Ethiopia - 'Historical' agreement on election conduct reached

Pundits had predicted otherwise - the momentous historical 2005 campaign was said never to be repeated and all major political powers had wounds they blamed each other for inflicting.

But conversely to this assessment, for the first time in the Ethiopia's modern political history, the leaders from three of the nation's major political parties, and Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, representing the ruling Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), jointly announced the successful completion of a first round of negotiations to seal a landmark agreement on a code of conduct for the elections.

The EPRDF together with the three survivors of the former opposition coalition that performed strongly in 2005, the CUDP - Lidetu Ayalew's vibrant Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP), Ayele Chamiso's CUD, and the opposition's camp veteran strongman Engineer Hailu Shawel's All Ethiopian Unity Organisation (AEUO) - jointly endorsed the Political Parties' Election Code of Conduct and its implementation directive last Friday, October 30, 2009 at the Sheraton Addis.

'We were there…we have moved on' - Hailu Shawel

"We were there," AEUO's chair Hailu Shawel said in his speech, referring to others he sees as still consumed by the politics of cynicism, hatred and bitterness.
"We moved on and now we all learn to respect and see each others as friends do. When the negotiations started we were all indifferent to another and now we are all friends," said Hailu, who for nearly two decades has led various political groups and coalitions in the opposition camp. Now he says the only way forward is cooperation and he believes it has just started.

Hi All,
This is a good beginning for the democratization process in Ethiopia.My only concern is that Hailu Shawel didn`t bend enough from the waist at a 45 degree angle when he shakes the hands of H.E.PM Meles Zenawi.Hailu Shawel should know that not many people are lucky like him to have the opportunity to shake the hands of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia and Africa.I hope this will be a lesson.

I am not surprised at hailu Shawel. He is a man who left Prof Asrat for death. He is a man who sold out the Ethiopian people when he disbanded Kinijit because someone had not showed him respect. The good thing is most Ethiopians know that he is a worse dictator than Meles Zenawi. As the saying goes, time is one of the best disinfectants. Though it took more time that it normally should take for some of our compatriots to come to the understanding of who Hailu Shawel is, what his mindset is, what kind of political animal he is, what he represents and what his aspirations are, it is now all out there to for every body see him for himself/herself in unmistakable way. Better late than never. For the majority of us the last few weeks have been moments of vindications more than any other time ever as long as this individual is concerned. It is a vindication for those of us who repudiated, rejected and condemned Hailu Shawel even before the problem in Kinijit bubled up to the surface and became public. This is a vindication for our heroin leader Birtukan Midheksa and hereoic leader Dr. Berhanu Nega. This is a vindication for all Andinet leaders, members and supporters why they rejected Hailu Shawel. We knew right from the get go that this guy has no clue about politics, democracy, a political organization and political strategies and tactics, none whatsoever. Let alone to the modern political era, I am not sure if Hailu Shawel could even fit into the feudal era centuries ago. Simply put, he is not only utterly apolitical and stupid but alos completely out of steps with the present realities in Ethiopia and the world. By all measures, our forefathers who even had never heard what a school is were much better and smarter politically than Hailu Shawel is. Every other sentence that comes out of his untamed mouth keeps stating 'hizbun astemiren.' If there is any one who needs political education in Ethiopia today, the first one that comes to mind is none other than Hailu Shawel if he is smart enough to learn the ABC.. of politics. For those of us who are in the camp of the struggle for freedom, justice and democracy in Ethiopia, Hailu Shawel's deal with the terrorist TPLF group is both a vindication and 'a small victory' in that it disinfects the freedom camp. For some of our compatriots who had been confused with what Hailu Shawel was up to, the cloud is gone and the sky is clear. It is one less confusion in the freedom camp. Those few handful compatriots and patriotic Ethiopians who innocently and genuinly misplaced their hope in Hailu Shawel now have had the chance to understand him, repudiate and condemn him and I call upon you to rejoin the genuine freedom camp led by Andinet and MEDREK. Rejoin your brithers and sisters. We will welcome you with open arms. The way forward is Andinet and MEDREK. Andinet and MEDREK are now providing mature leadership we all have been craving for the struggle for freedom, democracy and justice in Ethiopia. The recent new-found friendship between Meles, Hailu and Lidetu is a well-orchestrated ploy by EPDRF to marginalize MEDREK. It is not in the best interest of EPDRF to have opposition parties united. Even if the next election is certain to be EPDRF to "win," opposition parties being united might entail the unexpected, at least the margin of their parliamentary seats might diminish. Of all opposition parties, if they play their card cleaverly, MEDREK poses the greatest threat, so the desire to push aside the group to the sideline. Why MEDREK a potential, formidable opponent? The group comprised of politicians who represent the majority of Ethiopian ethnic groups. Moreover, almost a significant number of them still participate in Ethiopiabn politics so that they have a political power base they rely upon. And even some of them worked in EPDRF government, and they have a first hand knowlege how EPDRF functions. It is easy to isolate MEDREK when there are two eager politicians who are despised by their former supporters, and who are deprived of having new converts, winning as a result might not be the idea they have in mind. Surviving as a political animal, even without a teeth to bite into the system, is acceptable to Hailu and Lidetu. The two politicans high point happened to be in the 2005 election, and they know quite well that will not be repeated. So they wide opened themselves to EPDRF's manipulation. The EPDRF politicians, those who run the day by day basis of politics, know as long as they offer cover for these two politicians they jump to their side, well, in the name of signing a Code of Conduct, whatever name they came up with. EPDRF for long benefited having opposition parties which undervalued the party. With MEDREK that might not happen. Frustrating MEDREK became the new policy EPDRF should engage to. Whether they might succeed in frustrating them finally obiletrating its very existence, however, should not be the province of EPDRF. When they started to form this group, the founding members of MEDREK should have expected this to happen, and, I hope, they are prepared for it. With the signing of this paper Meles has started the initial plan of marginalizing MEDREK. I bet my last penny Hailu and Lidetu might be happy. In fact, a tacit approval of discrediting MEDREK might be expected of them from EPDRF, and do not be suprised if they are eager to offer. Meles is a political animal. He knows what is going on in the "enemy" camp, and, the way he sees it, it is easy to create in-fighting inside one's opponents camp so that a formidable opponent might not be in existent. Ethiopian opposition parties should be wise enough to know the daily political calculation EPDRF is computing. Failing to do so only warrants them to live longer than they want to with frustration.

It is amazing how most people are criticizing everything. To participate or not to participate in the coming elections, that is the question.
Can there be free and fair elections with an opposition leader behind bars?
Can the government, which will result from the elections of 2010 going to be legitimate, as if it is the result of democratic elections, while other opposition parties are not participants?
Has Hailu Shawel, stopped to be an opposition leader and has his party become a sisterly party of EPRDF? Are there no more ideological differences?
Will history vindicate or condemn Hailu Shawel?
What does he mean when he says we are friends and we are looking forward for cooperation, as if it is going to be the beginning of a long love affair?
In democratic countries, opposition does not mean of course animosity. It means a different and better opinion as much governing a country is concerned. Whoever convinces the voting body becomes the government.
If the regime really wants democratic elections and does not want to ride to success on the back of some opposition leaders, let it open the door wide, so that all opposition parties will be able to participate in the elections. Otherwise, the coming elections will be as usual no more than bogus elections.

Even seeing him in such light does not justify the 90 degrees bow he gestured. Nazareth’s picture is an enthusiastic diplomatic exchange, still with some puzzling gesture.
