Ethiopia Invades Somalia

A holy war in the Horn?
Oct 10th 2006 | NAIROBI
From The Economist Global Agenda

Islamist rulers in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, have declared a holy war against Ethiopia, after hundreds of Ethiopian soldiers reportedly invaded Somalia. The risk of a regional conflict is growing

Somali Map from The Economist
The Economist

IS A regional war about to erupt in Somalia? Eyewitness reports on Monday October 9th suggested that “several hundred” Ethiopian soldiers, perhaps three battalions, had entered the small town of Burhakaba, well inside Somali territory. There have long been reports of Ethiopian troops at the town of Baidoa, 65km to the north, where a UN-recognised (but not widely Somali-recognised) transitional government sits. And there have been regular and credible reports of Ethiopian military planes landing on dirt strips up and down the country.

Ethiopia has claimed, not very convincingly, that it has no soldiers inside Somalia. In fact it seems that the soldiers were sent in as a response to an approach by Islamist forces, soldiers under the control of a de facto government in Mogadishu, known as the Islamic courts, to within 20km of Baidoa late last week. There has been no fighting, yet. The Islamists were undermanned in the town and retreated without a shot being fired. But such calm is unlikely to last. Burhakaba is a strategically useful forward base for any attack on Mogadishu. Islamist leaders have vowed to take back the town; some unconfirmed accounts say they already have.

In any event, the Ethiopian involvement may have already triggered a conflict. The Islamists have consolidated their remarkable hold over central and south Somalia by appealing to nationalist as well as religious sentiment. By denouncing Ethiopia at every turn, the Islamists are reaching beyond the country's divisive clan politics. In response to the Ethiopian incursion, the Islamists in Mogadishu have declared a jihad, or holy war, against Ethiopia.

Particularly worrying, that declaration came from a leading moderate in the Mogadishu camp, Sheikh Sharif Ahmed. Mr Ahmed had been involved in negotiations for a power-sharing deal with the transitional government in Baidoa. That now looks very much in doubt. A usually peaceful character, Mr Ahmed was seen dressed in combat fatigues and brandishing an AK-47 as he declared war. He told Somalis to “await orders” and announced the raising of a force to drive Ethiopians and foreign peacekeepers, including a few Ugandans, out of Somalia. He denounced some members of the transitional government as traitors.

Some of this is undoubtedly bluster, designed to keep a fractious coalition happy. Although they confiscated weaponry and armoured jeeps from the Mogadishu warlords routed earlier this year, the Islamists have no conventional army to speak of. Intelligence reports suggest that Eritrea and shady Arab sponsors may have passed the Islamists heavy anti-aircraft guns and bits of other air defence systems made in Russia and Ukraine. Should the fighting escalate, these may deter Ethiopian planes from striking at targets in Mogadishu. In other respects the Islamists are ill-equipped to take on the larger Ethiopian force in conventional warfare. Instead, radicals among the Islamists may respond to the Ethiopian incursions with terrorist strikes.

A bombing campaign inside Ethiopia, where a large Muslim population exists, or even attacks in Kenya, could prove devastating for the region. It could also give weight to Osama bin Laden's call for the Horn of Africa to become the world’s third jihadist front, after Iraq and Afghanistan. Of particular interest to the jihadists is luring Ethiopia, an ancient Christian civilisation, into a war against Muslims.

Ethiopia’s motivation is mixed. It worries that Eritrea, an old foe, is supporting the Islamists in Somalia. It blames Somali Islamists for a number of bomb attacks in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, and elsewhere in central Ethiopia. Ethiopia's prime minister, Meles Zenawi, a former rebel leader himself, has promised a hard response to further bombings in an effort to put off any potential new rebel groups inside Ethiopia. That is risky, but his government is worried by the threat from Mogadishu. Mr Zenawi should know about that: he once sheltered in Mogadishu as a rebel fighter seeking to bring down the regime in Addis Ababa.

Why is Meles playing with fire?
Why can't he leave Somalians alone?
What is wrong with this man? Can't he lead Ethiopia peacefully? Does he have to go after everyone?

It ia not a holy war in the Horn, but unholy alliance of Western countries with the racist and unelected regime of Ethiopia that invaded Muslim Somalia.

If we see the recent history of our region Somalia was supported to invade Ethiopia by the West in 1970s and the war was not then called Holy war, and now the West label the invasion of Somalia as a Holy war.

Do you mean Crusade?. Not in our name, and Ethiopians have lived for centuries before Western meddling in our region peacefully, and this war is to destroy us and live with their food aid like animals when their oil companies steal our resources in collaboration with tyrants of the region.

