Ethiopia opposition says nearly 450 members jailed

ADDIS ABABA, Nov 3 (Reuters)
- Ethiopian opposition parties say nearly 450 of their members have been jailed to stop them running as candidates in national elections in May next year.

Documents given to Reuters by four opposition parties listed the prisoners' names, the dates on which they were arrested and the jails in which they were being held.

One party, the All Ethiopia Unity Organisation (AEUO), has recorded seven murders of members over the last 12 months that it says were politically motivated.

"These jailings are to stop our members running in elections," Gizachew Shiferaw, deputy leader of the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) party, told Reuters. "It has become a strategy for the ruling party. Ethiopia is a one-party state."

Most analysts say the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) will easily win the 2010 elections -- but opposition parties say that is because government harassment will stop their members contesting.

This so called Eng. Gizachew is simply a jackass. He is perfect to follow others, not to lead an organization. That is why he uses old tricks (designed by others) as his only political strategy, while the designers of those strategies have already changed one way or another.

WOW!
Ii sad for any person who tested what democracy is to just support Meles "EPDRF" to keep on arresting people for being leader type and tell us no one is good enough to be a leader.
This is what burns me inside out how we Ethioians abroad do not want equality to all and fair and accountable government. If only I think for myself today and let such anfair treatment go on for too long there is a say "what goes around comes around" or in our term "Giff Kale yemekfel gideta alle"

All my immidiate family are out of Ethiopia and for me I could say who cares and live my life here in Norht America.. I could
But I feel for my people for my country.

Even those who benefit now and would not want a real election they will be sorry when they find out later that they were wrong. When they see people killing each other out of furstration they may weak up and say oh no! Today is the day to stand for EQUALITY NOT FOR SPECIAL STATUS!

Yeha, and Z-Mike and likes will jump and say the opposition is just crying and it is a lie!
When the opposition leaders said it was happening they say to give names and where they are from or else it is an exuce now they have the names it is time to make up story and lable them to stil run one party election.

This is simple:
If opposition party members who are leader types are arrested they can't run to become MP if they do not become an MP then only EPDRF party will be running then the ODS of winning is 100%!

If it is not fair election it is not election so that is why people going in strugle camp to change govenment which cost lifes and infostructre of a country! Then we call the people who strugle for fairness Terorists while we should be calling the Dectator Meles a Terorist!

Enough!

These 450 are not members of the opposition party; but bunch of hooligans who are bought by the Diaspora riff raffs to create havoc during the election. The opposition parties are not mentally ready to confront Meles in May 2010 so they are trying anything to disrupt the election and get the attention of the world media.

Really it is shame to find out that the opposition is incapable to come with one solid candidate who can bring together all Ethiopians to challenge Meles. And the majority of the Diaspora are the remnants of Dergue or those who want to bring back the monarchy that all Ethiopia had shoved in the toilet long ago. The majority of those 78 Millions citizens - 82% are younger people born after the monarchy was trashed so no one in his right mind will accept even a constitutional monarchy in nowadays Ethiopia. The opposition party are just wasting their time -and that famous Oromos party - they are dysfunctional at the present time - there is no even one single issue they agree with - The Oromos of Wollega have a totally different agenda from the Oromos of the South & Shewa. It is a pity that we Ethiopian will be witnessing another election where the incumbent party will present itself unchallenged.

Personally I am against a leader or same party who will be at the helms of a country for over two terms - we don't want another dynasty; but for the sake of economy growth and all the progress that Meles has heralded in the country - I don't see anyone else who can be better leader than him. It is very unfortunate but we will be seeing another term of Meles

It is even more shame for you to accept the fact that Meles will arest if he thinks you are a good leader or people like you.

Where is Debela Dinsa?
In jail!
Why becuase Meles is scared that he could easily be elected.
Debela stoped "RED TEROR" and allow people to bring in food when Kebele was choking the city. He was told to go home when he surendered when woyane came to power right after when they know how popular he is they arrested him. Sentenced him for 13 years but then election 2005 was arround the corner so they re sentenced him!! Could you explain that?
This is what Birtukan is up set where the govenment is arresting with excuse just becuase they are not in the same camp. Remember Siye he was arrested and when the judge released him he was re arrested by Meles and sentenced in another court just to hide him from election and public seen.

Wher is Birtukan? in jail and this are all the popular and known people how many are ther in the rural area suffering in jail ?
Un countable!

You sit here and deffend you god Meles for his triks!

How would there be any one to replace him if they are being arrested?

One day you will be awake when you hear in the news "Ethiopia turned to Ruwanda" It is sad but if we continue this way that is fact and reality!

Stop claping for dectator and his skim and stop insulting 94% the population that they have no brain or could not find leader mongst them!

Stop!

Yes, He is smart and knows how to talk, but is that enough for leader. His ignorance will divid us and expose us to hate each other and then what is good if we have buildings and roads with out unity?

