Ethiopia finalizes construction of electricity transmission lines to its neighbors

APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)
Ethiopia announced on Tuesday the finalization of the construction of electricity transmission lines that will help the country to supply electricity to its neighbors.

The Ethiopian Electricity Power Corporation (EEPCo) said that the interconnection line joining Ethiopia and Djibouti is nearing completion while the lines to Kenya and Sudan are being carried out as scheduled.

Ethiopia is expected to begin supplying power to Kenya, Sudan and Djibouti as from next year.

The electricity transmission lines are being set up with a multi-million US dollars support, obtained from the World Bank.

The neighbouring countries have already signed agreements to import electricity from Ethiopia.

Currently, Ethiopia is undertaking billions of dollars worth of investment on hydro-electric projects, which will help the country to become the leader in power generation in the sub-region.

According to the corporation, there is a plan to increase the country’s power capacity to 10,000 megawatt in the next five to ten years.

Currently, Ethiopia is generating 2,000 megawatt of power for its local consumption.

Does the transmission line go through Eritrea territory? I am just curious because if it does then something is wrong with Ethiopian leaders. poor Eritrea is not to make peace yet. Alots of Eritreans are taking an Ethiopian identity card to live and reject being Eritrean these days. Just curious to know what is going on with our neghbores including Djbouti. This small country is costing Ethiopia lots of money for using the port, it is Ethiopia's turn to bring the money back by selling exccess electric power. Sudan is uncertain country, it might be the most fragmented state sooner or later after the next year South Sudan election. Uganda and Kenya are Ethiopia's good ally and should be special discount for them. Good job EPRDF on the economic development side.

Didn't they tell us they are already to start exporting to Sudan by September? and now "Ethiopia is expected to begin supplying power to Kenya, Sudan and Djibouti as from next year." ... when does the export realy starting? how many times do we have to hear the news before the actual starting date? I miss that date.

This decission is simply political and earning hard currency than business decission. This is Meles and his wife idea to ship the hard currency directly from Sudan and djibouti to their personal accounts, otherwise, Ethiopian needs so badly electric power to its citizens and industries yet they are shipping to neighbor countries for pennies.

Imagine! 80% of Ethiopians do not have the most rudimentary electric connection just to have light. Here, irresponsible government is talking about exporting electric city for a country (Sudan) awash with petroleum. This is equivalent to selling your dinner just to get money to watch movie. Ethiopia should rather satisfy its need in the first place and reduce deforestation caused by acute need for energy and supply domestic investors with reasonable price to be creative and productive. EPRDF is just having silly calculation of fending dissent from neighbouring countries by using electricity as a bargaining chip.
In practice, you can't manipulate Djibouti via electricity, since it holds more powerful bargaining chip - port. Like wise Sudan is too rich to be influenced by cutting off electricity - since it can pump oil as much as it needs.
The shortest way for EPRDF to be respected is to work for Ethiopia and to be accountable to the people. Time will tell if a project sidelining its own people is sustainable. They have to put 24/7 security at each grid posts. Perhaps Ethiopia will loose more paying compensation for damages to foreign users.
I am so much worried by the pattern that our land, our sisters, brothers, etc, sold to foreigners, our age old faith is rooted out by foreign religion (Orthodox and Islam) then what is the meaning of being an Ethiopian citizen? It is not so different as they are denying our nationality. What are we waiting for? I am truly angry and won't hesitate volunteering to redem my country as of now like my forefathers do. Do you join to liberate our country?

Nice to hear this but the export will only start paying the loan until the return is completed. Attention has to be given to fulfill the local demand and above all,the development of such infrastructures has to improve the standard of living of the people.
Presently, 90% of our population is poor and this figure will change only if we have good governance in the country.

I am happy that the country is doing well and I could give little credit for having the courage of going forward with building and hydro and road. But it is better if we have democracy , accountability, fairness along he way so that we will know where the money goies and have equal opportunity to all.

I love my country and I love her from south to north east to west right to the boarder, but the way we are lead we may have issue not too long from now then all these progress will go on hold or destroyed which is sad!

History will repeat when leaders ignor signe of frustration. When you develope only the capital city it is not good eihter and I see l lot of frustration from the rural.

There is no cure for this kind of people, except burn them and bury their ashes deep down thousands of miles beneath earth.

You had better refer to world/African map again. I don't see the wisdom in exporting soemthing before satisfying domestic consumption. So much for scolding farmers for selling butter and buying cooking oil. With the money they earn from exporting electricity to neighbors, TPLF will buy kerosene/nech gas/ and distribute it among farmers so that they burn KURAZ ....See how ridiculous it sounds?

Abdullah,

You must be one of the looter cadres Ye Meles CHIN GERED who says and do anything to feed his stomach. Exporting power is an ideal for Ethiopia to earn hard currency in order to expand its Dam construction with out any string by foreign banks and Egypt Lobbyists but the equation is should we give priorities to our citizens in need of electric power to their house and for cooking their foods in order to relief the cutting of trees for charcoal and let our landscapes cover green and limit the rapidly expansion of dissertation in Ethiopia specially Tigray, Wollo and Gonder regions. Prioritize the power to demotic at the present time has a lot of advantage for the country developments in short and long term effects. Every decision Meles makes is how he can exploit the situation to his advantage for his survival in power not what is the best solution for the country.

