Ethiopia celebrates 112th anniversary of Battle of Adwa Victory

Ethiopia marks the 112th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa Victory, in which the Ethiopian army defeated the invading Italian army on March 1, 1896. Ethiopia was the first and only country in Africa that defeated a European colonial power during the 'scramble for Africa', making it the only independent nation in Africa that has never been colonized.

Ethiopia under Emperor Menelik II decimated the invading Italian army in the Battle of Adwa, which made it a symbol of independence and pride for all black people around the World. The colors of Ethiopia's flag [Green, Yellow, Red] have been adopted by many African countries after their independence and school children across Africa are taught about the Battle of Adwa.

---------
From The archives of the New York Times on The Battle of Adwa

On March 4, 1896, the New York Times had this headline about the Battle of Adowa
"ITALY'S TERRIBLE DEFEAT" The New York Times March 4, 1896.

Here is an excerpt from The New York Times published on March 4, 1896.

ITALY'S TERRIBLE DEFEAT

Three thousand Men Killed, Sixty Guns and All Provisions Lost.

Baratieri's Strategy Condemned.

All Available Steamers for Transport of Reinforcements to Abyssinia are Ordered.

Persistent Rumor of Ministry's Fall

Rome, March 3
- The present campaign against the Abyssinians threatens to become one of the most disastrous in which the Italians arms have ever taken part, and what the final outcome will be it would be hard to predict. It was rumored today that the latest defeat of the Italians by King Menelik had compelled Ministry to resign, owing to the popular disapproval of the Government's policy, but tonight this report is denied.

Details received here today of the defeat on Sunday of the Italian Army show that the Italian losses were very heavy, they being placed by some at 3,000 killed. It is still impossible to ascertain the precise losses, but popular opinion credits the report that the number of killed is not overstated. Thus far the reports make no mention of the number of wounded. Among the dead are Gen. Albertone, Commander of the Left Brigade, and Gen. Dabormida, Commander of the Right Brigade.

The news of this latest disaster has caused the greatest excitement throughout Italy, and the Opposition party is taking advantage of it to make violent attacks upon the Government's policy in attempting to extend the sphere of Italian influence in Abyssinia.

The Pope is greatly disturbed by the news.

Among the many reports current today was one to the effect that Gen. Baratieri had committed suicide, being unable to endure the humuliation of his defeat.

Published on March 4, 1896 in the New York Times.

On March 2, 1896, the New York Times wrote the following article.

ABYSSINIANS DEFEAT ITALIANS.; Both Wings of Baratieri's Army Enveloped in an Energetic Attack

Massaowa, March 2, 1896 - Gen. Baratieri attacked the Abyssinians yesterday. Gens. Albertone, Arimondi, and Dabormida commanded the left, centre, and right brigades, respectively. Gen. Ellina commanded the reserve.

The Italians captured the passes leading to Adowa without opposition. Gen. Albertone, with four native battalions and four mountain batteries , engaged the enemy, but where soon overcome by overwhelming odds.

Gen. Arimondi was ordered to cover the retreat, but his position prevented him from complying with the order. The Abyssinians in the meantime made an energetic attack, which soon extended to the whole Italian front and enveloped both wings.

A desperate struggle ensued. and finally the Italians were compelled to abandon their positions. The nature of the ground prevented the batteries from moving. The Italians are retiring behind Belesa. The losses sustained are unknown.

Unfortunately there are demented people who are trying their best to shade darkness into the history of this glorious super-man named MENELIK.

There are others who attempted and are attempting to redicule this brilliant black victory.

There are others who label the first black general in the history of the whole world, who ripped into pieces a well organized, armed to the neck white force, as a colonizer who invaded their land.

Anyway their moan neither adds nor deducts anything to the glorious history of MENELIK.

He is the hero of ETHIOPIA!!

He is man of the Millenium!!

He is the pride of AFRICA!!

Who had to defend Eritrea? It was the rulers of Ethiopia. Alula was able to stop the Italians around Massawa. After the death of Yohannes, Baldisera rushed to Asmara and the Eritrea colony was formed and Eritreans were left alone and defenseless. But we are now blaming them although we did nothing to help them. We thank Menelik for his leadership to defeat the Italians, but the land locked Ethiopia was formed during his reign. Cutting the right-hands and left hands of the captured Ascaro Eritreans was also a great mistake made by our Ethiopian fathers; because the victimized Ascaros were under the control of Italians and we were also unable to do anything to save them. Also, all the colonizing powers had Ascaros, it is not special with the Eritreans. I believe we have to admit that the Eritreans have always been victims; this is the only way to win their hearts.

The Python,

Hey chill out .. I just ask a question if you know someone educated in Alliance Francaise or Lycee Guebre Mariam they will tell you that we were bombarded by French & European history and nothing about Ethiopian history. The only book we were reading during Amarigna class year after year was "Araya" about Madame de Bonfoie.

So, you cannot blame me for that.
plus if one does not come from habesha family how do you expect us to know. From the area where I come from, they teach us about our history not habesha artificial history.

And I live in Kuala Lumpur and not in Singapore. I wish it was the other way around but for the time being I should be content with what I have.

Woizero Condjo,

On one hand you are rightly asking a lesson on Ethiopian history, on the other hand you are blabbing how Emiye Minilek "looted the land of the Oromos and sold Djibouti for 99 birr," aren't you contradicting yourself? There are many good things Minilek have achieved for his country and people especially comparing to the Somali Origin Mohammad Giragn's disastrous expansionist rule that has brought calamity not only to the country's human resource but also to the generations old historical artifacts and documents. However, since you have admitted your ignorance about our history, i am willing to forgive any of your badmouthing. Here is Some from wiki , but i am not sure how accurate it is.

In 1889, while claiming the throne against Mengesha, Menelik signed at Wuchale in Wollo province (Uccialli in Italian) a treaty with Italy, acknowledging the establishment of the new Italian Colony of Eritrea with its seat at Asmara. This colony had previously been part of the northern Tigrayan territories from which Ras Mangasha and his allies such as Ras Alula generated support, and the establishment of the Italian colony weakened the northern Rases. However, it was soon found that the Italian version of one of the articles of the treaty placed the Ethiopian Empire under an Italian protectorate, while the Amharic version did not. Emperor Menelik denounced it and demanded that the Italian version be changed. Negotiations failed, so Menelik renounced the treaty, leading Italy to declare war and invade from Eritrea. After defeating the Italians at Amba Alagi and Mekele, Menelik inflicted an even greater defeat on them, at the Battle of Adowa on March 1, 1896, forcing them to capitulate. A treaty was signed at Addis Ababa recognizing the absolute sovereign independence of Ethiopia.

That makes me nothing but cry with joy while keeping my head up! We are expansionist and colonialist Busters, killers, masters and We are Ethiopians!!!

However, don't ever tell yourselves this lie that question the patriotism of Tigres. If Tigray betrayed her mother land, the war wouldn't take place at Adwa. Minilik was able to march to Adwa safely because he was embraced by the heroic people of Tigray who probably bled more than any other nationalities because of their proximity to our hitoric enemies. Mind you I am not from Tigray. But your lie is an insult to all those who love their country and respect all our heros.

Despite your fabricated historical facts and ill intentioned interpretations, Minilek's leadership was even better, he was not only a magnificent political leader who has managed to convince the people at every corner of the counry to rally behind him, he actually was ready to battle the enemy till the last drop of his blood when he left the throne in Addis. Finally Sharamara, don't forget that you are insignificant for anything Ethiopian history, it is beyond your comprehension and there is no wonder why you made the mistake.

Woizer Condjo,

I very much like inquiring minds with the purpose of shading light on the unknown, willing to learn and accept, the reality, the truth even if it is bitter and against ones wish. However, from your writing I am sensing the desire to discredit, denigrate and belittle the Ethiopian 'Yekurt ken lij' Emiye Minilek who have thought aggressors that Africa has been in fact inhibited by HUMAN BEINGS and are ready to sacrifice their dear life to protect what is rightfully theirs, their freedom. He heralded the message to all African brothers that we are not meant to be chained and shipped like our cacao and ivory across Atlantic, we are not meant to collect tobacco, cotton and sugarcane for white "masters", but affirming and securing that takes the ultimate sacrifice, courage and unity. As far as i am concerned that was the biggest and most important issue for all Africans at the time, Freedom, and Minilek achieved it for his people. He demonstrated the fact that Africans too can have their own country and can determine their own destiny, which is the equivalence of Albert Einstein's and Bohr's ground breaking contributions to Science. Priceless! And Woizero, when the Europeans left him and his people alone, he tried to the best he could to introduce modernity to the society. I agree that he shouldn't have abandoned Djibouti the way he did, but i don't think he has done it for the money or simply wanted to get rid off the land and people, he must have been left out of options, short of the means to defend it. (Meles was very much aware of the consequences of landlocked Ethiopia, had both the political and military power to avert it, but he wanted his mother's county to have the best bargaining means to compete with relatively giant Ethiopia, that is why he is a banda.)

Oh thank you Babur-Hawareysa! Woizero, during Minileks era both Women of any class and the poor were not allowed to attend school even in relatively civilized Europe let alone in Minilek's Ethiopia. It wouldn't hurt you if you try to be a little bit realistic and accept the truth i.e. Minilek was one of the greatest Kings.

