Ethiopia selling its land to the highest bidder- Washington Post Video
The Washington Post reports that Ethiopian government has set aside roughly 4 million acres of land (6,250 square miles), which is roughly half the size of the state of Maryland or more than the entire state of Connecticut, for lease to foreign investors.

Governments across Africa are leasing land to foreign investors who use it to grow food to compensate for their own deficit, or for export. Officials in Ethiopia hope that the investment can help improve agriculture, replacing ox-and-plough with tractors, but some are concerned about whether the deals benefit the lessors.

Have Your Say

  • Who are these "investors"?
  • How many Ethiopian farmers are being thrown away from their livelihood?
  • Where is all this land located?
  • Is anyone listening to Ethiopian farmers?
  • Is Tigre land on Sale too?

Well, I am not an Economist or a farmer. But it sounds giving away land for forigen investers seems a tricky move.Soon the land and wealth of the country will be owned with few hands, who happens to have money in one way or another.

In Addis alone people built houses with millions of dollars. some of the houses they built maches the price here in the west and even more. They happen to have money through corruption and bribes.

The poor farmers are begging on the streets of Addis after they sold their land with pea nuts. The future of traditinal farmers is going to be the same.. the Arabs and who ever got the money will buy/lease ,,what ever..then the poor farmers will soon be working as slaves on their on lands. In a country where there is no minimum wage/salary and where people are working cash in hand for years...the poor remains poore and gets exploited even further. Look at South Africa where just 5% blacks are well off and whee 85% the land is owned by Whites. Soon will be the case to Ethiopia where everything will be owned by the few who happen to be forunate one way or the other.

The change in wealth seems too rapid,,,caution should be taken like the Chinese did. If we are in hurry like Russia we will get in the deep slop...getting out of it will be very hard and will be a long process.

In my opinion even if want to stop the traditional farming, the government should be involved in borrowing money for the farmers or work with share with Ngos..like usid etc.

I do belive in foreing investment, but it needs a lot of research and deep thinking before you decide to do something. Rules an dregulations... trasparency between the investors and the government... otherwise it will be like the flower business..where lots of hem ranaway with millions of dollars..some claiming bankrepcy and others just had enough money to live on in the west.

I really do not know...but souds very scary to me. Sorry!!!

offcourse the deal would not benefit the over 85% of ethiopian farmers. As a matter of fact ,what it does is take away fertile land, from what ever limited land these farmers already have!!The government we have in ethiopia is one, that doesn't give a rats behind about the livehood of ethiopians, except tigrians!!Ethiopia is being colonized by mafia tigrian cliques in the present day,so the news is not surprising at all!!

Although the idea of improving agriculture in Ethiopia is a nobel idea, I don't believe the leba Woyane government is motivated by the benifit this deal might bring to Ethiopia ad its people. I don't believe the investors als ogive a rats ass about Ethiopia and its people. They will probably export the produce to their own country or international market. So, wher does this leave Ethiopian people? Dirt poor as we ever were! I can't begin to describe the disgust I have for this wodam, narcissistic, unpatriotic, "kemalam" woyanes who are selling every parcel of the country,. They are not only selling land, they are selling the Ethiopian people's pride and integrity. Ethiopia was never colonized, but these people are purposely and indirectly letting Ethiopia be colonized by arabs and such. What the hell is the Ethiopian people waiting for? Where is the fighting spirit that we constantly claim to have? Are we a generation fo pussys who let the minor few rule us with iron fist?

there must be restriction on foreign investors. for example they should not not export their product while the country is in short of food. if they do that why not let them do it.

It is the irony that interests me here. TPLF has been torturing our people with hunger due to its ill conceived land policy. CUD and others have told TPLF to privatise land but the cursed group continually refused to do so saying such a move will disenfranchise small farmers and send them to the cities.

On the other hand, the same cursed group TPLF is now trying to sell 4 million hectare land (half of Maryland) to foreign governments.

I am of the opinion that they are doing this to involve foreign governments in suppressing any domestic up-rise (which is inevitable). It is highly likely this is yet another form of blackmail by the ever cursed tribal junta.

I am not surprised; how can we expect any less from a man who has no regards for human life. Melass and Isayass hate Ethiopia from the get go and Melass has been doing what he set out to do. Melass has given the land our grand parents fought and died for to Sudan free and clear; he never fought for the only port Ethiopia owned including a billion dollar bonus of Ethiopian tax payers money to his cousin Issayas. And now selling the fertile land our ancestors fought and died for to the highest and lowest foreign bidders--if this not pure hate, I don’t know what is.

