Ethiopia earmarks almost $1 billion for roads

By Barry Malone

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters)
- Ethiopia has set aside $987 million to build new roads and upgrade dilapidated ones during the 2009/10 (July-June) financial year, the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) said.

The landlocked country has spent $3.6 billion over the past 10 years on building 101,359 km (62,940 miles) of asphalt and gravel roads, the ERA said, with just over a third of this provided by the International Development Agency, the European Union and Japan. The Ethiopian government paid the rest.

Tigray People Looting Front=TPLF,
a week individual like you dog never satisified what a good news coming out of Ethiopia. Your kind people wanna hear news like so much people in Addis dies.So many people suffered for shortage of food etc. If your kind of people heard this type of news they are so much happier because they know how to cry for nothing. So what is wrong with this news? does it mentions about Tigray being built or it said everything is building in Tigray. This type of hate won't take you now where but it may help you util you finished chewing your chewing gum.

I got a question for you? do you know Tigray? have you been there? if you are you never put this kind of shameful statment at all. Please think before you spread your stinky sputum.

You should have thanked what is actually the government doing to enhance our old and past due roads.Mengistu never done it and Haileselassie never touch it but EPRDF, building it with massive of budget. You got problem with it?you got a problme yourself. Yeha

The Country needs roads indeed,if the project is legitimate and very important for the country's economic infrastructure. The other important issue is money and management. If this project is for embezzlement money, that is boloney. It is better to use the budget for something which is important, such as feed the hungry people. Do no beg every other three years.

I do not think that now is the right time to do investment on infrustructure. People are dying. It is shameful to beg on one hand and tell propoganda that they are investing on road. Shame on you Meles Zenawi's regime..donate the money to people/children who are starving. Learn how to do investment, prioritizing. Life comes before road. who would use the road if people are dying of hunger, or you start to exercise the 'let the poor die' policy.

Can't you guys imagine that a good portion of the problem connected to food scarsity is also due to remotness of many parts of our country? Developement of road infrastructure is therefore also very important to solve the recurring problem of food shortage. So, I find it is only a good news that ERA has the budget. Ethiopia needs roads as well.

We all agree that building infrastructure is the # 1 weapon to fight pevorty for poor countries like Ethiopia. There fore the goverment is fighting poverty with the proper weapon. The ather thing is that over third of the money comes from foreighn countries that means over half of the money is generated by the country.I think this is a sign of moving in the right direction.

you are wrong. if i have to choose between spending money on buying food or building a road believe me i will spend it on the latter because developing the infrastracture is how you get out of poverty for good. after all the americans rather give the country food aid than helping her invest in the infrastracture. so it is a smart choice to spend what ever little you have on a road so the childrens of these poor people will not suffer like their parents did.
but yes its time for the government to equaly invest on irrigation.

Good news, but it is not bullet proof for Dectator to stay in power! For an accountable govenment to stay on for ever holding power!
Yes, some do good things in order to scam a lot so please do not preach Mr. Yeha to make it a reason for Meles and EPDRF stay in power with out fair election.

The world is changing and all this buildings are a must and it is great if it is to build free socity so that there will be unity and democracy. If the intention is to shut people not to question accountabiltiy then it is garbage!

Ehtiopia needs working hands not
talking lips. We have talked for
thousands of years. It is time for work.
And I thnak God, for the current government
despite some of its weaknesses, is the best
ever. I wonder how many of you who are busy talking ever did one single thing for your country. I didn't say, talk, write, I mean did
anything. I believe in discussions and freedom of opinions and speech. But it alwasys amazes me ahen people who couldn't even manage their own life and family effectively are quick in have so many opinions and analysis about many of the
works that are being done back home. I would like to thank people who have balanced views on issues. Quite a few in our generation, particularly some who live abroad are hopelessly backward beyond my imagination, in their thinking about what balanced view is
is.It seems a new generation is the only solution. Till then we may have to put up wih our brothers that we thought we know but we actually don't.

haaa..
over the third means 75%+. If I am mistaken correct me? less than 25% is what the gov. spent… that in mind there was no fair biding system and it all goes to one of list of woyane construction companies.

Ethiopia has enjoyed a great deal of stablity since this govt took power.since then Ethiopia has been building and rebuilding herself in every front.one of the most important front being the road construction, which is a vital part of the infrastructure.we can not ignore nor take it for granted what the govt has done for us to go through all the obstacles we faced, including the invasion of shabia to distablize the styablity we are enjoying now.
Some times we might forget how far we come to be where we are now.or we fail to recognize the perspectives.what could have been?look the neighborlng countries, sudan they discoverd oil,but still backward.kenya they seemed they were better than us but now they are behind us.somalia &eritrea failed states.zimbabwe such a prosper land now in ruins.we are even in the verge of selling electric power to neighborhood countries, which make them dependant on us.the achievments of the govt goes on and on.

I am for infrastructure improvement and believe it is key to the economic development of a country. However, given the serious food crises that Ethiopians face year after year and the millions lives lost thru the years, wouldn’t it be wise for the Ethiopian government to first investments in the country’s food security?