Wozeiro Conjo,

Menelik and Haile are related. All of them belong to the Shewan House of Kenaa Kirsho. It all goes back to the time Ahmed Gragn reigned havoc on the Christians of Ethiopia. The Emperor Lebna Dengal was running from one province to another in order to save his domain from the Adal/Turk invasion. Eventually he died hiding in a monastery in Tigray. But two wings of claimants followed in his footstep. One was called the Gondar branch, they settled in Gondar, defeated Gragn and ruled the nation for over three centuries. The second branch, moved to Shewa and evolved separately from the first branch. They sometimes paid tribute to the Emperor in Gondar, but most of the time they were independent. They faced southward and mixed heavily with other Ethiopians esp. Oromos and Guraghes. The most illustrious of this rulers was King Sahle Selassie of Shewa, who ruled for about the first third of the 19th century. He had many children, and most Shewans are related to him or married into his family. Menelik is the son of his first born and succesor, King Haile Melekot. Haile Selassie's father Ras Mekonnen is the son of a daughter of Sahle Selassie, Tenagne Work. I hope that answers your question.

As for what Menelik did. I think given the limited resources the nation had to offer, and the constant encroachment of colonialists and hostile neighbors he has done a lot. The first hospital, schools, telephone, train, any signs of development showed up during his reign. He also, unlike what many haters now claim, did not interfer in local adminstration of the different regions. The main concern was that they had to pay a certain amount of tax, and show up to fight, if they are called to wage a war. Prime example of this is, if you see most of the rulers, they were locals. Tigray(Ras Mengesha), Gondar/Semien(Ras Wollie), Wollo( Ras Mikael), Wag/Sokota(Wagshum Gwangul), Gojjam (Negus Tekle Haymanot), Afar(Sultan Mohamed Hanfari), Jimma(Sultan Aba Jiffar), Wellega (Dej Egote), as for the Oromo is concerned most of his main generals were Oromo like Habte Giyorgis and Balcha, and many Oromo greats like Bokan Melae, Borru Terro, Demo Bunae, Gurgi Kuni, Mani Buli, Assenu Odai, Bunae Kushlae, many many more played an immense part in making Ethiopia a nation. For example, Demo Bunae was the husband of his aunt Kelemework Sahle Selassie. He ruled most of the land from Adaa to Awash. Neche teff wetet yemesele yemibelabet, banda bayew kuter lehachu yemizrekerekew, lol.

This was the truth, and ye mata mata, what ever the looter and haters and occupiers say, Ethiopia will be for Ethiopians.

LONG live the victory of Adwa, long live the good name of EMIYAE MENELIK.

You cannot assume that I have the "the desire to discredit, denigrate and belittle the Ethiopian Emperor"

I just ask what he has done for the country and you were rambling like usual about anything and without any substance.

FYI, the greatest achievement of Menelik is the fact that he has created what Ethiopia is today. He and his army have pushed the boundaries all the way to Ogaden, Harargue, and the Southern part of the country and to the West in Gambella and so forth.. Without him we would not have all the Ethiopia that we now have.
Even though the process of expansion was not without any critics but at least now we have this great country with all kind of ethnic group living under one flag and we are proud of calling it "Ethiopia" In my opinion that was his greatest achievement.

Imagine if Harargue and Ogaden was not under Ethiopia, by now we might have been part of Somalia and that means total chaos.

Not a problem. We do not see eye to eye on everything, but as I have said before, I truly admire your independence. I also believe its long over due that Ethiopia get a Muslim leader, preferably Oromo/Muslim leader. The only critical requirement, as you once stated, he be an Ethiopian first. Its the one good way forward. After 17 years of muderous Derg, and another 17 years of the most keffafay ethnic pest any country had to deal with, the nation is on the brink of total disintegration. That is the worst fear I have. It should be the utmost concern for every single Ethiopian, beginning with what is happening in the Ogaden.

Madam Arogit,

When i mentioned the names of the Eropean scientists, i was not mixing Science with Ethiopian history or Minilek's great achievements with that of Bohr's. I thought you are familiar with the kind of writing, but it was a mistake on my part. The theme of the comment was one thing, and that was it is only the ignorants and the idiots of your type who would dare to question the king's role in the country's history when he is an icon to all black people. It was my way of narrating the man's great achievements that goes beyond the nation's boundaries. A way of showing the parallels between an Ethiopian questioning Minilek's leadership and an African American denying the contributions of Martin Luther King in the fight against racism and the respect of human right. Perhaps, the burden of your age have already exposed you for Alzheimer, but go back and read the series you wrote and you may able to understand what i am talking about.

Oh, I forget to say, Minilek did NOT create Ethiopia, the country Ethiopia has existed there for centuries that dates back beyond the birth of Christ. You have admitted you don't know anything about Ethiopian history, which i have accepted happily and should remain that way.

The victory at Adwa belongs to those who paid with their lives in defense of their country. Those, whose homes turned into the battle ground, stared the fascist Italians and their mercenary bandas eye to eye and died by the thousands in defense of their homeland. When the last mortar went silent it was pretty obvious to the world that Ethiopia wasn’t going to be an easy prey to European colonialism. Emperor Menelik was no where to be found at the Battle of Adwa and the victory is a victory of the Ethiopian masses. It is a crying shame that the history of the Battle of Adwa was written by those who preyed on the very people who paid the ultimate price to win the war against the Italian invaders. Emperor Menelik is nothing but a criminal who is not worthy of being a decent human being let along defending Ethiopia. This is a man who mutilated thousands of Oromos in their own homes and sold Ethiopian sovereign territories for his own personal gains. The history of Adwa will be written in the name of the anonymous victors who gave up the one thing they couldn’t afford to give. Ethiopian history will be rewritten in the name of its anonymous heroes who paid with their lives and it could never be attributed to tribal bandits who denigrated our mosaic history and traded in our name.

And the Southern part of Ethiopia and the West was NEVER under Ethiopia until the end of the 19 century.

By the way the fierce worrier and the brave fighter at Adewa battle were in fact Oromo’s. However by the help of the colonial power of that time, the Oromo land occupied and still remained under the rule the Abyssinians.
We the Oromo’s who comprise half part of the Ethiopian population have the cardinal right to decide for self determination or make alliance with all other oppressed no Tigray nationalities in Ethiopia.

Blabbering and judging in a virtual invironment is way too different from facing well armed European conolialists with sword and spear. That is all about love for ones country, determination and bravery. These people with pride and dignity in a ragged terrain of Africa taught unforgatable lesson to white superemacist and herald the birth of proud Africa.
But, our generation, is wagging tails to western masters and became wilful slave in contradiction to what our fathers gave their all to see their children the masters of their destiny. We shall stop for a while and remember our forefathers, their wish and sacrifice. We shall not sell our nations and behave mercenaries. If not surpassing, lets behave their bravery and determination. And our world, our Africa, our nations would have been much better.

Only mannerless 'ethiopians' or Ethiopia haters would think of ruining the 112nd anniversary celebration of the victory of this significance; Menelik II is the MAN.

There will be other times and venues to discuss the MAN's shortcomings. Not even the worst hater of England would think of belittling Winston Churchil on V-day celebration.

I'm from the south of Ethiopia. Well, most of my ancestors are. I was born after the land which was taken from my ancestors were taken away from the Neftegna Land Lords, who by the way were not all related to Menilik II by ethnic or blood.

Menelik II was the MAN of his time. As someone mentioned above, Churchil was in London when the allied forces crushed the Nazis but Menilik was very near to Adwa if not in Adwa when the battle was won by the gallant Ethiopian poorly armed forces.

Tigray suffered the most during that Italian invasion. The sentiment of Meles Zenawi and TPLF stooges doesn't reflect the heroism of Tigray at all. Many Tigrayans were ashamed and embarrassed when TPLF propagandists and revisionists of history like 'professor' Endrias Eshete told the nation that victory of the battle of Adwa was Tigrayan victory to the most part back in the early 1990s. Some say now TPLF were saying that to make some extreme Oromos who hate Ethiopia and Menelik like the OPDO happy. [You can see the public outrage at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa the very next day on Tamagn Beyene's video.]

Ras Alula could've challenged Menelik's claim to the throne following Yohannes IV's martyrdom and Asmara was Alula's town for more than three decades but he chose not to for the sake of Ethiopian survival. There was no country called Eritrea at that time; it was the Ethiopian province called Bahre Medir when Tewodros and then Yohannes ruled Ethiopia and when Makda, who would have been Eritrean today, was the Queen of Sheba in ancient times. Yes she ruled over Yemen too but only her son Menelik I estableshed the dynasty which ended in 1974 in Ethiopia.

Menilik II was outraged that his own people, the newly named eritreans, would dare support white enemy and kill their own people. During the battle of Adwa and later during the battle at Maychew, many Eritreans defected and fought against the Italians who gave them the weapons to kill their own people.

