Ethiopia Says It Is at War With Somalia

audioVOA interview with Bereket Simon

By James Butty
Washington, D.C.

VOA

Ethiopia says it is at war with Somalia
Ethiopia said its involvement in Somalia is part of self-defense because of what the government called a repeated declaration of jihad on Ethiopia by the Islamists in Somalia

Bereket Simon is advisor to Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. For the first time, he said Ethiopia has declared war on Somalia.

“Technically, we are war with Somalia. Everybody knows it is them who declared jihad on Ethiopia. So technically speaking, we are at war with them based on their declaration of war. Now, we have asserted our rights to defend ourselves,” he said.

Simon rejected suggestion by some that Ethiopia’s war in Somalia was an attempt to divert attention from the country’s economic and political problems.

“Fortunately we have a government that gives priority to its internal affairs. At now time this country had such a government that focuses on creating an enabling atmosphere for its own people and creating good things here at home. We believe poverty is the main enemy of our country and we are working on it. We have registered about 10 percent growth of the last four consecutive years. And I assure you the internal situation is very good and stable apart from some hiccups here and there,” Simon said.

Ethiopia has also been criticized for having a history of destabilizing Somalia. But Simone blamed Somalia for past wars between the two countries.

“The reason for the two previous wars was the expansionist attitude of the Somali government who wanted to take part of Ethiopia to be incorporated with the greater Somalia they had in their mind. Nevertheless, this is a new government which doesn’t have an qualm with the Somali people,” he said.

Simon described the situation in Somalia as chaotic, and he said Ethiopia as a neighboring country is only interested in seeing Somalia stabilized again.

I am sure any confrontation with the so-called Islamic Court shiftas in Somalia is going to be a mere mop-up operation that won't last but a week, at most.

Ethio-Somali relations will blossom once the legitimate government takes full charge of the land with or without Ethiopia's help.

The future for both countries is bright,in spite of the minor irritants which dog both.

TPLF is dragging Ethiopia into war. Why do not they first solve Ethiopian internal problem. I worked in Addis Ababa and know that the ordinary people do not like to be ruled by Meles, who many people believe has Eritrean blood and sabotaged with Isaias Aferwoki of Eritrea to separate Eritrea, one of the province of Ethiopia. Almost everybody I talked to thought that I could help because I am a white man from Europe. Ethiopians should solve their own problem and live peacefully. If Ethiopia start war the country would be at risk because everybody is unhappy with the current EPRDF government. Hope that the Shimagles (elderly) will intervene and tell Meles to stop ruling the country under a barrel of gun.

The nuts at the helm of power in Ethiopia (i.e. Meles & Co.) are getting the nation into a mess they do very well realize. Deliberate and well calculated!

Thanks for diligently working on hastening the last days of your otherwise naturally dying regime and, bringing Al-Qaeda to the soil of Ethiopia. Above all, isn't Meles trying to make Addis present-day Baghdad?

Truth shall ultimately triumph and on the graves of Meles and his cohorts will emerge a just system in Ethiopia.

Mr. so called "aberra demeksa", the usual spokesman for the Woyane fascists is dreaming. Your wishful thinking of a cake-walk over Somalia reminds me of the neo-conservatives supporting the Bush administration for going to war in Iraq. The "shock & awe" was supposed to bring the enemy to its knees within days. People like Bereket Simon and yourself usually think with their stomaches and not their brains. I don't doubt the gallantry of our military when it comes to defending ourselves from foreign aggression, but every one knows this proxy war won't get us any where, even if you have been trying to instigate your failed creation of antagonism between our Christian and Muslim brothers. We have no business in the internal affairs of a neighboring country. Don't expect that the blood of Ethiopians will be shed in the deserts of Ogaden and Somalia this time, as you succeeded in doing it at Bademe.

Greg,

First of all, you are right. Ethiopians should solve their problems by themselves. It would be very helpful if you guys, “white men from Europe” or else where, stop meddling in our affairs.

Abera Demeksa,

“Ethio-Somali relations will blossom once the legitimate government takes full charge of the land with or without Ethiopia's help.”

