An exclusive report on the supposedly model African state, where human rights abuses have continued to grow since May's controversial elections.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has, until recently, been regarded in the West as one of a new breed of African leaders - picked by Tony Blair to draft his Commission for Africa report on how to reduce poverty and promote democracy on the continent.

But a European Union report due out shortly is expected to pinpoint serious irregularities in last May's disputed elections, which were followed by the arrest of Zenawi's political opponents and mass detentions. 23 opposition leaders now face possible treason charges. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Channel Four News, Meles Zenawi has defended the actions of his security forces.

My applause to Mr. Inigo Gilmore, presenter of the article. If it had been at a place where democracy is at least in its middle age of crawling, more applaud. If it had been at a place where fear of unlawfulness due to high unemployment rate is minimal, more applaud. If it had been at a place where opposition parties knowing or unknowingly did not inject chaos, more applaud. If it had been at a place where security men/women equipped with modern anti-riots equipment and well trained, more applaud. It is just all ethnic hate politics. It is extremely sad. When in the developed countries people from all the corners of the earth live side by side in peace, we are tearing each other based on to which ethnic group we belong.

Ethiopians, if you really consider yourself to be Ethiopians why not fight for the only thing that brings us all together, which is individual right. If an individual is free, the whole country will be free.

Ethnicity and religion should not be involved in politics. Ethiopia has people from various religion and ethnicity. That is fine. However, if we start to organise politics based on ethnicity, then we are in serious trouble. We will start to find superficial differences (like language, religion, place of birth etc.) to divide people. And these will result in hatred and conflict between people belonging to different groups.

Look at the USA. People from every country of the world live peaceful, free, and prosperous life. Why don't we try to implement this social system that has proved to work not only in the USA, but also in Canada, Australia and Western Europe?

Dividing people according to their ethnicity is not good for Ethiopia. It just brings conflicts, hatred and disintegration of Ethiopia.

A country is for all, but religion and ethnicity is each individual's.

If individual right is respected, each individual will live a free and peaceful life. That is what all of us want, not this primitive ethnic politics that is being forced on Ethiopia by the weyane junta.

I’m taking the day off from my ‘paid-EPRDF-cadre’ job to observe the National Neftegna Appreciation Day. It is a very special day indeed that we should spend with our Neftegna counterparts whether it is your spouse, child, friend, or parent.

Sometimes, it is even possible that the whole family is still a Neftegna while you’re the only one cured. As for me, my girlfriend is a Neftegna, my child is a Neftegna, I used to be a Neftegna, my table is Neftegna, my dog is Neftegna and even my car is Neftegna!

How to Observe the National Neftegna Appriciation Day in 10 steps:

1. Stay home and spend time with your Neftegnas. Call all the Neftegnas you know and thank them for anything you can think of and buy them some gifts!

2. Don’t argue with your Neftegna spouse about whether the Ethiopian flag is made out of rag! If he/she says that it’s made out of plastic, then its plastic!

3. When your Neftegna spouse takes too long on the toilet, don’t disturb him/her. Though this is their favorite time of the day to plan the next strike, demonstration, etc, give them a break since its Neftegna Day. On the other hand, I suggest that you not visit that restroom for the next 45 minutes or so. Especially if they had had some Kitfo or Kurt!

Why are TPLF sympathizers always putting all legitimate opposition under the CUD umbrella.
This is not only about CUD vs EPRDF (TPLF and its surrogates), rather

that it enjoyed considerable success enough to be called the largest opposition and
gain some respect internationally. It is in the same boat as the other opposition groups. The
only crime that the entire legitimate opposition is guilty of is that it does not
operate at the whim of Meles and TPLF.

If one does not jump when Meles barks, to use a mild term,
then one is labeled as "neftegna" or "yeneftegna teketay" and an outlaw. Folks like
Abera Demeksa (see earlier blog message) should know that, regardless of its surrogate organizations and
its efforts to portray itself as the one that brought freedom to the people of
the different regions of the country, the current rogue TPLF leadership is the ultimate
neftegna of all times. And the OPDO, ANDM, and other puppets of TPLF are the ultimate
"neftegna teketays". The Tigrean people are as honorable and oppressed as the rest
of the people in the country. I know because half of my heritage happens to be from
the Tigray region.

