Parliament in Ethiopia reelected Girma Wolde-Giorgis, 82, for another six year term. The presidency in Ethiopia is largely a symbolic office with little power.

Girma first attended an Ethiopian Orthodox Church school and later joined the Teferi Mekonnen School in Addis Ababa where he followed his education until the Italian invasion. Then he studied at an Italian school "The Scuola Principe Piemonte" in Addis Ababa.

It is shame for the Ethiopian parliament. It lookslike childeren's game. They know that he didn't do nothing for that country as a president. Even if they(the parliament) reelect this "Ajuza", he better say no. but he doesn't have mind. "ye milushin balsemash gebeya balwotash". I proud not to be his son or family member.

Simply -- what a disgrace? Don't they have at least someone who can walk around? No, I am not against him because of his old age or disability. It just seems like an insult to the people albeit -- he has nothing to do and they might as well put him there.

This is totally the manifastation of woyane's ignorance and lack of respect for ethiopia and its people. Giving money from tax payers for someone who is unproductive and symbolic.

Actually woyane continuesly appoint such a kind of people like Addisu & Tefeera to a great post which required to high degree of learning and experience.

In general woyane is a nonsense and outdated party looking and supported by such people like the so called Giram....

What is called gime le gime abrehu azgim.

For the presidant say again and again bless my end....

It is not to discredit him. But I see that relieving him from responsibilities at this age was recognition of his service. I think that is his right too. Though I did not hear any explanation, I don’t see the need to bother a man at this age when we don’t have a problem of manpower. He has worked enough; it was time for him to rest and hand over the torch to more energetic citizens who could swim through the stormy waves of the sea of Ethiopian politics. But we don't need to be rude whether we like him or not. The adjective “Ajuza” is for a woman; not a man. Why do we go that far?

Bravo Mr. Girma, if you do not feel tired we are ready to use you. It is logical to have a symbolic man for a powerless position in the country. It may also cut cost since the government need not pay salary and other benefits for three presidents. Be advised that the government is paying Negasso (Dr.) for his post.

The endless lie, disrespect and doing the undesirable stuff to Ethiopians continues non-stop. Parlament did not elect Girma W/Ghiorgis. Elect from who? Who are the candidates? Meles's appointees? Meles just needed an over-weight Walrus, an amphibious mammal who has difficulty mobilizing it-self from place to place let alone think like a reasonable person. Woyanes are disgracing us and shaming them-selves. Surely they have a lot in their stores more disgraceful and appalling stuff for us. Thier disgust will never end until they are out of action.

That is right. According to some sources the Prime Liar had been busy contacting several individuals (including some well known citizens) to take the “job” the last several months. But all declined his offer (and may be gave him the middle finger after he left too). It is not at all surprising to see the size of Meles’s toy-world declining by the year.

What can the great ones do if their sons and grand sons generation is evil and insulting to a great man to whom the German Chancellor bows with respect one hand behind her back and the other shaking his . Silence is the remedy. If silence is good to the wise who speaks half a dozen languages, how much better it is for fools who can't communicate well even in one. Greatness seeks out the man who runs away from greatness. He who runs after power when some one is in power will die of a broken heart that causes disorder in all parts of his body. The President is a happy gentle teddy bear and is a man of a lion heart and strength and he will out live all of you cold blooded snakes who live half of your life in hibernation, smoking cigarettes, taking drugs and consuming booze. You fools, God created man on the sixth day, to teach him if he is swollen with pride, it can be said to him a flea came ahead of you in creation. He that laughs on his father or grand father deserves to die young for God is the alpha and Omega and never ages because he is love and he let men live as long as Methuselah just to show that there is nothing impossible for God to do. There was a king who cried to God and his life is extended for another 15 years, there are people that din not experience death, and many that are raised from the dead even in our time. Ask it shall be given, nock and it shall open, and seek you will find. If you have faith you could move mountains. The bad words you say to or about yourself or others that is what will come to pass in your life.

I hate wars for they only bring distraction and misery. But in this particular case, Ethiopia is left with no choice but to go to war to remove the Eritrean dictator who is a menace even to his own people. He is not willing to engage in dialogue in order to demarcate our borders, and he keeps encouraging rebells to wage war against Ethiopia. In spite of repeated declaration by Meles that Ethiopia wants to avoid war with Eritrea and instead would rather focus on fighting poverty, Isayas goes to great lengths to deprive his people and spend all his energy on destabilizing Ethiopia. What option does Ethiopia have?

A country controlled by bandits, thieves and dull people.

Unelected Meles and his inept dogs electing un inapt man. What a useless government!

They are playing their ignorant and idiotic game at the expense of Ethiopia.

Their election has no term limit and contest.

Meles is also in his making now how to inject himself in power for another term after 20 years in power. First as a president, then as a prime minister and after three years, he is in his monkey business to come up with another position without permission from Ethiopians.

All these useless dogs holding power by guns need to be thrown away from power.

Reelected at age of 82 for the next 6 years period, a man who can't walk, wheelchaired old man?
Is this the best PM Meles and his friends can think and provide for his government?
As a matter of fact,Meles can work only with these kind of individuals only. This man does not try to do anything at this age, He is a man waiting his death.

