Renowned singer Tewodros Kassahun, aka Tedi Afro, was released on bail Saturday afternoon after being held in detention by Police since Friday morning for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident.

The detention followed the death of 18-year-old Degu Yibelte on the night of November 2, 2006, on Taitu Street that leads from the Grand Palace to the Sheraton Addis.

Police sources told Fortune that a man claiming to be taxi driver called the police and gave the plate number of a BMW that had allegedly caused the accident. A car with the same number later collided with a concrete barricade in the CMC area near Lucy Academy. The sources said that the car was registered under Tedi Afro's name.

Tedi appeared at the municipality court near Mexico Square on Friday, during which police requested extra time for investigation, which was granted. After passing one day in custody with the Addis Abeba Police Commission, Tedi Afro was released on bail for 50,000 Br.

The deceased was a street dweller who had come from Gojjam to live with his uncle, Tamiru Terefe, in the Shiro Meda area in Kebele 18 of the Gulele District. His blind uncle told Fortune that Degu moved out to live in the streets after the two disagreed over the young man's drinking habit. Tamiru said that Degu still continued to visit him once or twice a week after they had separated.

Tamiru and his family learned of Degu's death late Friday morning. They collected the body from Menelik Hospital and buried it at Kuskuam Mariam Church in the Entoto area. They begged for 300 Br to cover hospital, transport and burial expenses, according to Tamiru.

Sources close to Tedi said that he denied causing the accident, saying that he was not the type of person to hit-and-run. The Addis Abeba Traffic Police Main department has declined to give any official information before the investigation was completed.

A source in the department told Fortune, however, that there was no evidence pointing to Tedi. The source said that police were trying to find the person who claimed to be a taxi driver and tipped the Police about the accident; Police hope to elicit useful information from that source.

The Ethiopian Criminal Code says that a driver who hits a person to their death and drives more than 15m will be considered to have committed homicide.

The singer has released three albums and a number of singles; he is known to address historical and political issues in his songs as well as love.

Accidents do happen so this doesn’t necessarily make Teddu Afro a bad or a good person. Hit-and-run, on the other hand, is a serious crime anywhere in the world.

Perhaps, Teddy was just overwhelmed with shock and nervousness at the time.

I’m always rational though I sometimes use strongly worded comments. And even then, its only becasue I got triggered by some typical diasporan's irrational comments in this forum.

But the bottom line here is, that I don’t think Teddy is any better or worse person because of this accident. Teddy may have fatally run over somebody but it was unintentional. Accidents are punishable only by traffic law and not by criminal law.

On the other hand, I don’t know how the ----hit-and-run -----factor will affect his case.

The next day, they took him to court, but they did not bring any evidence to back up their charge. The judge thus promptly released Teddy on bail and gave the police until Wednesday to present their case. Yesterday, Teddy went to the court, but the prosecutor and the police were unable to produce any evidence. The judge didn't have any choice but to dismissed the case. Hey, dont put words in other peoples mouth. I havent seen anyone saying Teddy can or should get away whatever crime he committed. We believe that NO ONE is above the rule of law, and in a free nation that includes leaders and every single citizens. However, in a nation where the government kills innocent citizens in a broad day light for demanding the respect of their constitutional right, such kind of criminal allegation and defamatory accusations on a popular individuals who openly criticizes your failed political system neither can be trusted nor deserve the benefit of the doubt. There is no doubt in my mind that you woyanes are trying to frame him so that you can lock him behind bars. Amazingly enough the conspiracy that has been formulated by one of the idiot member is absolutely rubbish and definitely fits the recent publishing by the japanese doctor that is Ethiopians average IQ is 63. Thank God that he hasnt seen this, given that wasnt true he could have said the average is 10. If you insist about the respect of law and holding accountable those who perpetrated crimes, lets start at the top, from the peak that order was directed to excute close to 200 innocents with in months. Isnt that more important for the nation than cheering countless lies to fill your elastic belly? Hodam!

When laws are set, it is supposed to be applied with no exceptions. As far as I am concerned, no one should above the law including prime ministers, ministers, students or any fellow citzen for that matter. The only question that I have is, are all under the law or is it only to use some as a scape goat and judges them unfairly.
