Ethiopia to open 10 new universities

Source: ENA

Ethiopia's Ministry of Education said construction of ten new universities would be launched in different parts of the country in the near future.

External and public relation officer with the Ministry, Deresse Getissa told ENA on Tuesday that the new universities would be constructed in Oromia, Amhara, Benishangul Gumuz , Tigray and South Ethiopia Peoples' states.

He said preparations have been finalized to launch construction of the universities and enroll students in 2003 E.C academic year.

The officer said the government has attached due attention for the expansion of higher learning institutions in the country.

Construction of the universities would create jobs for the local people

I don't know the state of the universities in other regions (specially in the north) but I visited some of the new universities in the central and southern part our country - or shall I just call it our country.

If Nazret.com would allow me, I can share recent photos of 'a university'. They say they are new but are already old; they are dirty and almost no facilities.

I just read from TPLF web site (Aiga) that "16000 Tigrean university students are currently involved in a Summer “Wufer Tebeges” Campaign" -- ahha. There are more than 16000 university students from Tigray.

How many are there from Oromia, Amhara, Somali, etc by the way? Even if there were as many, most of those will go to those so called new but already rotten universities.

ENA - you bunch of idiots!
I must say I am looking forward for the day that "they" are gone, and the quicker, the better!

Actually, more and more I feel I don’t care if the country splits up; disintegration may not be bad at all than endless tribal troubles. Each region will do better than now - except the parasitic one.

Ayeresu, Zora,

You guys it is high time you start being reasonable and balanced. You are making fools out of yourselves. These are universities for the nation whether they are in Tigrai, somali, or Afar - are u joking or you are sharing with us your best. My question to you, what would you do if you were given government leadership in Ethiopia today? butcher all Tigreans and develop your village? Ignor Afar, Somali and other communities and making ethiopia equal to Amhara or Oromo? Why are u worried so much about Ethnicity and behave like doom prophets?
Ayeresu, have u ever gone to any university for studies by any means? What you are saying is hopeless!! You are good for nothing and that is why for years you will say much more and Ethiopia will continue as a nation.

You guys Tigreans are really ruling you such that you even don't spend a minute without insulting or wishing them bad luck. They are working and you are barking. For Afars, their time has been better but I still would like better government than the current one!!
You have to embark on working for you country in inclusive way and in a better ways, guys.
If you want to separate yourself from Ethiopia - the sooner the better but you can't and that is why u r washing dishes there. It is not about day dreaming, guys neither about hatred.
About the quality - I really share the idea. As a country, our future lies in the quality and coverage of our education and the content of our education should solve our problems and should encourage our aspirations.
Ethiopia, move on - let sycophants bark and bite themselves. Let them cry blood.

Afari Sifari - Ethiopia my love!!

Dear friends,
Governments world over have problems even where you are working or living so be human and don't create animosity by your irresponsible comments about the good things others have done without doing a drop of any good. What you are doing is not politics but preaching of division!!

The regional governments in wherever you come from in Ethiopia buy extremely expensive cars in excess and steal the money for themselves and you guys blame Tigrean for nothing. If your own people can steal from your own people - why are you guys sick about Tigreans - that strengthens them because they know you hate them and the will work accordingly.

The problem with such philosophy is = it will never help our country in any way. It wouldn't help your health or your heathens (your supporters) at all.Let us grow.
In Afar literally, a lot of money is corrupted and taken away by local leaders who were entrusted for local development - surely is it appropriate to be alcoholic in blaming Tigreans for our problems without doing our homework?

Good judgment takes a lot of hardwork and emotional sacrifices.

Good job - is the building of more universities. commendable.

This is a sheer propaganda scheme to divert the international as well as local attention
In fact out of 10, one is not accomplished properly.
So or so the money goes to the bandit Woyane clique.
There is no standard university at all in Ethiopia.
Under Woyane masters degree is equivalent to HIM (haileSelassie high school graduate)
bachlers degree(HaileSelassies 8th grade finisher).
The is no quality as such under this ignorant guirella fighters.