My sympathy for those who lost their lives but I have no sympathy at all for Hailu Shawel. Other CUD leaders should have the spine to comfort Hailu Shawel.

Inkich you did mistake,great misunderstanding about Weyane actions.
Would you please tell me the benefit of joining parlament for the Ethiopian people.

For TPLF it definetly use as a mask to cover the naked body
( ditatershipb behaviors) of Meles regime.

Let me recall you one fact when OLF had been joined TPLF parliament in 199- , TPLF did kill a lot of Oromo People in cauntryside of Oromia region, closed offices, terreized people etc. If CUD were joined the parliament the same thing would have happened to CUD members and supporters.

What Hailu Shawel did is he sacrified himself before the death of his members & supporters.This is what expected from real leaders of party.

Meles stand at the back of our brothers; Tigrians farmers ,he sacrified the soul of poor Tigrians for sake of his Authority in the name of democray. Now poors are died but no democracy excercised in Ethiopia.If those poor farmers of tigrign alive again Meles would has been in jail but he is in palace.

4.a skillful opposition leadership does not call names. It does not take actions, which will give good legal reasons for the government to crush it. Everyone knows the women in the Ethiopian folk tales who was able to have a lion friend. The women did such a brilliant job because of skill, patience and perseverance. They say they were compelled to organize such a meeting at the Sheraton to hammer out issues that despite differences along political lines, Ethiopians should not fight over what is best for the country.

like i mentioned earlier Jambo, your narrow views about the current stalemate in Ethiopia warrants further clarification. Today, there is no Oromo, no Sidama, no Somali, no Tigre, no Amhara, no Gurage BUT one ethiopia. Well Termosse, Do we really want to dwell on the past or do we want to move our people forward? And why say the last 120 years? How about the last 3,000 years starting from the time of Axum.
We live in different times, different political frameworks, different environments and global underpinnings. Throughout history, the light did not shine upon the Ethiopian people. It is true that the EPRDF allowed the first elections to be held in our country. However, what we want to analyze is why they didn’t follow through with the democratization process. As a result, TPLF’s reaction is suggestive of one or two things: Maybe they were so ill informed as to think that the Ethiopian people would elect them or they thought the Ethiopian people would not show up to vote like they did in previously held so called fake elections. In my view, it is premature to give TPLF the credit for allowing the Ethiopian people to vote and consequently express their views. We have to understand that in order to fatten their coffers with aid money, the TPLF had to fulfill the will of the west for Ethiopia’s democratization by promising a free/fair election and inviting observers from donor countries. Although a far fetched rule of law has been preached, the only law that exists in Ethiopia today is the law by the gun to the benefit and survival of TPLF and its sympathizers. The truth will set the Ethiopian people free and that day is very soon.

The Government Security forces are conducting house to house searches and arresting those men and women suspected of sympathizing with the Opposition party and as collaborators. He jailed over 100,000 men and women through out Ethiopia. Since the May 2005 Election, at least 5,000 innocent citizens are killed and over 200,000 are jailed nation wide. Especially, many Amharas and Oromos are being harassed and sent to hastily constructed prison camps, which are infested with Malaria,cholera & all kinds of infectious diseases. Some prisoners have started dying from these diseases. Many more have died during detentions. Most of them died due to trauma, inability to take their medications and inappropriate diet. i.e. this is true with those prisoners with diabetics and cardiac conditions.
I am very disturbed and moved by the NO ACTION policy of the Ministry of Education Administration and the Dean of Addis Ababa University and other Academic Institution officials. The Dean was supposedly sympathetic to his students. Sadly, however, he did not act the right way. He kept silent when innocent students are gunned down right in front of his eyes. Peaceful demonstrators are shot in the University campuses and other educational institutions as well as in the street of Addis Ababa and other major cities through out the country. The death and wounded toll is increasing day by day. Yet there is no official response from the so called higher education institution policy makers. This was more so when it comes to Dean Indrias Eshate. But what do we expect from a Homosexual pro Melese Gay politician. Dean Indrias Eshate have never been a parent by birth and is not expected to be sympathetic to children or students.
We Ethiopians are born to suffer and struggle. This has been true to our high school and University Students. Through out the history of Modern Ethiopia, our academic institutions and their students with their heroic teachers have paid dearly in their lives to reach where we are today. We are making progress. Soon we will be liberated. We shall not only live in the Peace Republic but also have Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.