Ethiopians in the past defended their boundary against Somalia and never crossed to spread anything, because we are all muslims and christians living side by side and we do not see each other as a holy and unholy, but as followers of God who have big place in the holy Quran and holy Bible.

Those who wanted us to follow the paths of Iraq and Afghanistan by encouraging Ethiopia to invade muslim country we are telling them Ethiopians will not die in Somali soil, and rather die fighting the unelected Western allied racist regime in Ethiopian soil.

"If we see the recent history of our region Somalia was supported to invade Ethiopia by the West in 1970s and the war was not then called Holy war, and now the West label the invasion of Somalia as a Holy war." Tedla

-Somalia was "supported" to invade Ethiopia in 1970's but the initiative and full desire to claim the southeastern half of Ethiopia (Ogaden) was still Somalia's. It is NOT the west that labeled it holy war, but the islamists themselves(They declared it!!)
It is true that Meles is using this situation to his advantage. But, that still does not discount the reality that the safety of Ethiopia depends on the Somalian transition government taking power. See past the politics in Ethiopia and look at what has happened in the past. Every chance they got a military capability, the Somalis have tried to enforce the idea of 'greater Somalia' which includes a large portion of Ethiopia.
We know that the current islamists are getting support from the Arabs and Eritrea(The rediculous Esayas persecutes Orthodox Christians and wants Eritrea to become a member of the Arab league). So, if the Islamists are enlisting the help of other countries, why shouldn't we?
Remember, the delusion that the Islamists will sit quietly after building up their power is a very mistaken thought. Whether it is Meles or some other leader in power, the response to the threat should be the same and not recognizing this(and instead bickering about Woyane this and Woyane that) is truly unEthiopian and goes against everything Ethiopia stood for in her history as a Christian Kingdom. All we want is peace and harmony among its inhabitants of various faiths. But a response to this threat of instability is justified.

Somali people free their land from tplf occupants soon and they have both moral and legal right to do so.
Somali understands the Ethiopian public opinion that the tplf govt. not backed by the people and the armed forces conscious enough to understand the cheep legesses’ intervention politics and refuse to fight. For Somalia, therefore, to give a lesson to legese and his watch dogs once and for all is like to herd cattle, just because of the fact that the Islamists fully backed by the people of Somalia. The Stalinist legesse, once again, like the 1998-2000 Ethio-Eritrean war want to scarify the young generation, no way. Tenquay lerasu ayawkem, so does legesse.

This is not a western country invading an arab country to spread democracy. This is a fight for survival. At the end of the day, it is also to the best interest of Somalis in general. As tyrant as he may be, Meles has a legit point in going after the spread of Islamic radicalism in our back yard. I would rather have blamed him if he didn't do anything about it. ICU should be destroyed before it gets any more strength. It is a danger to our existence if radical islamists are allowed to breed in the region. This has nothing to do with the peaceful religion of Islam. It is like Christians complaining for going after Hitler and other Nazis just because they were Christians. Islamic Radicalism is at a point where it is taking its place in human history along with Communism, Facism, and Nazism. All should work hard to stop it.

Can't any of you relent. Everything has to do with tplf this, tplf that and on and on. Stop for a minute and learn your history and learn to recognize what is really going on. I challenge you to discuss this issue intelligently and by presenting the facts, not by bringing tplf into every article posted here. You know that there is much more going on. How come I don't hear any condemnation of OLF, or ONLF for that matter or that incapable CUD that sold Ethiopia out to the separatist groups I previously stated.

What I am really tired of reading is the garbage and nonsense analysis about somalia by ignorant and wanna be experts. Are there any moderates among the terrorists? How many times can they declare Jihad against Ethiopia? As far as I know, the Ethiopian Muslims are the most peace loving people and can't be employed or trained to do any attack against Ethiopia. That is against their religion. It is true that the extremists who are aligned themselves with Shabiya will try but will fail with the help of the Ethiopian people. I even felt sad for the PM to wait such long before taking any action regardless of the international community outcry. The so called international community is in fact giving a green light to those nations supporting the terrorists. Countries like Egypt, Libya, Eritrea and Pakistan are working day and night to destablize Ethiopia by what ever means and Ethiopia shouldn't wait until the fire starts burning in its territory. It must put it off as soon as possible.

Ethiopia isn't a weak nation which can be threatened by thugs who are using religion as a cover to advance their terrorist agenda. No matter what the Moquadisho thugs say, Ethiopia must send now enough soldiers to crush these thugs and must silence them before they hold Somalis hostage of their nation.

