The GDP grew from $6Bil to $34 Bil. That is over five fold since the EPRDF took power. According the Economist and other economic institutes Ethiopia's economic growth is spectacular. But not for the illiterate diaspora politicians. Now we have surpassed Kenya and it will bring them a double digit sorrow. When we surpass Egypt they will commit suicide for sure.

[Surpassing Egypt will surely be a huge success considering that both countries have similar population size, but Egypt still has an economy more than 5 times that of Ethiopia. ]

No, not necessarily, May be in regards to poverty eradication, yes, but there other equally important things such as National security that needs as much GDP(purchasing power) as possible. it's just a matter of setting your priority based on circumstances. My surpriseis, most of Africa countries are getting a huge amount of assistance from the US and europian economic countries. There annual badget is not comng entirelly from internal capacity. Example Ethiopian assistance from EU and US increased in a much more fold since TPLF comes to power and at the same time Eygyt are getting an enormous financial assistance from the US. So I think we ar exagerating things in here. I don't mean there is no development but the development comes only through assistance and any body can do it. Any body even if an illiterateone will triplicate its budget if soft money comes. You can build hospitals, roads telecomes if there is some left overs from corruption. So no surprise ecause I know how much money we are getting from Westerners. I would be much happy if the progress was due to intenal innovation and through the hard work of my government.

What matters is the distibution not the accumulation of money at national level. Which part of our economy is growing? Agriculture(we are starving), industry(we are importing huge), service(only EAL). Ethiopia is richer in natural resources than Kenya, which would explain why Ethiopia along with its hard workers has the potential to be the strongest economy in Africa. Mr. Administrator, Please post comments/response more often. We love to hear from you. It will not be hard to surpass Egypt but it will take a long time. Ethiopia is in the right path but we need to invest much more in education - Gov't and especially the private sector needs to create serious jobs that can help increase the middle class in our country. The major advantages for Egypt is their proximity to Europe, Middle-east, the Mediterranean ocean and Red sea. They are perfectly situated to move goods into two large markets. They have also a well develop tourist industry that generates billions into the country economy. In addition, they are the 2nd largest foreign aid recipients from the US and they also get bigger funding and loan from EU. Even though, we hear too much about aid to Ethiopia in the news. Ethiopia receives far less (fraction of Egypt) in AID than many other countries, when we look at it per-capital.
Hopefully, we will be able to see our people and country grow to be prosperous and strong in our life time. We shall stop wishing the failure of our country and we need to work in solidarity to help her move forward. Many in the the diaspora community acting badly nowadays. It's time to look at ourselves from inside.

Incidentally, the biggest drawback among many Ethiopians including in the Diaspora is to acceopt good news for Ethiopia. It seems we are born only for negative news and feelings. Remember, Ethiopia had been almost in dark ages for over 20 years at a minimum (during the Derg era!). EPRDF may have made mistakes in the early phases of its rule, but learned from its mistakes much faster than the so called opposition groups.

Our country in the last 5 years is going truly into transformations (especially on the economic front). That is good news! We need to see the positive side and accept the results. However, we need to build and improve, because our country has a great potential. There is no need it should be poor. Many countries in the world have grown fast (w/o oil or mineral resources). In fact our country has rich resources (primarily its people) to grow and put poverty behind her once and for all.

But, we need to work together and most of all build positive thinking. Hope, aspirations and change come with positive thinking and internal spirit and conviction to say "Yes we can"! Yes, Ethiopia can become a rich country, even in our life time.

I believe with all their weaknesses and mistakes, EPRDF leaders also deserve the credit for bringing that light of hope and confidence in our country, which around 20 years ago, many believed it is hopeless!

It is gratifying to see the Economist have good faith and write good story about Ethiopia!

Just remember that Ethiopia's population is almost three time more than Kenya's population. What makes it worse only few people (from one ethnic group) are benefiting the economic growth. 1- GDP=the total dollar value of all goods and services produced over a specific time period in a nation... It is private consumption+Investements+gov spending+(exports-imports)... which most of the components, except exports, in our case may be minimal or even absent. Do not forget the aid $$s too...

2- Per Capita is an approximation of the value of goods produced per person in a country equal to the country's GDP, in other words... divide GDP by the total number of people in the country.

