Ethiopia oil seed exports earn more than coffee

* Oil seed exports earn $326 million in first 11 months
* Coffee falls because of drought, low demand

By Tsegaye Tadesse

ADDIS ABABA, June 19 (Reuters)
- Oil seed exports overtook coffee as Ethiopia's biggest foreign exchange earner in the 11 months to May, the agriculture ministry said on Friday.

Africa's biggest coffee producer is also the world's fourth largest exporter of sesame seeds but has for decades relied on its premium grade coffee for hard currency inflows.
It received $326 million from the sale of 261,216 tonnes oil seeds, mainly sesame, and another $321 million for 114,442 tonnes of coffee over July-May.

"Ethiopia has enjoyed a bumper harvest in oil seeds during the current season," said Tarekegn Tsege, public relations head at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
"The country produced 353,373 tonnes of oil seeds of which 215,000 tonnes was sesame and the remaining 138,373 tonnes were niger seeds, haricot beans, pulses and chickpeas."
He told Reuters oil seed production increased by 59.5 percent compared with the previous year and revenues were greater by 46.8 percent.

The Horn of Africa country prides itself as the birthplace of coffee and is the continent's biggest producer and consumer of the bean.
A drought in the south has cut output this year and global downturn compounded the problem by slashing demand.

Overall production this year is forecast to drop by 14.7 percent from an annual average of 330,000 tonnes and export earnings are seen dropping 30-40 percent.
The country earned some $525 million from exporting 170,888 tonnes of mostly high quality arabica in 2007/08 (June-July).

Ethiopia exported its oil seeds to 27 countries including China, Saudi Arabia and Sudan, while Germany, the United States and Saudi Arabia were the top buyers of coffee, Tarekegn added.

He dismissed complaints by some U.S. importers and roasters that the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) marketing system was blocking them from buying beans of their choice.
"The complaint is not based on the existing reality. At ECX warehouses, beans from different regions are stocked based on their origin and quality to allow buyers to trade in coffee of their preference", he said.

Wow.... look at this yellow sea of flowers... all the way to infinite horizon...
What can I say but keep on praising Meles Adm. for providing Ethiopian people with a stable country in order for the citizens to reach all their potential. Halleluiah.. Allah Kebir.... Keubreuh ye sefa amlakeh hoy
At least under Meles Administration, Ethiopians don't have to be scared or be constantly on the guard from the Dergue cadres and finally now they become prolific in every segment of the economy.
What more can I say that enlarge this beautiful picture with yellow flowers and hang it in my hut

If only we have accountable government Iwill celebrate this kind of news!

It is hard for me to see all this $$$ running an accountable account!!!

The numbers are there to show how good they are, but who holds who accountable?

It is good to know that we are producing a cash crop other than "coffee". Let's hope this will trickle down to the farmers. Unless the bigtime farmers are those memebers of the Meles circle.
I would like to mention on this occasion that the above picture seems to have been doctored from the like of a U.S.A farm site. I don't think that was from Ethiopia.

You confirm it yourself - "Tigray region of Ethiopia"
As long as it is in Ethiopia - it is still Ethiopian product - it does not matter if it is from Hadigalla or Hamaressa or Mekele - as long as it is from Ethiopia.

See the majority of us (95%) as we see those progress as Ethiopian and not as separate x or Y provinces

So please keep your execrable mentality to those who share your way of thinking

What a paradox in one way they swank for huge oil seeds production in another they beg in behalf of millions of hungry souls. Anyway Ethiopia’s dependency in single product for hard currency should be ended. The export economy needs to be versatile. It is an encouraging beginning for the oil seeds to exceed coffee in hard currency generation.
Mainly oil seeds come from Welkaite. I know Humera and its surrounding personally. Arguably it is the most fertile land of the nation. When I was there Tigrean farmers and TPLF soldiers who were discharged honorably from the army were settling. EFFORT gives agricultural inputs for farmers with credit and in return forcefully buys their harvest on predetermined price.
Yes the land is taken forcefully from Gonder. Undoubtedly it is generating large amount of money for Tigrai kilil. It is their blood line. The land generously yields sesame, niger seed, sorghum and cotton. All are cash crops except sorghum. Sorghum is the staple food of the region. Injera, bread and tella are made out of it. Pro-sesame plantation needs little attention. Small piece of land makes large some of money. Con-once the harvest is ready for reaping unless it is gathered asap the merciless weather destroys it within days. In harvest seasons Humera will be swarmed with thousands of Sudanese laborers and Ethiopian highlanders.

