Mohamed Keita of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) writes, Ethiopia has lifted ban of websites that the government find them to be critical. CPJ's own website has been blocked in Ethiopia since August of last year and it is now once again accessible in Ethiopia, Mr Keita writes.

The Annual Human Rights Report by the US State Department has expressed concerns about Internet freedom in Ethiopia. The report said, "The government restricted access to the Internet and blocked opposition Web sites, including the sites of the OLF, ONLF, Ginbot 7, and several news blogs and sites run by opposition diaspora groups, such as the Ethiopian Review, CyberEthiopia.com, Quatero Amharic Magazine, Tensae Ethiopia, and the Ethiopian Media Forum".

Reports from Addis Ababa have also confirmed that nazret.com is now accessible in Ethiopia. nazret has been blocked in Ethiopia since 2005 and we have seen a spike in traffic from Ethiopia since the beginning of 2009.

It's really encouraging that the ban has been lifted. However, it has to be noted also that these sites should never abuse their exercising their power in the local community. We need information. But, we need them balanced and reported accurately.

I wonder what would be made of this development. could it be because EPRDF up to some thing? may be they want to arrest all us who under fake names criticize the government on our arrival home? I am paranoid because that is exactly what being a diaspora does to you. but then again who said most the people on the net cursing any thing ethiopian are ethiopians?

Ethiopia today, despite the name of the ruling unelected Fascist nefsegeday tplf party. It combines a basically pro tplf capitalist economy with tplf control of key industries, and buttresses a one party state with virulent nationalism. It is a perfect example of a fascist state.
Fascist tplf is governed by groups of nefsegeday bunch of thugs as friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability.
Unless we are free from this bunch of unelected nefsegeday thugs what is the point of banning a webste and lifting a website ban would do to a voicless and defensless ppl under cruel tyranny?

WE WILL OWN OUR FREEDOM!

Ethiopia did this and that is not a correct description.

Respectfully, please report correctly and precisely so.

Ethiopia does not yet have a legitimate government elected by the people and who works for the people.
That is the true picture our nation as we and the rest of the world know it.

Can only fool once or make a mistake once!

We have a long way to go before we see freedom of speech and communication in Ethiopia.

I can only say that the government must find itself in a dilemma and wants to appease people before the election.

If we recall we all thought there will be freedom of everything before the 2005 election.

All that aspiration and hope was dashed along with the freedom to elect a new leader(s). Since then it was as living in hell.

at best this can only be deceit by showing compromise where it hearts the least!considering the number of people in Ethiopia who have access to this technology. If EPRDF were serious about this, it would have started by loosening its iron grip on the private mainstream media inside the country.

Before the 2005 election the rejected hand picked mayor of Addis was busy destroying houses in the pretext of development.

He taught that will get him elected.

Now this is what is going on.

Destroying houses , people thrown out on the street for homelessness, digging Church graves yards and throwing out buried bodies in the pretext of eminent domain and building roads.
