Ethiopia - Ethiopian Premier Admits Errors on Somalia

By Stephanie McCrummen

Washington Post Foreign Service

Friday, June 29, 2007; A16

NAIROBI, June 28 --
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said Thursday that his government "made a wrong political calculation" when it intervened in Somalia, where Ethiopian troops are bogged down in a fight against a growing insurgency.

Meles Zenawi

Addressing Ethiopia's Parliament, Meles said his government incorrectly assumed that breaking up the Islamic movement that took control of most of Somalia in June 2006 would subdue the country. He also said he wrongly believed that Somali clan leaders would live up to unspecified "promises."

"We made these wrong assumptions," Meles said on a day when a roadside bomb killed two Ethiopian soldiers in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, and two aid workers were shot dead in northern Somalia.

Opposition members of Parliament have accused Meles of making the same mistake in Somalia that critics say the United States made in Iraq: launching a military intervention without having a political plan.

Many Ethiopian intellectuals and political leaders opposed the intervention because they said it would inevitably create the conditions for the sort of Somalia-based terrorist attacks that Meles intended to contain by invading the country.

In December, Ethiopian forces backing Somalia's transitional government dislodged the Islamic movement, which was popular for the relative security it had brought after years of brutal warlord rule.

Ethiopia and the United States said the Islamic movement had been hijacked by extremists and accused it of harboring terrorists, including three suspects in the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, a charge the Islamic leaders denied.

Since January, fighting between insurgents and Ethiopian and Somali government troops has displaced more than half of Mogadishu's population while the humanitarian situation has deteriorated. On Thursday, Amnesty International accused Kenya of blocking 141 trucks of food and other aid headed for more than 200,000 displaced Somalis suffering from "alarming levels" of malnutrition.

Many businessmen and civil society leaders in Mogadishu say that over the past two weeks, they have been unjustly labeled "al-Qaeda" and their homes and offices have been ransacked by Ethiopian and Somali troops.

One internationally known civil society leader, Abdulkadir Nur, said that troops plundered equipment in his offices and that his colleagues and relatives had been arrested without charge.

Nur said he is simply against what he considers an Ethiopian occupation.

"I do have the right to express my personal views," he said in a statement. "And the transitional government has no right to abuse its power to destroy my livelihood, my personal property and abuse my colleagues and co-workers."

Special correspondent Kassahun Addis in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, contributed to this report.

There you go Melez. You are definitely feeling in Somalia and also in Ogadenia. You are also threatening Eritrea. This is the typical mistakes African leaders make when they send their armies into the other fellow African nations to make sure their military is preoccupied with conflicts and they, the leaders, can avoid coup d'etats and remain in power.

I don't believe it is a mistake to go to war against committed enemy the fundamentalist radical Islams in Somalia or anywhere in the world. Ethiopia has done the right thing and the dividends will come later. But first the human sacrifice before victory and complete incapacitation of the enemy that will never be a threat to its neighbors any more!!

Well, he knew it clearly that he was making a big mistake by invading Somalia but I am sure he ignored the danger and accepted the cash offered to him by US Government. He miscalculated, thanks to his stupidity, that this invasion will benefit Somalia more than it benefits TPLF because it unites the country and isolates the traitors.

What ever Meles’s case might be, we Somalis do not care whether he made mistake or not. He invaded our country and until we defeat the TPLF thugs, the war shall continue.

He is admitting his mistakes because he is in a big trouble. UN Security Council refused to help his puppet government until they bring stability to the country which they cannot do at all. The TPLF troops are targeted daily and they begun to pull out of Mogadishu to find saver places until they leave. Almost 30 TPLF soldiers die daily, according the news in Mogadishu. OLF, ONLF are increasing their offences against TPLF soldiers. The non armed oppositions in Ethiopia are fighting back. The western countries begin to distance themselves from his regime. The only international support he has is the support of the US funded mercenary CIA officers that operate in Horn of Africa and based in Djibouti.

