Ethiopia - Marriott International denies Reporter's story

nazret.com - Last week Addis Ababa based Reporter, wrote that Sunshine Construction is to sign an agreement with Marriott International to build Ethiopia's first Marriott hotel and Executive Apartment to be managed by Marriott. The paper said, "Senior Marriott executive to come to Addis to sign franchise deal with Sunshine"

nazret.com contacted Marriott International to confirm the story and in an email response, Marriott denied the report. Marriott told nazret.com that, "Marriott International is keen to establish presence in Ethiopia and we are actively seeking opportunities to work with development partners there.

At the present time however, we haven’t concluded the agreements for any hotels in Ethiopia and I am afraid the report you are referring to in the local paper is inaccurate. We will make sure to let you know if and when those projects are confirmed".

nazret contacted Sunshine Construction but received no response.

"..nazret.com contacted Marriott International to confirm the story.."

Thank you very much Nazret! Thumbs up for you guys!

I start to believe that Nazret.com is becoming a netural & true voice.
Thank you very much again for your investigation & exposing that mad reporter and his owner Amare Aregawi. I am sick and tired of The Reporter and its graffiti - I wonder though how Aregawi gets away from EPRDF's jail - why EPRDF tolerate him...a free & fair media???..... Hmmmm...?? Looks to me that Aregawi of the Reporter is infected with some sort of an acute encephalitis with a viral neuro-invasive disease with an end result - Yes - a mad dog:crazy:!

Thank you Nazret - stay strong & be fair! avoid being like Abbaymedia, The Reporter, Ethiomedia or Ethiopian Review.

While I appreciate Nazret.com's journalism ethics and try to conifrm the story from Marriot, I do not believe that the story was made up from nowhere. I don't think the liers in Ethiopia go as far as fabricating lies which involve the name of this well known and respected hotel chain. Marriot executives are probably being careful in confirming the agreement while it is only premature and not yet signed.

Again, two thumbs way up for Nazret.com!

Peace!

Dishonesty seems to be the Modus operandi in Ethiopia.Starting with the PM all the way down to lowest level government bureaucrat and most business people affiliated with the government seem to engage in : exaggeration, outright lying, stretching the truth. The sad part of this is that they have no shame doing it!

Thanks Nazret, this is sick. It happens all the time. Remember about some Thailand firm investing billions of USD (mind you usd) into the Ethiopian real estate, some gold company finding huge gold deposit. The number they were talking about would dwraf South Africa in production. There was also this big oil company from Texas signing contract, I checked it was an individual with home address, no website or office to speak of.

This has nothing to do with my opposition to the TPLF but in this day and age what is the point of out right lying. Any major news of claims of any kind from Ethiopia, sorry I just do not take it until further follow up.
Great shame

It looks like you are reporting according to your own perception, not by the fact.
Marriot told nazret.com"marriot international is keen to establish presence in Ethiopia and we are actively seeking opportunities to work with development partners there.at the present time however we haven't concluded the agreements. ....."
According to their statment they don't want to deny nor confirm.it could be buisiness atitude or strategy.

Busted! Time to go to plan B.
Call the hotel any combination of “Mariottt”, “Marrrriotttt”, or like Amharic word “Marr-Hewott” that’s close enough for me. Sorry “Mariot” already taken locally!

If all failed, Viola “SUNSHINE HOTEL!”

don't be "Ye Ayitt Mesiker Denbitt"

All Sunshine needed was for the government to give them a piece of land on a prime location for free! That is all.
Adding the name "Marriott" to the mix will make this deal too sexy to resist!!!!!

I think Ato Samuel made a gigantic mistake in gearing up the PR too soon. Perhaps he was trying to force the hand of Addis Abeba City Admin to give him the land he is seeking for the second hotel ... Govt seem to be dragging their feet. Whatever his reason, the fact that he has made a public statement puts Sunshine in a less favorable negotiating position ... by Marriott playing coy, they show that they are a lot more cunning and patient negotiator. If I were Sunshine I would immediately contact another major hotel chain and perhaps write a nicely worded f*** you letter to Marriott

Remmember Dubai based company ( non existent) building multi billion dollars Eco-city on lake Shala and Abayata, how about the 100000 tone gold strike in oromia, how many times did the Kuwaites and the South Africans buy Ethio-Djibouti rallway, how about the Uranium found in Bale, where is the Thailand co that was building 6 billion USD city in Merkato....... these are just the few I can remmember but I pretty sure the list goes on and on and on ...

HA! Instead of accusing one of using nick names and censoring my factual observations and comments when one questions all the blatantly false new stories Nazret.com publishes from 3rd parties, Nazret.com has now started to investigate stories, WOW! what a shame they did not investigate and verify the story first before publishing it? A case of shuting the stable door after the horse has bolted :lalala:

The Source of this story is not the Reporter don't blame the messenger, but Sunshine construction, I believe they want to crate positive PR to get new loans from the banks, I also knew straight away it was false because the plot they were talking about has had 2 hotels under construction for the last 3 years!.

How many times will we read about the silly fake investment stories in Ethiopia and never see them happen?

:!:Nazret.com it is time to exercise professional Due dilligence where matters of $$$ investment is concerned, no more lies should appear here THINK & VERIFY ALL STORIES!!!!!!! your reputation is at stake!