Where are the Ethiopian Jegnas? Melass has done it all:
Ethiopians have no freedom of speech and press
Countless number Ethiopians have been falsely accused and thrown in jail and tortured
Countless number of Ethiopians have been killed
Countless number of Ethiopians have no enough food and basic medical care
Ethiopians can not afford to buy food because of extreme high prices
Countless number of Ethiopians going to die of starvations
The countries school system is getting worse
Ethiopian students are being exposed to chatt and alcohol more than ever before

And now, even our land is being given to foreign investors to pollute and destroy our people’s drinking water.

Sensible Tigreas--speak out and denounce the man who is destroying your name and drugging you in the mud with him. Your grand parents have fought and died for your country Ethiopia too. Don’t let it be destroyed by a mad man and a few of his fellow woyanes. SPEAK UP AND LET YOUR VOICE HEARD!! GOD IS WATCHING!!

Here is a famous poem by Pastor Martin Niemoller:
First they came for the communists, I did not speak out--because I was not a communist,
Then they came for the Socialists, I did not speak out--because I was not a socialist,
Then they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out--because I was not a trade unionist,
Then they came for the Jews, I did not speak out--because I was not a Jew,
Then they came for me--there was no one left to speak out for me.

Why don't you read before you open your mouth. If you open yr mouth with out knowing any thing every body will read your empity mind so easily.
First of all according to the constitution of the country,a land is owned by the goverment there fore you can't sell your land. This is the main policy difference b/n EPRDF and the other opposition parties. The second thing you and likes should know is that there is plenty of fertile land all over the country waiting to capable investers. It is a success if the goverment got these investors who can use these fertile land.If you go to Afar,Gambela,Benshangul,Somali, etc regions you will be wel comed if and only if you have the capability(money, moral ,knowledge) to invest.Other wise keep crying like the natty proffesor and the others looser DIASPORAS.

How is it difficult to see that these foreign investors will drive the price of food grain up? They will exploit the land and reduce its long term fertility. Also are you going to enslave the people on their own land? I say it is better for the government to take over agriculture by itself rather than giving the land to foreign investors hoping that the profit will trickle down to the country and the people. one of the problem in ethiopia is its 85% of population is rural that depends on primitive mode of agriculture. that is why when ever there is a drought tens of millions of ethiopians are affected. that means ethiopia need to tranform its people as well as its primitive way of farming and that only means investers with the necessary resources. its said ethiopia can feed africa let alone itself provided it exploits its resources successfully so what is the problem? hasnt coffee been ethiopias economy backbone because it brings foreign currency for the country to purchase what it needs such as oil, medicine etc...

So what do u expect from Weyane, they are inherited these behavior from their ancestor, they think like dinosaur who run to save their lives during their extinction without thinking their pedigree, Look even what land of Tigray looks like, it is as arid as during Jurassic park era, look what happened when millions of Tigre extricated in Alemata in 1985 (second round of dinosaur extinction,,, since they are the living dinosaur of our era). Now their genetics is inherited to XPDO of the empire and these XPDO are collaborating with them to make OUR EVER GREEN LAND a play ground for Tigre-Dinosaur, kkk. What our era dinosaur is doing to this empire in general and to my ppl in particularly shows the Tigre-dinosaur is at the verge of extinction when we reacted against them. No one save them, everybody (the land, air, forest, animals, human of non-dinosaur lineage) will react against them for their extinction. :.

For what we know this arab countries may grow the crop for thier own use not for the hungry people.

That is why elected and accountable govenment should be in power always. Please peopel like Z-Mike do not preach to us that Ethiopia was bad but now it is better while you know we could very well doomed with an accountable govenment.

What is the diffrence between lease and buy means? There are two kinds of land lease in ethiopia: commercial land lease and private land lease. In commecial land lease included forign investor and domistic investor whenever non ethiopia lease the land they get the lease for a limted years plus the producte which they produce i guess not less than half use for domestic sale with resonable price. The rest will be exported to generat forign currency. The other good thing when they lease the land the lease brings so many good things :new thcnology, ideas, job apportunite for the local people and so on. Private lease given to for ethiopian born which given the lease for 99 years. Leave alone forigner ethiopian born people never own a land whenever you lease is over they have to renew it.....

This plan to lease the land is aimed to impliment a modern system in our agro-economic field with the aim of modernizing the farming system. It is clear that a big investment is necessary to buy modern equipment and to start irrigation.instead of risking a bad loan to farmers and put preasure on them, this is the safest way as long as investors are coming with their own money and ready to work.they will even create a vast employment oportunities.stop crying and if you are real Ethiopians and have some money go back home and do something.any way I start believing this web site is infested with eris.