Smart people are enemy of Meles, but opportunistics and usless people is the once he attracts so that they will clap for him in parlament so that he will look good!
The once who are able are thretened or arrested to stop them to challenge him!

Change is good and difficult but in the long run it brings stability and accountability!

"Ethiopia opposition says nearly 450 members jailed"

Hey Naz.com,which oppositions you are talking here? There's no a genuine existing oppositions that could be a challenge and a threat to Melse any more.Except, those fighting rebels whom yet a serious threat to Melse regime but in fact an effective and shaking Melse regime but far to knock him out whoever, their continue conducting fights in the southeastern provinces costing Melse regime big times and he can't void to deny them their continue attacks against woyane soliders.

Those, highlanders tried to opposed Melse regime,Melse cleverly exhausted them all.Melse, played smart, first he broke the shell of the CUD tghe called coalitions and secondly,he dealt with one by one until that he rooted out from their hideouts. Finally,a humble Eng Hailu surrendered and peacefully submitted with Melse.

However, the victor(Melse)is still half way to clean the house and the most difficult part is the remained armed rebels. We'll see and wait of how Meles would be dealing and tackle the south and eastern armed rebels.

Also,a woyane regime should be reach out and open the peace talks with the leaders of ONLF and OLF and seek a united Ethiopiato which we all need it specially in this modern days, its shame to us and the rest of the continent to continue the useless civil wars. Therefore,we should all hope the best ending of our local conflicts and that a diplomacy approaches & a peaceful ways to resolve the longtime outstanding wary conflicts in the southern parts of the country.
Which in facts, its continues fights between the govern and armed rebels fighting for the'r self determinations and the rights of people to elect freely their representatives of both in two level parliaments, locally and federally. plus freely to administer without any interference their their local governments and not to spelled of what to do the local affairs of southern kilils.

So,hopefully Melse and his regime were enough matured and understanding well of what is the right steps so,lets expected too,the positives to resolved our southerner wary flaming regions of Ogaden, the Ormos and the benshagelo regions to wrapped up the conflicts going on in all those areas of rebels fighting's and to reach a quick and a permanent resolutions to avail a unity and prosper Ethiopia in future generations.

As everyone in the world knows it is not an election that will go on in Ethiopia but a tyranny.

Meles is an old communist dog who will never learn a new democratical trick, a respectful way of living for himself and his fellow human being.

Meles grew up worshiping tyrants, and communism, snatching people’s life and property by force.

The only way to challenge Meles is when Ethiopians rise up together and force him out. He is not an election or a democratic material. He knows nothing about humane rights, freedom and so on.

No person should wait for election to go on but a blood shed from Meles or victory for Ethiopians once they throw him out by force.

Our Ethio has no shortage of educated people in every field of studies in Colleges and Univercities. So why is our Ethio still in a mess?

I believe our College and Universities do not teach the following:
- critical thinking
- the importance of caring, loving, helping/supporting others--their society--their people
- problem solving skills
- communication skills
- people skills
- grasp the main idea or message and retain what has been read, heard or told
- how to give and receive accurate information about any thing etc. etc
- visualizing an outcome of a business or other occurrences or their own action they take

Consequence of lack of the above:
1. Public servants hinder society's prosperity or our country’s economical growth by abusing their power, arresting the educated ones, by being obstacles for business people by making stupid and greedy rules, taking years to make any decision and years of delay to give license-
2. We see and hear disrespect to each other, hurting others feelings, awful and ugly insults to each other etc. Why do you think some of our people do this?
3. Empty pride, feelings of I know it all, I am important than any other person kind of thinking, looking other people down, breaking up friendship, marriages, etc. etc.

How come our Colleges and Universities did not teach our graduates the following:
- how to follow instruction throughly when carrying out certain tasks. eg. too many dangerous errors in our health care workers
- how to pay attention on materials presented or work to be done
- how to think and find solution for problems that might come or already came
- how to be creative using skills learned from college or University and find ways to improve our people's way of living
- how to think and try to invent new tools and equipments for our farmers who are for centuries suffering with back breaking work but very little result. Where are our various Engineers on this?
- to try to get out of poverty by using any existing resources and opportunities found

- Why our agriculture graduates who work with farmers did not teach and show farmers to plant vegetables in their yard to support their families food intake? Why are our farmers let to suffer with malnutrition while they have all the resources in their hand?
Year after year in poverty and famine–never ending....

How many of you think what I said above is true? What should do about?