Though it is a matter of time to know who is right whether it is the Reporter, Sunshine, or Marriott ...the response from Marriott is striking not only to Reporter but to all of us as Ethiopians. Putting aside our background differences lets look at the statement

"I am afraid the report you are referring to in the local paper is inaccurate."

For them it is only the foreign media that is always right EVEN IF IT IS WRONG as far as sounds good to their greedy needs. How is it possible for investors like Marriott to engage in investment activities with this kind of low mentality towards Ethiopians.

What guarantees do we have that western investors don't make our life miserable by manipulation such as the above information from Marriott if they are allowed to invest in the telcom, Banks, medias, etc.

I hope the Reporter and Sunshine gives explanation.

THE TRUTH

I am with you on this. However, as you well know Nazret is not, for example, The New York Times, or The Washington Post. Compared to these major information sources, where the accuracy of the information they provide is paramount to their reputation and survival, Nazret is just a Mickey Mouse organization (not intended to disrespect) with very very limited resources and thus limited quality control. I tend to view any report coming out of Ethiopia that deals with economic success with a great deal of skepticism / With a Grain of Salt. I have seen this movie played before over and over again! For now, Nazret is what we have so let’s make the best of it.

It looks like they are on sielent auction to give the job to somebody.that is what you call a buisiness atitude.

Yes true. Marriott, Intercontinental, Four Season, Hyatt, Motel 6, and Motel X...they all have intention to build a hotel in Ethiopia.

As Ethiopians, we all love for them to have presence in Ethiopia!

But the catch world is "One day”!

The story could be a dream by Sunshine construction reported as a legitimate news. But what is amazing here is that how much joy many people here get in something as stupid as this news. I am not discounting Nazret.com for confirming the news source. I wish they do this kind of verification on other news as well. I still cannot believe how many people are so happy to dump cold water on the gov't or woyane, when infact the party involved is a private company. It shows that many people are looking for an outlet to vent their own failing and anger towards the gov't. This kind of mentality is so dangerous for the unity of our country. We need to change the culture of hate.

No body has that mentallity,we have been misinformed for so long by successive govt's about our own country. All we need is reallity not propaganda, since our gov't is not a collective of colonizers, they have an obligation to open up the gov't. Economic miracle, investment parade, our economy was so hot four month ago, now we have 14 million people in a brink of starvation, what is wrong with this picture ?

I see you already started to play the victim. “Someone will not get this because Marriott is on auction block to award the name to the highest bidder”.
Of course Marriott or any other big company is out to make a profit. Bring them a good business proposal they will go all the way to Timbuktu to build a hotel. But as I said before, Marriot is not the only hotel chain out there. There is Intercontinental, Westin, Hyatt, Meridien, Holiday Inn, even Hilton and Sheraton to name a few. They all love to have your business!

Besides, what is wrong with the name SUNSHINE or any local name? There are a lot of luxurious hotels with good quality standard across Africa, Middle East, Asia or Europe with no big chain attached to their name. Being a franchise is not the only reason what makes a hotel a great hotel. Plus Hotels change names, franchises all the time. But lately it seems we are awestruck with only Western chain of hotels for some reason.

Nazret thank you very much for taking the extra step to verify the sources. Even when suing third-party sources it is important to verify them, especially in this case since the current regime uses lies and propaganda very successfully. If you don't have the resources, I am sure some truth seekers like my self can help you verify information.

I think the issue is that the hotel is local or international, it's that the service level, quality of the property, etc are different comparing local (like Ghion, Wabe Shebele, etc.) vs. international ones (like the Sheraton, Hilton and soon the Novotel and Ibis). If you have ever stayed at the local hotels, you would know what I am talking about.

I think Nazret.com might have contacted the wrong person. what about this news article from Capital??....."The Marriott Sunshine extensive apartment that at Meskel Square, costing 250 million birr, will be completed in May 2010.
A senior executive of Marriott International is scheduled to come to Addis Ababa next month to sign a franchise agreement with Sunshine.
The franchise agreement will involve the management of what will become the first Marriott apartment and courtyard hotels in Ethiopia to be built and owned by Sunshine Construction.
Marriot Executive Apartment will have 110 rooms, while the courtyard, whose construction has yet to be launched, will have 160, according to Samuel.
Samuel said the overall interior design of the executive hotel apartment was undertaken by Marriott International, for which Sunshine paid 50,000 dollars.
Marriott International is a leading lodging company, according to information posted on its website. Its heritage can be traced to a root beer stand opened in Washington, D.C., in 1927 by J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott. Today, Marriott International has more than 3,200 lodging properties located in the United States and 66 other countries and territories."

I have watched the silver jubilee celeberation of Sunshine Construction on ETV and it shows that the campany is a result of a hard working poor decent people who are besides developing their company doing great works for orphan children by constructing and running schools, perhapes our age old enemy JELEOUS is at work in defaming the campany. May be it is time for the campany to look for a good public relation officer to fight back such misinformation.

I don't think nazret.com have got any contradicting point because both the Reporter and Marriott International never said there is an agreement concluded but a potential to sign an agreement.

I know the sorry state of local hotels but that does not mean someone can’t build and name his Hotel as “Sunshine” or “Haile G/Selasie” or “Kenenisa” and make it a good reputable International standard hotel! The problem we got is not with the name! I hope you get my point.