I was hasitating to insert my comment here, but I don't seem to escape the temptation. Just for starters, the main reason we're dialogueing here is to exchange information, positive info that is about our country. However, as many candid and honest ppl there are, there also are ppl that are of evil nature. To support EPRDF is not and should not be a crime; the same goes for CUD, UEDF, OLF etc. etc. All these are parties of vairous ideology. However, to support the wrong doing or criminal act of any party such as what went on and is still going on in Ethiopia by EPRDF is taking part of that criminal act. Many of the comments here are by ppl that are in the right state of mind regardless of the party they support, at least I'd like to think so. Some just take the advantage of the opportunity and just write hatred filled comments purposely to devide the various ethnics of Ethiopia. Let me tell you, if you go to Tigrai and check out the ppl of Tigrai for yourself, wether you're a tigrian, Amhara, Oromo, etc. you'll find how beautiful the ppl of Tigrai are in every sense of he word; the same goes for Amhara, Oromo and the rest of the ethnics in Ethiopia. That's what makes Ethiopia, Ethiopia. Just recenly in Malden, Massachussetts, a highschool soccer team filled with Eritrean, Amhara, Tigre, Oromo, Guraghe and other parts of African countries. The team won a tournament and made the headlines for it's achievement and shined America as a result. We can do this in foreign land and why not in Ethiopia? So often, it amazes me how ppl as human beings ignore their humanitarian nature give priority and talk about burning buses and properties when 7 and 11 year olds are being shot to death from a distance of 3meters/9feet? How could this government gathers ppl based only on their ethinic background and tell them that the other ethnic is out there to get you so watch out and get them first or stand against them? Listen to the various media interviews and you'll hear all this from experts of various ethnics including Tigrians. So if you wonder where some of the comments here come from, don't be surprised, you'll conclude that they come from EPRDF cadre's under the cover name of Oromo, Amhara and others. One thing you see common in all their comments is that they all write broken English, that you have a hard time figuring it out. They're practicing English taking the opportunity. So, my message for the rest of the commentators is to ignore responding back unless you find it constructive as they're purposely provoking us. Ethiopia was there for many centuries, will be there in the future. Ppl that care less of Ethiopia's integrity will have their time just like the ones they put them in jail. Just the other day a female bar owner was confronted by an EPRDF cadre who grabbed her by the neck and told her that she has to adjust to the way she looks at him. He told her that she is playing with death when staring at him the wrong way; and yet he's a customer at that same bar. I wonder how long this guy has set the time for him to live like that? I personally had an experience just yesterday where I had a flat tyre directly across the street from the main entrance of the Debrezeit Airforce while coming from Mojo. A soldier approached me with his rifle on one hand screaming I could not park here. I told him that it was not by choice and I have a flat tyre. He reponded that he does not know anything abt my flat tyre and I showed him. He crossed the street back to his gate and said that I needed to hurry. I said I'll try my best. He asked me what kind of response is that? I told him I cannot and will not say "Eshe gashe, Ababa or whatsoever..." I'm a US citizen and should you want someone to come and help, contact the Embassy or come and help... A horse cart driver parked his cart by the side street and came to help me. I told him that I've my passport as my cover, I don't want you to get in trouble so pls just leave. A minute later he was told by the same soldier to leave the premises and he did after I insisted. It took me 20 minutes and I left. I'm not being ethnical here, but the soldier who was on my case has Oromo accent. If it were a Tigrian soldier, I probably would not have been here to make my comment, dead or alive. Similar incident happened in the same exact place a little while ago to a white American and shots were fired that involved the US Embassy. Having said this, I'm married to a Tigrian and my children are Tigrians. So you can understand it's not hatred here, it's just how we are as ppl. Let's not be nasty to each other. Let's love and respect one another. I LOVE YOU ALL regardless of your poletical party preference.

