Ethiopia Telecom slashes mobile SIM card prices

By Hayal Alemayehu

The Reporter

The Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) slashed the prices of mobile phone SIM cards as of Thursday, according to a statement the corporation sent to The Reporter.
The corporation made a 54 percent discount on the prepaid mobile phone SIM card to 169.10 birr while it reduced the different set of prices ranging prices from 1445.13 to 1171.13 birr paid for acquiring post-paid mobile phone SIM cards to a uniform price of 414.40 birr.

The corporation also lowered the price for replacement of lost SIM cards by 40 percent to 15 birr.

ETC took the move in a bid to attract more customers and expand its service as well as bring closer the tariffs paid for such services to that of other African countries, according to the corporation.

Currently there are more than three million pre-paid and post-paid mobile phone subscribers.

Is it me or ETC finally came out of its hibernation? We all had been saying it for a long time. Their existing price structure does not work in any country let alone poor Ethiopia. This is small but it's progress my friends...I hope they don't back it up with some stupid decision to make up for lost revenue!

Why not send a Telecomunication Weyannes Manager to Somalia to LEARN how fast their Tel. is working. There you can call 70% less than ethiopia price. These GIMMATAMS weyannes with NO education are blinding us to IT.

It is all well and good to slash the prices to “Attract more customers” but why attract more customers to an already over congested market that they simply cannot provide any level of quality service:?:

I have sat in the same room with my friend in Addis and tried to call him only to be told .........“Your party is not in the service area”!

Should they not be looking at improving the dismal and atrocious service they currently provide / can’t provide? :))

They also claim to be launching 3G service :lalala:

If they can’t get -1G service right how can they leap to 3G and have any hope to get it right ...

I don’t hate the game
I just hate the fakers :))

Orders probably came from new management team. All but one of ETC's entire management board was fired and replaced last year.

Welldone ET, It is about time for you understand how expensive your telecom products are. that is why only 3 million out of a population of nearly 80 million are connected. By reducing both local and international call charges you can connect more people and boost your income. This is a wise bussiness move.

It is time for ETC to reduced the price which has been one of the highest in the World. I myself have purchased about fourty dollars per sim card last year. EPRDF keep doing the right thing with improved better economic policy and good governence.

why not they distribute free sim cards to rural areas, if that was the reason they are not privatizing this stupid company.

This seems to be a result of the hard work of the so called " Destructive extremist vocal Diaspora." The "vocal diaspora" helps the poor Ethiopians. The Woyane cadres and hodams on the other hand don't. If it were upto these idiots, Woyane could have even increased the prices.

So I say, good job to the "Destructive Extremist Vocal Diaspora." Keep defending the poor Ethiopians.