Terrorist TPLF used Hailu Shawel, Bedru Adem and W/ro Tigist to destroy what is left of Kinijit after the terrorist TPLF was forced to release Kinijit leaders from its dungeons. Terrorist TPLF used its mouthpieces (weekend talkshows) in diaspora especially in the U.S. The mouthpieces of the terrorist TPLF in Washington, D.C. metropolitan area include Mirchawu's, Negussie Hode Meragn's and Selam radios. Especially Mirchawu's and negussie's radios play bad cap-good cap on the diaspora Ethiopians living around D.C., in the U.S and around the world. Their main mission entrusted to them by the terrorist TPLF is to play bad cap-good cap and confuse the diaspora in order to break tha backbone of any viable opposition as soon as it appears on the horizon. Their main job for which Mirchawu (aka Amtatawu) and negussie get paid by the terrorist TPLF is to prevent any viable Ethiopian opposition (any viable threat to the terrorist TPLF) from gaining any strong foothold in the diaspora and divide and weaken their support or potential for support. The terrorist TPLF pays also for their air time. One pulls from the right and the other from the left with tha same goal of confusing the diaspora and destroying the opposition. Mirchawu plays good cap and negussie plays bad cap on the diaspora. They work together hands in gloves. They broadcast from the same station and share their air time without even any attempt to hide it. They also defend one another from any attack from the audience. By playing good cap especially Mirchawu tried to destroy Kinijit. It also tried to destroy the OLF, EPPF, AAPO, AFD, Ginbot 7 just to mention a few. The current mission on which Mirchawu is working hard to destroy is MEDREK. The good thing is more and people are getting it. Ewunetu

It sad that you have thrown your humanity out the window. Regardless where these Ethiopians came from abroad or with in Ethiopia--the 450 who have been arrested are the bravest Ethiopians who were ready to stand up against the most brutal dictators in the history of Ethiopia. Knowing the records of Human Abuse of Woyanes--these brave Ethiopians who risk their lives to serve their country and the people deserve our support and appreciations, definitely not your undeserved criticisms!!

You never stop to amaze me, what progress are you talking about? The progress of Mekelle and the economy growth of Woyanes? The progress of the recent starvation in Ethiopia? Or the empty high rise buildings in Addis owned by foreign investors?

Addis by Night
2. The only surprise, and a very pleasant one at that, happened during my flight to Nigeria. Having taken Ethiopian Airlines, I had to switch planes in Addis, and had a 4 hour layover from 11pm to 3 am. I had been advised by the Ethiopian Embassy in Berlin that, despite the fact that I would be travelling on a German passport, I would still need a transit visa for my layover in Addis due to the fact that, according to my passport, I had been born in Asmara. I had been furious when they told me this, it seemed so senseless, especially taking into account the irony that I was actually born in Addis, and had an Ethiopian passport for 17 years of my life. Considering this, and that fact that I would be arriving in Addis in the middle of the night, I had no hopes of seeing any part of this city where I lived till I was 8, and which I had last seen 7 years ago. While in Frankfurt, my mother had mysteriously announced that someone would be meeting me at the airport in Addis, and I had wondered who this would be – I was told the person would recognise me. So imagine my surprise when, having gotten off the plane and just joined the immigration line at the very nice, new Addis Ababa International Airport, a man in uniform comes up to me, asks me my name and tells me that I do not need to go through immigration, he would be taking care of me. The various officials at immigration winked us through – no checks, nobody even looked at the transit visa that had pissed me off – and the man invited me for tea at the duty free shopping area. It turns out he knows my mother’s family very well, is a distant relative, and has a high position in Security at the airport. We chatted for a while, and when I told him how long I had not been to Addis in, he asked me if I would like to see the city. Before I knew it, we had simply driven out of the airport, and he took me on a half-hour tour of Addis-by-night!!! I could not believe it – the whole time I was imagining how I wished my parents – and especially my mother – and my sisters were with me. At that time of night only night watchmen and an unbelievable number of ladies-of-the night and their clients were out, but it was till great to whiz through the streets with the sweet smell of the fir-tree hedges in my nose, a scent that brings back childhood memories I did not know I had, going down Bole Road, where we used to live, seeing the countless new buildings, construction sites and good roads that testify to an economic growth rate which Eritrea can currently only dream of. The gentleman drove me back to the airport and asked if I wanted to wait for my onward flight in the VIP lounge reserved for heads of state and first class passengers, but, although flattered, I told him I wanted to look at the several duty free shops where I had glimpsed lovely scarves, and the kind of books I would not find anywhere else. Leaving me in the care of a junior security official, he went off to resume his sleep. What an experience! I was even allowed to take a picture of the airport for my mother, and told various confidential info on the security measures of the airport (ever wondered why at some point there were several reports of Ethiopian Airlines planes being hijacked – mostly during internal flights, but once in the Comoros, where the plane crash-landed and Mohammad Amin died among several others – and then no more hijackings? I know now, but my lips are sealed). Anyway, I managed to exercise great discipline and bought just two books and a traditional t-shirt, planning to splurge during my layover on the way back.

Woye Ethiopia, your own children killing you
