'Ethiopia's economic progress good' -WB

Addis Ababa
- Ethiopia was making good progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and has achieved remarkable results in key areas, according to the World Bank.

The World Bank’s Africa Development Indicators 2006 report (ADI 2006) provides a detailed collection of data on 53 African countries using material from 1965 to 2004. It singles Ethiopia out for praise in key areas and gave the country a high overall rating. Improvements in education indicators were noted. In 1991 only 27 percent of Ethiopian children attended school, while the gross enrollement rate was up to 77 percent in 2004, before reaching 85 percent this month said the report.

The ADI 2006 confirmed that 16 African countries have has sustained annual GDP growth rates in excess of 4.5 percent since the mid-1990s. Ethiopia’s recent progress in this domain was underrepresented as the country has shown a rate of growth of about 9 percent for the past three years and was on course to increase this into double figures in the coming few years.

African Development 2006

Ethiopia was in the top category for “policies of social inclusion and equity” and also in the domain of “economic management”.

The report also stated that Ethiopia did exceptionally well in the domain of “structural policies” and “public sector management and institutions”.

In the section on “improving public sector management” the report stated that “the public sector is critical for good governance and development. To address existing dysfunctions in the civil service, countries are reforming the civil service with differing emphases”. The report added that this included decentralisation and capacity development programmes.

Regarding setting up a business in Ethiopia, the report stated that it took about 30 days to set up shop, but that there have been vast improvements in the past two years since the report’s research was concluded. Land for a business, for example, now took hours to acquire rather than days or weeks as was previously the case.

"While economic outcomes are increasingly diverse, Africa has made near uniform progress in social outcomes, notably education and health," explained John Page, the World Bank's Chief Economist for Africa, adding that the per capita income of African countries were now increasing in tandem with other developing countries.

"Gross primary enrollment rates as a share of the relevant age group - a standard indicator of investment in the poor - shot up to 93 percent in 2004 from 72 percent in 1990, contributing to a rise in literacy rates from 50 percent in 1997 to 65 percent in 2002," said Page. He regretted that success increasing primary enrollments from 70 percent in 1991 to above 90 percent in 2004 has not been mirrored in secondary and tertiary education in Africa.

EPRDF inherited the world's poorest nation in 1991. And now it has turned it into Africa's fastest developing economy.

This is something anyone who loves Ethiopia should be happy about.

Do you remember what i said? the country has been burried deep down in the past 100 years, but it is coming out of the ground during EPRDF. Keep on bringing the good news. I know it is a headache to oppositions but the truth will never stay hidden.

Go EPRDF!

How can they say there are economic progress when the price of teff, the staple diet of all Ethiopians, has skyrocketed to 500 to 600 bir? How can they say Ethiopia has made progress when approximately 90% of the population is complaining that the economic situation is worse than ever before? How can they say the economic situation has progressed when millions of people, except the Tigreans, are complaining they are out of jobs. Some thing screwed up.

We all know that the World Bank's statement is garbage because, for the most part, they are relying on the economic data given to them by the country.

This economic progress stuff is a lie given to the World Bank by Meles Zenawi and the TPLF cadres. We all know that this is just another lie of the TPLF regime. We do not accept it.

The World Bank and IMF are political organization known to serve the interests of the West, especially that of the US. They are famous for fabricating and, whenever necessary, inflating statistics. I tend to believe the HDI data.
I recommend reading the book "Confessions of an economic Hit Man" written by a former economic hitman John Perkins
As a test, an interview of John with the title “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man: How the U.S. Uses Globalization to Cheat Poor Countries Out of Trillions” is available (click here)

However, I do think that there was an economic progress comparing to the so called communist era, which is actually no miracle. A little opening is enough to score higher than Derg. I am not saying that there was no significant improvement; a lot more could have been done.

Peace

TPLF and Meles Zenawi,

We, the Ethiopian people, did not ask you for economic progress, if you ever had one in the first place. We Ethiopians want our independence first and foremast before economic progress.

All this economic progress stuff you are talking about, give it to the World Bank or stick it in your drawers.

All these meaningless economic statistics mean nothing to the suffering and oppressed people of Ethiopia.

