Ethiopia increases fuel price by ten percent

By Groum Abate

Ethiopia's Ministry of Trade and Industry announced on Saturday October 24, that the price of fuel prices will increase by ten percent as of today Sunday October 25.
Sources told Capital that the letter addressed to all oil companies from Ahmed Tusa State Minister of Trade and Industry states that the oil price adjustment would be effective for 15 days from October 25 to November 9.

The state minister in his letter noted that due to the increasing global oil price, his ministry is forced to adjust the price of fuel twice this month (Tikimt).
It was recalled that the council of ministers had issued a regulation on its meeting on October 3, 2008 to readjust fuel prices on a monthly basis by the Ministry of Trade and Industry. This adjustment is an extra-ordinary one.

Even though that is how the economics works indiscriminatingly, I think there are ways that the government of Ethiopia could do by cutting costs n other sector of the government and subsidise the rise of the gas which has already been tough for those who are struggling. Up greading public transportation system will help the people divert into using these facilities.

12.36 for benzene? That is a dollar for a liter and more than 4.00 USD for a gallon of a gas:crazy:

Does it really cost that much in the world market??
How about subsidizing a portion of the society hit hard by this increase.. such as kerosene consumers, taxi drivers etc..?

Development of Public transport is essential in Ethiopia. I hope some day when all the mini buses and small taxis desappear from the streets of Addis, and we all enjoy a much more safe trafic system:-)
