Ethiopia ranks 120th in global corruption index 2009

Ethiopia ranks 120th in global corruption index 2009

Ethiopia still remains to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world, according to the latest survey by the Berlin based Transparency International (TI). The survey ranks Ethiopia 120 out of 180 countries. Ethiopia has improved in the corruption index since 2005 but the country was seen far less corrupt prior to the 2005 election by the TI survey. In 2002, Ethiopia was ranked 59th with an index of 3.5.

For a country to improve on the corruption perception index, citizens need to believe that "they have a government that works for them", according to Robin Hodess, Transparency's director of policy and research. The governments have to show "that there is the political will to respond to the needs of the people," Mr. Hodess added.

Somalia ranks as the most corrupt country in the world and New Zealand as the least corrupt.

Unformatunatly, the report is not far from the reality.
Ethiopia is corrupt because there is nothing done about it.

Example: In france there is a judge called 'juge d'instruction' specially designed to sue on ruption affairs.This
judge is the most independant judge you can imagine.

In Ethiopia, the Federal Anti-corruption Office is attached to the prime - minister.
In there is no political gain for him to sue someone, he has no incetive to do it.
That's why the last corruption case we can think about is Seye.

That is why France is by far less corrup the Ethiopia for example.it is not about the people.It is about the system.

I had a chance to review Midrock and its sister companies (including Sheraton Addis) balance sheets. Almost all showed loss. And yet Mohammed Al a moody jumped in world riches people rank. It is the way the system is set up. There is no check and balance and the people should ask their govermnents for accountability. It doesn't matter who started corruption, the point is that it has paralized many african states and is a cause of many ills in the system.

If you want to lie, please make it professional. The balance sheets is not the financial statement to be consulted for PROFIT/LOSS, it is rather the P & L or the INCOME STATEMENTS.

I am not saying MIDROC never reported a LOSS, but ... any way what were you doing when you were given the chance to review MIDROC'S BANANCE SHEET? Were you an auditor, anti corrution comission investigator,IRS or what?

Just to give you Acct 101 tip, BALANCE SHEETS is a financial statements which shw the financial position of a firm at a given specific date, where as the P&L is a financial statement which shows the operations results (PROFIT /LOSS) during a given period of time.

I never new that was truth until a family member went back to Ethiopia to set up business and was draged under and robbed to be able to start his business. Many from front door to the one sitting on the desk to stamp take portion and by the time everything is okayed then the money runs out and many people came back.

I have close friend who happen to be from North let me tell you all he took is Degree in Business and then he got the money and he got hired as an agent in tourism and now he walks on the sky! The TI's Director already warned Westerns who were proud enough to say their countries are less corrupt that corruption in Africa are due to transnational companies (none of you will tell me those TNCs are from Africa). Another feature to consider is to check criteria on which TI bases its index. Be polite and use convenient language if you respect yourself. We are not the worst in the world, we are the results of what have been done, said and brought to us. We need to react but show we are not the salvages they think we are!!!
