Ethiopia - Prof. Hussein Ahmed of AAU passes away

ENA -
Professor Hussein Ahmed, who served for a long time in history department of the Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia, passed away at the age of 56 on Sunday.

Born in 1945 E.C. in Kalu Woreda, South Wollo Zone of Amhara State, the late professor Hussein attended primary school at Etege Menen School and then he joined W/ro Sehen Secondary School where he completed 11th grade.

Scoring outstanding result, Hussein moved to the then Beide Mariam School to complete secondary education.

The late professor obtained his first degree in history in 1969 E.C with great distinction, which enabled him to be instructor in the university.

Hussien did his masters and Phd in 1974 and 1978, respectively at Birmingham University, England.

According to his life history AAU sent to ENA on Monday, the late Professor contributed a lot in teaching and research works. He got recognition particularly for his research on Islamic history of Wollo . He published a book and over 35 research articles which helped him to obtain his professorship from AAU in 1995 E.C.

The funeral of the late professor took place later on Sunday at Kolfe Cemetery in Addis Ababa in the presence of families, colleagues and students.

The late professor is survived by his wife and four children.

Dr. Ahmed was a quiet and reserved professor whom I found him a passivist. As a person from Afar region, he hardly talked or discussed about the plight of his people. Personally, however, he was a wonderful professor who cared for his students. I know the History Department, particularly Dr. Tesema Ta'a, will miss him a lot. By the way, what was the cause of his death at this /young/middle age? Alah Bless His soul!

He should speak out when people of his background specialy his islamic roots are touched. Being a professor in Ethiopia is just publishing papers and little is known about contribution to community works. Has he exposed the plight of muslims in Ethiopia? Not that I know of. Life is too short may be he thought he would have a longer life. Being quite has advantages when only you want it to be in a slavery. I am not for rebellion but it should be clear that he like many of us are afraid of dying on our own terms. Ethiopuian muslims are like second class and I blame it on us not on those fanatic chrisitians who claim that orthodox is the only official religion. He is nice only to please them. Educated islamic scholars are the most coward of all only foolwoed by educated christians.

nazret.com is my favorite place where I entertain myslef_learning how much I'm IGNORANT of so many things. After all many "EDUCATED" INDIVIDUALS LIKE THIS ONE are always glued to their pcs to enlighten us.
Dear educated msulim my self [Visitor] :
Did you try to check the deceased's papers?
I think the community you have in mind is on another planet. Are you blaming the professor to send his works to your IMAGINARY Comunity?
Why didn't nazret.com photo of the professor? I think that's appropriate...
My condolence to the deceased's families and to his admirers.

I am forced to leave comments twice for a cause. My current comment is directed towards people who post comments that do not make sense. Here we are supposed to show sympathy but we capitalize on grievance and criticism.
We need to forward condolence but we look reckless...it is shameful to having my people posting such a comment. Better never than something that does not make sense.

If some one passed away or waste his time without doing what we expected him/her doing, just learn from the ''mistake'' and start putting your effort towards filling the gap. A person can not do everything. Being a prof does not mean thinking or working like a magic thing. There are issues on which every one concentrates...there are only 24 hours in a day to do everything for a person. We need to share responsibilities. There are more than 80 million people in Ethiopia. Excluding the teens, if we all divide job and be responsible for a ''project'', there would be less job left undone if not none at all.

I would not be wrong if I guess that people criticizing a late person here are losers....did not do any of their assignments. I am not from AU nor know the person by any means but my understating from the post of mindful people is that the late person had done his part...In general, my people!!! lets think, write and check what we wrote before hitting the send button. I love all.

"The Muslims of Wallo in particular posed not only an obstacle to the establishment of a religiously homogeneous society, but also a direct political problem since "… they constituted practically a foreign state in the midst of the Christian heartland ... not only were they actively engaged in the propagation of Islam but were also persecution and forcibly converting the local Christians"

"In the spring of 1881 both Yohannes and Menilek overrun Wallo. In November 1882 they left Boru Meda on a campaign against the Muslims of Qallu who had fled to the lowlands and, having marched as far as Dawway, they returned to base after two months, i.e., in early 1883. Many 'Ulama' of Dawway were killed in the course of the resistance against imperial campaign. Among them were Shaykh Abbuye, a son of Abba Assiyya, Shaykh Habib, Shaykh Muhammad Bashir and Shaykh Ahmad Din. All these prominent leaders of the local Muslim community died on 24 Muharram 1300 A.H./ 5 December 1882. In early 1886 about 20,000 men and women who had refused to renounce Islam were massacred on the plain of Bakke in Qallu.

