put Standard for at least big cities. This is like the effort made to plant two( three) trees for the millennium. This may relate to the standard of house construction to include mandatory stove in the house once the distribution of oil is ensured. Start with small scale and grow from there. Here in America what I observed is they are very serious about small things; they are awre of detail. At times, I feel that what I think less important is perceived as most important and I see a big deal is made out of what looks in my judgement irrelevant. What did I learn? All know what the big things are and conscious of making it happen, where problems are in the undermining of small things that may accuimulate and cause a big failure. Most of all, It is awakening- it puts all to be awre of what is going on. It changes how we think. Just give 2 minutes to reflect what Gaia did and how that can be expanded in networking with other services.
Let us hope!

It creats job, it changes the thinking process. I am always bothered how we as Ethiopians think- we shouldn't settle for the small thing; or we should not be " semonegna" We have the ability to think and think big.
Thanks again Gaia

I hope you will not bring up argument on this but some villages in Tigray are of course using a wind and solar generated power, do I really need to prove that to you ? I guess not since it is your responsibility to read and know more in deep about Ethiopia specially if you think you are stepping up to take responsibilities to pass it to the next generation.
That generation of course will be happy to take a clean air as well, in the country where Environment protection is unheard of, of course some body must step up and say some thing or do some thing, you seamed to be looking at a single ETHANOL stove, if sugar Molasses and some other last industrial products are going to maintain producing it, in just few years we will have 70 Million stoves and also more advanced ETHANOL producing industries, but if we start talking and taking action while the issue is so young to reach , yes we can make a difference, that goes also for misused or overused Ethiopian forest, land and natural resources, there is no money to buy clean weather as what Ethiopia have.
In passed 30 years Ethiopia lost over 70% of natural forest nothing to be replaced with it but draught and poverty, that is not going to be end of it some day our next generation will suffer from under ground water deposit, if amount of rain we get during the winter time is reduced of course the under ground water will reduce too then what? be part of "THE SARA DESERT"?
Ethiopian Environment need special attention given to it.
Thanks.

I know I am wasting my time but let me say this for the last time....

Did locally prodcued ethanol can be used for CAR too... instead of disal power?

This thing is how much we like this stove to success it will not successed because we still belive the govt or ngo will do it for us... just check the last input by

Mr.Teddy Chaka

He want the govt to take over the stove market No independent agency will not do it either.

My point is if we created independent agency we have to support them by money this means they will not work harder because they know the money is coming is but if we let it for the market if the saler did not work harder he will lose his money therefore he will work harder to make a profit....don't underestimet the power of saleperson to sale this producte if the are given a chance...

As of Now the NGO who created this stove only have money to give away 300 stove only while what we need is 8 million stove how in hell govt... can give away 8 million stove for free?

The only way out is the marke should handle this problem... how just read my input above how this market can work...

We sale the stove for 2000 birr markup price the buyer pay only 100 birr depost the cost of the stove.... they can't run away with the stove because they need ETHANOL every month therefore they have to pay their due every month to get their fuel this way we can creat an economy...

As I said the poor need ethanol every month but they have no JOB to make a paymant... now you got them... you creat JOB for them...in ayway they are willing to work in the jo b because they will spend the same amount of TIME LOOKING AND CARRYING FIREWOOD instead they can work real JOB THAT will give them
benfit to their people...

You might ask me where you can get the money to support this system my answer is we going to creat a loop system where we pay them the money for doing JOB and then we take away their money for giving them service such as fuel, food, cloth, road, dam, tree, education etc etc...

We can use some of the people to produce modern larage scale farming and we can use this product to pay the worker only to take awy from them by from of tax and serices that we provided for them...
road tax, eduction tax, health tax, income tax, and all can of tax bill electricty bill, telephone bill, water bill, waste water bill,
now do you see the LOOP... WE PAY THE WORKER AND WE TAKE AWAY THEIR MONEY BY FROM OF TAX AND BILL AT THE END OF THE MONTH we start all over again

We build their house and ask them to pay
Rent, you see the bill is endless so the payment to the worker...

still I feel this my put will be wasted here because I know for sure no body care I mena th the real power in Addis Ababa doesn't read this website and use this advice to imporve our county therefore why waste my time... after 10 years of putting my input on internet starting from Ethio.com doesn't chanage a thing why should I think it will change it now... just look this input nobody read other input they just put theirs without reading the other input and building on other input they just shout

Mr/ Mrs JAINK-MAIL

I agree with the logic of your first posting. It seems to answer very important questions like what? when?, and how? I agree with you that The Economy needs to be free of the control of Government.

What I am suggesting perhaps emphasizing is the creation of policy that ensure the continuity of this kind of work. This goes beyond the investment policy; this is like setting standard that may help independent instituitions/ companies to see a reason for their production- creating confidence in the market. When it comes to big changes like this, let us not forget the impact of political power. I am only seeking for the system with policies that encourage those who invest money in such market. Most of all , I would like to see Networking:the input of stove producers, agriculture initiatives, industrial outputs, trained citizens, literacy campagin, Home economics in puts, and the like. The elements of social democracy needs to be taken care of first. Resources are not equitable, trained people are not serving on the merits of their knowledge, policies are ethinic based( not that it is bad but it has its impact in good governace). Look, I want to see the "fit" theory work here. The whole componenets to impact each other to produce the desired out put. The role of government is one componenet- in our case it is a very influencial componenet. That is why, the policies and the freedom of establishing independent institutions that can be trusted by the people is quite important. this is how government is involved not in selling/ providing stove for free.

Please know that I appreciated your wonderful, intellectual thoughts.