Which legitimation are you talking about? Did the world miss a free election that took place in Somalia? That must have been in Baido and the soldiers sent by the ‘legitimate” Ethiopian government were acting as neutral observers.
You try hard to appear smart (Do you remember your “mia culpa the other day? It is mea culpa, mister would-like-to-look smart Latin speaker!), however hard you try; you just end up fooling yourself. You do not even recognize how odious your cerebral flatulence has become. If you wish to participate in a high profile discussion, I recommend taking a course by Tafesse or the Cat. Even though I do not share many of their views, at least, they are accessible to reasoning. Although, considering your truck record, I do not think that you can even qualify as their office clerk.

It is simply "an attempt to divert attention from the country’s economic and political problems". For that matter Ethiopia is invaded by enemies 15 years ago and its people are in fierce battle with woyane. As to me Bereket-Issayas-Meles all are friends working to disintegrate Ethiopia. The war between Eritrea & Ethiopia was a PSEUDOWAR. Meles has great compassion for his brother Issayas. If that wouldn't have been true,Ethiopians overthrowed Issayas in 1998. During that war Meles served as a defense secretary of Eritrea. He hindered the march of Ethiopian troops to Asmara becuse he is serving the interest of Issayas. Generally, systematically organized criminals are "leading" our country. Regarding Somalia, Somalians are in problem for years. They have unique problem which can only be solved by their people. Ethiopias involvement would worsen the already burning flame in that country. Ethiopia has already enoug problems internally which is created by Agazi woyanes. Hence, whatever action of Woyane in Somalia is really intended to divert the attention of Ethiopian people and international community from internal political and economic problems. So, tell them to stop meddling in the internal affairs of Somalia.

God Bless Ethiopia!

Similarly Ethiopia is starting a preemptive war against Islamists in Somalia and nobody is sure the outcome of this action.

One thing is sure, Ethiopians do not support this war and if our people have their way they will demand the resignation of Melese and his government early on this war and not after the war and the devastation like Lebanon.

Mr. Bereket, Ethiopia is not at war with Somalia! The Somali Transitional Government (TFG) , the Puntaland, and the Somaliland governments are all on Ethiopia’s side in this conflict! Ethiopia is fighting only with the Jihadists and its foreign collaborates who are seeking to grab Oraden areas in East Africa!

why cant anybody comment on the real issues here instead of going all over the place from meles bashing to HIV in ethiopia. the real problem seems to be the pressure from the west to not let an islamist faction take over somalia. ethiopia has already chosen a side by supporting america's war on terrror...no matter how hard they try the 'secular' somali government has little chance of restoring order. the sharia courts have more influence and a better track record at this point...actually restoring order in some parts. what that means to ethiopia is that now it has a life long enemy with a lot of determination...my two cents..

Coolman,
Please pardon me if I have written anything that upsets you. I know the Addis Ababa street children as well as you know them. I know the hungry Ethiopians. I visited the remotest and drought affected parts of the country. I evidenced the peaceful protest by CDU supporters in Addis Abeba, which is the largest of all public gathering I have ever seen. I know how the Addis Ababa police beat the newspaper distributing kids. I worry for poor and silenced Ethiopians as you may probably do.

I know Meles did not visit any part of the country struck by famine. He did not visit any AIDS patient either. The donor community very well know that EPRDF is minority dominated dictator front that still believes gun is the only way to rule Ethiopia. I am a free man. I always express my feelings and concerns thanks to my ancestors who struggled for democracy. I wish Ethiopians had given the opportunity to actively participate in their country affairs and brought a lasting solution. If it were not for WWW, many people like you would not freely comment. Would it be interfering if I tell you to give priority to feed your hungry children and take care of your millions of citizens dying of AIDS. It is not interfering to tell you people to stop ethnic hatred using the new phrase from Rwanda ‘enterhamwe’. Please for heaven’s sake use your brain. The problem of Ethiopia is not beyond man’s capacity. I know Ethiopia has many educated minds who can get the country out of this vicious circle of poverty, disease, and dictatorship.
Please try to see me in your new eyes. I am your and Ethiopian friend.

I just can't believe it how the hell in the world these two Eritreans have managed to control Ethiopians' palace and successfully decieved people to highjack Ethiopian politics in the most dangereous way. I am also start wondering whether the tigrays in the woyane circle have proper and healthy brain that is capable of analyzing elementary reasoning, and thinking capacity to see a little bit farther. Meles and Bereket are the only Eritreans and yet we allowed them playing the central role of Ethiopian politics for fifteen years! selling and abandoning Ethiopia's interest is not anything new for them, however what they are doing right now seems to me the greatest of all betrayals directed upon Ethiopia and her people by a government based at Minilik palace as it endangers the very existence of Ethiopia as a nation and severly damages and possibly destroys the centuries old Ethiopians trust, unity and tolerance amongst themselves. This will be a dream come true for those who have been wishing our disintegration and their hand might have something to do with the chaos about to unfold. The Egypt sponsored Eritreans are working both outside and inside Ethiopia to destroy our beloved country and it is upto us, our responsiblity, to stand for her or there wont be the Ethiopia we know for the next generation.