You will not fine one Ethiopian who will disagree that our farming system needs to be brought to modern standards. However, leasing large amounts of farmable land to foreign countries will not lead to this. Think of it this way, the countries leasing the land in Ethiopia need to since they don't have the enough land available in their own country to feed their people. Their agenda is to grow food on cheap land with very cheap labour and export it for profit or feed their own people with it. This food is not going to stay in the domestic market. How can you rationalize the leasing of land so others can grow food when 9 million Ethiopians are starving? With all the aide money and so called economic growth the government should be able to cultivate the land in a modern manner and let Ethiopians benefit from it.

Keep in mind leasing land in Africa is a clean method of colonialism. Don't think for a second that China, India, Saudi Arabia, et al. are doing it for the best interest of the Ethiopia. They just know they can exploit this government for their own gain. The Massai people are still fighting with the British since their land was leased out for 99yrs. In Madagascar the South Koreans had leased land half the size of Belgium for 99yrs before the Coup occurred. There have been several papers written on large land leases agreements by foreign countries and African countries. Almost all the papers conclude that such deals might bring immediate capital but they would be extremely detrimental in long run.

So when the government takes any loan they can get using us and our country as collateral, leases as much land as they can while millions starve, monopolize all viable markets of business, creates EFFORT with public funding and turns into a private conglomerate that only benefits an elite group of people, creates ethnical division which is unparalleled in the history of our country, starts wars which the people don’t support, have flawed elections to say the least, it leads me to ask you one question HOW CAN YOU STILL NOT BE SKEPTICAL OF THEIR MOTIVES?

YD [Visitor]

You laughed on the other article that was talking about the famine right now. You said death to all Ethiopians and laughed. Now you are saying Ethiopia is cursed and should be destroyed. You have no business here and we can all see through you, because to us Ethiopia is heaven on Earth and as long as one rock remains it will always be. So my question to you is, how do you get such satisfaction from the death and misery of God’s people and still talk about your heavenly after life? We can send you to God sooner so you can run your theories by him:D

I am neither an economist nor a politician, but it seems to me to be counter-intuitive that Ethiopia, which does not have enough food to feed herself and is thus accepting food from foreign donors, somehow has the excess farmable land to lease to foreign entities so they can produce food for export. Either there are not enough people to farm the excess land (highly unlikely) or Ethiopia’s farmers/farming practices are not efficient enough to compete with the foreign entities. Either scenario should provoke the government to entice use of this land by Ethiopian farmers by investing in sustainable and productive farming techniques such that Ethiopia not only becomes self sufficient, but would and should become a net exporter of food products. This is a very puzzling policy for the lay citizenry to comprehend

For EPRDF is it a way of converting the farm land into cash which would not be easy to get had it been farmed by Ethiopians.

Concerned Ethiopians have a heavy task waiting, already too late to stand united and throw this greedy and heinous regime once and for all. That is the only way to get out of starvation and poverty.

We all well know that it is not shortage of rain; wind, this or that is causing famine year after year since Woyane took over power.

It is the mismanagement and the incompetence of the government that could not control their greed for money and wealth and their determination to starve and hurt Ethiopians. Ethiopia can feed Africa if managed well by competent leaders.

Can an Ethiopian own/lease property in Saudi Arabia? I don't think so. So why is the current regime selling the land to Saudi investors at below fair market prices? The answer is obvious. There is no accountability and there is no transparency in Melese Land.

The irony of it is Ethiopia is ready for a repeat of the 1984 famine and here we are selling land to foreigners how will farm the land and export the crop to their respective countries.

Under the ever living Constitutional Monarchy every Ethiopian family has right to 1 gasha of freehold land to be past down from generation to generation so as to increase their standard of living. Selling lands for foreign investers may be one way of improving Ethiopia's famine condition. However, there are lots of basic issues that the government has to focus on.

It seems there is a lot to learn about agriculture, hydro system, good infrastructure and other technologies that could help develop the country and hopefully get out of famine. There is no enough educated manpower in Ethiopia not because they don't exist but they simply run away from the country.

Why do they run away? Because the government is too scary to live with! There is a whole lot of political issues that I would hate to get into that makes educated Ethiopians go away anywhere but Ethiopia!

How about to invite diasporas back to Ethiopia so that they can apply what they've learned? How about the government gives opportunity to learn and come back to Ethiopia?

After Ethiopian government with cooperation with Ethiopians all over the world to live together and to love one another, you can think of foreign investment.