Ras Emeru and Ras Desta were the only two Ras's who fought on to the end after the second war against Italian invasion ended in defeat at Maychew. Both Emeru and Desta were hunted down and bombed and yet they kept on fighing a suiciadal war because they each had thousands of eritreans in their ranks who recently joined their forces. Those eritreans were not remembering how angry Menelik II was on their fathers and grandfathers forty years earlier; they were fighting for their own black Ethiopian dignity. Ras Emeru would agree to be taken prisoner on condition that his eritrean soldiers are allowed to cross the border to Kenya safely. Ras Desta would be hunted down in his mother's Gurage country side and hunged by the fascist Italians. If Haile Selasse remained in the country to fight on instead of fleeing to Jerusalem, his fate would've been the same and the five year struggle in which Ethiopian patriots eventually succeeded would've been impossible. At the end the fact that Haile Selasse was alive and coming back saved the day in Ethiopia's continuity. Meles Zenawi's ethnic politics was practiced by fascist Mussolini in those five bruttal years.

Harerge was one of the nightmares of Mussolini because the Oromos in Gara-Muleta and other areas were fighting against it ferociously, no less than in Sodo or the entire Shewa or Wellega for that matter. Menelik's ghost was haunting the fascist Italians. Dejach Gebremariam Gari, one of the most memorable Ethiopian war heroes fought and died for his country in the east/south front as one of the other two leaders beside Ras Desta Damtew. The Oromo Dejazmach Gebremariam Gari is now remembered with a french school in Addis Ababa.

Oromos and Gurages and Wolayitas etc never shied away from fighinting invaders before or after the glorious battle of Adwa. That is one of the main reasons why Ethiopians have deep respect to one another's ethnicity and why Ethiopians are the most interethnicaly intermarried people from the top to bottom and for generations at that. That is why religion plays very little role in Ethiopia when it comes to division.

Nothing can take away the DAY Ethiopia should remember the fallen heroes and celebrate her leader that made it possible. EMEYE MENELIK. Adwa victory day TODAY.

Walk with your chin up Ethiopians for your ancestors don't want you to be ashamed of them for giving you free country and solid self identity. Draw strength from Adwa and build Ethiopia because she deserves it. And when you are angry at some stupid Ethiopian for betraying and insulting Ethiopia think of the Oromo, the Amara, the Sidama, the Tigre, the Wolayita, the Gurage, the Somali, the Gamo, .....Ethiopian heroes who paid the ultimate price to make you the unique black people of this earth before you call him/her with a deregatory racist name. Don't forget why black people and even some brown people admire Ethiopia and her tri-color-flag and Ras Teferi and sing and display that to the whole world to this day...and Menelik II is the MAN who made that possible at Ambalage and Mekele but most of all at ADWA.

And those of you who hate Ethiopia, please have manners. This is a special day to celebrate ADWA and MENELIK the Socond.

Dear Selam, Eritrea was a banda of Italy. They invade Ethiopia together with Italy. Otherwise, before the Adwa battle Eritrea was a part of Ethiopia. Eritreans were enjoying bndanet, they also prefer to be colonized than freedom. You are trying to say you were colonized by Italy and Ethiopia. We thought you were our brothers and sisters when we kicked out Italy from your soil 1935. Our grandfathers were not mistaken, but you guys are prefered slavery than to have respectful name of Ethiopian. A country never Colonized; and kicked colonial power more than twenty times. DRUMS OF MENELIK
By Marcus Bruce Christian

BEAT UPON THE DRUMS OF MENELIK

And tell black warriors to go out and win.
O Beat upon the drums of Menelik
O beat upon the drums of lion's skin
O let the giant drums be ever quick

In calling blackmen out to fight and win.
Take them to the highest mountain peak
Then let them thunder with a lion's roar
And the two million warriors these words speak:
"THE WHITE INVADER KNOCKS AT YOUR DOOR!"

Send out your war cry o'er each peak and vale
Cry out the story of your country's wrong,
Let every drum reverberate the tale
And in succession carry it along.

Black Drummers, scream defiance to the sky
As did Makonnen in Adowa's day!
O let the giant drums be ever quick
In calling black men out to fight and win.

Throb out, "This is our land and here we die
And thus with life defend it -- come what may!"
Black Drummers, scream defiance to the sky
As did Menelik in Adowa today!

Ras Mokennen was not from Harargue, but he was the Duke of Harar; and by the way it was Ras Mokennen who openly admitted that "Italians should have ruled us for another 5 or 10 years, and we would have seen more bridges, roads and school and hospital build for us"
If you have been in Harargue, you would see that most major buildings, all the major roads, hospitals and schools were built by the Italians soldiers; even the famous Mosque in Dire Dawa.

Muhe,
NO Kottus (Oromo) or Somali from Harargue ever fought against the Italians army. Get your fact straight. In fact they were with the Italians fighting against the Habesha because of what Menelik has done to them. They took their revenge against the habesha and when Haile came back, the first thing he did was he put all those Kottus who according to him had betrayed the country, in hot "Nora"

Once again if the Habesha want to celebrate this Adwa thing, fine .. please go ahead and it is one more reason for you guys to get drunk anyway. Enjoy your Tela and Tej
But restrain yourself from bringing all this BS history.

Adwa and its mountains are witness to the gallant deeds of the children of Ethiopia (the children of Africa). For the sake of their motherland Ethiopia, they fell together and remained for ever in its mountains and valleys. They were united in life and in death. All of them were there, at the great call. They came from the four corners of our country. They were Amharas, Oromos, Tigres, Afars, Guragues, Wollayitas etc. No body was absent!

Gashe Lekim,

What I think about what you wrote, you already know. It would be a waist of time for me to type them here. But I do thank you for not insulting him. The one thing I want to say, yes, Menelik was in the front lines, not only Ethiopian eye witnesses but Europeans who were there has testified to that. My own great grand father (his cousin) died in thick of battle, after which his men captured General Albertoni. As for Tigray suffering because of the war it is very true. Thats where the war was after all. But current TPLF revisionists trying to state that Ras Alula alone drove off the Italians when the rest were eating curte siga, is total rubbish. It is documented in many instances out of 150,000 Ethiopians at the battle of which roughly half were actual troops, there were three thousand under Ras Alula, and three thousand under Ras Mengesha. They did their heroic part, but to say they single handely defeated 7/8 thousand Europeans and some 20,000 of their hashkeris just doesn't add up.

Philly,

I don't talk to Eritreans. But today I break that rule. I don't have to google Bahta Hagos. He was a great man, and after his death the Italians even refused to have his body removed for days because of what he did to them when he was alive. But remember he was an Ethiopian, no Eritrea existed then.

Jigsaa,

Very good question my friend. His mother's name in Igegayehu Lemma Adiamo. I have heard some say she has a Konso root, others yet she was Oromo. But one thing I know, it all goes back, again, To the reign of Sahle Selassie. Who brought slavery in large scale to Shewa. Many thousands of people from the Nile gorge, as far away as what is today Uganda, were brought into Shewa. The middle men who brought them were usually Oromo warriors, Somalis, and others. His troops were already stretched controlling Shewa, which is very large. This "stench" as the then English visitor to Shewa, Major Harris mentioned was a very dark side of his rule. But these thousands of newcomers were not segregated and left in one side of town. They totally mixed with the entire Shewan people. That added to the other mixtures between Oromos, Amaras, and Guraghes that already existed. Hence, as Richard Greenfield once metioned in his book about Ethiopia, different colors of shape and sizes came to be in the same family. The example he gave was that of Ras Asrate Kassa (father to my shintam cousin Mulugeta Zenawomics, the only full blooded Amara in all of Shewa, kikiki) looked like a Ghanian, while his nephew Amha Abera Kassa looks like a European. Different colors, same family, that is Shewa.

Qorqoro,

Ayieee, menkwakuate becha. I already told you, talking about Menelik now won't do you any good. You should have done something about it then. As for the statue, who is stopping you. Walk right to it and start hammering. You will be toast, ahhh I d say in about five seconds. Millions are watching.

Menelik
BEFORE ADWA

Menelik was born in August 1844. His father Haile Menekot, was king of Shewa from 1847 to 1855. Haile Menekot died in 1855 after losing a battle to emperor Tewodros (Prouty, C. and Rosenfeld, E. 1982, 129). Menelik was set to be the next ruler of Shewa but was taken away by Tewodros to Magdala. In his place, Tewodros had made Ato Bezabeh governor of Shewa (Gabre-Sellassie, Z. 1975, 19).

Ten years later, in 1865, Menelik escaped Tewodros' imprisonment and, with the help of family and friends, became the ruler of Shewa. He would remain the ruler of Shewa for another 24 years before he became emperor upon Yohannes' death in 1889 (Pankhurst, R. 1998, 176).

Ato Bezabeh fled upon the return of Menelik to Shewa in 1865. Menelik was officially recognized king of Shewa in August of that year. In April 1868, when the British came to dethrone Tewodros in Magdala, Menelik sent an army to Magdala hoping to claim the imperial throne upon Tewodros' fall. Menelik had asked the British to help him in his plan, but the British did not really care who became the next emperor so they denied him of any assistance. On the last minute, Menelik changed his mind and had his army back off, making the excuse that he would not have his men do battle on Easter. After the British left Magdala, Wagshum Gobaze, the ruler of Amhara, Wag, and Lasta, took Magdala and proclaimed himself emperor. Menelik had lost his first chance at the imperial throne to Gobaze and will still have to wait until Yohannes' death to become emperor (Gabre-Sellassie, Z. 1975, 19-21).