I am not upset by your comment. However, it is a factum that Africa never profited from foreign intervention. They never intervened when and where it mattered. They tell us that they care about democracy while they help stabilize dictators. They tell us they care about peace while they sell arms to despots. They tell us they give us aid while they enslave us with their unbearable credit conditions. They tell they care about free market while they protect their market like a female tiger would protect its baby. They tell us that they care about human rights while they do their business with tyrants. They tell us that they are Christians and care about life and intervene in Bosnia but they close their eye in Ruanda. Are not all humans equal in front of God or the Westerners worship a different God? I do not want to lecture you in history. We know what’s up dear friend. I hope you know it too. I am not the one to whom you need to address your concern about Ethiopia’s problem with ethnic dominated politics. The prime minister’s office or better your embassy in Addis Ababa is a better place. Why should I doubt the sincerity of your concern? I have no problem with your being Ethiopia’s friend.
You wrote “I know Ethiopia has many educated minds who can get the country out of this vicious circle of poverty, disease, and dictatorship.” Yes, we have educated people to get rid of poverty and many diseases. Dictators, however, are not so easy to get rid of.
Just for your info, I have no ethnic bias what so ever. I never could because of the diverse genes I carry.

To make it even better, they saved you from Hailu Shawoolf’s Interwamue initiatives that tried to overthrow the Ethiopian government. Kinijit would have bankrupted Ethiopia just like they did to their own party. They would have also started a civil war by trying to destroy local cultures and languages and by telling to whole country not to work, go to school, and to stay-at-home and be lazzy.

p.s. If there is any Shaebia in Ethiopia, it is your own Kinijit/AFD/EPPF who are licking Isayas' boots for power. These bandas danced with Shaebia when it dishonored the Ethiopian flag. These bandas who are now allied with the Jihadists will get the usual dula along with the Jihadists.

It looks like Bereket Simon was quoted out of context by James Butty!

I just listened to the VOA interview which I should have done before and Bereket Simon did not say that “Ethiopia declared war on Somalia” as the article claims! Bereket Simon did, however, use the word “Somalia” where he should have said “Somali Jihadists and their allied”. I think it would be helpful if he made these corrections in the future.

Nevertheless, I think James Butty owes us an apology for the false and misleading article that quotes Bereket Simon out of context!

It is true that Ethiopians and the rest of Africans can feed themselves and resolve their problems if your "democratic" ancestors stop gluing their hands deep in our pockets.

So much damage has been done to Ethiopia since he has introduced the communist style "freedom and liberalism" with the support of hodam bandas including promoting land locked Ethiopia when he supposed to defend her interest. Cheffee, I know in my heart that those brave sons and daughters of Ethiopia didnt fight for this, the real woyanes and ehidens(now called bihere amhara democratic movment), however with the help of 'chinigafiwoch' like yourself, the two Eritreans have managed a continuous mockery upon the people of Ethiopia, they have fought for! I do know too that hadnt has been for his death, Hayelom would have deported you all to Eritrea and Atse Yohannes could have beheaded all you triators.

Yirgachefe,
You look educated but your mind is no better that those Woyanes who worship Meles and Bereket. Let the Gonderes tell you who Bereket is. How long you Eritrean and the Eritrean bandas bleed Ethiopia?

Min aynet Kiletam neh. Yeethiopia amlak yesirahin yistih.

Why you woyanes destroy Ethiopia and preach hatred? Are not you Tigres who live all over the country and benefit from Ethiopia? Who went to Tigary and Eritrea except the Tigres? For the Woyanes, to attack Ethiopia is to attack your mother. That is what you are exactly doing.

Yebelubetin wochit sebari- malet enente nachihu.

