Ethiopia sent 1255 children to American families in 2007

Adoptions from Ethiopia is on the increase and in 2007, 1255 children were adopted by American families, according to a report by the New York Times. In 2006, the number was 732, an increase of 71%. China is still the most popular place for American adoption, followed by Guatemala, Russia and Ethiopia.

“Americans adopt more foreign-born children than all other countries in the world combined,” said Maura Harty, the assistant secretary of state for consular affairs. “As a Hague Convention country we can — we must — require reform and transparency in some countries or adoptions to the U.S. will stop.”

The report added that Ethiopia did not sign the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption which the United States will ratify tomorrow.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ADOPTIVE PARENTS:

Source: State Department

According to country information page of State Department, here is the eligibility requirement for adopting parents. "The Ethiopian government prefers to place children with married couples who have been married for at least five years. In general, single persons under age 25 may not adopt, nor may openly gay or lesbian individuals or couples. However, the Ethiopian government has occasionally approved cases involving persons in all of these categories".

This huge change from last year. I am sure this has to do with Angelina Jolie. It's great to see some many Americans are opening their homes to assist our children. Now, think like AGAM said if all Ethiopians can help our orphans... how wounder would that be to see our own people becoming part of the rebuilding process in Ethiopia... Just think about it again... Be there for our people and make a differnce in child's life...

VIVA USA!
thank you.

Please STOP selling the children. I have seen a few on a plain myself and they did not look too happy.

This government needs to come up with a way to help these children and keep them home where they will be much happier.

And how do they know the people are not going to abuse them?

I have seen two white male parents taking a boy for adoption. This is dangers.

Do we know that Adoption in Ethiopia is
controlled by about 12 gagesters who are millionairs by selling children. I have enough evidence that no adoption agency is
required their acccount be audited. Today in ethiopian child market one child has a value of $10000. Sadly enough poor parents arepushed to sell their children by this savages. ?I personally know the person who sell childdren to France and his name is Assefa. Please stop maarketing our children. Ministry of Social affairs have to create a strong regultion.

It is so sad to see these children ended up in unknown family. No back groud check, No trace... just disappeared . We are not sure if these children will not be abused or serve as a sex slaves. Children selling business in Addis is booming and some even bragged about it. Look what happened in Chad. Who is ging to trace this children's fate. For God's sake, please do not sell ethiopian kids for money, ask for donation money rather so they could live with their own people, their own culture and family. We should not bragg about this process as it is Shame Shame and Shame.

I don’t have with adoption process as such and I agree there should be a strict process for adoption and Ethiopian must work only with legitimate adoption agencies in the U.S.A , Europe or other countries. But I doubt that most of you are concerned seriously about the well fair of these children being adopted by Americans or Europeans. Ok. Let’s assume you concerns are legitimate and the adoption process is dropped. And what…? What are you going to do to help these kids from being starved? Or them being on street? Or them being sick? I hope you have asked yourself these questions before you post your comments. I live in the U.S. and I know several parents that adopted children from Ethiopia. I see them providing these kids a loving home, educate them and most of all give them a hope. A hope that one day they will grow up and become somebody. So, please stop this non sense and do your part.

THANK YOU! It's really nice of the caring families to take care of the children of Ethiopia. But the adoption agency should check that these children are not being abused or hurt by some uncaring parents. Ethiopia should make more improvements and institutions so the children of Ethiopia can help their mother country.

Hello, I am a visitor to this site, and also the adoptive mother of a child from Ethiopia. Please forgive me if this is not the forum to express this, but I am wiping away tears as I read these comments and I would like to offer my perspective.

First, thank you to everyone who has commented. I appreciate all of your concerns and views.

Second, I want to express that we are humbled and honored to be raising a child of Ethiopia. I am heartbroken to read about corruption. It is TERRIBLE to know this is happening. We have no reason to believe that this happened in our case, but we also confirmed our agency's information through an independent source to make sure. His life began in a way that no child's should, and I hope he one day will look upon his tragedy and his adoption with grace.

Third, it is my deepest wish that my child will see the love of his first mother shining through my every action toward him. I always kiss him twice, once from me and once for her. Ethiopia is his birthright, and we hold your country in the highest regard. To the Ethiopians reading, please know that this child has all of the love and opportunity that a family and community can offer. I hope you all will be as proud of him as we are because you are his family, too. And thank you to all of the kind people of Ethiopia who have given us advice, friendship, and blessings.

That is all.