One thing everyone should remember is there is no independent AUDITORS who can monitor the hard currency revenue Ethiopia will generate from Sudan, Djibouti and Kenya and whether the money is coming back to Ethiopia and invested in other projects or used for the public good at large. Meles and his wife Azeb are known to all Ethiopians that they are professional looters and heartless people who have strong tie with the Sudan corrupt and criminal Government and Meles has the absolute power to order all the money Ethiopia is generating from the power to his bank accounts as he is doing all the mineral resources indirectly by contracting out to Al Moudi the Saudi billionaire

If Meles can steal money from the dying of Tigrayans in 1984 the great starvation, definitely Meles will loot most of the money Ethiopia exports power today and in the future.

The 11 to 15% growth year after year is for the cadres who are protecting Meles and Azeb. The standard of living for the ordinary people of Ethiopia through out Woredas are the same as 20 years ago when Meles arrived at Bole Airport from London after he sold the country he was ready to lead. The Villas in Addis Ababa, Bahridar, Mekele and other places belongs to the looters cadres and Generals, security communities and high position office holders in the country. You need to drink HABI (KOSO) if it wakes you up to see what is going on in the country today.

Chala,

"Samsom,dedeb atihun...
September is next year in ethiopia. so export to sudan on september means next year in eth ... gebicho"

I believe you are mistaken. I don't think Ferengie is writing his article using the Ethiopian calander. Ferengie always writes with the Anglo-Saxen calander. There is also more mistake than the export date for Sudan too in this article. This Ferengie says also Ethiopia will export to Kenya next year. No one from the Ethiopian side said that. Tramsmission line to Kenya won't even be completed, at least, until 2013.

So ironic, Ethiopia importing power, yet the citizens are suffering due to rationing of electric power not to mention the millions more that have NEVER had power in their lives, although I am happy about the news and excited that Ethiopia is capable to do this I can't help but wonder who is caring about the citizens of the country.
I guess it's true what they say

Mr.lion, It is good news that Ethiopia will be exporting electricity soon to its neighboring countries. I don't see any problem if the electric transmission system is constructed along the delineated border, so that the people of Eritrea can benefit from the blessings Ethiopia has. Hey love overcomes hatred and the people of Eritrea will remain our cousins and neighbors for good. There is always hope, this year is much better than last year and Peace and good neighborliness will flourish.

I will not respond to die-hard Woyane loyalists but to Tefera.
Electricity is the backbone of any economic progress in this competitive world. Electricity serves as the lifeline of the provision of home electricity, manufacturing industries, agricultural mechanization, science and technology. You can't cope with the rest of the world unless you teach your children with modern equipments, laboratories, computers and so on which ultimately run by electricity. You can't have hospitals without electricity to nurture healthy citizens that builds the nation. You can't imagine an industry that produces competitive goods without electricity. You can't have clean water to grow your children safe and sound without electricity. You can't have doctors, engineers, scientists, lawyers, economists, entrepreneurs, etc, without the provision of electricity to schools and colleges. You can't have creative craftsman, artists, without electricity. You can't construct the buildings, infrastructures, without electricity.
In this volatile world domestic consumer is indispensable to have stable economic growth. Ethiopia is one of the poorest country having the weakest domestic consumer. Therefore, empowering domestic consumer makes sense in economics. Therefore, how do you improve the purchasing capacity of citizens is the question at heart.
When citizens have access to electricity, they will buy electric appliances such as TV, computer, refrigerator, air-conditioner, washing machines, CD players, DVD players, electric shavers, heater, microwave ovens, toaster, coffee makers, etc. This demand encourage Enterprises to invest and upgrading manufacturing plants, open employment opportunities, generate more tax revenues, improve domestic technologies and even supply competitive gods on world markets.
When Ethiopians having unfettered access to electricity, it creates a chain effect that energize consumption, creativity and mass production power of the nation.
We never heard of a country selling electricity before satisfying its own need. This is ridiculous and ignorance at best. For your information, one automobile manufacturer, Peugeot uses more than the entire Ethiopian consumption of electricity. Imagine where we are.
In the name of development you can't simply waste the nations resources. I am not against developing electricity but who are entitled to use? What is the impact of such investment in the life of ordinary Ethiopians? Who are the beneficiaries? Corrupt politicians or Ethiopia!?
It is no secret that we have no the slightest confidence in the regime in power that betrayed the nation since its inception. Our patience is running out to sit idle and watch the resource of the country plundered by few aristocrats in the name of development.
In the first place no person with a right mind went to clean his neighbor's house while his own is filthy. There are over 7o million Ethiopians in the dark waiting to have their own light. Ignoring this fact will ignite frustration and revolt.
On top of the heinous case of land sell to foreigners if EPRDF is continue to sell the country's resource, mark my words, the country is smoldering on fire beneath the surface of so called development. EPRDF is crossing the red line and a time bomb is ticking. Divided Ethiopians will join hands to reclaim their nation.