I wonder how many universities in Ethiopia meet global standard expectations, or how many students and teachers would pass if the standard proficiency examination offered? My point is building universities without the basic facility will be just a number, nothing else!! No electricity, no bathroom, no books (science), SW, HW, library facility, research centers (for graduate and undergraduate students), no qualified instructors, and it doesn’t meet even the African university standers, so what is the point of having 100 universities, or 10, or one..? Quality has to come first! Universities are not “boutiques”

Despite the fact that we appreciate expansion of institutions,The first question that this govt must think is How effective the institutions are!and what innovative people are created out of these institutions.
As we know most of the recently built institutions are of with many Dislocations in human power, basic facilities let alone advanced scientific equipments.
so building many 'yechika bet'like institutions with out having nothing to process what is coming in(the students)and equip them ,is by far as disadvantageous as wasting resources.
The Ethiopian government must stop doing things like 'ye kaka chewata'against his people just for show up.I would rather prefer the government add more budget for the already built institutions so that they atleast will have some of the basic needs that an institution at least must minimum have!

Tigress, Afari Sifari, other insulters…

Your response is the same, I don’t mean the two of you but all of you. It looks as if someone whispers in your ears. It seems you have your own communication network.

Honestly, when someone complains about the unfairness in our country [ ‘ours’ is a tricky word here], your response is:
1) Yes … we are developing because we are hard working, intelligent, etc
2) Ten you say, ‘ahha you are an Interhamwe’, or something like that ..
3) And then comes your barrage of smear and insult.

Let me say a few words about these three behaviour of yours:
1) If development in Ethiopia is a ‘function of’ being hard working, then the Gurage’s are known to be the most hard working and also the most clear in dealing with money – they say. Well, we know they are decimated! – in business terms. Let me tell you, no ethnic group is more hard working, cleaver or otherwise than another inherently. If you think like that you must be Nazi’s.

2) No one wants to do genocide, directly like the Interhamwe’s or indirectly like TPLF (not only now but even long time ago TPLF actually starved many Tigians by diverting aid food and robbing aid trucks and selling it all in Sudan and setting up business there). The end of the genociders is always bad.

3) I never mind the bad words to me – the smears and the like. Because, we are not kids. Moreover, my audience is not you. I inform my compatriots [I don’t know if you are my compatriots]. I know how powerful information is.

But there is a way out. If we stop insulting, if we – the people - inform ourselves, have civilized conversation, open up our hearts and try to be fair and good, then our problems will be solved. But I think time is running out – fast.

It is good news! However, it is no mystery that basic and even primary education of women changes a whole society within one generation. This is per economical study. Education of women should be encouraged if we want development. Educated women are more likely to have less children (means less poverty for family). Educated women are more likely to make sure their children are educated. Educated women are likely to earn a better living. I wishe it was cumpulsory to educate girls first and then increase the age girls are getting married in the rural areas to 17 or 18. If our country focused on education, it would create a cultural revolution. Would help us to think and assess issues rather than rely on werre bicha...

The idea is great. If Ethiopia can afford to do that I see it as a good thing. However, there must be something called standard.

In reality, these institution better called colleges. There is difference between university and college. University is big institution which can have several colleges within it. Probably all these new colleges could have been under one big university.

If Ethiopia has to be competitive in science and technology it should focus on quality of education rather than quantity. At the same time for a country like Ethiopia who is starving for educated leaders it might be good idea to have many colleges who can train young experts such as extension agents to serve as bridges between growers and science and research.

My final verdict on this one is that it is good if it is functional. It must not be some thing like for numbers only or for propaganda purpose. You can name all mud houses a university and then what? Over all better than nothing.

