Ethiopia Ruling Party Denies Opposition Imprisonment Claims

By Peter Clottey
VOA News

05 November 2009

In Ethiopia, the ruling Ethiopia People's Revolutionary Democratic Front says it's unaware that hundreds of opposition members have allegedly been jailed ahead of next year's election.

Opposition parties accuse the government of jailing at least 450 of their members to prevent them from running as candidates in next May's general elections.

They say the imprisonment is part of the ruling party's strategy to claim a landslide victory in the vote -- a charge the ruling party denies.

EPRDF spokesman Seku Toure said that the opposition parties have yet to present grievances through established channels.

"We don't have any information about this. If any party has got any kind of issue regarding this they can present to the EPRDF. We do have a common council of the four negotiating parties. We have agreed to review any kind of allegations and give some kind of remedy for that," he said.

Toure said the ruling party will support an investigation into the opposition's imprisonment claims.

"Yes for sure. If you have seen the code of conduct it says that if there are any kinds of allegations, any kind of abuses, all political parties including the EPRDF have agreed to investigate and take measures about them," he said.

Seku said the code of conduct agreed to by all political parties will ensure a level playing field ahead of the elections.

But Bulcha Demekssa of the opposition Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement stands by the allegations that hundreds of opposition members have been jailed.

"The government always denies everything. They even say that there is nobody in prison for political reasons, but this happens every day in rural areas. They put in jail anybody who does not readily join their party or anybody who does not go to their meetings. Anybody who is not buddy- buddy with them goes to jail," he said.

Bulcha laments the arrests have affected opposition membership.

"As a result everybody now says he is a member of the government, practically everybody and the government claims that they have four million seven hundred thousand members. Of course this kind of membership is not obtained through just persuasion. You can be sure everybody is afraid not to be a member of the government," he said.

The government says the opposition's claims are meant to discredit the electoral process, fearful it could lose the 2010 elections.

Political observers surmise the ruling party is poised to easily win next year's vote despite an expected challenge from a number of lesser-known opposition parties.

Despite what they claim it business as usual painting the government as they used too just to grab the power by propaganda. But EPRDF should be strongly stay on its rule until the opposition parties accept EPRDF's rule otherwise,Kality is not far from the corner.Yeha

Democracy what is it or how can we use it? What kind of democracy fit for our society and what should be the limit? Did anyone of you do your home work to understand it before we even attempt to open a dialog? It is like a calculus problem that you don’t know the proper formula to solve it. We will never solve the problem without the knowledge and willingness to pass it to those who can do the job right. As far as I am concerned I am not sure if I can trust opposition group too most have baggage take Hailu Shawl and likes. There few but overwhelmed by opportunist and big mouths.

YEHA:
Any one reads you comment will say how childish you are.

Let me break it down for you..
You said
"EPRDF should be strongly stay on its rule until the opposition parties accept EPRDF's rule otherwise,Kality is not far from the corner."

WOW! I guess the rull for Ethiopia is to bow down for EPDRF not to question not to investigate. Every time you and your likes say "Rule Of Law" but the rule of law only that works for EPDRF. Just remeber Siye case jugment was given from honerable judge but MELES EPDRF leader got involved and did what he wanted. Debela was surendered when asked but was sent free but when EPDRF found out his influence as leader then arrested and sentenced for 13 years just for politics then election 2005 was close by so re sentenced to make him out of the election. Yes, This is the RULE of law that we suppose to accept and abide with!
It does not matter which party brings a "Rule of Law" but if it was meant for all citizens so we should regard it but when it is only for EPDRF that is just not fair to 94% of the citizens. Meles claimed many times there is not political prisoners but time and time again it has been proven wrong, but we were told by you and likes to just shut up and listen to the EPDRF rule of law!

One day you and your likes will pay back ant I hope it is soon! People of Ethiopia got to rise and say enough for this childish costy came enough!

Rwanda killing did not just start over night it is leader like your Uncle who allowed it and we are not immuned when EPDRF is playing with law and life of citizens!

It is time my peopel to rise and say we are not running for election unitl listed people are released and walk out of the Parlament today!

What is the point bieng in parlament to clap for noncens that is going on! Why are we so complacent to accept such an fair treatement to most!