David Huna & visitor,

Adi Arkay is still under Gonder region, it should be part of Tigray because it is Tigray land as its names stated it like welkiat, Tselemti, Humora. The rest of Gonder lands named Amharic. All the lands were taken during Haileselassie regime. Amhara stole all the Eritrean factories too looters. Tigray never taken anyone's land because we have power rather we gave one third of our Tigray to Afar and a part of Agow all the way to Sekota are ours we know it. In Sokota still the people play the Tigray tradition like Ashenda and others despite they have been converted to Amhara language. Most of their songs even Amharic they tied to either king Yohanes or Axume. Amhara people are incredible to lie and cheat to their own brothers and sisters like the Oromo you stolen the province of shewa and Addis Ababa. Thanks God Deki Youhanse came to power and rendered the might justice after 100 years lie and cheat with out God fear. No wonder King Menelik Abandoned his fellow Gonder people while there under attack and burned their sanctuary churches by Moslem Mahdi armies and to the worst Menelik sent his mercenaries to kill King Yohanes while he was defending the defenseless Amhara Gonder.

David, Huna, and Visitor,

The Humera and Welkait region has been retaken not stolen. At the beginning, your stupid emperors (not anoited at Axum) took these lands from Tegray to may Tegray weaker. Now, we got it back. Sons of Alula from Tegray retook it back, period.

Do not let people know your ignorance, please.

Just for the history!

Mr. Halafi Mengedi,

Now, the whole Ethiopia is under tplf colony. Humera wolkaite and tsegede raya and korem are all lands of Amhara. We will fight. We know you are settling people, displacing and killing indegenous residents. Your soldiers are raping girls.

When the time comes we will reclaim our land.

You talk about the Yohanness-- Axum bla bla...

It is Amhara that lierated you from Shaebia. Amhara fought and gave you back your Badme.

But this time if Shaebia comes again, you are by your own.

Anyway don't be proud of your tigray. At most, it can only be the first country in the world that was built on looting, stealing and cheating.

yellow flowers remind me of a month of September back home, Addis Zemen, Addis Libbs, farm fields shine with sunflowers(Soof), Noog, Bekolo Eshet, everything beautiful and bright.

Shegaw YHY, Meles takes all the credit or all the blame as a leader, but, he is one of the leadership, there are many invisible people working behind the scene to make it happen, however, Meles allows himself surrounded with highly educated people, unlike, Menge Al Mariam surrounded himself with murderers, that is the difference.

Ethiopia earnes over $150 million (USD) every year from sesseme export to countries such as China. Most of this if not all is produced in the highly fertile lands of Welkayt Tegede and Humera. Yet, this regiond and its native inhabitants who are caushgt under the authoritative regime of Addis and Tigray have never seen any benefits from these profits. Infact all the profits generated from the agrigultural products of this region are exploited and transfered unashamedly to the rest of Tigray. While most of the infrastructure development such as roads, telecommunication, health care and education are built in Tigray, there is little of significant development to be conducted in the Welkayt region yet.

Don't you people undrstand anything Meles took that part of the country and gave it to the Tigre province for tis purpose oil seeeds had a big market ever since the time of Emperor Haile Sellasie and many people from all over the countryhad migrated to this part of Ethiopia to farm oil seeds and a lot of people made a lot of money. Now the Woyanes will make a lot of money that is the whole game.

Alula is right to mention that 70% of the oil seed farm products are from Tigray state because the kinijit and Co. hate groups always claim that Tigray has no viable means to support her populace and the aggregate productivity of the state is negligible, which is totally unfounded.
Wolkait Tsegede is was and will be Tigray 100%.No doubt about it.Tafari Mekonnen stole it to weaken Tigray like his uncle Menelik who sold Eritrea to the Italians.

@Halaf Megedi
Shouldn't Finnfine restore it's original name and discard the neftegna name of Addis Ababa too?