I strongly believe that it is in your government's interest and in the interest of the population to honor the Ethiopian people's inspiration for democratic governance, respect for basic human rights in order to reduce conflicts and thereby improve the quality of life of the population. I therefore call on your government to expand democratic space and build fair and just society that allow the creativity and energy of Ethiopian citizens to flourish

Ethiopia needs pluralistic society where the role of independent mass media, viable political pluralism, functional democratic parliament, social movements is recognized in building a critical mass of responsible citizens, who help to maintain checks and balances in your country.

I believe it is the Ethiopian government full responsibility and duty o guarantee the safety and security of its citizen without which peace and development cannot prevail.

In order to create a peaceful environment and start to build confidence between your government and the population of Ethiopia, I call upon you:

I am an Ethiopian living in Australia. Life in Australia is free and prosperous, while in Ethiopia it is the opposite.

The fact is that I live a free and prosperous life in Australia not because I belong to the same race, or religion, or speak the same first language as its people. Instead, it is because my individual rights are fully respected in practice in Australia. People from all countries of the world live side by side a peaceful and prosperous life in Australia. This is possible because Political parties come & leave power through the will of the people, and political parties are not organized based on divisive group rights like race, but based on individual rights.

If each individual is free, the whole country will be free. However, where group rights come before individual rights, people who don't belong to that group but live in the same area will not be free. This means that the whole country will not be free. This is a fundamental truth. So if we want for all the people of Ethiopia to be free, fight for the supremacy of individual rights, not group rights.
I repeat: if each individual is free, the whole country will be free. However, we can not say that if groups are free, all individuals will be free, unless we restrict people to the place of their birth until they die. This is impossible in the 21st Century.

In addition, implementing group rights require superficial identification of people by race, religion, language or tradition, which is divisive and results in hatred and conflicts between groups, as repeatedly seen in human history. Please let us stop our trial and error method and stop causing any more suffering in Ethiopia. (If we have the interest of Ethiopia at heart!) Instead, as we use the technological inventions like electricity, medicine, communication & transport of the developed countries, let us also try to apply the political system based on the principle of individual right that has brought them freedom, peace and prosperity.

A government that kills its own people is worse than a criminal.Ayn Rand writes: "Criminals are a small minority in any age or country. And the harm they have done to mankind is infinitesimal when compared to the horrors – the bloodshed, the wars, the persecutions, the confiscations, the famines, the enslavements, the wholesale destructions – perpetrated by mankind’s governments. Praising of democracy and peace in Ethiopia should be one of the best strategy to insure security to support the advancement of democracy in Ethiopia in particular and in Africa in general. I personally respect any political organization that addresses Ethiopian fundamental economic, political and social issues. Any debate based on the reality of our society is healthy and should be encouraged. The debate, however, has to be honest, educational, and democratic meaning respecting other's view even when we can't stand it.
For example in the 1970's, 80's and 90's, all opposition groups work together for one goal and that was to bring down the DERGUE The now defunct defamed Socialist Military government. Although I disagree in the strategy and objectives of this movement I was part and parcel of that generation. We fought so hard to bring democratic changes in our Scotty. At the end all our effort was hijacked by Shabia and EPRDF. these Organizations were operating from two states but they one in their destructive and poisonous objectives. Their aim was to destroy Ethiopia.
The Tigryans and Eriterians looted everything including our political and civic organizations. For example all the files from the Workers party, national Congress, the President office etc. were moved to Eriteria under the dark skies. You name it they have done everything. If they use it alone it was ok, but they sold and gave it to our historical enemies such as the ITALIAN, UK&EU ISRAELIS and of course to the USA.
For most democratic and principal political organizations these was disappointing. Soon however the two Fascist States start fighting over the loot or the states they fake they formed. The whole world start laughing at them and Eriteria reduced to dust...village... and SHABIA and it's leaders start killing each other. To day no body cares what is happening in Eriteria and it is forgotten like Somali.
Back in the 1980's & 1990's TPLF & SHABIA Lleaders people like Berket Habtesellasie, Asmerom Leggese, Amare Tekle, Melese Zanie and Isaias Afeworke and HODAM AMAROCH such as Kifle Wodajo( all under the CIA payroll) launch heavy political movement both in Ethiopia and abroad particularly in Europe, America and the Sudan. For their propoganda a CIA sponsered two publishing companies, one based in London another one in New Jersey USA.The so called REDSEA press and the HORN OF AFRICA PUBLICATIONS NOT ONLY TO POISON ALL ETHIOPIANS BUT ALSO TO THE WHOLE OF AFRICA.
The objective was to fight against socialist or anti colonial movements in Africa and in the meantime to spread the REGAN DOCTRINE and to implement the IMF Structural Adjustment policy. Both the REGAN and IMF policies for Africa were created to destroy the BLACK RACE. The Ethiopian Socialist Party and the Mengistue regime were the first victim and D-Day for all the Ethiopia enemies.