Wagshum Gobaze, now calling himself Emperor Tekle Giyorgis II, remained emperor for only a short three years, from 1868 to 1871. When the British had stormed Magdala in 1868, they had done it with the cooperation of a certain Kassa Marcha of Tigray. After the British finished their campaign, they awarded Kassa Marcha for his cooperation by giving him a number of weapons. When the current emperor, Tekle Giyorgis, attacked Tigray because Kassa had refused to submit, Kassa was able to crush the imperial army because his troops, although outnumbered, were better equipped. Kassa went on to become the next emperor in 1872 with the name Yohannes IV.

During Yohannes' nearly two decade rule, Menelik was mostly faithful. Menelik would respond when Yohannes asked him to suppress a revolt and he respected territorial boundaries carved out for him by Yohannes. However, Menelik's ambition to become emperor was too great and was always looking for a way to dethrone Yohannes. In 1875 Menelik started communication with the khedive of Egypt hoping he could make them an alley. Through Egypt, Menelik hoped he could obtain access to the seacoast and a supply of firearms. Later that same year, the Egyptians tried to make Menelik part of their plot against Yohannes, but before real measures were taken, the Egyptian's plan failed by their own undoing (Gabre-Sellassie, Z. 1975, 57-59). In 1876, Menelik had his aspirations on the French. He wanted to open a trade route to Obock, a French-ruled seaport located in what is today Djibouti. Menelik sent a draft treaty to France and he made it know a substantial amount of land in Shewa would be available for a French settlement (Gabre-Sellassie, Z. 1975, 85-86). Nothing came out of this attempt either but Menelik's most daring move was still ahead of him.

While Yohannes was preoccupied with defending the country against the Egyptians, Menelik saw it as a perfect opportunity to expand his territory north. Menelik started in the summer of 1876 by invading Wallo. Early the following year, Menelik was in Begemdir. During this ordeal, Yohannes was camped at Adwa. It wasn't until March of 1877 that Yohannes finally left Adwa. Yohannes slowly advanced south and Menelik retreated back to Shewa. When Yohannes reached Shewa, Menelik was contemplating where to do battle with the emperor or to submit. Yohannes was willing not to fight as long as Menelik submitted. Finally Menelik submitted to Yohannes on 10 March 1878. Menelik promised to pay annual tribute, to cease trade routes to European ruled territories, and to be faithful to the emperor. In exchange, Menelik got to keep his land and was anointed by the emperor as king of Shewa (Gabre-Sellassie, Z. 1975, 89-93).

Upon emperor Yohannes' suggestion, Menelik married Taitu Betul. Her brothers were imprisoned with Menelik in Magdala during Tewodros' rule. The wedding took place in the Church of Medhane Alem in Ankober in the spring of 1883. Paul Henze describes her as being "bright, energetic, patriotic, a devout Christian and unusually well educated for her time." (2000, 151).

For much of the 1880s, Menelik's expansion campaigning towards the south greatly increased the size of Shewa. Eastern Gurage was concurred without much resistance where as the western side required heavy fighting measures. Heavy fighting was also necessary to concur Arsi. After defeating King Tekle Haymanot of Gojjam in 1882, Menelik was able to occupy Leqa Naqamté, Leqa Qellem, Jemma, the Gibé states, and Illubabor. Later on, Menelik "took control of Kulo and Konta in 1889. He began the occupation of Kambata in 1890, occupied Ogaden, Balé and Sidamo in 1891, and gained control of Gofa and conquered Walamo . . . in 1894, and took Kafa three years later." One of his last great concur as king of Shewa was Harar. Paul Henze believes "Menelik consciously extended his borders to include all the territories that had formed part of the medieval empire of Amde Tseyon." (2000, 152).

When the Egyptians evacuated Harar in May 1885, it was taken over by Emir Abdullahi. He was a Muslim fundamentalist who persecuted Christians. When Italian Christians were killed in Ogaden in April 1886, supposedly ordered by the emir, Menelik saw it as an excuse to interpose. Before Menelik attacked, he offered the emir autonomy. The emir refused the offer and opened attack on Menelik on 6 January 1887. Menelik's troops were far superior and the emir was defeated. The emir fled to the Somali desert to hide. Menelik appointed his cousin Makonnen as governor of Hara. The city would go on to become an economic center allowing Shewa a better access to the French Gulf of Tadjoura (Marcus, H. 2002, 83-4).

Yohannes was unexpectedly killed at the Battle of Matamma on 9 March 1889. The heir apparent was Yohannes' son, Megesha, but neither he or any one else could match Menelik's power. Menelik quickly began touring north receiving submission from local officials. Shortly afterwards, Menelik began negotiating with the Italians because he wanted them to officially recognize him as emperor of Ethiopia. On 2 May 1889, the Italians and Menelik signed the infamous Treaty of Wichale (Marcus, H. 2002, 87-9). There were two versions made; the Amharic version gave Menelik the choice of "using Italy's good offices for contacts with other countries. The Italian version obligated Menelik to make all such contacts through Italy, thus making Ethiopian an Italian protectorate." (Henze, P. 2000, 161). When Menelik II discovered the misunderstanding, he immediately wrote to Britain's Queen Victoria, to the ruler of Germany, and to the president of France insisting that Ethiopia was still an independent nation. In 1893, Menelik II denounced the treaty and by 1895 Ethiopia and Italy were at war. On March 1896 Menelik's troops crushed the Italian army at Adwa, Ethiopia. Later, Italy did recognize Ethiopia as an independent nation.

Menelik
AFTER ADWA

After the Battle of Adwa, Menelik refocused his attention to expanding Ethiopia's territory further south and west. One of the first major acquirement was of Kefa in 1897. One major obstacle was the British; they were in control of regions that are today Kenya and Sudan. The threat was not going to hinder Menelik; he continued expanding into territories the Europeans believed were theirs. As well as expanding Ethiopia's frontiers, Menelik did much to modernize the country. During his reign, electricity, the telephone, and indoor plumping where introduced. Advancements in health and education were made and Ethiopia become a member of the International Postal Union. His most outreaching achievement was the construction of the railway from Addis Abeba to Djibouti. It was instrumental in connecting the country to the outside world as well as increasing trade commerce (Marcus, H. 2002, 104-8).

In 1906, Menelik had a stroke related to a disease which would eventually take his life. In 1907 he institutionalized a ministerial system to the government. The ministry would later become vital when Menelik fell seriously ill. In May 1909, Menelik named his grandson, Iyasu, his successor. Because Iyasu was a minor at the time, Ras Tasamma Nadaw was named regent. However, the most powerful person in Ethiopia at the time was Taytu, Menelik's wife. Her reign was short-lived for she had far more opponents than supporters. Her opponents, includeing the regent, used the imperial army, the church, and other political means to bring Taytu down. In 1910, Taytu was forced out of power. She fled to Saint Maryam at Entotto, where she retired until her death (Zewde, B. 2001, 111-120).

Iyasu took over power in 1911 when regent Ras Tasamma Nadew passed away. Thus began the short reign of Iyasu, which ended in 1916. Menelik died in December of 1913 and the country fell into a period of uncertainty. The next true leader, Haile Selassie, was not crowned until 1930.

Like the Kunamas in Tigray, they have also the right to be one of the peoples of Tigray region.

WE are all Ethiopian no matter what Ethnic group. Please don't get mad at me cause I am just saying this. I am of mixed ethnicities myself, 50% Amhara 25% Oromo 25% Gurage 100% ETHIOPIAN! Madam Arogit,
Despite your latest best attempt to sound like a concerned Ethiopian, those of us who knew you from day one never failed for your tricks. I am just wondering why anyone with a Turkish blood is inherently a hater of Ethiopia. Well, it is true Ethiopia was the place they couldn't conquer despite Gragn Mohammad's relative success since we are inherently, quite to the contrary, invader busters and killers. That was what our ancestors done to your rabid dog ancestors, the devil riders and force of destruction. Apparently they had to kill every living Ethiopian, which was impossible, to import their own way of life in our land, but so far nobody succeeded, and No one will.

When that retarded Turkish Prime minister visited Ethiopia, he went to our destitute for the sheer purpose of mockery in the name of humility, When the Turkish origin and inherently Ethiopian hater retard Dr Muhammad Shamsaddin Megalommatis chosen to study history, it was for the sole purpose of avenging his forefathers defeat in the land of the warriors. He has been engaged in falsifying existing facts and fabricating his own to accomplish exactly what his ancestors failed to do which is disintegrating Ethiopia. And, we have you here, the little Turk mixed Somali, a confused Arogit, who is suffering from multiple personality disorder and has been reappearing to attack what is Ethiopia in the name of the "oppressed" people of the East. Madam Retard, you can keep pretending but we are very much aware of your intention as you are the voice of the sadist and humiliated Turks. You represent no one Ethiopian but that retarded Megalomaniac historian and your forefather Gragn Mohammad. You have been wasting your expiring time and energy on something you are inherently deficient, you can hate but can not destroy Ethiopia.

You seem to borderline that the Shawan kingdom was a separate entity during the Gonder reign. Sorry to burst your bubbles but in fact they were under the Gonder kingdom the hole time with little or no recognition given to them until Menelik was put under house arrest by Tewodros.

