An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 767 is seen just before it crashes into the sea off the Comoro Islands in 1996.

Ethiopia's own Superhero Pilots Leul Abate and Yonas Mekuria

In the past couple of days, much of the world has been talking about super hero pilot Captain Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger, whose heroic action is credited in saving the lives of 155 passengers aboard the ill-fated US airways flight 1549 by crash landing on the Hudson river. We thought, it is time to reflect on our own heroic captain and the co-pilot of Ethiopian airlines flight 961. The following is a profile of Captain Leul Abate on wikipedia.

Captain Leul Abate (ልኡል አባተ) (born 1954) was the pilot of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961, which was hijacked on November 23, 1996, fifteen minutes out from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, by three Ethiopians seeking political asylum. The plane crashed in the Indian Ocean near Comoros after running out of fuel, killing 125 of the 175 passengers and crew on board.

Abate observed that, "[The hijackers] knew they wouldn't make it to Australia - they just wanted us to crash. They should be dead. The way they were talking they didn't want to live."[1]

Four hours later, the plane was nearly out of fuel as it approached the Comoros islands. Abate's co-pilot, Yonas Mekuria, had been attacked with an axe. The communications system in the airplane had been disabled. The hijackers ignored his plea to land at the Comoros's Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport, and instead, one of them, drinking a bottle of whiskey, decided to fly the plane himself.

When the plane ran out of fuel, both engines failed. Abate and Mekuria, bleeding and bruised, fought with the hijackers. Abate used a ram air turbine to preserve the aircraft's most essential functions, but in this mode some hydraulic systems—such as the flaps—were inoperative. This forced Abate to land at more than 175 knots (about 200 miles per hour or 320 kilometers per hour).

Still fighting with the hijackers, Abate tried to ditch the aircraft in shallow waters 500 metres off Le Galawa Beach Hotel near Mitsamiouli at the northern end of Grand Comoro island. The left engine and wingtip struck the water first, causing the aircraft to break up. Island residents and tourists, including a group of scuba divers and some French doctors on vacation, came to the aid of crash survivors.

125 of the 175 passengers and crew members were killed, as well as all three hijackers. Both pilots survived the crash and Abate continues to fly for Ethiopian Airlines.

Abate considers Mekuria, the co-pilot, the real hero. Mekuria fought the hijackers while he himself was bruised and bleeding, giving time for Abate to land the airplane. "He was a life-saver," Abate said.[1]

Flight 961 was not the first time Abate had experienced a hijacking. On two previous occasions, Abate had been hijacked.[1] On both occasions, he managed to talk the hijackers into stopping their attempt.

Many poor Africans died in a plane crash in Comoros. All Americans survived a plane crash in New York. What you call that? Fortune? Rescue arrived with in a minute for the New York crash. GOD knows how long it took for the rescue to arrive for the Comoros plane crash victims. Let us pray to have that kind of fast response all over the world.

This is an amazing story. The minds of hijackers are very dull and they dare to put others life in danger. I appreciate the pilots great effort to make crash landing on the water. I know one flight hostess who survived this incident. It is a miracle for her. May God bless the pilots. It was sad to lose all those innocent citizens.

I think this is a little too much.

A. This is over a decade old.

B. Please don't compare this guy with the U.S. airways pilot. The Ethiopian lost over 100 people. My brother happens to be one of the dead.

Plus, we know for sure the ET pilots are not heroes. The co-pilot instigated the crash. He was confrontational with the Hijackers (against the rules).

C. The pilot has ample opportunity to properly land the plane in an airport. He waited too long to make a decision, that's why the plane went down.

Nazret, please don't make an ass of yourself...don't open old wounds, don't embarrass yourself.. The Et pilot was second rate. I lost my brother and over 150 other perished because of his incompetence.

The only reason The ET INCIDENT IS being compared with the NYC crash is because of the similarity of attempted water landing. But the talents of the two pilots stands in contrast.

Go find another hero...you freaken copy cats. Just because Americans have a hero, you have to make a fake one for yourself. I will never comeback to this shitty website again.

Peace.

Thats a pure lie. How can he crash land the airplane while he is fighting???? If the Hijackers were alive we could hear the story from both side but this is one sided story. What did the voice recorede of the air plane showed??? what was the result showed from black box??? Were are all the evidence????
I dont buy that bull S...
Simply the pilot couldnt land the air plane on its belly instead he landed on the side of the left engine and it cartwheeld.
On the top of that the flight attendants should tell the passengers not to inflate the safety vest until they are out of the water. Most of the passengers who died - they inflated the vest already when the plane was in the air.