Actually not surprising at all, the whole EPRDF party is as lame and dumb as such! EPRDF is wheelchaired and does not have life as a party at all. All party members of EPRDF except TPLF are as dumb and lame as this man. That is the only reason why PM Meles accept them.

Yohannes,

I am not your errand boy to take your message to Ato Girma. He is neither my cousin nor my colleague. You better higher somebody else to serve you as a secretary. But although you wanted to say that he did nothing (in one of the sentences in your first message: “They know that he didn't do nothing for that country as a president.”), you said the opposite through the double negative “didn’t” and “nothing”. I do not need to appreciate somebody’s role in order to respect him. As an Ethiopian, I respect Ato Girma for his old age, though I might have not voted for him. I don’t want to comment on your justification for the use of the adjective “ajuza”. Though I leave that justification to the readers, I would not hesitate to tell you that I would comment on political views and positions; not on the physical appearance of individuals. Commenting on political views and positions of individuals is appropriate, while ridiculing their physical appearance is unacceptable because it is hate. Where are we from our cultural values and Ethiopian decency?

I don't know the election process, but this has the making of a rubber stamp parliament. How can a president be elected in just one day? No debate, no alternative candidates? No campaign?

If anyone thinks this is a real parliament, you gotta be on crack. Recall how long it took for the "people's representatives" to vote on the Eritrea border demarcation decision a few years ago.... Anyone knows?... The answer is half a day. Meles gave them his acceptance position on a Friday morning, in the afternoon, the bill was voted on and passed. No discussion, no debate... Stalin would be proud of his disciple.

Congratulation Mr. Girma for being elected the president of Ethiopia.
It is sad to have so many bloggers that seem to have negative views of this freat man. . Some are pure racist...when did it become a crime to be old to occupy any office as long as it is done legally? or being disabled should be a criteria to disqualify anyone from being a president; again, as long as it is done democratically.
President Girma seems to have a good and sharp mental ability bar his physical shortcomings. He has shown his understanding of the various diversities of the nation and not only that his ability to communicate with most languages of Ethiopia. How many of the current politicians could say about themselves in this regard.
He hails from the Heart of Oromo land ..to be precise ..from Bantu...a place he still visits and tries to help.
So guys lets be civil and give the man the respect he deserves.
To assume he is the main archtect of the political machinations of the current regime is to have no lateral thinking.

Cheers.

"The adjective “Ajuza” is for a woman; not a man. Why do we go that far?"

Then lets say "Ajuz".
The fact of the matter is that the guy is too old to be in that position even if he is just a symbol not a decider. Having said that it would have been easier to crown him and make him King and make the country ruled by monarchy but led by anarchy. Then again who knows his re-election could have resulted out of concern that he might get heart attack if he was told that he will vacate the Palace. Excessive consuption of Choma and Tej is addictive and Woyane is expert in hooking up others on that addiction where they completely sell themselves to its will. Lidetu Ayalew is a case in point - the Judah of Ethiopian politics. Surely, no one would expect this Teddy Bear like figure to play a role in the messy Ethiopian politics other than as an entertaining president the majority of "our Parliament" ever voted. We all long to often see him on TV - Oh! yeah, specially when we need some laughter that will make us forget so many of the evils the government brought upon us.
There you go! In a land of "Sibseba", the centurion will be a remedy for boredom to the Parliamentarians whose main job is "Sibseba, Sibseba, Sibseba".
What a day for the Ceturion! "Stay in the palace" is today's verdict.
To remain Statesman against all odds until the inevitable comes and a State funeral is organized, has never been tasted in Ethiopia.
The Centurion is the first and definately the last.

In my opinion, if some one like Mr. Girma who doesn't come back from and/or doing wrong again needs to be insulted for what he is doing not for his age or health.

Hey Lekim.

Good to see you my friend. With regards to your comment about cross eyed Hailu, I agree with you remember, he worked with Dergue, and that makes him my enemy, not friend.

With regards to the dead Kings, I have plenty I despise, plenty I adore. Haile Selassie for the former, and Menelik for the latter as an example. But the one King I admire most of all, Tsadeku Yohanes, what a beautiful Ethiopian, read the letters he wrote. Especially, the one to Menelik before he marched to Metemma, and his martyrdom.I, unlike many in here, jugde our leaders not by ethnic or political affiliation, but their devotion to the country at large, full stop. Leaders always make mistakes, but those who realize mistakes, and change them are the wise ones who do good for themselves and the nation at large. A case in point is, Siye Abraha, who used to be one of the most hated leaders in the TPLF. But today, except very few die hards, the overwhelming majority of Ethiopians do not hate him no more. Not because, he was imprisoned, or he had a fight with Legese, or he hand out some cold cash, or he lead the Ethiopian army against our worst enemies, the Eritreans. But because he repented. Not some fake Kutta worn for new year, not this and that PR control. Not lower taxes, or some cool land handout for returnees from abroad. He made a genuine repenting, the exact words were "ye lelawunem hazen le megenzeb cheyealhu". The day I read that, my entire thought of him changed in a second. Now if a true Democratic election ever come to this troubled nation, I will even cast my vote for the man. I leave you with a nice poem about my hero of Mettema.
