Ethiopia hit by diesel shortage

By Tedla Yeneakal

Source: Capital

Major towns throughout Ethiopia have been hit by a major shortage of diesel fuel, starting Thursday, July 10, 2008 this week, gas stations were congested with vehicles queuing to fill up their tanks.

Damenu Kibret, Public Relations head of the Ethiopian Petroleum Enterprise (EPE), told Capital that the shortage occurred from reduced supply at retail companies.
Relevant government officials are discussing with oil retail firms to particularly identify the main factor behind the shortage.

However, an official of one of the oil companies blamed EPE for the shortage saying that the enterprise has restricted supply of diesel by setting quotas to limit the amount that enters the country.

“The amount was not restricted before, now there is a limit on imports that has been put in place,” said an official from one of the retailing companies.
During the first nine months of the current Ethiopian year, the country spent slightly over 10 billion birr on fuel imports of 1.37 million tons, an increase in the volume of fuel imports during the same period by 10 percent.
The cost of fuel import has been a major element offsetting gains in the export sector, where it has been consuming up to 80 percent of foreign currency secured from international trade previously.

Although export earnings were said to grow by about 30 percent, the rate at which fuel import bills have increased has offset the gains. With world oil price hikes continuing unabated, fuel import bills for the current fiscal year are expected to hit well over the amount of export earnings expected to be secured during the same period.
The outcome of the meeting between the Ethiopian government and oil retailing firms did not finalize as Capital went to print.

Ethiopia is not an oil producing country and so does Eritrea, Djibouti, etc...

So its normal to have the shortage at this time and in the comming future.

So I advise you no to be surprised by fuel shortage.

BUT, When it comes to food shortage in Ethiopia, I bet, you must not only surprised but worry too.

So its better if we summarised this article with this. Meles has nothing to do with the Oil crises in the world and be it in Ethiopia. So this article fails to surprise me at all.

Oil prices hike-up is shared with the rest of the World. Look something else than Ato Melez to blame for this.
When it comes Oil shortage, that ! is another matter, it indicates some thing worng with the provision system from one point or the other, either enough is not imported or the distribution sytem or its sucked by a powerful hidden demand ( uncounted). it will not be so long when the reason would surface up by itself.

Wey weyanea!
They have lost their map and they ended up running in circles. They are so insecure that it is much easier to tolerate abject poverty than open up the economy and manage it with confidence. Of course the elite weyanea thieves do not starve, but it is the public hijacked at gun point that suffers. Their fear has turned suicidal-unless you provide to the basic needs, there will be a limit beyond which people will not tolerate anymore. Yes there is such cut off point even among Ethiopians, who are possibly the world record holders for passivity and submissiveness. It is not an insult. Because once we are there, it is natural to feel resolute and we will have nothing to lose anymore by rebelling. Weyanea is getting us there very fast through its inefficiency, paranoia, corruption, selfishness and indifference to the suffering of tens of millions of people in Ethiopia.

The price rise in food and fuel are only exposing how fake Ethiopian economy is right now to a large extent. Weyanea lost it badly in that in the first place it does not allow private entrepreneurship as cadres are everywhere in charge of crucial decisions with out having the slightest clue. Those who are making unjustified profit are crony capitalists and legalized robbers.

So unless more foreign currency is generated, imports will be very hard to afford. Right now hidden restriction is in place by the National Bank on private business purchase of hard currency. It means businesses are not as much productive and it slows down the economy-no new job creation, if not lay off already. Less or no jobs means less income and rise of poverty.

As the majority of people live in rural areas, they are mainly affected by fertilizer, which is one of the imported items. So fuel price rise, increase in port tariff (does owning a port has anything to do with development? Big No as to Obbo Meles = the passionate murderer), ever disgusting corruption and in efficiency, all in one, are driving Ethiopia to more tragic problems and social breakdown.

Woyanea is going down the suicidal path unwittingly! But on its decaying system, a better socio-political system has to be built!

I have to say this: Tazabi and the "Djiboutian" - it is hard to defend woyanea, no? It is. We understand you. But trying to hide in the world economic crisis and wash your hands off are so ridiculous things to do- 'Gimel serqo magonbes aynet'! The current situation in Ethiopia has everything to do with the inefficiency and many more unbelievable failures weyanea has proudly choose to live with!
Remember managing a national economy requires a wide range of skills and not just plain stupid cadres, which you might regrettably be one!