I dont see why Ethiopians should celebrate to fake news. We all know the truth. for a starter, Ethiopia has more black outs than Kenya, Sudan, Djibouti and even war torn Somalia.

98% of Ethiopians do not have access to electricity.

So exporting the little they produced in the latest dam shows Dictator Meles is only doing projects to profit his camp and not for the Ethiopians.

He tells his farmers grow khat not food because Somalis have money.

Export electricity because Ethiopians have no electronic items.

The result is food aid that never ends, infact Ethiopia gets more food aid than war torn Somalia who was at war for 20 years. It just shows Ethiopians are far behind in every field and whatever progress it makes its meaningless.

Go to Ethiopia then Hargeisa which has faster internet than most African states yet nor recognized and see how many times you get blackouts.

Peace

sulleiman well, obviously you have thought about this way more than i did, but the bottom line is you borrow dollars to build a power project, you have to pay it back in dollar. so what you do is use some of it for dometic consumtion and if you have the market sell some of it to get hard currency and pay the loan. by doing that you move into more projects each project adding to the domestic grid as well as generating foreign currency for more power projects. it sounds like smart idea to me provided the market is there and considering the fact ethiopias industries are at their infant age to bring in the required hard currency. remember according to the study the country has tens of thousands mw potential and at the present provided all the projects are complete it should have extra power. so whats the problem if even it means that not every ethiopian gets electricity, for now.

Utopian wanna-be "LION" comments:

"Does the transmission line go through Eritrea territory? I am just curious because if it does then something is wrong with Ethiopian leaders. poor Eritrea is not to make peace yet. Alots of Eritreans are taking an Ethiopian identity card to live and reject being Eritrean these days."

Retarded utopian. Eritrea has its own capacity to deliver its own electrical power needs, whether from HIrgigo, the area of Massawa where or tiny and primitive naval rebels destroyed your "lion" navy mercinary dream, or wind or solar power. And eritrea doesn't live in a pipe dream of exporting power lines where its infantile leaders rushed to set up without even feasible studies, and where it doesn't even cover the capital city's needs, let alone to deliver electrical service to the rular area, that of Eritrea.

And no decent Eritrean would like to be a new poster child of Ethiopia. You, along with the UN Corporation, might have set up refugee camps, here and there, to sabotage our Warsai-Yikealo Marshal Plan, but you forgot that an Eritrean is an Eritrean, wherever he/she goes. And it shows! Eritrean simply means defiance, a built in nationalism to be who you are, an identity based on Martyrdom and just cause. Anything you and your sponsors devised, it turned out against your predictions and wishes.

Idiotic utopian, stop your Woyane Daydreaming. The next time you have an issue of Ethiopia, stick with the topic. Eritrea is Eritrea, no matter how you attempted and hired to slice it.

Dear Tefera,
I understand what you mean. If we borrow we have to pay. No question about it. But, remember we shouldn't borrow for the sake of paying or collecting dollars. In any economic abc hard currency is not basic requirement for development.
If so the oil rich countries would have been the leaders of world economy. Japan, dominate the world market because it develops indigenous technology than exporting fish (which is abundant).
Taiwan, Korea and Singapore never exported natural resource, but developing technology with local knowhow by focusing on education.
The industrial revolution that changed Europe is by developing domestic industry. Look, Uganda is selling electric power to Tanzania and Kenya for so many decades, but you know where it is now.
You should not bypass the moral dimension that poor Ethiopians desperately need to light their houses, to drink clean water, to have sanitation and to send their children to school.
It is immoral to trade Ethiopians for dollar. No country have ever developed by outsiders. The people are the the one who build the nation. Japan and Korea are good examples. 99.9% of the business are controlled by their own people. They plunder the fools resource in third world country but never let their own taken even under the rhetoric of globalization.
I remember a Geologist friend of mine a few decades ago that I proposed to him why not Ethiopia send its students to learn mining so that we extract it by ourselves. To my surprise he told me its cheaper to buy fuel than to extract. Look he is geologist, I mean professional about minerals. I understand his problems are - since he is a generation growing in AYER BAYER NIGID. The problem of EPRDF is not far from this sickness. My friend we may have difference in political views, but when the interest of our nation comes we should come to a constructive consensus. Why developed countries are different from us is because they safeguard their resources and plunder others. Why the US has to keep its oil and buy in billions dollars in middle East?
As I have explained in the previous piece, development is not all about paying credit or sustaining by selling resources. It is all about creating condition to encourage vibrant domestic entrepreneurship middle class society that will no longer be influenced by external pressures. Therefore, Ethiopia should not focus on tonight dinner but for the fate of its grand grand children. It is true that the guys on the helm of power are devoid of that vision. They have no caliber to see beyond their stomach. At any cost the nation needs a visionary who thinks for the next 500 years. No question about it, a brain from DEDEBIT is too little to handle 80 million strong people destiny.
Good day.
