Ethiopian protest leaders guilty

BBC News

A court in Ethiopia has found 38 senior opposition figures guilty of charges connected to mass protests after disputed elections two years ago.

The charges ranged from armed rebellion to "outrage against the constitution".

Sentencing is next month and they could face the death penalty, says the BBC's Elizabeth Blunt in Ethiopia.

Hundreds of thousands took part in demonstrations complaining of fraud and vote-rigging by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's government in the 2005 polls.

Almost 200 people died in two waves of protests.

The opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy blamed the deaths on the security forces but Mr Meles accused the opposition of starting the violent protests.

His government also points out that it introduced multi-party elections to Ethiopia after years of military rule.

In the elections, the opposition made huge gains but says it was cheated out of victory.

Two months ago a judge threw out controversial charges of attempted genocide and treason against 111 people arrested after the election protests.

The violence and the charges of election fraud have tarnished Mr Meles' image as a favourite of Western donors and one of a new wave of reforming African leaders.

Ethiopia convicts 38 over post-election unrest

KALITI, Ethiopia (AFP) - Thirty-eight opposition activists were convicted by an Ethiopian court Monday in a trial stemming from violent unrest that followed disputed elections in 2005.

The 38 members of the Coalition for Union and Democracy (CUD) were all convicted of breaching Ethiopia's constitution, after a trial which they refused to recognise and where they opted not to defend themselves.

Twenty-two were also found guilty of obstructing the exercise of the constitution; five were convicted of coordinating, leading and encouraging armed violence against the government; and 10 were found guilty of endangering the country's defence.

"The court obliged the defendants to defend themselves, but they have failed to do so," said judge Adil Ahmed, adding that sentencing would be carried out on July 8.

Verdicts were scheduled for June 18 in the cases of an additional 12 accused who were represented in court by defense lawyers.

The Ethiopian government has regularly accused the CUD of fomenting violence and plotting its overthrow since elections in May 2005, which the opposition alleges were riddled with fraud.

At least 193 civilians and six police officers died in the capital Addis Ababa during post-election violence in June and November 2005.

This is a decision by a judge by the law of the land. Wait for the sentence to be read out and then see what the government will do then. Then and only then can the government pardon or go ahead with the sentence. Before that, Meles is unable to do anything. I blame the Vocal diaspora group like Kokeb et al, propagating this kind of most upsetting Kebele politics that was seized by the CDU hard cores. That was the greatest fault they have made. It is unrealistic and selfish to compare Ethiopian reality with ex_soviet republics.

You can't model one type of reality with another one. You can't partition Ethiopia, into this and that tribe to set your own plans. And then you can't send a pitiful message about one side of Ethiopia.

When the educated people think like this what about the masses,who would receive this information. This should not be a problem if Southerners and Northerners administer this country. Others should wait what a riper time - Incase If Ethiopia follows this "federal" politics. Why does one want to explode Ethiopia instead of exploring it; because of a "harari or a tigre" is on top, assigned to the highest jobs of the country?
Although, a huge mistake is done by the opposition parties - they were victims of the extremist hard score Diaspora politics - I have always stressed they have to be freed. Simply, because they were elected by the people and they represent large constituencies. The kind of grave mistake that the opposition in haste took reminds me that of Kokeb and the likes who reiterate with the same feverishness:

Absent from annual soccer tournament
Avoid TPLF supporters TEGRE restaurants
Document and varify all WEYANES in ur area

Don't use/buy any product of ALAMUDIN owned WEYANE'S company
notify immigration offices when TPLF members live the country and seeking asylum

The original judges and prosecutors left the country because their ethic and moral can't allow them to prosecute these guys from the start. Let us forget CUD and go back and see a few cases and examine what had happened to one of the founder of TPLF; Saye and his group. The court let them go free however by the PM protest and all went back to prison. Let us take Dr Aserate, Dr Taye and so many others; none of them were a criminal… There are so many causes like that. From the beginning this is not a court issue, it is purely political and I don't think there will be any solution through court process… I have great respect to them because they stand for what they believe… I don't think there will be any justice in the court of Melese and Sebhato's.. especially after I heard the Sebhato Nega's interview my little hope dead for good…