It is not too late. Confess your sin committed against Ethiopia and pledge to the unity and peace of Ethiopia. If not, God will avenge Ethiopia and true Ethiopians. Do not think those oppose the Meles divide and rule policy are power mongers. It is because of the real love to Ethiopia. What do you lose if Ethiopia remains united and peaceful? You can still embezzle like what you do now. Your children will also have something to steal if they become immoral citizens like you. Rememeber all these will pass and you will fight with your own guilt until you sigh your last breath.
What evidence can you see other than cutting off Eritrea? What convince you other than what happen at Badme? What evidence do you need to see that Meles is against Ethiopia when he forced Eritrean in Ethiopia to declare themselves they were enslaved by Ethiopia during the referendum? Do you think Ethiopians will remain patient to you forever? Do you think Ethiopians are ignorant of all what you are doing? Do you now patience-it is all about patience and Ethiopian Unity.
Think-you are Ethiopians destroying Ethiopia.

Satenaw: Thank you so much for bringing this informative article to the attention of this forum. We have always known that the TPLF terrorists are behind the mysterious bombings in Addis and all the other regions. We were just mystified as to why a government would carry out such a heinous crime against its people and its own infrastructure and now we know.

Apparently it all boils down to money and when it comes to pecuniary matters, TPLF greed knows no bounds. TPLF has created more multi millionaires subservient to its cause in the last 15 years than Microsoft in 25 years. Considering that Microsoft’s market capitalization grew from 0 to over 100 billion in that period compared to Ethiopia’s negative GDP growth in the last 15 years, it is easy to conclude that there is a huge sucking machine embedded in the foreign aid and debt based TPLF economy. We have supper leeches in the form of overnight millionaires that are growing FAT and CHUBBY right in front of our eyes by sucking our people bone dry. As if that wasn’t bad enough now they are manufacturing a bogus war to maximize their foreign aid in the name of fighting terrorism. I think it is time to get rid of these unscrupulous looters and rope them on the highest trees.

Cheers,

About Woynie liberating Ethiopian people from Dergu is a long subject needs more time to argue. However, on thing always amazing me and can't take it when people like you come and tell us how the opposition is more Eritrean than the TPLF leaders. Just to refresh your mind:

1. TPLF might never been where it is now if it was not for Eritrean.
2. TPLF raise by Eritrean, they feed by Eritrean, they are (engdya lij for Eritrean),
3. Melese is the first Ethiopian leaders who writes a book about Eritrea and tell the world Eritrea colonized by Ethiopia (which is his mother is colonized by Ethiopia).
4. Meles was the first leader who sent a memo to UN supporting the Eritrean independent
5. Melese the first leader to go to Saba stadium to celebrate their independence
6. Melese order to killed Addis Ababa university student while they are out to demonstrate against the independent of Eritrea.
7. Meles put Tigrean son and daughter to save Eritrean struggle.
8. Melese give free raid to every Eritrean to suck Ethiopian resource (from coffee to gold)
9. Melese give God given right access to the red sea.
10. Meles give free naval boat (Ethiopian property) to Eritrean…
11. till the 1998 these two leaders are fought side by side to destroy Ethiopia
12. Till 1998 Melese was making fun to Ethiopian saying if any body thinks Ethiopian will fight Eritrean brothers they are fool…
13. Melese ignoring the cry of Ethiopian and go with his hidden agenda to negotiate with Eritrean after we lost 70000 innocent Ethiopian lives…
14. Melese is the one who put in prison his own comrades with a fabricated charge..

My friend I really don't mind if you hate CUD I am not expecting people who profited from this government agree with them. However, there is a fact that we can't change no matter what you guys try to twist the truth. At least admit what ever happened it happened you can change it. TPLF never stand for the interest of Ethiopian since their birth. I have the opportunity to live with them in the mid 1985 so I know who they are and how they think when it comes to Ethiopia. CUD doesn't look like Eritrean in any way or shape; just take a look the collection of people who lead this organization and compare the leader of the current administration. I am not register supporter for any political party but clearly I know TPLF is not a right people to Ethiopian or Ethiopian interest. I wish my fellow Tigrean brothers/sisters see the evil part of TPLF.

Dear Melekite Ethiopia [Visitor],

I actually don't blame you for the way you feel because you actually believe what you said.

I also used to believe those empty propagandas until I found out the truth for myself. No matter what people say about Meles, one fact is undeniable! Ethiopia’s infrastructure under Meles has developed more rapidly than any other time in the past.

Remember when the Diasporan hate-politicians used to say; “ than nothing is being built in the rest of Ethiopia while everything is being built in Tigray”?

