An Ethiopian court has convicted 27 people accused of conspiring to create public havoc in an attempt to bring down Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's government. Some of the defendants could face the death penalty.

A three-judge panel handed down guilty verdicts for 27 of the 46 defendants in the so-called Ginbot Seven case. Thirteen others who are not in custody had earlier been convicted in absentia. The remaining six were acquitted.

Those convicted include several current and retired army officers, including two generals, along with senior opposition political figures. They were charged with plotting to kill unnamed government ministers, destroy strategic facilities and incite rebellion within the army as part of a coup attempt.

Lawyers say some of the defendants could face the death penalty. In a telephone interview, Justice Ministry spokesman Mekonnen Bezadeih said it would be up to prosecutors to decide whether to seek the maximum sentence.

"I am not sure whether the prosecutors will ask for the death penalty or not," he said. "This will be presented by the prosecutors who followed the case."

Police opened the case in April, seizing weapons and documents they said were evidence of a coup plot masterminded by Berhanu Nega, founder of Ginbot Seven.

Berhanu was elected mayor of Addis Ababa in the disputed 2005 elections, but did not take office and was among opposition leaders jailed for life on charges of fomenting post-election violence.

After being pardoned, Berhanu went to the United States and founded the political organization Ginbot Seven, or May 15, the date of the 2005 election. The party has since been outlawed, and Berhanu was among those convicted in absentia.

Other opposition parties immediately questioned the verdict. A senior leader of the Forum for Democratic Dialogue, Bulcha Demeksa, said it seems impossible that such a complex trial could be completed quickly.

"I do not believe that such an involved case can be cleared up in a matter of four months, five months and sentence so many people," he said. "It is so complicated that it should take a long time for witnesses to [testify] and all kinds of evidence has to be collected and I do not believe a fair judgment can be made so quickly."

But Justice Ministry spokesman Mekonnen countered that the speedy trial was evidence of the judiciary's efficiency.

We are trying to facilitate the justice system to give fast decision, and the case already started before they convicted, the police was followed them before the case was brought to court, and I think it is not fast," he said.

The trial was marked by complaints from defendants that they had been tortured in custody.

A highly-decorated former army general and hero of Ethiopia's war with Eritrea, Asamenew Tsige, caused a stir last week when he told the court he had lost the sight in one eye during a prison beating. The defendants were reported to have stood up in unison and shouted, "Let us be heard'.
But the judges refused to hear the charges, saying they were a matter for police to investigate.

When the trial resumed Thursday, scores of federal police officers lined the walls of the courtroom to keep order. Judge Adam Ibrahim warned defendants and observers against emotional outbursts.

Defense attorneys say they will appeal the verdict.

Yes, Strugling is loosing life or being arrested .. so is not doing anything many are being arrested and killed and abused. Money is being printed for one ethnic where teh other suffer, many are pulled out of job when the other is taking it with out experience nor qualification, so is some are being allowed to do business with out paying tax or bringing things from abroad with out paying tax while others pay tax and loose out. Some bid for contracts and pushed out when others get the contract from in the back room. All this is happening and the only way to stop is to continue to strugle some peacefuly others with real consiquence.

If you kill 46 people it is fair to say you hve 5000 enemys and the more Meles abuses the more the people will rise to engage for strugle.
Like the old days we do not have to go to bushes to attac this govenment everyone coudl do thier strugle from thier own home starting today!

We either have democratic government or dectator govenment.
If Govenment is:
- Closing midai
- Arresting peacefule demonstrator "kill"
- Arresting leader type people for getting
involved in politics
- Millitary is being rulled by one Ethnic
- Govenment is in bussiness looting
- Govenment is in court dectating

Then we have dectator in the office it does not matter how he dresses it to show off!

It is upto all off us to write to speak upi to join meetings, to show up in Toronto for the G20 meeting from all over North America to say to Meles you are Dectator.

It is time for professors and good writers to get thier story in the papers of western country to let people and leaders know about the dectator!

Strugle is not only to go to bushes and fight that was in the old days!

If all join a party other than EPDRF instead of just sitting with out any involvment it helps for Meles to realize he can't go on like he did. Stop taking brib from him so that he will kill your brother. Stop sitting in parlament quit and claping so that you could earn some change while 6.2M are starving to death under your not getting involved to hold a leader accountable.