2. You stated and a quote "the most keffafay ethnic pest any country had to deal with" just who are you referring to?
See I don't have any problem being ruled by Tigrians so long as the do a good job of it and for most part they are doing amazingly much much better job than the Derge as far as I can see. So what is your point?

It seems to me you don't like Tigarains based on your statement.

Happy anniversary to all Africans in general and my Ethiopian sisters/brothers in particular!

Free,Babur-Hawareysa and Shewarega thank you for your answers to our Wozeiro, whose consistency has been questionable and tends to fickle time to time.

Wozeiro, I forgive you for this one b/c since your incredible comeback you have stayed behind Ethiopia and defended her people while at the same time cursing her enemies and putting spiteful words about them(rightfully so and also without lieing and twisting facts unlike woyane supporters). I know too little about our great Emperor Emiyee Menelik II therefor I can't go in detail on what his contributes to Emayee Ethiopia were(which BTW is very sad and which is one of the things I've promised myself to improve myself into)but to remind you of something; didn't you say "...fact that he has created what Ethiopia is today"? So how can you expect him to achieve more than that of he did during his 23 years of reign? He just united the rest of Ethiopia that Emperor Tewodros II and Emperor Yohannes dreamed of, he fought and crushed a European colonial power and he was on his way of modernizing Ethiopia i.e. "Menelik II founded the first modern bank in Ethiopia, the Bank of Abyssinia, introduced the first modern postal system, signed the agreement and initiated work that established the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway with the French, introduced electricity to Addis Ababa, as well as the telephone, telegraph, the motor car as well as modern plumbing." so what more do you ask of this great man? If you didn't realize he was a human being just like you.

I would be taken by a big surprise if Anbetaw lekim never took this chance to insult a great Emperor whom even westerns gave so much respect to. What a shame you are to our country, you scum of earth! We all despise you, you degenerated, rotten and degraded scumbag!!! I see ADWA one big burden to Ethiopia.

What talk about Italy did this or did that to US! but the Italian people never did any WRONG TO US.

Even if they did it would not in our National interest to remind them repeatedly what they did to US.

The USA bombed Japan (Hiroshima )and reduced them to ground but the Japans didn’t sit and blame the American instead they form friendship and LOOK what the Japans achieved GETTING HELP from their old ENEMY.

Talking about Adwa in 1896. I don’t know who the Italian king or leader at that TIME but only the govt. of Italy at that time to be blame no body else IN 1934 the Fascist govt. only to be blamed no body else.

For crime of Mengistu the whole Ethiopians can’t be blamed therefore in the same logic we should forgive the Italian people for almost for the last 100 years blaming them the crime they didn’t commit.

My another point is Emperor Menelik didn’t liberate the whole Ethiopia. They might be liberating the Amhrara and ascending them to power. But Emperor Menelik is a very, very bed news to the rest of Ethiopian namely the Oromians and the Eritreans.

As every one knows Emperor Menelik, seek help form region of Ethiopia, the oromia and the Eritreans where part of his ARMY.

You might think where the Eritrean come from since they are under Italian colony. The Answer is very simple Emperor Menelik at that time have big GUNS. “MADFA” but he have no qualified army to fire those big “Madfa” hence the Eritrean connection.

At that time, the Italian have standing armies that include Eritrean army. Since Eritrea is the Italian colony, the Italian trained those Eritrean army the use of all war machine including “Madfa”

At that time those Eritreans who doesn’t want to be colonized by any one want to fight for their freedom.. Now Ethiopian fighting with their colonizer it is a natural fact that the Eritrean army or banda meaning army join the Ethiopian side and fight back…

Those bandas who run way from Italian army joined Emperor Menelik army… At that time Menelik was so happy to get those trained army so that his Madfa can be fire Now. The sad thing is once the Italian army defeated… Menelik cut every Eritrean escapee one hand and breast. The reason given at that time was they were sale out! But the truth was Emperor Menelik doesn’t want them to use their hand to fire his Madfa at HIM.. IN SHORT, HE WAS protecting his POWER BASE.

Some of you think I am making up story here but the fact is those prisoner are sale out are not holding WATER.. not then or NOW! THE fact is Emperor Menelik did n’t passed Eritrea border therefore where did he got all those prisoner… in old day you only tell the winner side by killing your enemy with hand to hand fight… the lose only found after every one died or killed otherwise how they going to stop the war.. they don’t have much of modern technology where you can fire from far… you have to do hand to hand battle…

The only logic is those so called banda joined the Emperor Menelik side before the war started or before finished and fight back with him and help him to WIN at the end they pay for it.

Now let come back to the oromo people and the Emperor menelik. The same story here… the Oromo army joined the Emperor Menelik side and die in fight for Ethiopian freedom. What did the oromo people get in the end? Slavery.

Now the question is NOT did the oromo joined and help Menelik to win the WAR? The question is did Menelik double crossed the oromo? That is the question the answer is YES! Therefore if he did it to the oromo people where his ethnic background come from what he will stop him from doing it to the Eritrean people.

Now let me make this understandable to those Amhara people who think the Adwa win everyone victory.. I have the News for YOU…

DID YOU FEEL MAY 1991. VICTORY OVER MANGISTU AND MELES ascending to power Victory to YOU!

If the answer is NO! IN FACT IF YOU PREFERS Mangistu rule over Meles then what do you think Adwa victory is the same to every ethnic group in Ethiopia.

Adwa victory day should be given to Local state but it should not be Federal holiday. Some state Might not get the benefit of celebrating their Victory day stolen by their own KING. THIS LIKE SAYING AMHARA celebrating the Meles TPLF victory day!

However, I want to tell you that you are lying when you claim Ethiopia is under occupation currently. Get this straight: There is no Ethiopia without Tigres and Tigray. There will be only Amhara, Oromia, etc... if there is no Tigray in Ethiopia. Ethiopia without Tigray and the beautiful and brave people of Tigray is no more. If you love Ethiopia, please be content that the Tigres are now in the driver's seat taking care of their country very well. Yes I agree there should be a broad mass based government that is not ethno centric. However, until that day, Ethiopia is safe in the hands of the Tigres. Only Ethiopia's enemies are having a nightmare when the warrior Tigres run things in Ethiopia. And please do not forget that at least one of them, Yohannes, gave his head for his country Ethiopia.

I agree that Minilik's punishment of the bandas from erithrea may be labeled cruel and unusual. But even to this day, in many civilized countries, treason is punishable by death. And please don't continue the lie that people in erithrea region are better technically equiped. They are no better than the rest of the Ethiopians. Look, that same false claim lead you to go away from a great country. But look at where you guys are. I wish you relealize this and fight your way back to the union instead of dying of envy, speacially with the success of the Tigres in running a much better country.

The mad dog of unknown nationality Woyzero Arogit and that Zitetam old Banda Lekim are back with their fatigued subject that is trashing the mammoth achievement of Menelik…

Dear Admin please let that Zitetam lekim and Kebatari arogit read this piece of writing By Donald N. Levine