Now they are saying: “EPRDF is building all types of infrastructure in Ethiopia just to fool the people”

Tomorrow, they will probably blame EPRDF for building the greatest economy in Africa!

The bottom line is, I will support any government that develops the Ethiopian economy instead of destroying it like the Kinijits tried to do!

If that’s not loving your country, then I don’t what is! You can never claim to love your country and with it to be destroyed until your party gains power!

The way I see it, Melekit Ethiopia, it is you that needs to assess his/her position.

Gracias!

It’s a typical behavior of a government that is attempting to sustain it self in power by elaborately confusing the people. The true essence of the so called Etho-Somaila war is nothing more than a two militant warlords groups who are scrambling for power and recognition by the international community.

If the war start the losers will be poor Ethiopians and Somalians with a lot to gain for a regime that’s is increasingly paranoid about its future.

It is now a well known fact that using sheer force against people who are struggling to assert their God given rights will only push them to the extreme…

Although you did slaughter at will in the streets of Addis those who dared to believe in freedom, I sincerely doubt that you can do the same in the streets of Mogadishu to those who dare believe in Freedom and Allah without engulfing our region to an everlasting inferno…

Caution! Is my advice to you if you want to survive this trap…

Ra'Oeil ራዕይ,

You know very well that some of those in Kaliti wanted to slaughter 15,000 lives just to get their palace and have this political leverage that you attempting to use in this forum.

Unfortunately, 200 people died as a direct result of the disturbance called for by Kinijit leaders who never directly confronted the police themselves. Though there was a net gain of 14,800 lives as a result of arresting Hailu, I wish more lives were saved. But since the key-shibir engineer is now in custody, I expect that the current peace and stability will continue no matter how many Calendar Strikes and Stay-At-Homes are attempted.

Yirgacheffeeይርጋጨፍ,
I addressed to you thinking that you believe in proper reasoning. Do not tell me that the economy in Ethiopia is growing where getting a daily bread is limited to few affluent Ethiopians and the Woyane cadres. I am from poor but loyal Ethiopian parents. I know what ordinary Ethiopians live. You may be the member of the Meles royal family. You do not know Ethiopians. Because you are scared to see the public. Tel me in the language that I understand what an economic growth is. Is that having more and more beggars including our unfortunate brothers and sisters from Tigray. What is growth if we see mothers sleeping on the streets with their newborn babay and dying of all sort of simple treatable diseases. May be some corrupt Woyanes are given loan by the order of the TPLF's and construct some buildings. That does not show growth. Do you know how much Ethiopia owes under the TPLF regime? Do you know how much lone Meles took from IMF and World Bank and transferred to Eritrea, sying that Eritra is a new country and cannot take loan? If you are a thinking animal, this is enough for you. If you are just suborn woyane, I cannot help you have to be reborn to understand the fact.

I know it is hard to swallow the truth and the truth always heart. One of the very first sign to have the woynizem sickness is not to take the truth… nothing makes me sick more than been called Shabie/Woyanie. These two words for me like an insult… when ever times I hear this word I feel like I am stubbed or I feel like I was sentence to death. You know ever night when I go to my bed I ask my God if I make it the next day I want him to help me not to be Woyanie or Shabie, and not to associate with the baby killers, not associate with Ethiopian haters…even if I have to die and that is the last day and only night for me to live I told my almighty lord to take me without making the next day. I am not a sellout and I have no intention to sell my soul to anybody to feed my belly. You can name me anything you want I am bagging you don't call me WOYANIE OR SHABBIE.

As much as "our government" needs to be very cautious in not rushing and embarking on another costly, everlasting and devastating war; we "in the opposition" also need to be very careful in our approach…

We, more than ever, need ALL the political players in Ethiopia to come together and work in good faith in order to make our country and region a better place for all of us.

We, more than ever, need to listen to each other more than to outsiders.

It's time for us to show our True Respect to Ourselves as we are Divine.

It's time for us to show our True Respect to our Neighbors as they are Divine.

It's time for all "Big Travelers" around the world to come together and help our cherished Ethiopia.

More maturity and responsibility is expected from us, as this Government has proved to be reckless in more than one occasion...

The wise ones in Kaliti do not expect less from us; let us make them proud.

May the Love of our Country and the Light of our Faith in God lead us at this terrible juncture of our history...

May God bless you ALL my Proud and Rare people of the Horn...