I hope you are a good hearted Ethiopian to really look back and question your conscious to do the right thing. You don’t have to defend the ruling part when they make a mistake… we all make mistakes also, there is always a room from improvement. We all are not perfect. Let’s just play it fair. It’s one thing to be passionate about politics but, hate mongering and intimidation has its own risk. We are in the same place generation after generation because of this kind of pettiness. Every Ethiopians: individual, organization government or privet trying to come up with some answer to resolve many issues we are face in 21st century. This kind of madness will not going to help us but, instead it will divide us. Each one of us carries patriotic love for our beloved country in our heart. Sometimes, even our leaders out of frustration and for immediate change they say wrong things. Please continue playing hard ball to lead our country to the right direction. As the election approach let’s heal our wound and coexist with out dirty game. Ethiopia Tikdem!!!!

Peter reports "the government claims [to have had] four million seven hundred thousand members." That is to mean party members. Why does EPDRF choose to recruit such huge number of people within a short period of time? Some might argue it was planned to thin out potential members that the opposition parties strive to bring to their fold. That might, I believe, be part of the answer. But the real motivation might go beyond that assumption: to sow distrust among people so that in order to be not left out behind-- being a member might have a real or at least a psychological benefit than not to be- eveybody rushes to the rescuer, which happen to be EPDRF. I do not think-- they should think better than that-- EPDRF might boast the number of the new recruits validate the party's popluarity. In fact, the rush to register anyone who is breathing as EPDRF member germinated after the 2005 election, which verified, even to the propagandist like Berket, who had been overconfident of burying the opposition parties hope in that election, the unpopularity of EPDRF. Any genuine party that has the interest of the people and the country might wish to learn from that election, and try to learn what the people needs are. No one who follows EPDRF's politics closely, however, believes that to happen. EPDRF's bible is not going to change because people are unhappy the way things are. No, according to EPDRF know-it-all, you compelled them, not persuade, to believe in that bible with a tacit suggestion failing to do so might not be in the best interest of any person. Well, thanks to the new coersion, it does not matter if one graduates with higher distincttion from a university unless he signed the paper EPDRF are handing over around, and be a party member. A student who signed, who barley graduated, might have been offered employment than the outstanding student who chose not to sign. After all do not forget still the major employer in Ethiopia is the government, so people are being kept capitive to their basic need.

It makes me laugh my head off when I see some ESL level students call Bereket stupid. For your information he was one of the brightest sudents in the 70's. It is one thing to expose his atrocity and denounce his malicious deeds but it another thing to call him stupid.

If you have a doubt about this guy's intelligence you can ask Dr. Berhanu Nega.

Any way I hate Bereket for orchestrating the 2005 massacre of Addis Ababa, and I recently started to suspect Hailu Shawel was also one of the architects of the then genocide.

The bottom line, Bereket is not stupid but he is Shaibia's agent appointed to kick the ass of "adgi" Amharas(AM SORRY THAT IS WHAT THEY CALL YOU IN TIGRAY AND ERITREA)..lol "Adgi = Ahiya" that is mean..you Tigraways and Eritreans are mean ..

These thugs are compulsive liers that have no moralty and dignity.

Liar Meles, Bereket and the whole TPLF idiot groups don’t know that leadership is a sacrifice to serve and not an opportunity to rob the public.

Because Meles’s tight grip on power for 20 years has served them to fuel and “legitimize this plunder”, now they don’t even flinch when the lie roles out of their mouth.

The only right way is to stand united and force these thugs out.

=>Enough with Meles!! Enough with EPRDF!!

I couldn't understand why you Amharas are crying all over the cyber space. If you guys have the spine, go ahead and fight Woyane, don't deafen us with your irritating chant. I am sick and tired of vociferous Amharas, seriously. Your politcal approach towards woyane sukcs. Yes it does!! If you claim to be patriots (who defeated facist Italian -that is what you say not me) act like one on woyane too.

You guys are sitting back on your comfortable chairs and expect woyane will be deposed by some miracle. If you have the guts to fight, go ahead and do it, if not keeping quite is another option. There was no dictator in history deposed by articles on the cyber space. Get of your bu... and claim your freedom or keep your mouth zipped. The longer you keep on chanting the more the poor Ethiopian will suffer under the tyranny. Your chant doesn't do any good to the poor, it is your action which can bring about change.

It always makes me wonder when politics became a profession of idle vagabonds (DURIYES) in DC.

