An exclusive report on the supposedly model African state, where human rights abuses have continued to grow since May's controversial elections.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has, until recently, been regarded in the West as one of a new breed of African leaders - picked by Tony Blair to draft his Commission for Africa report on how to reduce poverty and promote democracy on the continent.

But a European Union report due out shortly is expected to pinpoint serious irregularities in last May's disputed elections, which were followed by the arrest of Zenawi's political opponents and mass detentions. 23 opposition leaders now face possible treason charges. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Channel Four News, Meles Zenawi has defended the actions of his security forces.

"The new breed of democratic African leader" This perfectly interprets pm Meles .people -please come to your real senses,don't bark like a dog with rebise.Ethiopia started a new democratic system ,no one on earth will set it back , let alone idiots out there blinded by hattred poletics who never know the real situation here .Even it is not fare to responed to you , b/c you don't have ears for other opinions .Anyway the rule of law preveals in Ethiopia , no one is above the low ,messing up this country in violence is barbaric , and never been alowed.During election irregularities could happen , it has to be corrected in a democratic and leagal way . The EU never said there was rigging in the election 97, and irregularities can happen evrywhere even in civilized west.