Dear Ethiopians:
Look these people do not appreciate civility. They are selfish and arrogant. The only language they can understand is forces. We need to stand up, challenge them to listen and understand us. At least they need first to release all political prisoners in general and the CUDP leaders in particular. Second they need to sit down and negotiate with us.
Meles and the Weyanes are determined to kill all the OROMOS and the AMHARAS. Look what they are doing to our OROMO brothers and sisters in the East, South and western parts of Ethiopia? At the same time, be aware of what's happening to the AMHARAS all over Ethiopia in general and in Central, Northern and Northwestern Parts of Ethiopia in particular ? Since the May 2005 election, they have killed over 8,000 Ethiopians and jailed over 100,000 innocent citizens. Tens and thousands of prisoners including many young men and women are dying in their concentration camp every day.
To day in Ethiopia, if you are not Tigray or Eriterian, you are doom to be killed, harassment and jailing, This indiscriminate hate and killing have brought the entire country into total anarchy, death and dist ruction. The situation is so bad and because of violence and indiscriminate killing by the government armed forces, parents are forced, unwillingly not to send their children to school. These have gravely affected normal day to day life activities.
According to the U.S., Ambassador Herman Cohen, we are ruled by "a regime that reverses it's own repeated pro misses to promote Democracy with ought right killings to avenge its people is no different from a totalitarian dictatorship." This intensified harassment is not only discouraging people from peacefully undertaking their day to day activities and forcing them to consider other options, such as arm struggle as we seen it in IRAQ and Palestine and Israel wars. At the same time, all Ethiopians are demanding for the immediate release of their children and local leaders. It is incumbent upon the government to de sis from all violent means.
At the same time, there are Hodam Ethiopians or YEMURDENKOROES, who not only support Meles and the Weyanes, but also apologizes for their crime, death and dist ructions in Ethiopia? While I share their concerns and feelings, I dot appreciate their view of "peace or non-violence struggle." These is what Tigryans and the ERITERIANS like. They know how to divide & exploite us.
Ethiopia has been at war with itself for the last 50 years. Most if not all the leaders behind these wars are Tigryan and Eriterian intellectuals or , who simply sold their bodies and souls to foreign agents be it from Asia, America or Europe. They do not give a dam about the rest of Ethiopia. Throughout Ethiopian history, their leaders were willing to compromise with outsiders at the expenses of the rest of Ethiopia.For example, take, King Yohans the IV of Tigray, who died in the Sudan. He didn't die for his country or Ethiopia (as claimed in history text books,) he was killed by the Turks while he was selling out or compromising with British and other European forces. He was a sale out like Meles and all TPLF leaders. His grand son was a spy for the Italians and even his great grand children are the cadres of the TPLF and the Weyanes.