For over 50 years Ethiopia had one university with capacity of 5,000 students at most, mainly for the privileged Neftegnas and their son’s only. The reason for the abject poverty in Ethiopia today can actually be traced to this discriminatory policy of the regimes that favored few amaras now barking everywhere when access to university education has become an entitlement to all Ethiopians without distinction of creed , tribe or religion. Frankly speaking we need about 40 universities (at least 1 for each 2million people). So the government’s blue print for education is the way forward to extricate the nation from age-old poverty. Quality will improve over time and step by step. India also passed through the same stage in the not-to-distant past. Government should double the effort to change Ethiopia and forget discards of the past era. It is a chronic disease; some are conditioned to spit hate and not to appreciate anything.

Today suddenly you become mute? or maybe you should remove that muzzle from your mouth reeking with cheap alcohol and profusely express your admiration how swiftly the country is moving ahead.

Please use exploding adjectives such as Fantastic..Unbelievable.. Unheard of .. Be honest with your deep feelings and explicitly write your admiration about Meles Adm. Put aside your envious outdated politics and give credit where and when it is due.

It is like there is some kind of seismic shift in our beautiful land from North to South ... from East to West things are shaking and moving ahead and we are not waiting for our Burtukan to give birth to another illegitimate son

One more thing the current government should do is to create some kind of an ombudsman office in every major city to check and balance the nepotism and all kind of complaints against Government. If these offices are properly functioning then all complaints should be resolved in more democratic way.
Another thing the government should start creating more jobs for our graduates
Yo Meles I just hope you are listening to me. I know I am still too young but I am full of ideas that should be implemented in the country to shut the mouth of the very soon expiring Diaspora oldies

Let’s say the concept of having a multiple educational institutes in every part of the country is the way to go to progress. However, building institutions involves permanent cost of operation, modern college facilities, employee salary, maintenances and utility expenses …etc, considering all this the first question is where did the money come to fund all this (Ministry of Education)? The previous discussion about the unfairness of budget distribution is a clue that eventually budget is going to be a big issue. So the question is who is going to fund the expense? What are the long term plans and quality of the knowledge? Why is it necessary to open 10 colleges at one time? Just curious!! By all means I am not being distractive.

My only problem is, wouldn't it be better if we start from the bottom and build up. With the 10 new to be built, Ethiopia will have 31 universities. Mind you we have comparable number of colleges, very few privet universities and numerous privet colleges. I think it would be smarter and more practical to strengthen our elementary and high schools and also literate the rural community.

Being a second populous country in Africa, there is a desperate needs to build as much unversity as we can.

Although such mass based approach will compromise quality in the short run, it will create a healthy competition among graduates and universities so that the society will benefit from it.

In the past, tertiary education was only for the luckiest few who ridicule their society because they got that chance. But as the number of universities increase, the chance of entering there will broaden. Besides, we start to get large number of gradutes who use their education/knowledge as a weapon to get their society out of the vicious poverty circle.

Hope most of our farmers in the future will be university graduates who are specialists in seed selections and irrigations.

I can see light for my country at the end of the tunnel.

Hi all. I have never seen such a big junk of comments and ideas on the blogs before. I just went through them very roughly but, if not all, most are negative and fail to understand the need of educated people in Ethiopia.
I think we need universities. No single university in the world has ever started its life with all needed resources and qualities. This is just the beginning and we have to optimistic. I understand the distribution of these universities may have not been fair and need to orient the needs of the region. I am sure the infrastructures will drain money from the government to the good start instead spending somewhere in the Somali desert or Eritrean boarder when in fact we are sick of war. I am still optmistic that these universities will grow, develop and make a significant contribution to the economy of the country and the well-being of the indiviaduals (Ethiopians, I mean). Let us wait and see rather than running into blind conclusions.

Yeager Lij,

I have been advocating that in order to eliminate poverty the Government has to confront and fight two front lines. One accelerate economic growth, the second one is family planning. Your suggestion is part of the family planning for long term reducing population growth and increase females work forces by encouraging them to go to school and graduate with Diploma and degrees. One of the factor will contribute female incremental participating in school is as the countryside become more urban cities kids go to school in early age. I think Ethiopia has a good chance most of rural areas become urbanized as economic progress motorized in every corner of the county after most of the planned Dams completed. Mean time, the Government should ask teachers, students, churches and mosques, radio, TV, print news papers, union employees and other organizations in the country to participate teaching family planning not to have kids beyond their economic means to send them to school or raise them properly and the less kids they have in each family the more healthier to the household in general and good for the country to advance in every sector of the economy and the country can reach to middle class families as the western country life.