This is woyanees wishful thinking; they must have count the whole population of Tigrea--what a shame!! There is no way, the whole province will be on the side of a regime that is responsible for the loss of so many innocent lives and human abuse.

Well, the whole truth is that the opposition have 75 million members--how about that, woyaneeeeees!!

The Woyane government have a lot to hide and they have to lie, deceit, fraud and human abuse=Dictatorship.

Hey satenaw,
why don't you try it yourself instead of insulting your own people? since when can be Amhara grab the gun and started fighting? never in history. Yes, the skinny leg Tigrayen did that and they won for many occasions.

Take for example,Woyane has won within 17 years of destroying half million Dergue army which the biggest army in African history.

Guess what how many fighters woyane do you think had then? may be 20-30 thousands of fighters when completely liberated Tigray in 1998.

Me too i watched the meeting of the parties on the draft code of the election conduct and it is really surprising what Medrek is asking, how came they insist on having a one to one negotiation with EPRDF or else they are not going to participate on the discussion on the draft code?

What is the riddle behind to this perssistant demand of one to one negotiation with EPRDF or no participation position of Medrek? I am just wondering what is the issue Medrek will negotiate if permited with EPRDF without the participation of other parties? What is the important issue Medrek have different than other parties want to negotiate it secretly with EPRDF?

Even though i was unable to speculate what are the issues behind Medreks request of a one to one negotiation with EPRDF but it is clear the outcome of the discussion in which Medrek refused to participate will be binding on all parties including on Medrek.

But it took you less than a month to take over Ethiopia. Does it add up?
NO!

This is what happened in real term!

Brave Woyane or Tigray got fed up and started fighting for freedom and equality but it was tough Going! you must admit that! Then Eritraia joined your cause where by that time and the war got in your side for little, but one more than that all Ethiopians were fed up with Mengistu and Military was discouraged due to aimless war! The people in Wello, Gojam, Gonder, and many fallowed you fighting the govenment at list you got a pass no war untile you got to AMBO where you had few days of it ..
That is it and please do not claim you "Tigray" people are brave but the rest of Ethiopians are loosers!

Stop that nonsense!

It is idiocity and very child like when you spread such a lie and brag for something that is not true!

Again hats of for those who started the war and and equaly for those who opened a way and some who joined your cuase to defeat Mengistu!

It is rubish! Yes you think this way but one day when the clock stop for you the war will start from re ot or corner of street and people will chase you out or arat killo for your ignorance!

Those who know him during the military struggle say that he was a brilliant military commander and politician, After the downfall of the Dergue Mr bereket Simon is engaged in peacefull political struggle challenging the opposition forces. he has served his government and his party with dedication. Those ragtag opposition of the toxic diaspora will continue to defame him, anyway who cares as to what is being said by the opposition. Bereket is walking the walk and the opposition can talk the talk for decades to come. Those of u who think the EPRDF has no public support need to wake from your deep sleep. I am one of those ethiopian who support the EPRDF, who ever visit areas of Afar, Gambella, Benshangul, and other regions could witness lots of development. We will support a developmental government. Those supporters of the Dergue and rascists can go to their nearest hell. Some extremists are opposing this government because of its tigrean link. Tigreans are proud ethiopianns and will continue to play cruciall role in Ethiopia. Afterall ethiopian history started in our northern regions. Satenaw... what are you? Eritrean, Tigrian, Gondere, Oromo... Palestine? since you brought up the race card, I thought I should ask. I will tell you what I am. An Ethiopian and a proud one at that but Mixed allover. As there are no neftegans anymore, and I am not a durye from DC, the term is used as a means to segregate the opposition and make it look bad just like diaspora, as was the term Amhara used by shabia to mean you know what. So, in the term you and shabians use it, it means anyone who stands for the unity of Ethiopia. Is it your intent that Ethiopians should not voice their opinions when they are unable to do much more at present? Is this like a gag order that you expect all to shut up unless they go back?

It is important to remember that a dictator is not so easily removed because he kills all who come against his ways. As one who is against any form of armed uprising, I will continue to oppose from the comfort of my home in LA. Cal. Does that make me a neftegna? If so catagorized, what are you satenaw?

Satenaw, such a nice ethiopian lable. Do you know what it means? reminds me of that song... "satenaw hameta bezabegn... by kassa tesema, I believe he was called.