The Battle of Adwa as a "Historic" Event
By Donald N. Levine
There are three reasons why we commonly refer to some happening as a historic event: either it occurs for the first time; it has significant consequences; or it is symbolically important. As a first time event, Emperor Menelik's cession of the Bogos highlands to Italy in 1889 has been described as historic, as the first time that an Ethiopian ruler ever voluntarily ceded territory to a foreign power. In the same vein, Abebe Bikila's victory in the marathon race in the 1960 Olympics at Rome was historic, as the first time that an Ethiopian won a gold medal.
We also designate events as historic when their consequences significantly alter the shape of subsequent history. The conversion of King Ezanas to Christianity in the middle of the fourth century was historic in this sense because it redirected Ethiopia's entire cultural development. Similarly, the protection given to disciples of the Prophet Mohammed by the Ethiopian king in the seventh century was a historic event. It led Mohammed to advise his followers to spare Ethiopia from the jihad of Islamic expansion that took place soon after. Likewise, the killing of Emperor Yohannes IV by Sudanese Mahdists in 1889 was historic because it opened the way to the ascendancy of an emperor from Shoa. Even when events have no significant direct consequences, we tend to call them historic when they symbolize important national or universal human ideals. The suicide of Emperor Tewodros II had little political consequence, his rule was over, whether or not he was captured alive by the British but it came to symbolize a sentiment of preferring death over demeaning captivity.
The speech of Emperor Haile Selassie to the League of Nations in 1937 is often called a historic address, even though it did nothing to change the course of history, because it came to symbolize the moral weakness of Western democracies in the face of fascist expansionism and the need for a stronger world organization empowered to provide collective security. The Battle of Adwa in 1896 qualifies as an historic event in all three senses of the term. As a historic first, it represented the first time since the beginning of European imperial expansion that a non-white nation had defeated a European power. The Battle of Adwa in 1896 also had two fateful consequences the preservation of Ethiopia's independence from Italian colonization, and the confirmation of Italy's control over the part of the country Italy had named Eritrea in 1890. Both consequences had repercussions throughout the twentieth century. Italy experienced her defeat at Adwa as intensely humiliating, and that humiliation became a national trauma which demagogic leaders strove to avenge. It also played no little part in motivating Italy's revanchist adventure in 1935. On the other hand, Italy's continued occupation of Eritrea gave her a convenient springboard from which to launch that invasion. A generation later, tensions stemming from the protracted division of historic Ethiopia into two parts one under European governance, one under the Ethiopian Crown culminated in a long civil war, and the eventual secession of Eritrea as an independent state in 1993. In addition to these actual historic consequences, the Battle of Adwa was historic because it acquired symbolic significance of many kinds. In some instances this symbolism itself came to exert a certain influence on the course of events.
Adwa's Symbolism in Other Countries In Europe, the short-term symbolic significance of the Ethiopian defeat of Italy in 1896 was that it served to initiate a process of rethinking the Europeans' image of Africa and Africans. During the nineteenth century Africa had come to be viewed in increasingly pejorative terms, as a continent of people so primitive they were fit only for European rule. Ethiopia did not escape such swipes. British officers called Ethiopia a nation of savages and Italian officials described it as a nation of primitive tribesmen led by a barbarian. The British Foreign Office supported the provocative move of ceding Zula to Italy, expecting that Yohannes would protest by attacking them and then easily be punished for imagining that Ethiopians were equal to white men. Kaiser Wilhelm responded to Emperor Menelik's announcement of his accession to the throne with insulting language. The stunning victory at Adwa required Europeans to take Ethiopia and Africa more seriously. It not only initiated a decade of negotiations with European powers in which nine border treaties were signed, it made Europeans begin to reconsider their prejudices against Africans. It came to symbolize a rising awareness among Europeans of African political resources and yearnings and an increasing recognition of indigenous African cultural accomplishments.
In Japan, Ethiopia became appreciated as the first non-Caucasian power to defeat Europeans, an achievement the Japanese were to duplicate in warfare against Russia in 1904. This appreciation led to a sense of affinity that bore fruit for decades thereafter. Ethiopian intellectuals looked to Japan as a model for modernizing their ancient monarchy; the Meiji Constitution served as a model for the Ethiopian Constitution of 1931. When Italy invaded Ethiopia again in the mid-thirties, many Japanese citizens (if not the regime formally) expressed solidarity with Ethiopians, sending shipments of many thousands of swords to help Ethiopians in their plight. In Africa, the Battle of Adwa inspired other kinds of symbolism. For a number of colonized Africans, the Ethiopian victory at Adwa symbolized the possibility of future emancipation. Black South Africans of the Ethiopian Church came to identify with the Christian kingdom in the Horn, a connection that led South African leader James Dwane to write Menelik for help in caring for the Christian communities of Egypt and Sudan. The victory at Adwa made Ethiopia visible as a beacon of African independence, a position that inspired figures like Nnamdi Azikiwe in Nigeria, Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana, and Jomo Kenyatta in Kenya in the early years of the African independence movement, as well as leaders in the West Indies like George Padmore and Marcus Garvey from Jamaica. Adwa as a Symbol of Ethiopia's Tradition of Independence Within Ethiopia itself, Adwa symbolized many things, some of which had positive consequences for her development while others did not. Internally, as abroad, it symbolized Ethiopia's proud commitment to freedom from foreign domination. Of the many emblems of Ethiopia's historic independence, Adwa is perhaps the most visible and the most dramatic. The spirit of Ethiopians' defiant protection of their land from outsiders manifests itself in many forms. There is the apocryphal story of Emperor Tewodros, who is said to have ordered the boots of some visitors washed before they embarked on a ship back to Europe, saying: "Far more precious than jewels is a single drop of Ethiopian soil." There was the refrain I used to hear young braves chant at festive times, jabbing dula (stick) up and down as they danced and sang: Min alle, Teqel min alle? Ageren le sew, ageren le sew, alsetim alle! (What did Teqel [Haile Selassie's horse name] say? I won't give my country to foreigners, he said.)
With respect to Menelik's reputation, it partly overcame the resentments he had stirred up by ceding Bogos to Italy in exchange for help against his competitors in Tigray. As a historic assertion of Ethiopia's independence, Adwa also reverberated with memories of Ethiopia's experience as a long-lived independent polity. Its symbolism thereby encompassed a layer of meaning that alluded to the historic depth of the Ethiopian nation. It revived memories of earlier achievements and yearnings. At the same time, Adwa may have served to give Ethiopians a false sense of confidence about their position in the modern world. In showing themselves and the world that they could defeat a European invader with their own resources, the 1896 campaign may have led them to think that their traditional resources could be adequate in an era in which war would be waged with tanks and airplanes. It gave encouragement to isolationist and conservative strains that were deeply rooted in Ethiopian culture, strengthening the hand of those who would strive to keep Ethiopia from adopting techniques imported from the modern West"resistances with which both Menelik and Ras Teferi/Haile Selassie would have to contend.
Adwa as a Symbol of Multi-ethnic Cooperation The symbolism of multi-ethnic collaboration evoked by the Battle of Adwa has been less visible than its role in symbolizing Ethiopia's tradition of independence. Yet in some ways the former was the most remarkable and meaningful aspect of the entire episode. Although members of different ethnic, religious, and regional groups had been interacting regularly in Ethiopia for more than 2,000 years"through trading, intermarriage, common ritual observances, pilgrimages, and political competition"from the perspective of Ethiopian history, Adwa offers the most dramatic instance of multi-ethnic collaboration before the 20th century. This is because it gave expression to a great outpouring of national patriotism, foreshadowing the great patriotic struggles of 1935-41. Even from the perspective of modern world history, Adwa represented a relatively rare struggle for national independence waged by a coalition of diverse ethnic groups.
Twenty-five years earlier, Adwa had been the scene of a protracted battle between Dejazmatch Kasa, who would become Emperor Yohannes IV, and the reigning emperor, Tekle Giorgis II, formerly Wag Shum Gobeze. What the 1871 Battle of Adwa symbolized was the age-old struggle among different regional and ethnic groups for dominance. Yohannes, like Tewodros II before him, came to the throne determined to reunify the empire, which had been fragmented following the invasion of Ahmed Gragn and subsequent divisive developments. Although Yohannes did not live to see it, the 1896 Battle of Adwa was a tribute to his vision and to the thoughtfulness and determination with which he sought to unify Ethiopia while respecting the local jurisdiction of regional kings and lords so long as they remained faithful to the national crown. Those who would deny Ethiopia's long existence as a multi-ethnic society must be embarrassed by the facts of the Adwa experience.
If the empire consisted of nothing but a congeries of separate tribal and regional groups, how then account for the courageous collaboration of 100,000 troops from dozens of ethnic groups from all parts of the country? How then explain the spirited national patriotism of such diverse leaders as Ras Alula, Ras Mengesha, and Ras Sibhat of Tigray, Dejazmatch Bahta of Akale Guzae, Wag Shum Guangul of Lasta, Ras Mikael of Wollo, Negus Tekle-Haymanot of Gojjam, Ras Gobena and Dejazmatch Balcha of the Mecha Oromo, Ras Wole of the Yejju Oromo, Fitawrari Tekle of Wollega, Ras Mekonnen of Harer, as well as Ras Gebeyehu (who died fighting at Adwa) and Ras Abate of Shoa? Of course, deeply rooted antagonisms and persistent rivalries among different factions beset Ethiopia throughout the 19th century. And yet, as historian Sven Rubenson has written, "at the crucial moment, Menelik commanded the loyalty of every important chief in the country." The Battle of Adwa became and remains the most outstanding symbols of what, a half-century later, a British colonel would describe as the "mysterious magnetism" that holds Ethiopia together.
Donald N. Levine, Ph.D.,

"What really saved Ethiopia from falling under colonial rule was the determination with which this heritage of consciousness, international recognition, and political/diplomatic skill was developed to meet the new challenges."
- S. Rubenson, The Survival of Ethiopian Independence (1978)

I think Ethiopian history is not well written. I thought it needs revission. The great African commander, Ras Alula was the master mind of the victory of Adwa, but people from Shewa usually attached this history with Minilk. That is funny. there were many Oromo worries that contributed to the victory. No one showed an interest to talk about them.

Ethiopian history is highly baised.

Mr. Free
Why people called Tedros as 'and lenatu'. Don't you think he didn't have a father? or was that because his father is from Tigray?

The same is true for Minilks mother, i think she is Oromo so people don't want to mention her name.

Shame on Ethiopian historians!!

'ADWA [Visitor]',
the 1991 victory of the EPRDF against the previous regime is the same us the 1974 popular revolution against the monarchy. Like the EPRDF's propaganda, the previous regime also was declaring that Ethiopians are freed from 1000s years of darkness. And these two are also similar with the countless power transfers that took place in Ethiopia's 3000+ years of continous proud history. It is an internal matter that affects part of the population either positively or not so positively. Therefore, some celebrate the EPRDF victory over a previous regime as their own victory while others ignore it or hate the victory because it might have affected them negatively.

Don't try to relate our own internal matters of power transfer to being rediculed and enslaved by outsiders. That never touched us Ethiopians as we are willing to pay all we have to keep our heads up at all times. I understand that we are in an enviable situation as we are the ONLY in the whole world (excluding the colonialists) who remain free and proud.