Speaking of quality of education, I wish the parliament adapt English as the means of communication for the Federal Government and native languages for each region. Kids are spending too much time on different languages. They should study just two languages native and English. MEDREK party manifesto stated that they include Oromia as another national language which is Latin Ethiopian kids to study four languages and expected to master all of them and learn other fields in English. This absolutely crime against the nation and it is very irresponsible act to serve those leaders to get some votes on the expense of the country in long term problems.

As you stated you hate Tigray and Tigrigna language. I do have the same feelings about Amharic language not to be thought in class in other region of the country. English should be the national language common to all of us and will be the unifier and accelerates our integration as one society. But I do not hate Amhara people or the language. My point is Amharic should be for the Amhara people as Tigrigna is for Tigray people. If you hate other ethnic groups as you stated it, then you can not have one Ethiopia united country. Your attitude will drive others to seek their own state as independent country instead of living in hat rage in one fake country.

Remember, if you want to be loved by others, you must love others otherwise you will be treated as you treat them.

It is simple,
Halafi Mendgedi, don't worry. If we separate each one will gain something but all of us will loose something.

Afar people will unite from Eritrea up to Djibouti and will be a big rich nation.

But unity is better and i support it and Amharic can unite us - if people don't want - let them go to hell.

All have blood in their veins and not water or milk, if we fight - that is the logic, they know it, we know it.
Unity is a choice.
Afari likes one Ethiopia - our diversity is our beauty and source of strength.

Most of those who are lecturer with this cGPA are weyane cadres who spent their time in university through multiple probation (i mean by earsing their D's and F's), their apparent cGPA is greater than 2.0 but their really cGPA is less than 1.75. First these cadres are employed as adminstrative workers in different university for couple of months and finally they end up as lecturer and compete with others for their graduate study which favours them to join as they have membership cards! Fake TPLF they do everything for deception. In these new universities there is no course how to create liberation front. Such as Mekele People Liberation Front, Adwa People Liberation Front, etc. That is your next step.

It is important to teach students how to form districts liberation front. It will be easy if the course will be given at university level.

Dear kibrom [Visitor],

As you already may know, Doctor of Philosophy (abbreviated, PhD, Ph.D., or alternatively, DPhil (meaning "teacher of philosophy") or Research Doctorate [not to be confused with professional doctoral degrees like MD or DVM] is an advanced (and in many Anglophone countries, the highest) academic degree entailing a difficult and long years of intensive training and research in a wide array of disciplines under the different circumstances in the science and humanities with a different but highly demanding requirements as specified by the different universities in many different countries. Despite some variations in the specific institutional requirements and/or national educational policies, all trainings leading to a PhD degree basically involve completion of a prescribed amount of graduate courses (coursework), high-level independent scientific research with a truthful and original contribution to ones specific field of knowledge within the framework of academic excellence, presenting the new discovery or original contribution to science in a PhD thesis or dissertation form and subsequently, and a final “oral exam” or defense [referred in the UK and many other universities worldwide as a viva (from viva voce— by word of mouth)] to a panel of] examiners board.

Although not a universal requirement, a (2 – 3 years) Master’s degree [which may also be awarded “in passing” or “in course” based on the graduate work done in the course of achieving the PhD] in a related field [with sufficiently high grades and proven research ability] is a usual requirement often demanded of applicants by a number of universities as part of the requirement for enrollment into a PhD program. Often symbolizing the zenith of one’s success in his/her academic career, validation of a PhD degree usually requires 3-5 (and at times, even more) years after the Master’s degree or up to 10 years after a Bachelor’s degree depending on the field of study and curricular specifications of the universities. As could be surmised from these, the road to a PhD is not at all a smoother route but rather, one of exhaustive, draining, frustrating, and not uncommonly, even a confusing venture.