After all of this, this thug, midget and monkey faced liar shows the audacity to contemplate to invade Eritrea! Is he crazy or what!

TPLF will be finished soon and, because they mess with Somalia, their chance of coming back in the future is impossible.

Peace to Horn

I normally ignore white twisted lies such as this, but since I've heard what the PM said i couldn't help to see truth hidden.

What the PM said was that when Ethiopia made a decision to fully withdraw from Somalia after the 2/3 forces already out at that time both Ethiopia and the remanants of UIC made a mistake.

Ethiopia's mistake was political, he said. He further said, " Ethiopia shouldn't have trusted the clan leaders who are affiliated to the UIC".

He also said that the UIC remnants made a military mistake or miscalculation i.e. they thought that after 2/3 of Ethiopian forces left and the few Ugandans replaced them that they(UIC) can defeat Ethiopians , The Au forces and the TFG forces.

In general, what meles said is this. please go to www.aigaforum.com and listen to the audio and check the realities.

Then, what are this Washington post "journalists" talking about? I don't think it was mistranslated from Amharic to English i the parliament. I think they are writing what the wanted to hear.

or Stephanie McCrummen was not attending the Ethics class when she was in college if she really went to one in the first place!!!

Worst of all he is preparing for war with Eritrea again over Badme desert. We don't want it. We want our ports you retard!!. Get our ports back and get the hell out of Ethiopia.
May God punish you for your cold blood killings of innocent civilians.

Amazing !
If we see what this guy is doing from time to time, it is really full of "mistake". The amazing thing is those mistakes are not accidental. He did consciously and deliberately to put the Ethiopian people( which he dislike to death) in trouble. As to me, Meles is considering Ethiopians as his lab animals and that's why he is experimenting. Unfortunately, Ethiopians became so dossile to him to the extent that no other lab animals. I think the time to say no for Meles is elapsed years ago. True Ethiopians need to stop this killer guy before he start more experiments. Thanks to Tony Blair, the entire world missunderstood the behaviour of Meles due to unnecessary appreciations given to him by former British PM. Why Ethiopians has suffer because of Melese's ignorant but scholarly looking deceptive decisions ? NO NO NO. Ethiopians need to stop him. It is already late.

You and I are at the two opposite extremes; however, I want to ask you this. How you think your regime is saver today than it was during the Islamic Courts’s rule? You have a suicide bombers that are willing to search and find Melez even if he hides on a PLATE OF INJERA, and ready blow themselves up to get even with him. You have angry people that your leader killed their families and relatives, and destroyed their properties. You have a regime that invaded a country and harmed the pride of the Somali people. You created a bookmarked date Dec. 24 and 28, 2006, the former being the date TPLF troops invaded Somalia and the latter being the date TPLF Tanks reached Mogadishu, the pride and symbol of Somali nationhood. Do you think he created peace or war?

Man, lately this man is making his cheerleaders life very miserable! I love it! What would the woyane Pensioners and Clowns have to say about it? What about the trumpet of woyanes, Aiga?

I agree with wesi which is everything he did was buying sworn enemy for the country he hate! Every Ethiopian except the few retarded cadres have said NO for Somalia war, unfortunately since the man in charge of the country is against the people and the nation, he knowingly, dragged us into this trouble.

It is also amazing how hard he is trying lately to make his government look like democratic, admitting mistakes and respecting the judicial system(which doesn't exist), which is an indication that he is losing it! See Meles, your little and arrogant heart can not take you anywhere but to your own demise! Admit that you have committed a serious mistake first for ordering the mass killing and arrest of Ethiopians after the May election, and second for unjustly imprisoning the opposition leaders then tarnishing their names, and endangering the countries integrity thinking that might buy you a little more time in Arat kilo, only then you will be forgiven.

I am sure you are Ali Mohamed Gedi's caussin or a Majeerteen thug who is willing to sell Somalia as long as INA YEY is becoming a president or you are seperatist thug who likes to see Somalia in a perpetual chaotic state.