My husband and I adopted our daughter from Ethiopia because God led us that way.

Everyone who adopts has to go through background checks from every place we have lived around the world. We have social workers come into our house and check us out before the adoption and after. We submit reports every year until she is 18yrs.

I want you to know that I love my daughter more than I can express and everything that I have is hers. I also know that if she was not adopted she would not be alive today.

If you want to help the children, sponsor them monthly. It costs so little and makes a huge impact. We do.

I am deeply touched when iread the message from two adopting parents .and I am glad for the boy and the girl who have these adopting families.God be with you.

we all know that there are many children in our country that they don't have any body to take care of them.most of them are from very poor parents and others are orphans.so adaption is one way to help these children .off course it is not easy for these children to leave their home country for the first time.however they will be compensated after once they started to get a family love from their adoptive parents ,brothers and sisters.

I hope we ethiopians also need to think and act how to help our children back home.may be by organizing our selves to establish and financing some orphanage centers in the country and by adopting them too.

god bless all the adopted children , their adopting families and their poor parents back home.

let god help ethiopia and her people.

It's cool. I am in the West right now, but I would love to adopt a child from my homeland seeing that my wife and I will probably not have one naturally- anytime soon for that matter. There are good and bad people in the world as well as good and bad parents. Let's just all pray the children get to homes of parents that truly love them. Z-Mike and others said it best when the point was made that Ethiopians at home can do alot by giving these children homes. We'll do our best to get the ones they miss. A true team effort!

You might be a good person who wanted to help a child who is less fortunate from the first day of his/her birth. But the fact remains that the Ethiopian government ruling party which is dominated by a one time communist rebels from the Tigray region is engaged in selling childrens using the so-called adoption agency controlled by its members. Some of the children were taken away from their mothers at the point of the gun. This is the sad story.

I'll not be surprised to hear Ethiopia becoming a major destination for international child molesters. Except anything from Woyanne mafia run Ethiopia.

"However, the Ethiopian government has occasionally approved cases involving persons in all of these categories"."

To all of the adoptive parents of Ethiopian children, congratulations on your journey to parenthood. Adoption is a long and arduous process, but is well rewarded. I believe that these children are blessed to have the opportunity to have able parents.

“My husband and I adopted our daughter from Ethiopia because God led us that way”.

MOMTO2,

Thank you very much for loving/caring and assisting my people including yours {the one you had already adopted} I know exactly what you’re talking about… My wife and I have a lot of friends who adopted children from Ethiopia and we could not be any happier known these families and assisting them how to make {Ingera and doro wet} so the kids would sometimes eat habesha food… One of our great friends got in love with Ethiopian orphans so much and they ended up adopting 5 kids. And they are going for 1 or 2 more in the near future…. In addition, they are funding {assisting about 270 kids in Ethiopia}. To us, known this family made us feels honored and changed our hearts forever {for good}…The story goes on and on in the town where my family and I live…

My wife and I currently have one child and we’re currently working with an adoption agency that is doing the “home-study” for us to adopt children from ETHIOPIA. With the help of our friends who have opted out from using adopting agency and doing private adoption. As soon as the “home-study” is complete we plan to submit it along with I-600A to INS in our area and upon completion, we’ll travel and adopt 3-kids…

Again MOMTO2, I’d like to say thank you for your humanity and don’t pay any attention to some of the people who are attempting to make cheap politics out of this adoption subject. In fortunately, we live in a world where someone has to oppose everything even when it’s in the best interest of the child(ren). Keep up your good work… {I love you for loving my people}. I hope you will continue to assist more kids and adopt more in the future.

Take care,
Z-Mike

It is not true that Ethiopians don't adopt children as it is suggested by AGAM. No other people on earth adopt children most than Ethiopians themselves. Most AIDS and other orphans are adopted inside the country. This time we need the help of outsides since the orphans of the colossal HIV/AIDS problem are beyond that we can handle.67 years of loose and moraly wicked life style in Ethiopia is the main source of this devastation. Multiple sexual partners, bars with prostitutes in every corner serving Ethiopian and several thousands of educated girls selling their bodies to Arabs, Africans and Whites is the main reason that AIDS has become the calamity in Ethiopia.

Dear All,

First of all, I would like to thank those non-Ethiopian parents who adopted Ethiopian babies and gave the love and protection the kids were unfortunate to find it from their own parents or other Ethiopians.

However, I have great reservation when it comes to giving Ethiopian babbies for adoption by foreigners, whether they are famous, rich or not.