To "habeshawu"

Sorry for your state of mind pal. If you don't hear it already, Ethiopia is leading the top 10 failed states in the world. She is in her downfall and no one is DREAMING here about the downfall but it's in the making.

About the "ample time" you are talking is not worth of the 17 good years I was under the servetude and merceneray Meles and co. So don't mind about my time.

Now, the question you should ask must be on "how to join hands to lift her from her sorry state"

Tazabi if you are woyanea supporter or not I don't mind. It is your right. I, for real, do not hate the people as human beings. But what I strongly object is Weyaneas' total impunity and recklessness. I have very strong problem with thier motives, hidious socio-political activties and lack of decency.

It is a fact that petrol price is rising globally. If you can not control it, as it is the case, you improve the local economy to better absorb the global shock. Weyanea is not thinking right least because it is illegitimate government. It is fighting for survival and trys to kill everything else with it. It is amply demonstrated and documented.

As to habeshaw, I am proud Ethiopian. That is exactly why I take time to share my ideas here not out of some showiness! But if shabeya would think like I do, woyanea would have been dead and buried by now. But we all know weyanea elites are Eritrean infiltrators and mercenaries-their action speaks volume in this regard:the issue of Assab, their defense of Eritrean independence, their mischievous political calculations-ethnic conflict, harassing ethiopians in Ogaden, the Sudan land grab deal, etc. So shabyea is as much poisonous as weyanea and we know it practically. And weyanea cadres don't mix up our ideas for what they are not!

Diesel and gas shortage is not only in Ethiopia but globally. Poor woyane had to blame for everything.I remembered not long a go the gas was about 75 cents per gallion, now the one gallion of gasoline is about five full dollars. Does it in Ethiopia has to be different? I don't know but blame woyane its ok as long as you have your fat humberger here.

Michael, and to the rest Ethiopian readers.

Michael,Not really of you said, and the skyrocketing prices of fuel energy is globally issues. We knew that brother and Woyane is not responsible for that.

However, there two things that woyane,we demand.1-To save the mount of energy fuels they spend for unnecessary military operations and divert to farmers use of their tractors and irrigation pumps etc.

2.To bring it back the peace and stability of the country to drill the oil reservoir wells and the gas associate basins in the Ogaden regions,Gambela and many other places of the country. This is the right times to drill, produce and sell of any Oils under the ground, due to the extremely rising of global fuel demands.

Therefore, its the Woyans responsibility, for the sake of poor and populous country of Ethiopia,to sit and negotiate of fighting groups of ONLF & OLF as well other opposition groups.Instead of opting to solve and wipe out by military muscle operations, which that again, consumes us a billions of gals/year.Which that our Ethiopian farmers desperately in need to tackle the food hostages, and famines of each few years.

I,knew some you guys, don't much about the coz conflicts of between ONLF and Woyane regimes. It was simply the Federals(woyane)interfered the local elections of the region and the people elected the by the majority populations ousted and replace their(woyane) hand picked men to the power.ONLf members ousted and jailed.Since,1994,The ONLF is demanding,to negotiate with Meles,to avail their full autonomous of the region and live with rest Ethiopians and to live on and exercise with in the Ethiopia, federal constitutions. At that time the major obstacle man was Dr.Abdulmajid, who was a player of dirty politics to survive and stay in powers.Of course the Dr.worry to loose his local elections since that he wasn't a member of the largest and popular Org of ONLF,he was unstable politically and paranoid. He,really create the untrusted envirnment between EPRDEF and the ONLF.He labeled tha,ONLF is a separatested Org.However, the damage is done, and many things were changed since that. We,lost millions of lives for unnecessary wars, which that I believe it, Nugus Meles could solve with in a matter of days if he wants to.He could simply declare peace for Ogadenis and come back in their homes, instead of staying with Issiah to look a support from him,Meles should allow them their rights to administer their regions,so that Ogaden oilsfields could be drill it and would be available for international markets. So,the whole Ethiopia will prosper if Woyane bring the peace to the entire regions of the Horane and PM.Meles,he will be the King of the Kings of the horn and Issia will bow for great and rich Ethiopia. I, hope,to see that of my dream predictions soon,in live and I hope not to see that,Ethiopia scatered in peices and in small countries, which is the dreams of Shabia.

God bless Ethiopia.