UIC is a Somali entity and if you do not like it, you challenge them. It is not Ethiopia's business to deal with UIC but it is your responsibility to have the guts to fight them and form the government you like.

Unfortunately, you are a thug who is looking for a free ride. It doesn't work that way my friend.

Washington Post is a lier----BIG TIME LIER!

That is NOT what Meles said----anybody can listen to the recording of his latest speech to the parliament and see for themselves! The only mistake Meles referred to was Ethiopia's earlier premature withdrewal plan before Somalia was relatively stable!....then he went on to say that Ethiopia has changed that plan and will stay put in Somalia indefinately untill Somalia is Stable enough and the Somali government is strong enough. "This is a change the Ethiopian government made to an earlier plan to withdrew early----which would have resulted in a return to status quo" Meles said.

either Washington Post is quoting meles out of context or the Amharic speech was mistranslated!-----

1. becoming woyane and declaring war on Ethiopia for 17 years driving the country into poverity for 17 years.

2.Enabling Eplf.

3. Assisting Eplf break away part of Ethiopia.

4. Allowing EPLF to make Ethiopia land locked.

5. Expediting the independence of Eritrea by filing paper works in international orgs such as UN and OAU.

6. Exploiting Ethiopian economy to build up shaabia's

7. Allowing the deportation of Ethiopians from Eritrea while Eritreans were living in Ethiopia.

8. Murdering Prof. Asrat

9. Dividing Ethiopia along ethnic lines.

10. Sacrificing Ethiopians at Badme for useles and point less war. 70,000 Ethiopians got killed and Ethiopia is still land locked.....etc. etc.

Simply, it is better to describe you as the sum of mistakes.

The prime minister is guilty of crimes commited in somalia. He and his masters the USA told us there are AL-QUAIDA in somalia, and that was totaly wrong.
Secondly somalia was a chaotic neighbor with no government and the UIC was able to stablize at least some part of the country and mogadisho for the first time and woyane invasion backed by the US was a very big mistake.
An african country invading another african country in partenership with western country is an insult to the black continent and a burden to ethiopian people which is leaded by illegal and unelected criminal dictator with puppet parliament.
He makes mistakes and mistakes repeatedly but he seems he don't care about it, a law abiding prime minister should have resigned from his post and even the parliament should have impeached him.
Nothing happens and he will be there to kill and terrorize his people and somalians because he don't care about their human value and dignity.
It's time to help the liberation fronts to evict him from Menelik palace and judge him for its crimes infront of the ethiopian people.

WHILE ATO ZENAWE IS INFORMING US HIS MISCALCULATIONS, LET ME LIST FOR HIM OUR OWN MISTAKES:
1) We Somalis should have killed you the decade you lived in Somalia & enjoyed life in Mogadishu on the expense of our tax payers. Remember you were being man -handled in those days by colonel Gedi of the NSS, this prime minister's father. Remember Somali officers chufering you around in Mogadishu.
2) Better yet we could have made a deal with Mengistu in 1980 to give us Abdullahi Yusuf & Aydiid, in return we will hand him your four feet midget & dispicable soul to Ethiopia with the condition that all warlords from both sides are hunged immediately.
3) We should have eliminated the founding fathers of warlordism (Yeey & Aydiid)in the early 1980's instead of keeping them in the notorious prison of sodon jirow, to send loud & clear message to the future warlords that crime doesn't pay. Today what we have is, crime does pay if you keep at it long enough. Just look at TFG officials, they all have a criminal rap-sheet that is a mile long. Are we supposed to reward criminals for their crimes in the name of illusive stability?
4) We should have supported the UIC, ONLF, & anybody who called for Jihad on your rag-tag troops, instead we submitted to your occupation to save lifes & look where that shortsighted perception get us, you killed thousands, destroyed our capital, & uprooted 400,000 of our helpless civilians.
5) You didn't make any mistake as far as I am concerned, you just completed Ethiopia's age old aspiration of one day invading Somalia & you will not withdraw unless Somalis show you the door with their determination & blood. I have no doubt that eventually justice will prevail & you & your stooges will one day pay for your crimes against the Somali people, take that to the bank...