The call continues, " LET MY PEOPLE GO!" Read your Bible to find out the consequences of not heeding to this call -- You will be devoured by the Red Sea!

woooo wooo, my buddy meles is getting early CHRISTMAS presents!!! lol

i like all of this, in addition to the freedom and democracy, the multiparty election and now with many opposition parties involved in parliament things are looking up for emeya ethiopia.

but i am not going to boast too much, or i am not going to shove this into kinijit's throat. we still need CUD. maybe not all of CUD's policies but berhanu nega's brains are very much needed if we are going to improve even more. but nobody wants the bagage CUD comes with. bagage means its racist, unity freak,eritrea-must-be-ethiopia stubborness, and the fanatic aspects and all. we hope CUD doesn't bring that bagage, otherwise we need CUD!

until something better comes i am still sticking with the CUD is our future statement.

anyway good job EPRDF, you certainly inherited a very low economy from mengistu so this economic progress might not look much, but for our poor people, anything is better that nothing.

CONGRADULATIONS MELES!!!!

keep your head up!
you are setting a legacy, only two more things are left for you to do, one is you should give majority of power to CUD, medhin or prefeble an oromo democratic party. second is you hand in your control over the army and federal police. after you do this and have a perfect transition on 2010, you will be a legend.

good job meles and co.

I think the world Bank has considered the huge amount of personal wealth of Meles Zenawi and his gangs in this statistics? That amount would really make significant change in the financial view of the country and may be it is this that gave distorted figure of the contry's economoy which is far from what it really is.

I believe institutions like WB and IMF know the personal wealths of Meles and his clicks because part of the money is from those institutions themselves. Further there is no doubt that some officials in those institutions also have got their share of the bread.

Seble,
Well said. Your ideas of an all inclusive power sharing is good but somewhere down the road hard choices have to be made. There reconcilable differences and then there are thos that are nor reconcilable or very difficult to reconcile. Let the CUD out in the cold. Only life expectancy can improve on these guys. They are too backward-looking and stuck in the past and therefore unable to cope with the present, let alone the future. OLF shall have to undergo some metamorphosis to renounce violence and the works of the devil, but nevertheless a candidate for inclusion. Anyone trying to dismantle our holy covenant, THE CONSTITUTION, will be disqualified not only by FIFA, but by anyone with any sense for fair play. Imaging playing football with rules. That is the chaotic, anachic, undisciplined, boisterous, irresponsible proposal of CUD. So much has been achieved in Ethiopia, so much so, it would crazy to be left to nitwits like CUD.

What parts of the regions of Ethiopia are included in this positive assessment of economic development? The assessment is telling the truth if it is about the Tigray's regional economic development. It is obvious that the tigrians are proud of their accomplishments, which is a recless abuse and exploitation of the resources from other parts of Ethiopian regions, and the redirection of those resources to their own. They have done what they have promised to do in their slogan when they were maneuvering to become the sole political power in the country. They benefited from ripping of every valuable possessions from other parts of the regions and smuggled them to Tigray region. I am still reminded by the slogan I have red just right before Mengistu was overthrouwn. I attended the tigrians meeting that undertook immediately before the London transitional meeting. I attended that meeting although I was not invited to it. The handout was distributed to everyone that attended the meeting and the handout was prepared in Amharic. The writing contained a puzzle when you read vertically from far left. The puzzle was a slogan that red as follows in Amharic:- "TIGRY ISKITLEMA, LELAW HAGER YIDIMA". I realized after reading that slogan a nightmare for the citizens of Ethiopia has just began. My friends who were part of the discovery of the puzzle did not think the slogan has a merit and would materialize to anything. However, as I started witnessing what was happening in Ethiopia, I began to believe that Tigrians were out to accomplish what they promised to do to the citizens of Ethiopia (outside of the Tigrey reion).

Sodo

There is a saying in French, it goes like this: taste and color should not be argued over. And if you come from upper crust of a society, money and politics should not be argued over either.

Taste is not something that is delivered to you on a silver platter; on the contrary it is something that you acquire as the days pass by.

If these sycophants of TPLF have preference of Tej and Tella over exquisite champagne or wine, it is their prerogative.