Why Do We Hate Melese, Woyanes?
As you could hear and see it in this forum, and in the daily news, Melese have declared war. and the Woyanes have started the killing field. You can see these with your
naked eyes. We Ethiopians are tiered of being cheated, exploited and manipulated by Melese and his burgeons Tigrayans and Eriterian elites. Most of them are confused, selfish, corrupt and do not give a dam about Ethiopia and Ethiopians. They rather deal, and trust foreigners. They proffer to be called Americans, Italians and Europeans. They are rude, cruel and have no national pride. They imposed the SUPERMACY OF ONE ETHNIC GROUP ABOVE THE REST OF ETHIOPIA.
Melese and his Tigrayan and Eriterian friends, became happier and richer at the expense our national and international interests .They loot Ethiopia in the name of TIGRAY DEVELOPMENT. While other Ethiopians become poor and poor Tigryans and Eriterians are becoming multi milliners and billionaires. TPLF, EPRDF and Melese as well as his wife have Bank account and houses all over the world. They have so much money and they do not know what to do with it. If we Ethiopians, get in trouble, they can leave Ethiopia and easily move to America, Canada or Europe and have a good life. Most party members including Melese, have moved out their families to these countries. That is why they continued to fight the opposition parties and undermining their leaders.They push on aggressions on all Ethiopians except Eriterians and Tigryans.They kept pushing for corrupt and ill social and economic development programs.
When it comes to power and democracy, Melese, TPLF, EPRDF, Woyane, Tigryans and Eriterians, would do anything to stay in power. They are determined to win Election 2005. Perhaps, the evidences are clearly documented by Journalist John Flemming.
.John Fleming seem to have a good grasp of current Ethiopia pole tics. He wrote to tell us how voting was conducted ed in remote Oromia villages.. He described how the ruling party use existing government apparatus to serve it's own interest. He also said that the ruling party quietly used the instruments of government to try to squelch the opposition He tells us how the "Kebele" (created and used by the Derg) are still being used to spy harass, intimidate and illegally imprison any one who does not vote for EPRDF and TPLF. Moreover, the Kebeles are used and exerted the ruling party's influencing the cities and the countryside by doing everything from having people arrested for various questionable offenses to extending and withdrawing credit and fertilizers to farmers. When these fail to work, however, TPLF uses the so called "the gott" and "the garee": Maoist organizations which are created below the "Kebele" and used to serve Melese and TPLF or the Woyane government. The soul purpose of these organizations are to kill those who oppose these governments and to encourage neighbor to spy on neighbor on behalf of TPLF and EPRDF. He concluded his report with an abrupt and rather sinical notes about the out come & the impact of the 2005 Ethiopian Election.
"Currently, most everyone is unhappy about the way things are going in Ethiopia.." The effect of all these will remains muddy...what is clear is that intimidation took place before the election. Human Rights Watch, in exhaustive study, detailed many stories of threats made to people." he said.

I am very sad dismayed by Meles's comment on political prisoners and their fate. the CUD Party leaders and Independent Journalists are to be charged. He accused them of treason and insurrection or violence against the state of Ethiopia. According to him and his constitution, they are to be tried in court, This is unjust and unprovoked call. In deed this will be a recipe for economic, political and social disasters. This shows how he is bad and undemocratic. These are heroic and popular leaders, who have only expressed their democratic rights. Despite all harassment and intimidation by the fascist regime, they choose political dialogue and respect the rule of law and all democratic principle,
They worn their followers to be peaceful and respect the law of the land. It is a shame and barbaric for Melese to make such baseless accusation. Ironically, however, it was the Melese regime which choose violence over dialogue. The opposition was provoked by criminal gangs led by a moron Melese Zenawi. With Meles's approval, the Agazi Army, Federal Police and EPRDF cadres, indiscriminately killed more than 200 innocent citizens including children, pregnant women and jailed over 100,000 men and women nation wide. many of those arrested had been beaten before taken in front of false witnesses. Troops and police are still spending day and night terrorizing the people by doing illegal search and going from house to house. Before they release their victims, they break the legs young men and women, so that they cannot walk.
Melese is a MAD DOG, who is bad and getting desperate. The only thing Melese and the Woyanas know is killing. Because they lost the 2005 Election in Addis Ababa, Woyane and Melese have GOONE MAD. Most TPLF and EPRDF Party Members and the Woyanes in Ethiopia and around the world are panicking, they are selling all their business houses and cars.They are withdrawing money by the thousands and millions from the Banks. They are looting the National Treasury and cashing on their properties. Tens and hundreds TPLF and EPRDF party members are getting ready to leave Ethiopia.
Keep your eyes open and be vigilant against the looting TPLF and EPRDF Members, Melese and the Woyane who are moving out their families from Ethiopia. Recently, Melese's family members and his DOUGHTER have moved to their Villa in Washington Metropolitan areas. Other Woyane Officials are moving into the USA in Masses and Denver Colorado, Maryland Washington DC, Virginia and Seattle areas are their prefer destination.