I agree with you my friend. We created our own enemy. That shows you Tigreans have no appreciation of what we have done for them at all. They returned the favor we did for them by invading our country, killing our people and even raping our women.

It is not a wasted investment any ways, we learned who these creatures are and we make sure we do not give them a chance again.

Gross distortion by Washington Post On PM Meles Report!
Here is another distortion like the one perpetrated on Seyoum Mesfin's letter to the United Nations. The Post is now claiming Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told parliament "it was a "made a wrong political calculation" when it intervened in Somalia". Nowhere did the Prime Minister make such a statement whether it was in his speech or during the Q&A session. In short, here is what PM Meles said:
Our mission was to break the Islamic forces and help the Somalis restore peace in their country. We then opened discussions with the clan leaders who were providing critical support to the defeated Islamic militia. After weeks of negotiation, including in Addis Abeba, they assured us they would only address their grievances through peaceful means. We assumed they would keep their word and then started implementing our troop redeployment plan. That was our mistake. After we withdraw two-thirds of our force, the clans started making several miscalculations. They felt the remaining Ethiopian force no longer had the troop strength to be a formidable challenge. Then they not only started attacking us and TFG but also the Ugandan contingent of the AU peace keeping force. However, in due course, we were able to correct our mistakes.
What Washington Post reported is a gross distortion and is sufficient ground for the government to revoke the accredition for the journalist.

To All.

I hope I wasn't dragging my feet for so-long in order to comment here. However, after reading the report and all most all the comments, I have this to say.

First of all, Meles is not a saint but an opportunistic who knows when to strike, but happen to make a deal with people who their tongue and their heart is opposite at all times and those are "The warlords".

Secondly, he trusts a regime that has been losing allies and friends in the Middle East since they invaded Iraq. Even their senior part members are saying "Military Action" was not the case but diplomacy.

Thirdly, I am sure he is not (Meles) mistaken but miss-calculated the consequence of interfering and trusted the untrustworthy warlords seat-driven regime of the so-called TFG.

Now here is the solution. To admit your mistakes it takes courage and commitment, since you are better than the thugs in Mogadishu pull out your troops defend your border and let Somalis decided their own plight, or else you will weaken the strength of your armed forces and create more rebels for yourself.

Remember Somali disunity began after the invasion of Ethiopia in 1977.

People will remember Woyane as clique of gungs who don't remember what they say the next day. Lies and deception are the two core values of woyanes. They are known for their forked tongue and twisted heart. They say one thing in their mother tongue, and a diametrically opposite thing in Amharic or English. They are tigrian nationalist today, and they appear as Ethiopian then next day. These people are losers. Principle is not in their dictionary at all.

Very interesting! .....So now we, the Ethiopians, are the cause of chaos of your defunct country???

Bro, please if you ever want to write something sensible, make sure to draft the posting only after the "Merkana" from consuming Khat all afternoon, dissipate from your necrosis brain.

First and foremost, Ethiopia invaded your country only when you guys tried to flex your muscles a little beyond your boundaries. You you thought that Ethiopia was weak because the country was in turmoil with the revolution and also the country was trying to quell the rebellions from northern province and plus with all the Khat consumed the wretched people of Somalia miscalculated the mighty army of Ethiopia; you guys thought the Ethiopian army was divided in many fronts and you wanted to venture in our beautiful Harargue.

But thanks to your allah the merciful, ...bla..bla... the Ethiopian army swept you back to your country.

So, please do not entertain this BS idea that Ethiopia is the cause of all the chaos of your country.

So.. till next time.. Keep on posting

Whether dictator Meles admits his suicidal mistake or not is irrelevant for the Somali people, beacuse he has invaded our country and killed thousands of Somalis. He has to pay dearly for his ill-fated invasion and occupation and his mercenary troops will be forced to withdraw in humiliation. Somali people are known for their hatred towards colonialism and warlordism, that is why the Union of Islamic Courts received the enormous support from the public. Somali freedom fighters are in the foorsteps of Sayid Mohamed Abdulle Hassan and we will liberate our country by any means necessary. Warlords, their mooryaans and apologists will face justice sooner than they think. These warlord thugs will not be rewarded for the destruction of our country, they will be punished severely for their crimes.