Dear Teddy Chaka,

By they way you too have a lot of good idea... since you underline the important of
detail. That is how I try to add up on your
Your detail to make your and my case stronger.

As you said govt. can play a big roll.

For example: - they can say all car in Ethiopia should have LIFE insurance in order to be driven... this policy will create a car insurance company therefore govt. policy can impact market in positive way

As you said: -
"...To create standard for households- each household to use the "new technology"

Govt. can say each and every household that build from 2000 on should be fitted with this new technology... and also if any one want to sale his or her old house should be install this "new technology"

Just like here in America you can't insure you house without smoke alarm...we should create govt. standardization that improve our life.

Now back to my point even so the USA enforce you to buy smoke alarm but they will not force you to buy your smoke alarm from GE or other company... because it is where the market will tell us which is a winner or loser not the govt. on the same taken the govt. will tell you to force you to buy car insurance but they will not force you to buy it from A OR B CAMPANY that will be determined by the market.

The point is if we force every one to use ethanol where we going to get the ethanol? The price of ethanol could be much higher then burning wood...

Another point you make is allowing everyone to make this stove.... that is not a good idea to because we will make the stove-making ghetto...

For this let us look our farming every one is farming almost 60million us farming 85% of 80million people but we can't feed the rest of 20 million us why because even if we can afford to give or buy tractor for our 60million farmers where they going to get the farm land to farm since each of them own only one hector they can use a modern technology...

Now what is the answer?

I think the answer is simple we should limited to few modern big companies that will be manufacturing this product.

This big and modern big company should have share and open to public to buy the share… if Mr. A or Ms. X want to start one thousand birr stove making company they might started but they could have invested their one thousand birr in our big modern company and make much more profit then they would otherwise… this like saying investing one thousand birr in COKE COLA OR PEPSI COLA COMPANY…
HERE in USA we also doing it instead of opening one modern business we start Sole Proprietorship… the reason is we don’t trust other people and also we are very greedy we want to get all the profti to our self instead of sharing it with other.
You see sole proprietoship is good as long as thing goes our way but if we lose we lose everry thing our house every thing… the other disadvantage of sole proprietorship is the capital is very limited therefore we can not eplament big and new teconoogy to do our job…
Look our Addis Ababa Markto, they are full of sole proprietoship they are very poor and they are disoraginsed but if all oionion marchent united and open one shop and share the profit they would have be much better for all of us… one more example butter marchent and weat market they can’t afford firge because they don’t have capital indivalally the same theory here if they united and open few shop instead they could have afford cooler hence the customer could have servied better.
Why I am so hard on this topice because I feel we going to lose this chance to break out from poovertiy if we didn’t make our move very carefully.
One guy by the name of Master Mind:-
He think Ethanol fuel is not worthy beside contaminating a clean air. As if gasoline does not. As long as gasoline goes we pay dollars to contaminate our clean air in case of Ethanol we pay OUR BIRR to do the same job… therefore if every thing being equal I go for the BIRR
Dear Master mind if it make you brain happy we going to use electrify all our car and our stove but this ethanol stove will buy us a TIME…
I HOPE THIS discussion will not be short lived by nazret.com shutting down the forum early while the subject is RED HOT.
I ALSO thing the forum is working because we start answer each other input instead of shouting at each other without reading the input FIRST..

Even on other trade a guy by the name of habeshawu told me to change my nick name because he/she think I deserve better name than jank-mail... I say thank

About consultants our leaders have in Ethiopia in this senario

In old day our kings and queens used to have consultants but now aday what our leader want is YES-MAN not consultants... beside most the consultants in Ethiopia are busy trying to make their furtune they will not have time for our poor or our country... Me- first country Second is a norm.

Saying this we should not give-up I think nazret.com can paly a great roll by making a concation with out leader back in Ethiopia... for example invit our leader to take part in this forum....this way we will have a daract contact with them and help them to do more instead of insulting them we can help them hence help our county... most our leader doesn't come to this fourm because of insult to stop this insult nazret.com should select few good people from both side cud and meles supporter to make their point with our leader this way we can help our leader and our country with out going to Ethiopia..

One more thing this help should not be free wo ever take part in this fourm should be given land free of lease this way we can encourage the best of the best to come and to put their income

One last thing when the other see the positive side wining and making rich by doing so then all those negitive phd hold will come around..

Note:- do you note all the insult almost die down after our exchange? that is what our people want good stuff give them the good stuff they will behave

Dear Junk mail- one last note

Yes, in deed you deserve a different nick name unless you have a special reason for choosing "junk mail. I agree with Habses haw.

You said,"I am not an educated person." You must be humble to note that. If you mean by the degree that certifies your knowledg

e, perhaps, you need to look into that. You are certainly a promising gentleman.Your thinking system ( the way you process ideas) is quite promising for economics. Give it a serious thought!

The "yes Sir" consultation is a way of avoiding embarrassment and threat to save one's face; it is a way of consultation that rationalize the status quo. What expert calls " second loop learning should be established with productive reasoning to help leaders in our country to help them look at their assumptions. There are great leade r s in some areas despite the conflicts of interests they face between living out their talents and being faithful to their party line. We got the "yes sir" approach even here in States. No one is immuned.

I agree that insulting hardens the heart of leaders who possess power. What we need to focus on needs to be Productive reaso ning; it gives the benefit of the doubt; the second look, and a way of constructing on strength rather than unproductively criticize ( insult ) leaders who have to learn by doing. Here is where you once again showed me your wisdom, when you suggested the dialogue/ sharing views with respect and understanding inspite of difference in party affiliation, religion or demographics.

Thank you for the quality sharing of ideas. Let me know when you change your pen name.
