Derartu Tulu, of Ethiopia, who became the first Ethiopian woman to win at the New York City Marathon on Sunday, poses with the Men's marathon winner Meb Keflezighi of the United States who was born in Eritrea, on the 86th floor observatory of the Empire State Building.

To Some, an American Winner Is Not American Enough

As soon as Mebrahtom Keflezighi, better known as Meb, won the New York City Marathon on Sunday, an uncommon sports dispute erupted online, fraught with racial and nationalistic components: Should Keflezighi’s triumph count as an American victory?

Yo the eritreans Buchulas can you tell us why this man of eritrea descent opted to run for his adoptive country instead of his birth country??? Z amiche your opinion is needed in this posting -maybe as a US citizen - lucrative endorsements are coming his way whereas running for his birth country would have been only the gold medal and few thousand bucks- We are wondeering so in your tiny miserable country money is more valued than national identity???

Politics aside both share the same heritage. Good to see them together. No amount of propoganda from both sides would change the fact that the people of Ethiopia and Eritrea share the same values, culture and language. It is a matter of time things would normalize and we would be the same again.

Banda like his fathers. like father like son. see the difference between this two?

she is Ethiopian representing Ethiopia because she was born in Ethiopia and loves her country while at the same time the guy is American when he was born Eritrean and he changes his alligence to US because either he is after money which is a temptation to bandas to betray their homeland or he simply doesn't love his country. i can go on and on...

vote EPRDF 2010

well, even Obama is not American enough for lots of people. Meb (Mebrahtom Keflezighi) I like to call him the ethiopian-Eritrean-American has chosen to represent his adopted country the US, where he spent most of his adult life. so I say f*** those, who have problem with that.
Go Meb Go!!! we ethiopians-your cousins wish you well and all the success. You are one decent man..
Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia...love you a lot. my oromia sister solider.. god bless. I have 2/3 oromo even though i don't speak it. we, ethiopias are proud of you

Derartu and Meb congratulations! you make all the african race proud. Meb is smart enough to run as an American. He signed agreement with Nike in 2004 when he won silver in the Olympics in Athens. I don't think that Nike would have given hims endorsement deal if he was non-American. I, myself run half marathon every 2 years. I followed Meb and all African distance runners. I saw Meb in Chicago and he is a soft spoken gentleman.

“There is this notion about innate physiological gifts that certain races presumably possess. Quite frankly, I think it feeds into deep-seated stereotypes. The more blatant forms of racial discrimination and illegal forms have been eliminated, but more subtle forms of discrimination still exist.”

David Wiggins, a professor at George Mason University who studies African-Americans and sports.

Well said!

To some MEB is not american enough?

"Say what?"
"Who are u people?"

Oh!! the GERMENS who come here to escape SWATSKA? The italians who come here with AL-PACINO and GIAMBI family to expand mafisto business,or the scotissh jiglo with cherry red leprechaun who took a raft to 'RED INDIANS LAND" to escape the potato famine and the snow blizzard?

Please! All u GRINGOS shut the FAK-UP and respect other humans. Any time something good performed by immigrant black africans, it becomes the major issue of race and the GRINGOS seems like to forget that, themselves were immigrants 20-years ago.

Unless u are listed in one of the indigenous, native americans, first nations, amerigines of the first to inhabit the north america please shut up and respect the 'TRUE OWNER OF AMERICA"

I don't think Americans should deceive themselves this so called 'American Victory in Marathon'. Both Derartu and and Kiflezighi are proud Ethiopians and nobody should say anything about that. Mebrahtom was born when Eritrea existed only as a province in Ethiopia and carried Ethiopian passport before he got a fake American passport in 1998. He has never been an Eritrean. So, this makes him an undisputed Ethiopian...let's celebrate the double marathon victory for Ethiopia...period!

Congradulation to both.

What do you see though on their face or their physical condition?

and the root cause?

It's sad to see my people like that!

Deprived of lots of basic needs and demoralized.

Living under two cruel dictators is the result of what our people look like these days.

I know some paid cadres will not like this and this media is filled with them unfortunately.

Happy for Meb too. It is his choice to run as an American, and as an Ethiopian-American myself, I feel like my guys won both races ;-)

I'M BACK.

VIVA to the great Dereta Tulu.

The real reason why Mebratu changed his name and runs for America is because he is Eritrean Tigre and Ethiopian Tigre mixed. It was either Meles or Isayas.
I predict that the Red Sea will swallow Eritrea soon and Ethiopia will have a sea port in Badme (2012). NAZRET.com will repost this when it happens.

GOD BLESS ETHIOPIA

Congratulations to both winners , im sure it took alot of dedication & training. for most of the world all they see is two black faces - only people from east africa entertain the idea ones from eritrea & the other from ethiopia. Point is people always going to represent their hood-. Remember America is a young country so its still rebelious & ungratefull to its people.