We will have to do our homework before we go round and begging people to help us, fund us and blabla.

So, what is wrong when the government attempts to attract foreign investors in the country like ours? Stop vomiting here and be honest to your audience. The title states Ethiopia is selling its land to the highest bidders. In contrary, the article states that Ethiopian government has set aside 4 million acres of land for lease which is different than the way you guys in here are attempting to paint it or twist the fact. Slow your roll and for the sake of our people and nation have some truth to your arguments. On the other post you guys were complaining about the government not doing enough to feed its citizens, yet, when it tries to boost its economic infrastructures which would create many local and regional jobs for Ethiopians, you are again setting here and telling us Ethiopia is selling its land.

Ethiopia should have done this long ago but it’s not too late to do it now aggressively either to strengthening its farming infrastructures. This is smart economic work for Ethiopian diplomats and economists and I hope they success in their effort. Though some here including he admin are determined to stand against any positive progress for Ethiopia and accuse the government this and that. It is clear to many of us here that they even try to twist by saying is the Tigre mean Tigray land is for sell, though we all know the government is leasing lands where farming is more feasible in the country, period.
Thank you,

He does't care about farmers nor Ethiopia.

He is selling Ethiopian land to Saudi Arabia, Turkey and many more coutnries that never had good relationship with those previous loyal Ethiopian governments.

Where the hell do you think she got the money? The money they are going from these land selling/leasing will never benefit Ethiopia and Ethiopian people. Woyane never intends to help Ethiopia and Ethiopians. They are purposely destorying and dismanteling the country because they have a deep hatred for the country and contempt for the people. You did not find anything wrong and still supported him when MelAss removed Ethiopians from everything they knew and displaced our people and gave their land to Sudan.
You supported MelAss when he gave your cousin IssayAss a billion dollar as a fair-well gift--to the very man who turned around and killed your relatives.
You supported your master when he gave every part of Ethiopian port to IsayAss with out any kind of access to Ethiopia.
You do not find anything wrong when MelAss, arrest, torture, kill and take away Ethiopians freedom of speech and press.
No matter what MelAss does, you people have sold your souls and conscious not to see and hear all the crimes MelAss has been committing. But the rest of us--75 million Ethiopians from east, west, north and south of Ethiopia have seen and heard enough horrors not to trust a man who gave orders to kill other people’s children. Make a note of it--75 million Ethiopians hate your master dictator MelAss, period! You, Woyanes are wasting your time to convince Ethiopians; you are preaching to your own choir.

Hi Nzaret administators,
You asked,
1.Who are these "investors"?
People form different parts of the worlds who have the money to invest and bring technology transfer.

2. How many Ethiopian farmers are being thrown away from their livelihood?
None, the lands for lease are virgin farm lands which were never used before.

3. Where is all this land located?
All over Ethiopia

4. Is anyone listening to Ethiopian farmers?
Yes,the farmers need technology transfer from the rest of the world and EPRDF is doing all what it can to meet the demands of farmers by leasing virgin farm lands to investors.

5. Is Tigre land on Sale too?
No land is for sale in Tigray like in any other parts of Ethiopia, but lands are offered for lease to investors in Tigray also.

This is a deliberate attempt to move the attention of the world from the ever looming famine all over Ethiopia. They talked about 10% growth year after year, all kinds of wonders accomplished, how we are on the verge of selling electricity to our neighbors, and many many more. But what do we hear now, 6 plus million on the verge of starvation, another seven million not far behind. To divert attention from that they talk about giving away our land to outsiders, who in turn will bring to us untold riches and knowledge. Men ayenet hattiat bisera new egziabeher Ethiopian enezih ye dur awuraewoch ege yettalat. Has anybody ever seen them concern themselves about the cancer of division that is eating away at the fabric of our nation? How they deny it every day, oh its this and that group, or oh its Derg, narrow OLF, ONLF what have you. People are hating each other to the brink. We see it in here every day. We talk to our families back home too. They are not telling us about the rosy picture "our rulers" are living under. They are dying of inflation, fear, and constant harassment from the authorities. They can be told to pack their stuff and be thrown out of their homes, where they lived for generations. Is there not even one single Ethiopian left in this rotten system that is torturing our people, who can bring change from within? Are they all hodams, who will wait til the end when it has all exploded, and went our of control? People starve by millions, they talk about giving land to foreigners, sounds like Marie Antoinette to me.