For academicians from developing countries like ours, not only rare are available opportunities for the pursuance of PhD training (especially when the undergraduate degrees of applicants are from local universities not recognized and/or accredited by international standardization institutions at odds with the high emphasis universities abroad often put this issue), but due also of the gloomy and less rewarding opportunities poor countries offer to such high-skilled intellectuals in terms of advancing their professional careers, make optimal contributions to the best of their level of training, as well as meeting their academic and social obligations under the existing realities of third-world countries all culminating in incurring a strong ‘push-force’ to a number of PhD holders who fail to return back upon completion of their studies abroad. As you well have surmised [and to the dismay of many], this partly or largely explains for the limited number of PhD holders [those with postdoctoral training (a sort of no man's land between being a student (though more independent that a student) and having an actual job (only involving a training contract of sorts, without the benefits of being faculty) is out of the question!] currently living and/or serving in the country [a number by far lower than Ethiopian PhD holders serving in various reputed universities and institutions abroad].

Though one of the most unfortunate and difficult situations the country had to contend with, such preferences for high-skilled Ethiopian PhD-holder to remain and/or serve in western universities is neither a new development nor is one of the best decisions of choice they make casually, but one of the natural attributes of human beings to seek for better opportunities and/or more satisfactions in life [indeed, contrary to the expectations of many, the only real-life rewards developing countries like ours offer to such highly trained and sophisticated intellectuals after their long years of arduous study is a series of life ordeals with a promise that extends to no further than winning them ‘certified recognition’ to just append those two letters (Dr.) singly, or if most lucky to also have an additional professional (MD/DVM) or honorary doctorate, doubly (Dr. Dr.) to their names, and being greeted publicly as a Doctor- sorry for the extreme negativity implied but that practically is the ground-zero reality] furthering the drift you implied by your first query [… how many PhD holder Ethiopia has living in the country?].

Another logical drift implied by your second query [and for a very good reason!] is the issue of junior and senior high school teachers filling university positions in the country except that you preferred to express this as one of a “probability” which I would prefer to express as one of “inescapable realities” given the large number of the newly opened universities over the past few years and the responsibilities therein of meeting their institutional obligations and responsibilities albeit below expected standards. There also is a comforting issue to consider: with the more or less general limitations in supportive training resource [teaching aids, reference materials, and/or facilities] in the extant (both old and new) universities in the country, the margin of difference in terms of delivery of training and quality issues attributable to instructors with different levels of academic qualification [whether a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and/or PhD degree holder] is more likely to be of minor significance [after all, even the pioneer universities of the country are far from adequate to accommodate instructors with PhD’s with the necessary provisions compatible with their highly-demanding levels of training and/or professional skills]. Mind you! I’m not saying that the quality of education doesn’t suffers with the low level of training of the instructors; just forwarding a pointing for consideration that this is a general and well recognized problem even in the few pioneer universities with little to no bearing or relevance specific to the newly opened universities per se. What is more, the bulk of instructors in the pioneer universities are MSc. holders with very few who made it to PhD [for the reasons mentioned above].

And finally, [unless I understood it wrongly for which I express my apologies in advance] the negative connotation entailed in your final note of remark about Jigjiga University also merits correction when perceived in these contexts. To add a note or two on this, against all oddities, Jigjiga University is one of the very few recently opened universities well recognized and appreciated for the stunningly rapid progress and advance it recorded even at its earliest stages of infancy [a reputation due the skills, experiences, and dedication of its administrative and academic staff]. What more, it is also one of the very few institutions [both old and new] with real causes to claim an unparalleled opportunity for further advancement and enormous potential for rapid progress over a relatively few years to come given its strategic location to serve an international center of excellence on Pastoralism and its modes of survival [which, by the way, is one of the main institutional missions and goals well emphasized and articulated in its establishment document] that is gaining increasing recognition and popularity among local, regional, and international academic and development institutions worldwide as one of the most efficient and adaptive modes of life under the most challenging real life situations.

With regards
