Parliament in Ethiopia reelected Girma Wolde-Giorgis, 82, for another six year term. The presidency in Ethiopia is largely a symbolic office with little power.

"Girma Wolde-Giorgis was chosen as president to run the country for the next six years. He received 430 votes with 88 votes against and 11 abstentions," said Parliament Speaker Ambassador Teshome -Toga according to AFP report.
President Girma Wolde-Giorgis was born in Addis Ababa in December 1924. He is a married father of five children. Girma first attended an Ethiopian Orthodox Church school and later joined the Teferi Mekonnen School in Addis Ababa where he followed his education until the Italian invasion. Then he studied at an Italian school "The Scuola Principe Piemonte" in Addis Ababa.

Between 1950 and 1952, he received certificates in Management (from Holland), in Air Traffic Management (in Sweden) and Air Traffic Control (in Canada) under a training programme sponsored by the International Civil Aviation Organization. Girma Woldegiorgis speaks many languages fluently. They are: Afan Oromo (Oromiffa), Amharic, Tigrinya, Italian, English and French.