Modern farming is the future for Ethiopia. We can`t go on waiting for the rain to come in these climate change, global warming times. Mother nature is changing rapidly, so we have to find alternative as rapidly. If we can`t come with other solution, that is may be the way to go. Leasing land doesn`t mean Selling. Selling land is the stupidest thing man can do. Look at the british, French, italian, Russian and many other Embassies around Ethiopia. They were allowed by the king to buy many hektares of land by the Emperor in the old days, and they own the land and nobody can take it from them for ever. That was the silliest mistake done in the old times. Leasing is just for a period of time and I think that is a wise move by the government. Imagine 6.2 millions of Ethiopians are in an emidiate need of food aid right now. God bless you all and god bless Ethiopia.

I don't mind if Ethiopia is leasing land for investors because Ethiopia has the land for years and years yet fail to feed her people. So its better if we doing it now rater than later, if we
wait any longer its going to be more problem. Because is going to be more people every year and more farmer and more people need land for farm
that cause different problems like
1. more deforestation and soil erosion
2. to small products to even feed them selves.
so its way better to leas our land rater than die hunger.
But the government have to make sure is going to help the people . He should have a law that the investor have to sale certain amount of product for the government or the people before they head to open market.
for the writer you ask if Tigre going to be on sale this very stupid question because you have to know Tigre is a part of Ethiopia and it dosen't matter where the government is leasing the land north south center any where as long as it feed Ethiopian people. You stop try do divide us even though we all have different attiude we all one when it comes to Ethiopia OK.

It is a short sighted move.
How is the starving population going to benefit from this deal, as the food grown is for export. Giving away land may enrich some pockets ,but we are closing the door to future export possibilities, thus creating a cycle of poverty. How much arable land are we willing to part with?
It is a sure way of Creating a twenty first century colonialism. Machinery intensive farming will create minimal job opportunities. The joke is on Africans. It took centuries to overcome western colonialism now Ethiopia is herself making deals that would surely create economic inequality and second class citizenship of its farmers.

The main thing we should concentrate here is the drought and climate change we are facing year after year, which become a hinderance to feed our selves.we should make our selves not any more to depend on the rain.to let investors take a risk and work hard by compating to eachother, bringing a great work ethics.
Your concern about the deal making economics inequality and creating a second class citizens,as was seen in zimbabwe after their independence in the 80s is Totaly different.this is about buisiness which the investors are leasing the land peirodicaly in renewal basis.

You owe ur existense to Egypt's interest buddy...u got nothin to cheer about at all...
No self conceived or sponsored achievemets on your belt EXCEPT MISERY, HOPELESNESS AND SHAME.

I admire you however, for barking till your last breath...but u need to save it to anlyze your next survival game plan...

Egypt is finding you irrelevant to their NILE SECURITY...They might even sell you out in reverse.

I am telling you "slut"...YOU NEED TO FIND ANOTHER SUGAR DADDY...as we are closing on you with your the scandinavian sponsors and Iran is what you got left...We all know where that will lead you...

We could have said it is for good hadn't we lost trust when the Asab port is awarded to Essays. Prperty price there in Addis is more expensive than any developed nation including the US and canada. Therefor, We would like to demonestrat our awarness, the selling of properties in Ethiopia is not a legtitmate way or a step forward to capture poverty in Ethiopia. Rather, it is a process where The Crime minester is making more and more money before he departs Ethiopia with Tigray Tigrign. The next regim is not gonna legitmize your ownership should you get involved in such transactions.

First thank you to tewoderos and mona,
Ohhh I did finish ESL And English and I can speak two languages. I don't have to focus on my spelln or grammar. I'm not writing for my profession.
So mr. CONFUSED deal with my writing I'm sure you are not my level to understand what I write. As your name, you are who you are, you are lost lol
The funny thg is that you the only one could not understand me, which is you are the one who needs to go to school.
Other than that dude, I will write you when I sit and focused.
If you are angry about my comments then write your response. Since you don't know whose who, don't dis or down others.

This is systematically being done on purpose to bring chaos in Ethiopia. TPLF's time to flee the rest of Ethiopia and declare Tigray independent is nearing. They are starving the people on purpose so that they are weak and will not fight. TPLF has won so far because the rest of Ethiopians do not want to hurt Tigrayans. It is the first time in history to have very narrow minded pro ethnic government. So Ethiopians are patient because they don't want to hurt the rest of Tigrayans. Of course there are HOdams of Tigre, Amara, Oromo, etc who will fight tooth and neck with TPLF to benefit themselves. It is those people we should go after. By leasing land to foreigners is indirectly allowing Ethiopia to be colonized while Ethioipians are fighting with these investors then TPLF ;and Tigray region is gone. It is being done systematically.