This was an avoidable disaster, no thanks to TPLF! When TPLF took over, Seye Abraha left in charge to observe ET activities, he got rid of the anti-hijacking team from Ethiopian Airlines, and eleven flights were hijacked, ending with the disaster in Comoros. He even fired countless senior management at will, starting the mass exodus of ET talent to Mid-East airlines. Seye Abraha was finally jailed on corruption, new airline cabin security hired, and Ato. Girma Wake who left the airline in early 90's was asked to return from Mid-East and manage ET. Ethiopian Airlines registered earnings over $1 Billion last year! Everything happens for a reason.

I read your opinion regarding "kokeb" :D comment on this forum. The pilots and technicians training school under EAL started its service to Ethiopians, Africa, Asia and the middle esat during Haile years of governance. After Ethiopian revolution, during Col. Mengistu Hailiemariam :D regime the Ethiopian Air Lines (EAL) built up its capacity to be the most profitable and successful aviation company in Ethiopia and Africa:idea: The production of "Eshet" agro aircraft started during Mengistu time. This production facility was sold to Chek company by weyane=tplf ወያኔ ማፍረስ፣ መስረቅ፣ መሸጥ፣ ታሪክን መካድ፣ እንጂ ሌላ ምን ሙያ አለው?

The upgrading of Bole International Airport New plan which completed this time was planned during Menges' "Ethiopia Tikdem" regime.

When weyane took power in 1991 one of its targets was to dissolve the Ethiopian Air Line (ELA) our National Icon. On recent interview on VOA Dr. Kinfe Michael exposed that weyane invited him to Addis Abeba for a professional advice to sell EAL & he consulted them not to do it. During the honey moon season of weyane & shabia:lalala: both groups decided to sell and rename it East African Air Line serving Ethiopia, Djibouti, ertira. All those ambitions of bandit & distractive groups were aborted by the strong opposition from the EAL professionals, workers and the people of Ethiopia. We all protected our National Asset and now EAL survived for glory.

So the name His Imperial Majesty Hailesilassie & Col. Mengistu Hailemariam is to be remembered for ever for their positive contributions to the progress & success of Ethiopian Airlines.

Oh God. How thick for the losers above who are just opening their big mouths i wish you all were on that aircraft at that particular time and then we would have seen what would have happened - thick heads! The top most priority for a pilot first is safety of the passenger's onboard even more than their own lives. Let us be a bit reasonable, they did their level best to save the plane. Remember a plane crash in water has a higher chance of survival than a plane crash on land! There is a difference between what happened to the ET plane and the US Airways plane. Ethiopian was hijacked and US airways was not hijacked. So please, make sure you have facts right before you can open your mouths and make non sensical remarks and comments. The ET plane was hijacked and for both pilots it was death in either way either in the hands of the hijackers or either by crashing! It is very difficult to make a decision also because the pilot themselves are under pressure and stress. It is a moment of life and death and you actually see death standing in your face! Ask me I will tell being the wife of a pilot it is not one of the best and easiest jobs in the world where you don’t even know if you will see the next morning alive or not!

Im proud of both the ET pilots even more than “sully”

Bravo to the pilots for their heroic efforts. No one should second-guess their actions. If the insane hijackers hadn't forced the flight crew to keep the plane in the air until it ran out of fuel, causing an hydraulic system failure, the crew would have been able to slow the plane before hitting the water, and more lives could have been spared.

By the way, this store was featured on a cable television programin the U.S.

Only Aricans continuously doubt that their own people can do any good. Its so sad. These guys made the best out of a bad situation. For example, they landed as close to the coast as possible without endangering others but still close enough for people on the beach to come to the aid of the passengers.

yeha, flight 961 is in Africa, east to west. You probably meant you flew on the same airplane regietered as ET-AIZ to London few days before it got hijacked and crashed in the comoros island because of your uncles (siye abrahas) fault of firing all anti hijackers. There were too many hijackings in the early 1990s right after siye abraha was appointed. TPLF is responsible for the loss of passengers lives and the airplane.

yohaness hailu, the Ethiopian pilots are heroes. They managed to save 50 people while fighting with three hijackers. The US airways pilots just had engine failure due to birds injested to both engnies. Ethiopian pilots are first rate, Ethiopian as an airline is an excellent one, I believe you are one of those dirty "eritreans".

eritrean bullet, before the flight a movie is shown for passengers that explains what to do in case of emergency. Some people pay attention and some people ignore it. Those who paid attention survived, those who inflated their jackets before the landing drowned.
