Ethiopia discovers gold deposits worth US$1.7 billion

APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)

Ethiopia announced on Friday that it discovered two gold deposits in the country, estimated to be worth US$ 1.7 billion.

According to reports of the national Ethiopia Radio, the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines and Energy disclosed that over 40 tons of gold were found in two places in the western parts of the country.

The reports said the studies conducted by British and Saudi Arabian companies indicate that there is gold deposit in two areas of the Western region of Ethiopia.

“A study conducted by a British gold development company over the past five years shows that there is over 22 tons of gold deposit in western Ethiopia. Some US$ 200 million is required to develop the deposit in a period of 5-10 years,” the report said.

The Saudi Arabian company also reported to have discovered 18 tons gold deposit in Legendenbi area.

“Geological survey indicates that there is 30 tons gold deposit in Tulukapi area, (south). The country has an estimated 500 tons gold deposit,” added the report.

Currently, some 44 companies are exploring gold in the country which gets about US$ 105 million from gold export per annum.

It is the first time Ethiopia announces the discovery of such natural resources in the country.

A little distraction from Woyanne looking for money in Washington this days. 1.7 billion in 10 years and probably at best 50% of the stake for Ethiopia is not that significant money (remind you in Alamhodi mines he has 98% and Ethiopia 2% only). It is not significant money when you compare that to what Ethiopia receives yearly in aid (1.5 billion) and from remittances of Woyyane's archenemy namely Ethiopians in diaspora (2.5 billion). I have always wondered if the exported gold quantities and the money obtained by Woyyane is not slightly higher than the numbers they declare. We know they love gold.

Midroc Gold Mining, A private company owning Ethiopia's only operating gold mine said on Thursday it found 70,000 kg of potential gold reserves in the south. The company, which owns the Legedembi Gold Mine, plans to realise the extraction of 70,288 kg of gold within the coming 13 years from three major areas identified with potential reserves," Arega Yirdaw, general manager of the company, told local media. “The company is now engaged in exploration activities in three areas with identified gold potentials," he said.

The company acquired Legedembi Gold Mine - located in Ethiopia's gold belt 500 km south of Addis Ababa - from the government in 1997 with an acquisition price of $172 million.
