The new bridge will be constructed 1,060 meters (3,480 feet) above sea level over the Blue Nile Gorge. The road rehabilitation work is for a stretch of road that links Goha Tsion and Dejen, two towns situated about 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level and separated by the Nile River. The new bridge that spans the Abay River (Blue Nile) in Ethiopia is to be inaugurated on September 10. The bridge was constructed with the help of the Japanese government. The following is the project description by Kajima

Ethiopia's First Extradosed Bridge to Span the Blue Nile Gorge

Ethiopia is an agricultural power that supports a population of 60 million, the second highest in Africa. Since 1999, Kajima has handled construction in a project to rehabilitate the National A3 Addis Ababa-Goha Tsion Trunk Road (a Japanese grant aid project), a critical land transportation route. Kajima recently obtained an order for Phase III of the project, involving road rehabilitation work between the towns of Goha Tsion and Dejen and construction of the Abbay Bridge.

The road rehabilitation work is for a stretch of road that links Goha Tsion and Dejen, two towns situated about 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level and separated by the Nile River. The new bridge will be constructed 1,060 meters (3,480 feet) above sea level over the Blue Nile Gorge. Kajima's difficult task is to conduct repair work on the mountain road in precipitous terrain without disrupting traffic during the construction period.

The new bridge will be constructed upstream from the current Abbay Bridge (built in 1948). Ethiopia's first extradosed prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge will have a center span of 145 meters (476 feet) and total length of 303 meters (995 feet). The bridge, which will accommodate heavy vehicles with axle loads of 12 tons and total weight of 60 tons, is attracting the attention of the Ethiopian Association of Civil Engineers and the local construction industry.

Construction is scheduled for completion in December 2008. The rehabilitated road and new bridge are expected to ensure access to Ethiopia's largest grain and livestock belt and activate the distribution of agricultural produce.

No matter what, the revolutionary democrats are bridging the country together. I would like to hear what thatuniveraity of so and so Economy proffesor would say. I remeber reading an article written by a diaspora educated, now, University professor in Diasopra - attackig the infrustructure work that the revolutionary democrats are excuting.

Remeber, What is Improtant here is - Planning, encourgaing, modeling and rewarding the future generation, and that is what the revolutionary democrats are doing for the next generation that will be leading this great nation ETHIOPIA!

Democracy is not achived overnight! those of Kinijit and opposition parties we need you as well keep debating for true democracy so that the revolutionary demcrats can learn from their mistakes and do better.

birr60, I am not a politician or anything but I will tell you that development alone is not going to transform the country, it needs a second support which is: Integrity, uprightness, fairness, justice, honesty, of individuals, otherwise building and development wont stand for too long alone.....

Good job Japan!

This is the only infrastructure project which was fully funded by a "donor country". I believe the money was well spent because it was the Japanese themselves who executed the project.

On the other hand, buidling roads and bridges alone will not bring development. The people must feel that they own these projects; not that they are some sort of a bribe for forgetting Meles' dictatorial actions or for voting EPRDF in the next elections. If you ask me, the majority of people living on both banks of the river think that the project is a bribe, not a well-intentioned development effort.

For the people to appreciate and support such infrastructure projects, we need a democratically elected government, not one that is holding on to power through the barrel of the gun.

Mengistu had also cadres who were telling the Ethiopian people about the achievment of their great leader.Construction of the bridge and other buildings are good but these can be useful if there is a peaceful power transition, a situation where all Ethiopians will participate in their country`s development. There were also good buildings and bridges in SADDAM HUSSIEN´s IRAQ and Mussoloni/Stalin and Hitler were all good in doing construction but that does not compensate their terror act or tyranny.