Not only judges, but many other possitions were taken by Woyane Cadre with out qualification! My own Mother was pushed away to be replaced by three level lower person and the same person who happen to be Tigray.

The irony was this man was a good person in Mengistu time he was arrested and since he did not have a family with in come.. Our family fead his sisters and mother and alsow took food to prison two to three times a week while in prison.
When he was given the position he was ashamed of it and let my mother know about it as well. He was kind to her with being honest and not ordering her around and even comming for help when needed. After two years of such kind of game she has asked for retiremnt and was granted. She was questioned why she is leaving her post and interigated and threatened not to talk about it. I am sure if it was not the "Tigray man who was fair to her" and explain that she just want to leave and join her kids abraod she would have been arrested. So tell me how would I feel re this govenment?
You see, When some alligation comes forth some write becuase they or thier family experinced it!

Personaly the Position was key place and may be Woyane did not trust her to be there and I am only thankful the the man who is honest and fair to talk in behalf of her to get her appoved for retirment and that is end of story for me. I do not hate a government just for making one or two mistakes specialy up on taking over government with strugle.

But, after 18 years I have to hold them repsonsible for not being fair and allowing others to feel they are part of thier success and no one should have special class status. It is one thing to monitor or take away positions when you are under threat when taking over government than when you are 18 years in power you still titening screws just for you and you alone to be in power for ever!

Time to mean Democracy not play Democracy!

Like a pyromaniac, the United States threatens to ignite the entire East African region in its campaign to suppress Islamist forces in Somalia. Unable to marshal support for the pitiful puppet regime in Mogadishu, the Americans try to buy ethnic Somali recruits in surrounding countries. A new military offensive is set for late December.

Somali refugees and ethnic Somali citizens of Kenya are being recruited and trained by the thousands for a U.S.-backed offensive in Somalia, to begin next month. The Associated Press, citing numerous sources among refugees, young men who have deserted from the new militia and their families, local Kenyan officials and foreign diplomats, reports that the offensive against Islamist forces in Somalia is planned for late December, the end of the Somali rainy season. That’s the same seasonal window the Americans took advantage of three years ago, when the U.S. instigated an Ethiopian invasion of Somalia that plunged the country into what the United Nations described as the “worst humanitarian crisis in Africa.” That crisis continues, complicated by a severe drought and a U.S. blockade of food aid.
Washington supports a puppet government that controls little more than a small corner of Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, and would immediately collapse where it not for the protection of Rwandan and Burundian troops that guard the airport. Most of central and southern Somalia is controlled by Islamist Shabab fighters. The U.S. is attempting to starve the region into submission by withholding 40 million pounds of food warehoused in Mombasa, Kenya.
With little support inside Somalia, the Americans have organized mass recruitment among the hundreds of thousands of Somalis who have fled the fighting to refugee camps in Kenya – a practice that violates international law. Recruits are also being drawn from ethnic Somalis who are Kenyan citizens, in the northeastern part of the country. The Associated Press has learned of similar recruitment and training in the Somali regions of Ethiopia and Djibouti, where the United States maintains a huge military base.
The recruits are lured into service with promises of $600 a month, but deserters say they are often beaten, ill-fed and unpaid.

The Americans are playing a very dangerous game. In addition to breaking international law and discrediting aid agencies by recruiting among refugees, the U.S. is encouraging a wider conflict in East Africa. Ethnic Somalis dominate in northeastern Kenya, in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia, and in Djibouti. Ethnic Somalis waged a secessionist war in Kenya in the mid-1960s and continue to resist Ethiopian rule in the Ogaden. According to the Associated Press, recruits in Kenya are deprived of their identification cards and told, “You are not a Kenyan. From this moment, tell yourselves and other people you are a Somali.” Recruiters are apparently doing the same thing among ethnic Somalis in Ethiopia and Djibouti.
The Americans, in their zeal to defeat the Islamist Shabab in Somalia, are encouraging Somali nationalism in neighboring countries, and thus planting the seeds of future wars of secession. Although the U.S. may think that it is turning brother Somalis against one another for U.S. foreign policy purposes, in reality the Americans are fanning the flames of war among Somalia's neighbors – including Kenya. These are the fruits of AFRICOM, the U.S. military's African Command. Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama is destabilizing his father's own homeland, and the whole of East Africa.
