Ethiopia - Jonathan Dimbleby's interview with PM Meles Zenawi.

In this episode of The Big Interview, Jonathan Dimbleby travels to Ethiopia for an exclusive interview with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia.

Zenawi, who has led the African country since 1995, talks to Dimbleby about his government's education policies and the way in which they are being used as a catalyst for change.


Ethiopia's enrollment rate is up to 91.3 per cent at primary level, with the government having pledged to increase child literacy by 50 per cent by 2015.

But are these policies enough to make Ethiopia a lower middle-income country in 20 years? And how does the Prime Minister counter allegations that some of his actions make him nothing less than a run-of-the-mill African autocrat?

when he last visited 30 years ago. for some
meles claiming to step down is more important than the growing schools and litracy rate in ethiopia.i agree meles has to leave office to give another person a chance and take some of the bad things with him but it is not the end of ethiopias problem. unless ethiopia defeat the grinding poverty, it realy doesnt matter who is sitting in arat kilo, except to the person and those few people around him/her.

First of all I would like to thank Nazret.com for chosing this enterview to come here, I believe it would be very important for us (only Ethiopians) to discuss on this issue. I hope everyone here will give a matured and responsible comment on this issue.
Having said that, I got the chance to watch the interview and I believe the PM is really determined to meet the education goal put by the country. I will give a big credit for our PM for just having such an ambitious plan. I believe it is a very realistic plan, which I would say a very important madicine to all of the problems we have. Education! Education! Education! that is the only tool by which we can solve our inherent prblems once and for all. We are already seeing the fruit of it, and with no doubt when this goal is achieved, which I truly belive we will, the people of ethiopia will get the ultimate freedom. The people of Ethiopia will then be invincible. They will not be manipulated by the different ill will groups. The people of Ethiopia will stand for themselves. More over, they will speed up the development process the same way some asian countries did it. I pray for those days to come. I would really congradulate the people of Ethiopia on this. We are really getting the torch! At last but not least I would like to thank, from the bottom of my heart, out PM, the great Meles Zinawi, for starting up this revolution. Whether you get a chance to see the result, while you are in the power or not, the success we are going to see will reamain to be your legacy. Ethiopia will surly have sears to lead this journey to the end. Once agin I would like to thank our PM for starting this historical and very vital revolution.

:D One thing is for sure, Meles will not seek another term, he wants to make sure, the Ethiopian democratic change and process is not hinderd, by him running for the 3rd term. Defying his critics, and ment when he says that he will move the country forward in to a viable democracy. Had it been in England Mr. Meles should have resigned and put for justice not asked to appologise as David tried to do. Mr. Meles had ordered his body guards to kill innocent civilians for standing against his dictatorial rule. He was asked to take every possible action including closing down the free media, put in jail the opposition leaders, journalists, union leaders and others at the request of few military and TPLF leaders to save themselves from what may happen if democratialy elected government is established. Why this news come this late ? The interview was held on the 23rd of May and come public 0n the 31st after morethan a week. Mr Jonathan Dimbleby you got such a big news and why you had to hold for 7/8 days in this high tech world? I smell some sort of trick because I don't belive WOYANE related news. It sounds interview by invitation. As I mentioned earlier, even if Meles resigns, it could be very possible that he gona have a remote control from somewhere to manipulate the pseudo-prime minster to be selected (not elected). M. Zenawi is true to himself, his past and his future. He couldn’t hide his true feelings in the use of brute force, if his autocracy is in danger. He indirectly told us that he is ready to use forceful suppression of any opposition in the future, but with a logical amount of bloodshed. To him what matters is not human sacrifice as such, but excess human sacrifice.
He couldn’t dare say “I wish we could have done it without any bloodshed what so ever”. Addiction is a very strong phenomenon that dominates a person’s life. Addiction to blood is the worst of all.
As much as resigning from office is concerned, let’s see it before we comment. Even if he resigns, should we expect a change of policy as much as democracy, freedom and human rights are concerned? Of course not! The crown of the emperor will be transferred to an other true child of TPLF/woyane, who will continue to rule Ethiopia with the same iron fist. We should also be sure that M.Zenawi will always be there, behind the scene to move the string so that his puppets will continue to dance to the same tune.

I can't stand the dude, so I barely saw the interview. His arrogance and demeanor just turns me off. It doesn't seem like he was sorry for the killings after the election, but that the interviewer put words in Meles' mouth. Obviously, Meles's action speak otherwise.

If I recall, Meles was a president, and now is a PM. I wouldn't be surprised if he stays in power under a different title, maybe a head of state or a king. It's really hard to give up power in Africa.

I don't know if this was asked in the interview but at any rate, somebody please help me understand why schooling is upto 10th grade in the rest of the country and upto 12th grade in Tigray.

the educational policy goes the same for every state in the country. please let us learn to prove some thing before we talk.

10th grade matric exam is for the students in every part of the country.

This is how it works in every state of the country whether tigrai or Somali or Amhara.
Students learn up to 10 and take exam prepared by the ministry of education those who pass continue to prepare for Universities in the 11 and 12 grades and then they join one of the universities in the country. Those who failed to score enough join either diplom programs of 10+1 to 10+3 or join technical vacational training(TVT) institutions to learn specific professional field of study. This policy is the same for every state in the country.

Even if it is not the same we can give constructive comments like, let us say if Tigrai has better policy than Amhara Go and ask the Amhara state authorities to explain their reason for having such a policy and recommend better policies.

Please, Please let us not be based on "Alubalta"