We Ethiopians do not equate our internal rivalries and loses and gains with an external threat. When an external threat looms in the horizon, the world has seen what we did in 1896 as well as 1998. In 1998, although it was miscalculated by enemies like the Asmara regime and its Arab masters that Amaras and Oromos are angry about EPRDF's victory and will not stand with their brothers, the result was astonishing and gut wrenching to the enemies of Ethiopia. It was like this and with the help of our God that we remain victorious over the centuries.

I don't have to be a student of history to learn the shameful and ugly history of lies, deceit,
betrayal and revenge which are the hallmarks of the Ankober ans Dedebit whore houses.
Ethiopian history is laden with the savage cruelity of conquest and exloitation, genocide and ethnic cleansing, murderous adventure and rape, deportation, dimantiling and destruction and even the inhumane slave trade.
The Ankober and Dedebit atrocities are nothing to be proud of.History will bethe judge of it.
Regarding your war hero Winston Churchil, I felt sorry for you. I don't have to go as far as the UK for I have my own heroes to be proud of.I was fortunate enough to stand side by side with hundreds of thousands of Eritrean heros and heroines in the Sahel mountains and Barka plains during the Eritrean stuggle for independence.
You don't even have even the gut to name the gallant heroes like Zerai Deres,Abraham Deboch,Aman Andom,Lorenzo Tazaz.......come to think of I can feel your pain.....these heroes are Eritreans after all.....ha...ha...ha

I just rather leave you with your inferiority by wishing you a speedy recovery. But, I like for you to know that, Some times Silence by it self is wisdom. Then, if you don't know, just zip up. Eritrea was never part of the cursed empire.
Eritrea was colonized by the TURKS,EGYPTIANS,ITALIANS,BRITISH and ETHIOPIA....

Minilik had nothing to do with adwa victory, I claim this victory as Tayitu's victory and the rest of hero Oromos and Amharas. Minilik is univited guest who invited himself and claimed himself as king. There are some role he played at south than north. He had alot of garbage story and mistake what he did in Ethiopia. The victory is not blongs to him but his wife's.

At the time Eritrea had some comfortable ports like Adolis to transfer slave from there and it is easy place to occupy for Europeans. At the end Ethiopians freed themselve plus Eritreans at all. This gave hope for the rest of Africa that white colonizers are beatable on their game. The battle of Adwa gave the next generation of Africans what black Africa is capable of if there is a will and determination.
On this historic day. Let's give credit where due an move on..

ADWA,

No wonder, this is what one expects from 'dikala' eritreans. We are not ashamed of and scared of telling them what we did them. Had it not been for our foregeneration, we would have had lots of dikalas, with all the identity crises. And that is what our great grand fathers hated and as a result sacrificed their life to save us. We are poor in terms of money, but richly proud of ourself wherever we are.

Which part of my ethnicity is hard for you to digest. Something is bothering you because I am not an Habesha but proud to be an Ethiopia and like I said it before You don't have to be an habesha to be an Ethiopian. That silly equation Habesha=Ethiopian has long been flushed in the toilet with Haile

Sharamara,
If I was you I would not mention the name of Lorenzo Tazaz with those with illustrious people like Zerai Deres, Abraham Deboch,Aman Andom. If my memory serves me good it was the one who cheated that famous referendum to bring Erythrea in the fold of Ethiopian Empire during Haile. Without this cheating Erythrea would have been a republic a very long time ago and spare the rest of Ethiopia so many loses

Shewarega, I gave up my bad habit of insulting beluga whales but the key issue as you pointed out long time ago is that the good emperor “crossed forty rivers” and took “forty days” to get to the battle of Adwa. Even the Italians will tell you that their defenses didn’t take forty days to completely collapse. So my friend, where was your great uncle when Alula’s soldiers were dropping dead like flies? My friend, like the rest of them you are quick in writing history in your name but you are very short in the details. Anyway, the victory at Adwa belongs to those who died like flies defending their country and the rest can claim the glory but history is what it is. Menelik, Free and Elcad you can all bite me. I have no time for tribal retards. AGAM, I never said Menelik didn’t have a role at Adwa. All I said was that his only role was claiming victory to a war that he wasn’t there to win or lose and selling out the gains from the victory of Adwa to the Italians. You and I will disagree on this but it proves that we don’t all think the same and I respect your views.

Very well, next time I pass bye Gondar castle I will check the records and let you know.

Who am I talking about, when I say Keffafay ethnic pests. The reply, the Eritrean Legese Zenawi, the Eritrean Wolde Selassie Nega(may he rot in hell, may unborn generations spit on his vile and wicked name), the Eritrean Berebekkt Simeon, and all of their types. Scroll down to what i wrote earlier, I said removed to the other side of Mereb not Tekeze, gabito. Don't mix apple and oranges.

Woldeyesus,

"lying" is a strong word to use. You preaching to me about Atse Yohanes (may God rest his noble soul), sends chill down my spine. For me he is the most honorable leader Ethiopia ever had. Plus he did not park his army on our doorstep, wipe our name off the face of the Earth, cut our province into pieces, and insulted us day and night. That honor is given to our current rulers. Atse Yohanes had only one son, and he honored Shewa in giving him to us in marriage. Not to Gondar, not to wollo, Wellega, Gojjam, or anyone else. He gave him to us. That is the simple fact. And I humbly ask you to refrain putting words into my mouth. I have never spoken ill of Tigray or anyone from there. Thats where it all began. I am just speaking to those who stand on the head of the Ethiopian people, gorge themselves with hundreds of millions of dollars of loot, and talk day and night how they will defend Eritrea. Those, who profess to admister the nation, they despise to the inner side of their bones. Those who threaten to destroy the nation, if they are not allowed to stay in power indefinately and keep on looting. "Hege mengestu ke laele, ethiopia yelechim beyalehu." Not Ras Ali, or Tewodros, or Tekle Giyorgis, Not Yohanes, or Menelik, or Zewditu, Haile Selassie, Aman, Teferi, name who ever you want including that maglo maniac murderer Mengistu, will ever say somthing like that.

'Ethiopia under Emperor Menelik II decimated the invading Italian army in the Battle of Adwa, which made it a symbol of independence and pride for all black people around the World.'

The victory over italia showed us not only the braveness of Ethiopians but we were well organized for hundreds of years if not thousand as compared to the multitudes of kindomes in Africa which couldnt survived the man slaughter machin from fashist eruopian envadors. The colonizers who colnoized the whole Africa except us kept us away from the sea. But the colonizers kept us away from the sea doesnt mean the water body is not our us. That is why we have to negotiate with Eritreans. I worship Minilik for his love of his country and his great lidership not only in defending his country but also for the introduciton of civilization in to Ethiopia. We still use the technology and development introduced by his goverment. And it was 100 years ago. but now the time of Minilik is over. That time most of things done by force or war. Now the time is changed. And in this regard the majority of EThipia seamed to understand that the time is changed. Ppl in Ethiopia is focused in developoment, utilizing the potential the country has, school, road construciton, factory buildking, peacfully cooexisting with neighbours, and most of all peace.

Our victory of Adwa will be repeated in the vicotry of poverity. Long live the victory of Adwa.

Adwas Call for all Ethiopians!

Dear Ethipiasn, during the derg period we know what happened. Derg has done a horrible damage to Ethiopia. And derg's peroid was a good opportunity to attack Ethiopia. In the disguised of abolishing the fashist derg, the enemy of Ethiopia was attacking Ethiopia dircetlly.

Now also eritreans callecting money in the name of the border problem with Ethiopia and somalians contributing money in the name of the precense of Ethio soldires in Somalia. Bothe groups they know very well the money goes for some terrorist action or to wage war against Ethiopia. As a witness three somalians were under arest organising , collecting, and sending money direct for terror directed to civilian ethiopians all over the world.

In short, all Ethiopians who want to devend our country must start to contribute fo our government. I dont think our poletical difference means nothing when our country is under attack in this cruel way. I dont say this much percent. Lets help Ethiopia by sending money to our soldires, to our defence, to our goverment. Compare the three states: somalia, eritrea and ethiopia. And tell me if millions of eritreans abroad contribute to their goverment why not we. Dont tell me their govenrment better than ours. Tell me if hundred of thousands of Somalia sending for the islamist group why not we.

By sending money to our government we do the change of herat we se in the begining of our new millenium much better. our defence will better. our soldirs will live better.

Long live Ethipia.

Adwa victory belongs to Oromos, Amaras, Tigrayans, Gurages, all Ethiopians. many war heroes like Ras Alula Aba Nega, Dej Bulcha Aba Nefso, etc part of our proud history, all that achieved under strong and smart leadership united against enemy, that leader was Menelik. though he was not equipped with western education but smart, he knew his limits when to stop or advance, strategist and calculative, he waited long enough for power. imagine over a century ago when many of the world and Africa doomed under colony of mighty Europeans, we were free, our boundaries were made by us not colonial boundaries. i can understand some people anger, i think many of the problems we are having today caused by Haile Selassie, he did not took power clean to start with and left power in the most disgraced way, what did he do? apart from showing off his uniform around the world, sixty years in power direct and in the shadow, things happen for a reason.