I am really sad by the death of Prof Hussein. I know Hussein work . Hussein was not a great talker but his judgment has been sound and concrete in all his writings. I have seen comments from some of the participant s in here and it shows how debased are some Ethiopian intellectuals. Lately in Ethiopian macadamize the mark of an intellectual has been his ability to agitate and raise emotion. he should steer problem and make insults. and say everything that this or that group is oppressed. This is indeed a sick mentality. Being intellectual means being balanced and following the fact. Hussein was like that. The a mark of intelectualism is not agitation but opening a discussion, looking for interaction and see how reality is more complex than political activist are trying to portray. Sadly we have lost a Professor who embody these characteristics. There are many claims that he has not spoken for his people . He has in fact but in a very intellectual manner. Anyone who has read his book on wello will see it. The best place to see Hussein balanced judgment is in his review of a book entitled "Islam and his Enemies in the Horn of Africa". From the outset he question the word enemies and say Islam relation in Africa is not only marked by enmity. This i s the kind of judgment that is expected from an intellect and not a narrow emotionally driven discussion. May God bless his sole. Allah yerkhmu ya Hussein

Dear Shegaw - Yayew Hulu Yidenekal,

I am not attempting to undermine the paternal love you (or anyone else, for that matter) hold naturally. However so you might not have wanted it sound, I'm sorry to express the sense of disgust I felt by your uncanny comparison which not only is out of context but immature, inconsiderate, and irresponsible as well.

Just for your curiosity, although there exists no single reason to make a shoe shiner (or in your own words, a “Listro”) lower or inferior a soul to, for instance, a Professor, a "Listro" (as you have rightly put it) shines externalities (just a shoe and short lived) while a Professor (as the late Professor Hussein Ahmed) shines internalities (that transcends ones very soul and lasts long). Another reason: a Professor is capable of mastering the skills of a “Listro” within minutes and can shine ones shoes, while thoughts of reciprocity (i.e. “Listro” learning all there is to learn of a Professorship in even a year) is like dreaming the age of the dinosaur (i.e., never); and so on. To satisfy your curiosity(as I felt you seem to need it), substitute the “Listro” for your barber who just gave you a nice shave and hair cut to make your (external ‘skull’) look good ("shiny") and compare that to a Professor who brightens whatever is going on inside your skull to make your life “shiny.”

May Allah/God place Professor Hussein Ahmeds' soul in heavens and bestow his families, friends, and admirers with the serenity and strength they need to overcome this testing moment.

Prof. Hussein was an accomplished historian. It will be great loss to all Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia. Prof. Hussein’s research and write ups, focused on the coexisting dimensions of the Ethiopian heritage. Only few historians and scholars tackled the element of tolerance as Prof .Hussies has accomplished. His assertions were all documented and void of “afetarik” or made up history. His scholarly journals described the history of Wollo including the legacy of the Wollo culture. I am not Wolloan or never visited wollo but the Wollo oriental fukara tradition reached all over Ethiopian and beyond. The etymology of Wollo traditions:
Examples:
Ansha: originally Aisha
Muhe: Mohammed
Kesde: Kesada
The most beautiful wollo recitation selawat al Nebi
Prof. Hussein commented on indelible mark of orientalism Islam and Wollo. The wisdom of learning and understanding in the wollo tradition such as Zekir, Tefsir, Tertib, Tillawa. Wollo was the learning center of Sufism parching love “Muhaba” and the Fukura” learned man” traveled great distance from Wollo to Wolita touching the heart and the mind of people with tolerance “saber”.
The most distinguished ability of Prof Hussein was laying out all the fact that a student or reader makes a sound decision or understanding of Ethiopian history. Prof. Hussein works were never to achieve personal glory but for the love of his community, country and culture.
Prof. Hussien was one of the few Ethiopian scholars that can engage the learned mind with ability to think in larger historical paradigm. His writing always kept readers to question own misconception and to distance from undocumented history “Afetarik”. Prof. Hussien will be greatly missed by all around the world.
Prof. Hussein the brilliant and loved historian, May Allah gives you eternal peace.

That, my folks, is one of the MAIN reasons our country is 3rd World. In case you wondered.

Instead of deeming yourself 'educated' and in the same sentence misspell words, just enroll in a school and educate yourselves. Learn manners along the way too!!!!!!!!