No Ethiopian who left his/her motherland is doing well, whether they left through adoption or other ways. Look the suffering Ethiopian teenagers who were brought to Cuba during the Derg regime. They suffered so much in their life away from home...Ethiopia. All of them regret that they were sent to foreign lands and people, all of them choose if they were left to face all the challenge in their country.

What about our brothers and sisters in Israel? Theirs is also the same..a life of discrimination and subjugation by the white jews.Ethiopians in Israel are the ones who have a high suicidal rate in Israeli society.

Ethiopian gov't should be able to keep our proud citizens with us back there in Ethiopia. The well-to-do Ethiopians need to start adopting babies who need protection.

In addition, the gov't needs to establish a fund whereby parentless Ethiopian babies are taken care of and schooled in camps in various region around the country. There should be such camps in, at least, every zone of each state of the federation. The fund needs to be supported by money from state and federal gov'ts, donations from local and diaspora citizens as well as other nations and not-for-profit organizations who support the cause.

Adoption by foreigner should be the last resort. These days, it is hard to find innocent citizens unaffected by sexual lust among the westerners. Even pastors in the west are molesting and raping babies/boyy as reported by international media and court records. There are more sex related law suites in the west than other matters combined. We have to see this danger when giving away Ethiopian babies to the weserners.

PEACE.

It has been a few years since we adopted, so I did a quick search to see how many US agencies are now licensed in Ethiopia and found 15. This is up substantially from the 5 or so that existed when we went through the process. I do not represent any agency, but you can e-mail or call them to find out exactly what their fees are. In our case, we paid substantially less than the 10k quoted above in agency adoption fees. Our largest single expense was travel.

Terrible corruption and evil people exist. There is information on the US Dept of State page about how to report this, and I believe there is also a Children's Commission in Ethiopia that oversees these issues. In working with a reputable agency, it has been our experience that these babies and children are in dire need. When we adopted, many of the babies received by the orphanage tested positive for at least HIV antibodies, most suffered from malnutrition, fevers, and breathing problems, and a few died while we were waiting to travel. Many of the children, including our own, have required immediate and ongoing medical care upon arrival in the United States.

Yes, Ethiopian families would be best for Ethiopian children. Congratulations to those of you who are considering adoption. Actually, it would be best if there was no need for adoption. As mentioned, we, like many adoptive families, send supplies and money for programs that allow children to stay with extended family when possible, to build schools, to support HIV+ children, to educate women, and to help children with special needs. We volunteer for and support social programs in our own country as well. If you inquire with an agency, please ask what they do to provide assistance and how it is funded.

There is a book called, "There Is No Me Without You." I recommend it to anyone who would like to know more about international adoption from Ethiopia.

There was also a comment about adoptions of children from the USA to other countries. Yes, this does happen! I believe that many of them go from American foster care to Canadian families in particular.

Finally, thank you to all who have posted. I stumbled upon this blog when I was searching for something else. I appreciate what has been said, as it has led us to research more about issues in Ethiopia. And a special thank you to those who open their hearts to families like ours. Our children need you.

Hello,

to all those who are posting without much thought, please have some sensitivity...don't post for the sake of posting. Have you not had any family member that has died of AIDS or lives with AIDS? I do (both). this is a major issue, as you well know. it is more than a major issue. People are alive one year and dead the next... i don't need to tell you what AIDS is doing.

Now, most of these children are AIDS orphans, meaning they do not and will not have your chance at a normal life with a father and a mother. Think of every single experience you have had with your parents (good or bad) and then think about these kids: they will never have that. They have already faced the greatest sorrow of losing their parents, if you could help them avoid future sorrow and chigir, would you not? if you have a younger sister or brother, and they were put in a similar position, would you not want them to have somebody to take care of them?

It is true that the children going to American families is a sad thing. I myself know a few adopting families and i do feel sorry for the kids... that they are living in a family that is different from what they were born into. But the fact is that they are at least taken care of, loved and tiru feet aytew yadgalu. and hopefully, they will be raised so that they will be connected to their country forever.

Now, I do think it would be best if Ethiopians themselves started adopting children. but unfortunately, we don't have the mentality for adoption. Personally, i myself would very much like to adopt one day but i, too, don't have the strong mentality and determination that adopting families have.

So, to wrap up, please be aware that this is a serious and personal issue for most Ethiopians (and Ethiopian-loving people) and not something that you can talk about easily for the sake of talking. please tinish initezazen. Thank you for reading and best of luck to all.