[why people called Tedros as 'and lenatu' don't you think he didn't have a father? or was that because his father was from Tigary?
The same is true for Minilik mother, i think she is Oromo so people don't want to mention her name] Somo[visitor]

I agree with you. that was the whole point claiming to be pure blood of solomonic bollocks, the fact is in those days children were born all over, men and women were free to have as many kids with anyone, maids, servants, etc. neither Menelik nor Selassie were serious religious, Menelik used to hide from the church and go to cinema(seytan bet), Selassie was educated by catholic europeans, etc.

On this day I Applaud the win over the arrogant and fascist Italy, although at the same time I also want to blame that same day as the lose of our only border to the rest of the world, the red sea!

it’s hardly possible to modify history. In fact it’s true that we gain our pride and identity by loosing one of the defining moments of the 21stc Ethiopian history, from an exterior in to an interior or landlocked country.

But brothers and sisters we didn’t take our lessons, we didn’t do our home work, nether did we study our history; although the late emperor Menelik II made a mistake by the famous reason the ‘famous Ethiopian famine’ which subsequently led to ‘mereb mlash’ that HE didn’t realize we are losing the red sea, the now Meles also did same mistake (2005)

I still wonder why the 1896 New York Times didn’t report as ‘Ethiopia lost its only coast’ rather than ‘Italy’s terrible defeat’ …. Or any thing for that matter.

I believe it doesn’t have to take Eretria to bring our red sea back! We need the sea and only the sea not Eretria

Cheers!

Ironic:

Although I'm late to be part of this article's news, I'm surprised to read some of the Woyane cockroaches and cheerleaders attempt to take credit of the war against Italy, out of no where.

We're talking the same Adwa where Emperor Meles Abyssinia, came from. The new abysinian who threatened to make Tigrai, along with Adwa, a graveyard of Amharas, the same people who faught Italia in his backyard to liberate his ancestors from colonial yokes. The same Woyane banda of the 21st century, who considered Ethiopian flag as a simple rug.. the same traitor who drapped the Ethiopian flag on the back of a donkey in last week's celebration of Dedebit in Shire.

This victory against Italians was victory of Nationalist Ethiopians against colonizers, despite the continued Eritrean nationalist fight against fascistic Italians but the betrayals of feudal Tigraians against nationalist Eritreans.

We hear a lot of fabrications and blackmailings against Eritreans' resolve against fascistic Italians. While there is no denial of Ethiopians' nationalism against Italians, the history of Eritrean nationalist fighters and nationalists had been deliberately distorted and painted. Eritrean continued fight against fascistic Italians had been sabotaged by Tigrians looters and including Ras Alula and the likes. The inability of Eritrean nationalists to fight off the Italians had been worsened by the continued looting by Tigraian bandits.

It's amazing to learn how the opportunist Tigraians try to take credit of this war, how it was fought when we know they sabotaged Eritrean resolve to fight off Italians.

To make matters worst, they attempted to show that they were summarily nationalist Ethiopians while Eritreans were bandas, forgetting the battle fought in Eritrea against Italian colonizers.

Forceful conscription of Eritreans by fascistic Italians was considered by Woyane cockroaches as voluntary siding with Italians, just to paint themselves "Ethiopians" when we know these Tigrai bandits never considered to be part of Ethiopia but "greater Tigrai" nationals.

The 21st Century banda Tigraians can hide themselves as Ethiopians but will never hide the truth of their role in destabilizing and looting Eritrea, not once , but twice. And now, worst, they are serving the American fascists as open bandas and voluntary conscripts just for looting.

The most important thing to learn anbout invasion, or the struggle for national independence comes from people of origin, whether in Eritrea, Ethiopia, or Somalia.. Occupation is temporary. Looting is temprorary. Resolve of national independence against invasion is the most basic quest of of determined people for identity. That's why it took us thirty years of sacrifice and the subsquent determination for territorial integrity against black invaders from the south with the help of White pigs. That's why we, as Africans are determined to be self supporting and respecting citizens, economically, so no threat from White pigs would threaten the very existent of the very nature of our own, away from dependency.

The struggle for independence and sovereignity against invasion continues.

Lonf Live the people's struggle against occupation and invasion!

ZXAmiche,

Amiche, the 18th century Italian made wasteful machine, i am heart broken reading your sometimes tearful, other times blemish and an other times deceitful little shabean/woyane style commentary. See Amiche, it would be ridiculously stupid if a hateful Hitler's foot solider accuses a helpless Polish Jew a Nazi, the same is true when you, the Shabean retard, calls proud Ethiopian Tigrays such as the furious Warrior Alula Aba-Nega Bandas. Can anyone get worse than this, you must be out of your mind. Actually for a rusty and outdated machine, you are doing a great job. I agree that we should have helped you to fight your fight against the Italian colonizers, but to accuse Ethiopians sabotaging your nonexistent rebel is unfounded. We all know you were busy of learning Italian and too happy boiling spaghetti than to raise arms and dye for freedom, that was too manly for you pussycats(Minus the few great ones). Your writing in the first few paragraphs also has the tone the Tigrays have forced you to abandon your Ethiopiawinet, lol, sounds like someone is losing the battle against seventeen years of hunger, obviously empty pride and propaganda can't bake your bread. Amiche, the inefficient and outdated machine, you need to be clear on one thing and that is when we hate Woyanes it is not because we believed your "greate Abay tigray" story rather because of our best knowledge that Meles is an Eritrean, a shabean. That should tell you something.

Here is what I heard from the elders. His father Aba Bunae and his uncle Aba Butaa led a large number of Oromos from Arsi and moved into Adaa very early in the 19th century. Their roots are in Arsi. During the reign of King Sahle Selassie (who always wanted to mix with all the different people in his domain, sometimes to the point of obsession, and later reflected again by Lij Iyasu) a marriage was arranged between Bunae's son, and Sahle Selassie's daughter. The French traveller Julius Borelli, in his book Ethiopie Meridionelle, did mention that in his visits to Atse Menelik he has witnessed that both Aba Demo and his wife Kelemework were present, that they were very close to the Emperor.

Other than this I know that his first son was Abisaa, who had two daughters Askale and Yeshi emebet. That this family were one of the wealthiest in Shewa. They owned a lot of land. And mind you Adaa has the most valuable land in the entire country. I do remember one gasha of land few years before the Revolution sold for 60,000 birr. The same price then with which you can build a four bedroom villa in Addis. The Demo/ Abisaa family had hundreds.

Other than this both sisters I mentioned above, thru their wealth, were instrumental in funding the patriots during the Facist Italian occupation. Especially Askale Abissa is very much implicated in the popular uprising known as "ye Bishoftu rebesha", in which over 70 Italians and 200 Hashkeris from Eritrea were butchered. The Italians very aware of what she did, and how she financed the rebels like Dagnaye Mebreku, Zenebe and others first arrested her. Then she was tortured and eventually murdered. This is as much as I know. As a kid I do remember meeting some of the Bunae family, and they having long discussions with my dad, too bad it was all in Oromiffa. I am just an Addis Ababa one language dummy, lol, wished I heard what they were talking about.

Some of you make me wonder how die hard you are when you try to explain shabians what Ethipia is and who Ethiopians are. Especially when you dont see things in the present situation of shabians and how they see things.

The very most thing which depresse shabians is the greatness of Ethiopia. When we cellebrate Adwa with great enthusasism, the shabians were ordered to shoot to the very esence of African freedome. The hole african were fighting, rebaling, sabotaging the colonial power while shabians were marchning with the colonialists hand in hand and shooting to the last and only remaining proud of africa. The hate for adwa victory is more in shabians than fashist italians. Because the very existance of shabialand is based on italian coloniazation. The hole Africa will cellebrate Adwa. It is the pride of Africa. It is the turning point of the hole african history which marked and said to Europians no more colonization. Full stop! So dear Ethiopians do not west time explaining why we cellebrate Adwa to shabians. When we cellebrate we are insulting them. Period. This much are we defferent. We cellebrate that we kicked the colonizers and they cellbrate the legacy colonizers give them. The only remaining thing for shabians is only to reducle what ever belongs to Africa like they belong to some other continent while the victory of Adwa becomes more African than ever by each year. It is a horrible unfortunate but we have to live with it.

Long live Adwa vicotry.
When the stolen obliques came back home i just simplly cried. I can not explaine it. And one lunetic shabia said to us imagine if the govt use the money for some project which helps the ppl. Again look here, we are different. But by doing so Adwa repeate its victory for all africans again. The looted african treasurri which decorated the europian museumes will come back home. Adwa is beyond Ethiopia. The pride of Africa.

Long live Adwa's VICTORY.

It's a great and honorable action to commorate the victory of Adwa .But also don't forgate February 28th and 29th 1974 known by the Ethiopians as the "Ye Yekatit 66 Lewt " ignored by the Derg who prefered the day of September 12 which he took power and also by the actual regime which prefers to celebrate the day where his milicia occupied Addis .Anyway history will witness who were the true heros of the peoples of Ethiopia . FREEDOM AND POWER FOR THE ETHIOPIAN PEOPLES !!!! LONG LIVE THE TRUE ETHIOPIANS !!!!

No name calling please my dear sisters and brothers - it is far from our cultur. Well is it not that the History of Ethiopia is mostly the Histtory of its northern part. History of Adwa is the History of Ethiopia. History of Adwa is the History of Africa and it is black history. Lets all be happy that we are Ethiopians period. May God bless you all where ever you may be. Long live Ethiopia and its history,