It is clear to observers Melese intervention in Somalia is to divert attention from his domestic political problems. Now,he finally admittted that the invasion is wrong;ironically, using this occation he is also announcing his military readiness against Eritria. These developments are also taking place under same curcumstances;as it was then,at this very moment the government is under increasing international prussere to release the political prisioners.
Once again we have come in full circle to learn,no matter what, the government is commited to solve political problems anly through military means. If such was not the case,as soon as we learn the P/m's admission of mistakes,we should not have been told to brace for another war. This war threat is in line with Sebhat's speech;Nega said then tplf is the sole garantuer of the Eritrian people.Inthat speech he gave hint that his government is disposed to remove the eritrian leadership;as that leadership have showen unwillingness to go along with weyane's plan to declare its independent state.
By now the Ethiopian public and the military should know clearly that, weyane is the only enemy this region has.If weyane goes to war with Eritria, our people need to join the peoples resistance and show tplf the way out.
We oppose the weyanes plan to dominate the region by fomenting war and hate.We dont believe war between the Eritrian and Ethiopian people is the solution to the region.Weyane's rule is a total failur;there is only one soultion to this problem admit the failur, vacate office ,and let the Ethiopian people decide their future.Fomenting about war as a method to deflect attention to long standing political problem is immature behaviour. Not only that Melese's plan to declare independent state as asafe heaven willnot hold up:both Ethio's and Eritrians will wihp you.Who knows they might even work a commen plan to live together:Melese and his minions dont bank on the idea that independet tigria will save you.

here is Meles speech for Prlament
“There was however a military miscalculation on the part of these groups. First, they thought since a large number of the Ethiopians were withdrawn the remaining will be incapable to do much. They were of the view that since the African Union troops were not fully accustomed to the conditions and environment in Somalia, they would be easy prey for successive attacks that will force them out. Second, they thought since others had failed in their previous attempts in Mogadishu the same would be the fate of Ethiopian troops too,” Meles said.

Meles conceded that his government had politically miscalculated that the situation could be resolved peacefully because “the clan elders repeatedly promised to help.”

I agree with Ghehon and others like myself whose comments got rejected. Some of the things that we post here may be offensive but I think we're all adults. I now feel that nazret.com is a kinigit (CUD) supporter because every time I post anti-CUD comments, they get rejected.

Gehon,

Stop lamenting because your postings did not show.
So what? There are more to life that your writings.

Your aspersions - about the moderator being inclined to one political ethnic group or favoring certain political views - are totally unjustified.

s/he did dismissed more than 18 postings not only yours.

So get over it and try to write more.

The brutal long period civil war in Somalia and the consequent Somali Diaspora had a positive side effect. It forced Somalis to know better their Ethiopian brothers and Ethiopian their Somali brothers. This created a new feeling, never seen since the Ethiopian Emperor Al Nejashi. This even brought to end the recent hostility of 1964 and 1977.
Unfortunately Mr. Meles Zenawi for his personal and volatile interest renewed the conflict, I’m afraid even for the next decades, and non for "… a wrong political calculation". I remember when I used to ask why our Ethiopian brothers not intervene to end the atrocities perpetuated by these Warlords. No, they did not and no other African country or AU did anything for 16 years of brutality.
Why then now, when for the first time some Somalis dislodged the warlords and restored hope for Somalis, Ethiopian troops interfere to bring them back to power? Why the Ethiopian soldiers are killing Somalis, perpetuating carnage like warlords for the interest of Meles Zenawi?

This is not our interest as Somalis or Ethiopians. Why should we then participate?
I love Somalia, I love Ethiopia, and I love all Africa. Stop Meles and don't let him and New Cons create hatred between our brothers and sisters.

Hussein.
