Ethiopia to test Turbine at Gilgel Gibe II

By Muluken Yewondwossen

Gilgel Gibe II the largest hydroelectric power station project, in Ethiopia's history comes on line with a trial test on Thursday.
The test by the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) will attempt to generate 105 megawatts from one turbine, a quarter of the four turbines' capacity.
The construction, which has taken four and half years, promises to curb the country's power shortage, EEPCo claims.

The main part of the project, the 25.9 km long tunnel was completed in early June this year. Out of the total cost of 373 million Euros, the bulk was budgeted for the drilling work. An additional 113 million Euros was spent on other works, including substations in Sebeta and around Gilgel Gibe I.

Transmission installation work connecting the two substations was also carried out. The transmitter has a capacity to load 400 kilo volts.

Out of the 373 million Euros, the Italian Government provided 220 million Euros via soft loan; the European Investment Bank gave a loan of 50 million Euros; and Ethiopia covered the remaining 103 million Euros.

The main contractor for the construction of the power plant is the Italian company Salini Costruttori, which constructed Gilge Gibe I. The plant was expected to become operational by 2008, but as a result of consecutive natural hazards, it was delayed.

An planned investment

The news is good and bad.

what is good is that for those who would like to hear propaganda would get what they want but the reality is that ....the governemtn is still a dreamer. It is nice to dream to have Gilgel Gibe I,Gilgel Gibe II

Gilgel Gibe III but my problem is that if there will not be enough water for all those Gibs' what will happen to all this investment ...Hell.....

Who knows may be the govenment has made a deal with "God" that the rain is not going to decrease.

Those who knows a little about globalwarming may not relay 100 per cent on hydroeletric power.

The govenment should invest on solar, wind, etc ...

thanks

"Gilgel Gibe III but my problem is that if there will not be enough water for all those Gibs' what will happen to all this investment ...Hell....."

Mike, it is inaccurate. The same water from Gibe I is used to run Gibe II and then eventually Gibe III. So we don't need much water as we use the water efficiently.

I agree with you, we also need to harness the other power options - wind and solar. Happy to know that our country is blessed with all sort of renewable energy

Cheers

I hope that encouraging news like the one above comes out of Ethiopia most of the time. We need to see achievements instead of failures, hope rather than despair, a move that will take our country a step forward rather than a step backwards, and a progress that will help us see the flicker of light at the end of the tunnel rather than the pitch darkness our people are living in for decades now.
The next move by the Ethiopian government, if indeed it is going to have any credibility, is to carry out free and fair elections, share power with the opposition, and open the door for cooperation rather than confrontation, because it is too obvious that a one-man play will not take our country far enough.

Yeah dealing with the future and with the global warming is nicer but having the best natural water Ethiopia is gifted is the Thing that EPRDF Gov't is achieving, Please Power sharing should not be done for the sake of power it has to be for change
Do you think Merara, . . .Siye are carriers of Change? for Siye it was long time over when he left meeting at Mekelle instead of formal resignation for merara Unthinkable Why? He thinks backward and promotes spliting even Eritrea Splited with Port becomes the Darkest land on Earth.

But Meles I really appriciate the some thing is better than nothing But He should follow those who are covered by EPRDF jacket but doing non sense in most areas of the Country including the Uiversities Presidents. Please take a detailed look in the big institutions. Having the entire employees of an Institution is much better that the single bull Officers who are doing non-sense in the name of their membership for EPRDF which put EPRDF in trouble last election. So EPRDF should take care of his/its members in office as I am a witness from One of the Universities in Ethiopia.

Thanks all!!

wind generating capacity is very limited in ethiopia ,you need min 4m/sec wind velocity to move the mill .the only place in ethiopia with this potential is around nazreth and in tigray region.the govt. recently sigend MOA with a french company to produce 120 MW power from wind, that is planting around 120 mills.it costs b/n 200 to 300 mill euro.. Gibe II with around 400 MW costs 200 to 300 million euro ..do the maths.
Solar energy in a big scale is not viable now, it costs too much,
that is why the govt is concentrating on hydropower i guss..

Meles said he would wipe out starvation, but he did not. Meles said he would interconnect the country with internet, but he did not. Meles said he would electrify the whole country, but he did not. Meles said he would provide the people with pipe water, but he did not. Meles has said on and on, but he did not do any of the things he promised. He is an outright liar; the Ethiopian people do not trust him. He amassed a lot of weath to himself only.
