Something Ethiopia's Prime Minister Did Not Say

Letter To The Editor

Friday, July 13, 2007; A16

The Washington Post

The June 29 news story "Ethiopian Premier Admits Errors on Somalia," by Stephanie McCrummen, mischaracterized remarks made by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. The article stated that the prime minister said that "his government 'made a wrong political calculation' when it intervened in Somalia," implying that he declared Ethiopia's involvement in that country a mistake. The video record demonstrates that he said no such thing.

The only political miscalculation referred to by the prime minister was Ethiopia's optimism that Somali clan leaders who backed radical elements in the Islamic Courts Union would readily honor their commitment to a peaceful political settlement. Also, in the prime minister's words, the extremist forces made a military miscalculation in assuming that Ethiopia's withdrawal of roughly two-thirds of its troops would not leave a credible deterrent force.

Ethiopia 'warns' The Washington Post (Walta)

Your paper's erroneous reporting is of major consequence because it mischaracterized the position of the Ethiopian government on a matter relevant to peace and security in the Horn of Africa, U.S. foreign policy in the region, and the broader war on terrorism. The U.S. news media's coverage of Africa is already limited, and reporting such as this only adds to the inaccurate and often distorted picture of the challenges faced by my government and others in the region.

What is funny about this vedio is that the first version of it had this, I have seen it. However, with in a fraction of hours, walta took it off the original version and reposited by editing that point. It is amazing how they posted the first version w/out properly editing it; the ETV buchilas didn't do their job. and now they want us to believe he didn't say that.

Dr Samuel, I wish u didn't join this farcing party; better if u had stayed with ur respected job as a professor, with your Plato book.

Uzawa

Well! That says it all, doesn't it?. For us Ethiopians, it is extremely important that, we are well informed about our countries welfare in the international arena, in order for us to make a just and educated decision to have our say. It is greatly essential to scrutinize and asses where and from whom the news is coming. There is no as such a thing descent and fair reporting or analysis, in this day and age. As our interest grows on our countries international roll, the awareness and research in facts from that of deceptive and erroneous reports must and has to be to the highest level as well. We can not play dam and naive, to those reporters who are deceptive, morally and ethically unfit to be in a position they are, from the first place any way. Their agenda is to promote specific agenda to their constituency by political affiliation or by simply being a sellout and corrupt and therefore it is our responsibility to separate a fair and balanced reporting from a byes and precarious reporting.

Samuel Assefa is an Ambassador not because he is qualified for the job but because he is a loyal banda like Andreas Eshete who will stand by the killer Melese Zenawi.Ato Samuel,What did you do before you came to the US? you are good for nothing.I even doubt you have a phd.

He is politically bankrupt, philosophically empty, oportunist, idiologically confused, loyal to washington but not to the people of Ethiopia. Any body can tell from the picture that he is wagging his tail for the drops crumbs from George Bush. As much as he is trying to use Bushe's temporary foriegn policy, he will be dropped off on a station where the American global and regional policy changes pretty soon.He is an empty barrel making too much noise. His dead end is right on the corner.

This dude, the Ambassador, seems very happy >:XX given his physical gesture. He seems excited that his master is greeting him.

Well, he needs to get over it. What the midget said is clear and simple. He miscalculated what he was getting into because serving George Bush was his priority and he thought that the support of USA will do it for him. Big mistake!

Melez himself knows he is lying when he says that 2/3 of his troops withdrew from Somalia. When that happened except by the Media? All we know is that more TPLF troops were and are still coming to Somalia to find nothing but bullets fired at them.

Well, the TPLF propaganda can produce as much false information as they want to, but the reality on the ground is clear and simple. TPLF is loosing the fight and soon will be defeated.

I admire the Ambassador, Ato Samuel Assefa, for coming out and trying to hold a dialogue with us. I consider that to be a step in the right direction even though that seems to be the Ambassador’s own initiative rather the leaders of the TPLF regime who usually throw everyone that try to have dialogues with them in the Kaliti prison.

I also encourage the Ambassador to go a little bit further in admitting mistakes when there are mistakes. Providing all kinds of irrational alibi for all its actions is the trademark of the TPLF regime.

A miscalculation is a miscalculation in the overall plan of invading Somalia whether it be a miscalculation of the position of the Somali clan leaders. If one variable in the formula is screwed up, the overall result of the formula will also be screwed up.

Again, we admire you, Mr. Ambassador, for coming out trying to conduct a dialogue with us. Have a nice weekend, Mr. Ambassador!

If he has had any honesty at all!!! What we heard of him is that he practically begged for this post by going down to the level of serving as a private tutor to the primary - and secondary-school kids of the biggest woyane thug for years.

Come on folks. The ambassador is probably aptly qualified to get this post. Plus, go look at the US ambassadors throughout the world on the State Dept page; they are mostly Bush cronies, that's normal, you put people close to you as ambassador.

That said, Meles is a dictator, a leader of a bankrupt TPLF, so no matter what whom he assigns, then end game is that he is still a dictator. They now fight against the Post, the NYTimes and others; slinging mud at those reputable news organizations. Any day of the week, I will believe the Times over what the TPLF has to spit out. It's called reputation, one has it; the other doesn't know the meaning of it.

Tman, just because Dr. Samuel Aseffa happens to be working under a government that you don't approve of, does not mean he is illiterate, as you said

tman please understand, I do respect your political view and stand, however do not undermine those who does not agree with you. Ambassador Samuel is a distinguished scholar and therefore I disagree with you, that he is illiterate.

To tman, mike, Kid, Roofer: You are out of line to disrespect another Ethiopian. A brother, a son, a father to someone. Disagree with him but not call him names. We have learned better from those great patriotic generation of our forefathers and mothers.
Koster: he is not defending a killerbut representing Ethiopia. As an Ethiopian represented by the ambassador, are you a killer? Somebody has to represent Ethiopia in her time of darkness.
Tingrt: way, way out of line, man. How did you even think this when Fed up was just giving a compliment to the ambassador. Let us use this site to express ourself freely and not name calling. It serves no one.

what kind of diplomacy is that?

Dr Samuel's white lie is really frustrating.we all heard all together what prime minister has said. pm has said that we made political miscalculation that the clan leaders of somalia would follow and help us'HE GOVERNMENT OF eTHIOPIA CHAMPIONING THE SELF DETERMINATION OF THE PEOPLE did not even know the intrest of them!!At the end of the day not Knowing what to do made theto be in critical problem. What kind of moron government is it that they can't even lern from Iraq war?
any way, the ambassador in washington need not lie ,this is not diplomacy. In diplomacy at least you would exagrate the minor positive staff than just lying what any one could get from the file. this makes the ambassador's credibility, nobody will trust you any more from the host country.
by the way do other people know how dr samuel could become an ambassador? please readers refer back to the meetings of the addis ababa university instructors meeting in 2005.
see you guys.
