Ethiopia - Road signs to ease city navigation

By Elias Meseret

Source: Capital

The Addis Ababa City Roads Authority (AACRA) is erecting road signs over the 33.3km ring road, major streets in Ethiopia's capital and exit roads from the city.
Fekadu Haile, General Manager of the Authority, told Capital that the project was previously planned to be carried out with the construction road.
The signs are being erected by CRBC-Addis, a Chinese consortium, after it won the tender the authority floated in 2007.

“This project is implemented with an outlay of 17 million Br. Totally, 340 signs will be erected in the areas that we have identified so far and we hope it will be completed within this month,” Fekade said.

In addition to signs that show where roads lead to, some of them, especially the ones located on major avenues, will show distance in kilometers to a nearby place. They will also incorporate traffic signs installed in places where there is heavy traffic congestion.
“We have installed 150 signs so far. When all of them are installed, it will greatly benefit the city’s dwellers as well as foreigners who like to know where roads lead to,” Fekadu said.

He concluded saying the signs were manufactured in China.

I can’t not express my happiness for this to happen as me and my family were a victim of a horrible story on my recent trip to Ethiopia. After coming back from visiting someone’s home (Lekso) in a dark and because so many roads were dug up for construction we ended up on this ring road only to find ourselves going round in circles. You might not believe it but it took us three and half hours going in circle and getting lost in every direction. Thank God we meet a police officer who was searching those big lorries coming into town and directed us to the right way. Some of you might say how one can be lost in Addis but where there was no sign all you do is going round in circle without knowing where you are and where you were going. I still have the expression of three girls face when we asked them which way is to Mexico Adebabi? For them to scream and tell us we are actually getting into Sebeta and told us to go back to the direction of where we came from. The other funny thing was there was this big truck broken down in unusual way in the middle of the road and you will never believe how many times we passed it. How that happened I still couldn’t figure it out. At the time it was very very scary and annoying to the extent that we were all arguing and shouting at each other because it was dark and our car was not so reliable does not even show how much petrol we had left and we had elderly people in the car and on top of that for me it was only my 2nd day in Addis. I remember my elderly mother praying and saying please “Gebremenfeskidus do something”. All I am saying is this is a very very good news for those who live in Ethiopia and visiters.!!!!

Whatever.
These signs were designed by CRBC for someone who has an urge to stop by to any close by church along the ring road for prayer service in case of emergency rather than to a nearest Hospital along the road.
By the end of next rainy season, these mad in China signs will fade away, knock down by strong wind or our inexperienced truck drivers!

First of all I would like to congradulte the AACRA for making this happen. I'm delighted and proud to see the positive impact that will have for Ethiopians as well as visitors. Having read some of the comment it is very frustrating and demoralizing to here that some people still complain about how the words are small and we spend too much money. One thing we must understand is we don't have the manufacturing and resources to be able to manufcture this road signs in Ethiopia. Otherwise we could have done it without having spend that sort of money to other country. In other word, if we wait to do that we could wait forever. Please let us be reasonable & Constructive on our criticism. Love to all Ethiopians Tigi

What is good for the gander is good for goose!

The locals city dwellers, local public buses and tax operators, and the local authority know the local name of every part of Addis Ababa even without the street sign. The lack of street signs in this large cosmopolitan city used to take a long time for a foreign or visitor to master and navigate independently in the city. And this is probably what kept the city safe from the enemy for centuries. But, with the introduction of street signs, people like Al-Shabab and others may now find it easy to navigate through it at ease and play their deadly hide and seek games in the city!! Think.
