Ethiopia records deflation for third month running

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters)

deflation

- Ethiopia has recorded a third straight month of deflation with an annual negative inflation rate of 4.1 percent in September on falling food prices, the government said on Tuesday.

Inflation in the giant Horn of Africa nation hit a high of 64.2 percent in July 2008 driven by record high food and fuel prices, but has fallen every month since.

"The main reason for the decline is the fall in the prices of food components, especially cereals," the country's Central Statistical Agency said in a statement.

"ETHIOPIA ONE OF AFRICA'S BIGGEST POTENTIAL MARKETS WITH SOME 80 MILLION PEOPLE,IS DRAWING FOREIGN INVESTOR INTEREST IN AGRICULTURE, HYDROPOWER,AND OIL & GAS EXPLORATION."
When ever the value of one country's curency grows that is the sign of being on the right track with positive outlook.so far EPDRF GOVT has done good job to bring down the inflation rate.despite all the obstacles we face from outside and inside with man made or natural mishaps, the Ethiopian govt is by far the best choice we have for our future.they have been tasted and proven to take us to the next level in our fight to elimnate poverty and hinderance once and forever.

LOL.
Woyane's dumb math. So why is Meles killing 9 millions or 6 millions in his count Ethiopians?

The only sharp dicline under Woyane watch is people's income, food, hope, liberty and freedom.

I have seen this move played before with the same ending. This does not jive with the miserable life Ethiopians are living day in and day out. True, some governments do massage their countries economic data for obvious reason. But the economic data that originates from the Ethiopian government has been so absurd that it insults our ntelligence.

The devils are on the details!
Prices going up 64.2 % and then going down 4% percent don’t mean food prices are cheaper than what they used a year ago!

just like a used car sales man jacking the price of car 64% and then giving you a 4% discount!!

We ought to differentiate the bogus statistical data from the hard working and competent statisticians who work tirelessly under difficult circumstances where their final products have politicians fingerprint all over it.

STATISTICS COULD BE A LIE UNLESS...

Statistics is a premises with possibility of a lie as an explanation for occurence of an event: in this case fall in inflation. When statistical figures are reported they should be supported by a ground work, something tangible, to interprate and aviod the role of a lie/false interpretation.

Such a report therefore has to be taken with causion particularly when it is being used by unreliable sources: THE EPRDF GOVERNMENT.

I thought that deflation is as bad as inflation, if not worse. Deflation is due to the absence of capital (money) and credit, which means less buying power of citizens and of course less economic growth (economic depression) . Naturally, the law of supply and demand will bring down prices as long as there are no buyers.
Here is a good chance for our economists to teach us some economics.

the pumpkin heads of Abay Tigray know jack shit about deflation. At one point you here them saying the economy is growing @ 12 - 15% per annum and now they tellling us they are experiencing a deflation. For GDP to grow at such high rate and at same time bringing inflation to its lowest level in inconcievable to high school economics let alone the vast public. If GDP is growing at that level then prices must be high to support that growth.

May be the rest of Ethiopia is subsidising prices in Abay Tigray.

As Ben Disraeli/Mark Twain put it: there are "lies, damned lies, and statistics". As noted by Visitor1, I gather that the stats presented are sequential month over month data, on a annualized rate, which can easily interpreted to be the inflation rate for the whole year. Misleading unless I am missing something myself.

The other counterintuitive fact is that food price would be declining in a time of famine. If buying power is not declining (remember GDP in Ethiopia is growing by leaps and bounds according to the TPLF) then limited supply would mean a hike in food prices. Or I only know freakonics ;-)