You have the gall to disdain their choice of beverages. May I ask you what is your preference?

What I wrote on my posting is that since Ethiopia is improving, as Esprit de Corps let’s us celebrate even the smallest improvement.

Improvements in education indicators were noted. In 1991 only 27 percent of Ethiopian children attended school, while the gross enrollement rate was up to 77 percent in 2004, before 85 percent this month said the report. prpgress begans with education great news!!!!!

Dear SELEME,

With all due respect Sir/Ma'm'

I know you tried to make some points here, especially, how burdonsome the payment of interest on loans spent on non-productive ways could be for future generations. So your view is not bad. But, I tell U, you wordings are so terrible. Please use amharic next time.

hey chistaw,

I think you are right. I don't know why we want to look cleverer than we are. Why don't we say nothing? That way no one will know how stupid we are. TEMESGEN if my country is a little richer. Well done to the people of Ethiopia. But by God we need to do a lot more than we are, both at home and abroad if we are to really prosper. And take our own responsibilities in our hands.

Abamagal,

When was the last time you were in Tigray(Tigrai)? Why don't you talk about something you have some clue about?

I toured most of Ethiopia a year and half ago; by comparison, Tigrai is one of the least developed provinces in the country today!

dear DAGU BAHE

All what u said about is really appreciable and noticable. we all have to make/use democracy as our culture and accept it as a road map to our change .
Thank u again DAGU BAHE !!!
As far as still the majority of our population is living under poverty line, we have to give a special attention for increasing primary enrollment rates as well as higher level with other development sectors .
To make this all effort successful, there should be mutuall understanding ,consensus and tollerance . we dont have to blame each other. we have passed all the century blaming each other. This is the time to woke up and achived what we have dreamed.
thanks..

We know that IMF & WB could easily be runned by corrupt people, and hence could have been lobbied by the tyrannical govt, in order to help change its worst image as brutal, child and pregnant women killer and robber of the nation!
There is no sugar coating;
You have massacred tens of thousands of people through-out your 15 years of merciless ruling of the country and beyond that!
What about the blood you spilled in Gonder? What about the massacre and raping helpless women in Gambela and else-where?
What about the people you have murdered mercilessly in all other regions (Awasa,Jima,Harar,Addis)etc. You want to cover this gross Human right violation and Genocide with just false statistical Data?
Is that “YELIJ CHAWETA?”
This reminds me our games of child-hood:When some elder children lose their games, they used to say to the younger once "chahewataw fursh new Beyen amta!",so the helpless one
gives back what he rightfully (according to the Game's rule) acquired.

My advice is:
Stop murdering Ethiopians
Release the all unlawfully detained prisoners,
Respect the people’s democratic rights,
Bring the perpetrators of genocide to justice!

Ethiopia shall prevail!!!

Thanks for cheap shot Mr. Demeksa. My remarks were based on factual information and substantiations that I presently obtained. Okay, you toured most of Ethiopia a year and a half ago and discovered that Tigray region is one of the least developed regions of Ethiopia based on your account. To the contrary, I obtained my information from an outside visitor (non-Ethiopian) who just returned from the tour of Ethiopia as well. He made far different assessments of the places he visited than yours. The two desired places based on his account are Mekele and Wondo Genet. We know that Wondo Genet is a known special tourism attraction site from the beggining and may not be development targeted site by the current government. So, what is happening to the resources that are being illegally disloged away, of course, unless you are trying to sugar coat things in an attempt to cover it up for your favorite gang leaders.

That's what is wrong with you people. You let others do the thinking for you.

Find out for yourself instead of latching on to "he said, she said" !

Given the chance, You diaspora critics will give anything to leave for the U.S.

DON'T BE SO QUICK TO JUDGE those that live abroad. There are some bad ones and good ones too you know.

It is the Ethiopian feeling in the heart that counts where as an Ethiopian-born person's foreign citizenship status is just a technicality stated on PAPER!!

What gets me the most is the hypocrisy. Meles banned dual citizenship when he himself holds three of them!! You do this to keep your options open when you actually have the least "Ethiopiawinet" in you than anyone in the diaspora, MELES!!!

peace