Now we are entering in to a very serious business. Should Ethiopia going to be another nation with a sucide bombers blowing themselves up every day?

Is it to see Ethiopian children become the victims of the jihad bomb? How many agonies this country has to bear?

The truth is that Meles, for the reasons known only to him is taking our country to this senseless conflict.

I hope he respects the the will of the people. And, engage recalcitrant horn of Africa nations to resolve Somalias problems together.

The military is not the only way to steady Somalia. In fact Somalia won't settle down without a political solution, that strikes the right balance among factions, which have tentacles across the country.

Knowing this fact, why he chooses war with a lawless militias driven by only their fanatic Islamo fascism?

Lets ask the sessible questions "Is it in Ethiopias best interest to fight with Somalia? or Meles just wantes to extend his political life by opening another war front?"

Peace to Ethiopia !

Legesse Wodi Zenawi once again igniting nationalistic fervor among the two people for his sinister and evil design. Some of us will be fooled again and adopt jingoist attitude. The whole world knows Somalis have irredentist claims to some parts of Ethiopia and Kenya. However, we do not see Kenya invading Somalia. The issue is Legesee Zenawi bidding big powers' agenda at the expense of young poor Ethiopian soldiers. It has never been Ethiopia's agenda to invade Somalia, except to defend itself from aggression. As it is, we are destined to live together forever. But the big powers on whose bidding Legesse is waging war now will not be there forever. Come another time, they may even encourage the other side to ignite conflict with us. It is quite possible, the British played the religion card when they encouraged ardent christian Atse Yohannes to do their bidding and march to Khartoum to rescue the colonial army led by General Gordon which was besieged by nationalist forces. Did the British care or shown their gratitude once their troops safel meade it back to England? But huge price was paid by the lives of Africans Christians and Muslims alike including later the Emperor's own.
Listen from VP Cheney other U.S. officials' interviews, how leaders such as Musharraf are to be encouraged, cajoled, "bribed" if need be intimidated to fight America's war anywhere in the world so that the home front will be safe. Hence, TPLF stooges spare us your preaching about patriotic appeals and pseudo intellectual analysis. Considering our history of being invaded and victim of aggression, Ethiopians will never be for invasion or aggression of another country. As we would not like to be invaded by foreign powers, just because they say we have despicable regime in power, i would grant the same can be said to Somalis. Do not forget the British used the despicable regime card pointing the atrocities of Emperor Tewodros when they sent forces to oust hime while Mussolini tried to legitimise its invasion by giving it a civilising mission toward ending the barabaric slavery practice.

Dear all,

Some of the comments we read from the so called Ethiopian Diasporas exposes the short sightedness of Ethiopia’s opposition groups of the day.

To me the case of Somalia is simple and straight. Ethiopia must defend her survival before the terrorist groups expand their evil intention to the main land Ethiopia.

As for the comment we read from some individual i.e. the Diasporas – I think it should be expected.

After all some if not most aligned themselves with ONLF (Ogaden National Liberation Front) in the name of AFD and by default they are supporting what UIC stands for i.e. declare Ogaden as the part of Greater Somalia.

To me, the so called Alliance for Freedom and Democracy appears to be the hallmarks of an organization infested by anti Ethiopian elements waiting to exploit opportunities.

The sham alliance i.e. CUD with ONLF i.e. (Ogaden National Liberation Front) is a good evidence to augment this argument.

I therefore raise the following questions to the so called Ethiopians in the Diaspora who became politically active after the May 2005 election:

- Aren't the ONLF fighting to separate Ogaden from Ethiopia?

- Isn't the current development in Somalia a matter of legitimate concern for Ethiopia's stability ?

- Aren't some of the top militia leaders of the so called Islamic Courts wanted terrorists who blew up hotels and railway lines in Addis and the whole of eastern Ethiopia ?

- How could any Ethiopian political group find an alliance in the country's strategic enemies ?

- Just why would your camp CUD sell out the country's national security concerns in exchange for help in securing political power to Arat Kilo?

AFD's stance on developments in Somalia proves what a diabolical future we can expect if they ever come to power.

Yesterday the AAPO/CUD and others hypocritical groups have been accusing EPRDF for letting Eritrea separate from her motherland Ethiopia.

To me that was a greatest error EPRDF committed - as I strongly believe that the separation of Eritrea effectively left Ethiopia geographically isolated and unable to detect and influence any aggression even by some of the weakest in the region.

And now the opposition of the day i.e. the CUD camp aligned themselves to lend hands to the country's long standing enemies to do just what the EPRDF have been accused of 15 years ago.

How cruelly history repeats itself?

Regards, Zena