I know all woyanes know that, thanks to google. But what most you jilenegers do not consider is what is GDP made up of, what it is used to measure. In a healthy economy, if we can call ours that, we will see low unemployment and wage increases as businesses demand labor to meet the growing economy. Do we see that in Ethiopia? NO. What we see is low living standards, high cost of living, very high inflation, the birr not worth the paper it is printed on... where only a few can afford to pay for the bus, taxi to get to wherever in a nation where a once 0.15 machiato costs 2br and has become a luxury item. Debunking the myth that Ethiopia's GDP "just became better than that of Kenya" Looking at the World Bank data (World Development Indicator), it’s false to say that Ethiopia’s GDP became better than that of Kenya for the first time in 2010 (a misleading story on Nazret.com). During the dictatorial Derg regime, Ethiopia’s GDP was much larger than that of Kenya (and also growing at a much faster rate than that of Kenya) – all throughout 1980’s while Ethiopia was waging bloody internal wars, in the mist of a biblical famine and under extreme socialist system. Ethiopia’s GDP made a nose dive downwards in 1992 when terrorist TPLF took power in Addis Ababa – the downward trend during terrorist TPLF’s reign gave Kenya the advantage to be the biggest economy in east Africa. Therefore, even though Ethiopia’s GDP was much better than that of Kenya during the Derg regime, that alone had not made Derg any democratic. In other words, GDP size has no relation to whether a regime is repressive or democratic; it is possible for undemocratic and absolutely authoritarian regimes, such as the Derg and the terrorist TPLF, to have a bigger GDP size than any relatively democratic country. On top of that, most of the money that has gone into the Ethiopian economy in the last 18 or so years has been coming from billions of dollars of aid money and remittances from the Ethiopian diaspora. Putting aside the billions of dollars that the West has been pumping into the country to sustain the TPLF in power, we can imagine only the tens of billions of dollars of remittance dollars that have never been accounted for properly when we talk about the Ethiopian economy. With some conservative estimates, there are close to a million Ethiopians currently living outside their country. Here, I would take the liberty to ask each of us in diaspora to do a little arithmetic. Just if each of us takes how much we send back annually on average for whatever reason and multiply that by one million, it would easily run into billions. Where is all that money going to? There are very very few Kenyans that leave outside Kenya and therefore there is very little, if any, remittance money that goes into the Kenyan economy. The aid money from the West to Kenya is at best a fraction of the money handed out to Ethiopia which is by far the top recipient of aid money in Sub-Saharan Africa due to its incredibly deep level of poverty and huge population size. It should not be surprising if the GDP grows or falls under democratic governments or repressive regimes. What makes the two different is the OPPORTUNITY COST. If we estimate the opportunity cost on Ethiopia and its people due to the repressive and terrorist rule by the terrorist TPLF in the last 18 years, it easily runs into hundreds of billions of dollars. It is not doubtable that HaileSallaise and Mengistu has brought progress with in that time frame of the world. If it is so that is simply creating first, second class citizen in which one has supreme and illegal control over the other. Such country do not have future as history show us. I do not support such trend despite the new of growth in Ethiopia.

8 years ago I was in Ethiopia, and I was amazed at the changes taking place in every sector of the economy in every region, up to village level, for that matter. Trust me, the change I witnessed is still dizzying me, it is like some audacious dream miraculously comin true. Here is a bit of reality Ethiopians. While there is significant growth in the economy, the Birr is over valued in its current rate. I assume buffered by the dollar. Reality is that Ethiopia has grown, but the numbers are based on an over valued birr. Kenya far surpasses Ethiopia and the GDP says a lot and even 900 for Ethiopians on an inflated birr is something to worry about. But this is very good news for Ethiopia, hope we can see more growth like this.

I live in the Diaspora and I don't feel any kind of the symptoms that were described above (no burning of my stomach, crying, or jealousy I actually feel great) lol I am happy for even a half a percent of growth for my country but I am a bit more sceptical on the numbers then most of you guys I guess. You can't really blame me when the % of growth, inflation etc. is different from different sources of information. That being said I still think this is a good achievement. I just hope the government works more on population control so people’s income per capita would go up as well. Just like someone stated spending on defence is mandatory we should allocate a % of this growth to do massive national education on population control because if we continue to grow at about 2.5% annually (almost same as Kenya) it will take us a long time to grow the middle class and eradicate poverty.

Not necessarily. It might or might not, but it is a good thing anyway.

Think of it as a 10 member family getting 100birr per yr, that will be the gross, and percapita will be 10birr. Now if the family gets 150birr the next yr, the gross grew by half, but if they added some members and are 20 now the percapita will decrease by a quarter(7.5birr).

I dont really care about GDP growth - kenya had a nasty post election violence in 2008 - investment dipped, tourism and agriculture took a major dent and the economy is only now coming out of the doldrums. that we are registering any growth at all is god's grace. Besides, we are embarking on aggressive infrastructure upgrades (super highways and ICT) and are reoganising our politics with a new constitution - things will get worse before they pick up - that's what every kenyan knows. We have a vision for 2030 and are working towards it - in the meantime, all the other countries can overtake us all they want; instead, What i pray for is closer ties with ethiopia; it's a beautiful country and the 80million population will be a major boost for the east african common market - that's what i would tell menes if i had a chance to chat with him.
