Ethiopian skier Robel Teklemariam trains on the street of the capital Addis Ababa Feb. 3, 2010. Ethiopia's only Olympic skier wheels down a suburban Addis Ababa street on his roller skis, expertly weaving around six donkeys and drawing stares from locals more used to watching runners train. Cross Country Skiing
Dachhiri Sherpa of Nepal (R) and Robel Zemichael Teklemariam of Ethiopia (L) lift Danny Silva of Portugal (who came last in the event) into their arms after the three crossed the finish line and finished in 92nd and 93rd and 95th place respectively out of 95 starting competitors in the men’s 15km Free Cross Country competition at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, Whistler, Canada, 15 February 2010. The race was won by Dario Cologna of Switzerland.

Ethiopia - Robel Teklemarim places 93rd in cross country ski event

Ethiopia's lone Olympian, cross country skier Robel Teklemariam, finished 93rd out of 95 skiers yesterday, completing the 15 kilometer course in 45 minutes, 18 seconds. He improved on his time from the Turin Olympics by two minutes against a tougher field.

Teklemariam's family was on hand for the competition. His mother, Yeshareg Demisse, runs The Nile restaurant near the VCU campus, which serves Ethiopian food.

This was the second Olympic Games for Teklemariam, who finished 83rd out of 99 competitors in 2006 with a time of 47:53.

Switzerland's Dario Cologna finished in 33:36 to take home the gold medal.

Italian Pietro Piller Cottrer won the silver, finishing 24.6 seconds behind Cologna, and Czech skier Lukas Bauer won the bronze to go with the silver medal he won in the 15-kilometer classical style race in Turin.

Robel Teklemariam, congratulations in bettering your time from the previous Winter Olympics. With many Ethiopian youth in North America and Europe, you have inspired more Ethiopians to train to compete in cross country skiing events. Ethiopians are the Lions in long distance running, and can also be the Lions in long distance skiing. God Bless

Brother,

With all my respect for your idea of participation, your result is not satisfactory. You made history of representing our great country. Do you know what your result means for us if it was from running even the first time? He should not run here after period. You have one responsibility now. Before killing the moral of all Ethiopians in this sport, please start training some youngster Ethiopians and you make them ready for the next competition. Write about winter Olympics in papers and the other sports Ethiopians can participate for the future. I am not looking a result from you. Representing the country without any real goal isn't going to help. You can create our Abebe of winter Olympics, and Ethiopians are eager to see that person.

Robel,

I am proud of you. You have inspired the young generation of Ethiopians.

I think, with in the next 3 Olympic events (12 years), Ethiopia will be in the top 20 countries in cross country skiing if enough support exists from the people and the government of Ethiopia.

Look who was the dead last country: Danny Silva of Portugal! This guy is from Europe, yet he was dead last. So, Robel's achievement is fantastic.

I plan to attend your party at the Vancouver Ethiopian event:

3rd from last? you should get a medal for that and they can name the medal "EZNORB" I mean Bronze (written backwards). You are still a winner Robell as you are the only one who came from a country which does not have Snow or any facility for ice scating training. So, you have done great any ways, the biggest achievment is you Finished the race. So, do not get disappointed because those who won the race were born in ICE from a frozen sperm, raised in ICE and trained in ICE, so they have all the odds of winning the game. They are "ICE ICE Babies"

What Robel is doing is nonsense. He is nonsense person. How come on Earth this stupid person is trying to get fame in Ethiopia with his little skill of skiing? Nonetheless, this person reminds me of the tplf mafia who are ruling Ethiopia just with guessing! Where in Ethiopia is a winter producing ice for inspiring Ethiopian Kids? This man was trying to convince people that Abebe Bikila ran bare foot in 1960 Olympics to get the first Marathon Gold Medal by an African man. Robbie is a wrong person to mention a great Athlete for a fallacy conclusion. Abebe Bikila won Gold, so Robbie claimed he would be the first Ethiopian to win Gold in skiing. What a fallacy! You are wrong Mr. Robel. You better represent the area where you practiced skiing. You are a shame to Ethiopia. You don't deserve to get any seconds of News coverage. Ethiopian Kids can be inspired by Abebe Bikila, Mamo Wolde or Miruts Yifter who made excellent achievements of running which every person in Ethiopia practiced at least once in his/her life time unless disabled. Every person knows running, bare foot or with shoe. But skiing is nonsense under Ethiopian Condition. It is only in the mind of Robel and his kinds. Of course, the tplf mafia is famous for disseminating daydreaming inspiration to Ethiopian kids. That is why I say tplf is killing a generation.

It's one thing to say, kudos for participating, but it's another thing to come out and praise a loser!

You're all a bunch of liberal wussies who praise and enable losers. The guy came in 93rd out of the total of 95 what is this praise?

Have you all lost your mind?

If your child goes to school and ranks 93rd out of 95 students while preparing himself for a life of flipping burgers, would you say " Oh bravo, boy! You are #1 in my heart?" Maybe that's why Ethiopians are not faring well because of this culture of enabling losers.

After all the hoopla in VC this person being received as a hero, 93rd? C'mon he should be ashamed of himself and never show his face in public again.!

"..for those who complain, lets see you stand on ice for one second!!"

Sim yelesh, you've just nailed it!

Its easy said than done: judging Robel is easy but just give it a try and see it for yourself. Maybe within a blink of an eye 'addame tefetifiteh tirisihin sitilekim tigegnaleh'.
So, wegen, lets try to appreciate and lift LEADERS like Robel Teklemariam. The history of great contributers[leaders] to our world is a proof that success doesn't happen overnight. These leaders failed, and failed, failed again..before they became sucessful.
You're one of a kind, Robel. I respect you and the family who raised you with a transformed mentlity, such as introducing a new sport in a culture that has vowed to bond with the ancient. This is the beginging of a journey, not the end. Choose to celebrate each step.
As for me,
I just found myself a role model!
And I mean it.
