Ethiopia - Top 10 Ethiopian Websites for 2009

nazret is pleased to announce the annual list of the ten most popular Ethiopian websites for 2009. The websites considered for the rankings are all news websites with a primary focus on Ethiopia. We have used the three most popular and freely available website traffic analysis services, Quantcast, Alexa and Compete. But most of these services fall prey to one core problem – they don’t have a way to directly measure the traffic on the websites that they’re monitoring, with the exception of Quantcast which allows sites to embed code to get an accurate reading, but this only works for websites that have opted in. nazret.com has opted in with Quantcast to have the traffic directly measured. Alexa measures the popularity of a website based on the combination of average daily visitors and the number of page views in the past three month. One shortcoming with Alexa is it only measures visitors with the Alexa toolbar installed in their browsers. Compete estimates site traffic and engagement metrics based on the daily browsing activity of over 2,000,000 U.S. Internet users. So each tool has its own methodology and no single tool is perfect, so we have presented the results from all three services.

Quntcast which allows webmasters to embed a code on their websites to directly measure the traffic ranks nazret.com as the number 1 ranked Ethiopian website, ranking 21,780 in the world. This is based on a directly measured data by Quantcast. Compete.com, another website ranking tool also ranks nazret.com as the most popular Ethiopian website for 2009.

Good for nazret, but I have serious resevertions about ER and Mr. Kifle for couple of reasons. First, his stuff is all all about sky is falling. It is more polarizig and way negative voice and if many folks feel that that way then way god helps Ethiopia as we know. Second,his modus operandi is very predictable as he always tries to fish like minded opinios. No different point of view is tolarated at any measure and it like Melez's dictator in cyber world who rules one. The man is typical megalomaniac with inflated ego bigger than New York size. Third, if you read between the lines of topics,the man is either under the Afwork spell or some how a typical and deceiful Erit smart ass. No wonder that Erits had always out smated than average other habesha.

As for nazret.com even though you have a better ranking, you don't have to consider yourself a good source of news. Rather understand that there are no better sources to inform and educate our fellow Ethiopians.

If you are honest for yourself, you have to be sad. Starting from your website you don't have a good website,for that matter do you even remember the last time you discussed with in your staff about the structure of your website?

You don't even use twitter , facebook, or any other social media. I guess you think there are not much Ethiopian using social media networks.

Have you ever thought about better way of monetizing your website?

This is not to discourage you guys, no matter what, you have been a better source of information and for that I applaud. I am sure you will do better next year and we expect better. I wish you success. Being online since 18-Jan-2000 shouldn't be in vain!!!

Congra nazret. I am very surprised there are still people who regularly visit Ethiopianreview and Ethiomedia.
Once I visited ethiomedia I tried to click on links which were tagged as a sourse file. Where ever I clicked it takes me to there own page. I can't belive that they selectevely cut and pasted from sites such as BBC, CNN to suite their stupid idea. This shows how they are so unconfident that they even know that once you get away from their site you will never go back again. I feel sorry for the stupid diaspora who is still trapped in ethiomedia in the 21st century.

dear nazret, I am a Libyan who through events happened to know a lot about Ethiopia including it's language, and I managed to set up a website to pursue Libyan interest under the cover of the name "Ethiopia". would that make my website Ethiopian website even if the content of my site is not only anti- Ethiopian but pro-Libya. bear in mind, I am talking about 'content' here. When one do a traficcing analysis, shouldn't they consider the uncontrolled ads and popups that are running?
I mean what is so special about Nazeret and ethiopianreview?
When opening these websites you will face dozons of popups and other stuffs rolling around. I am not a computor technician but I am aware that these ads and popups could influence the calculations you made.

you should be honest especially when you start to compare with other popup free websites.

Once again congratulation for your success. However even by Alexa’s own account, Nazret was way ahead of ER last year (correct me if I am wrong). Contrary to that this time you are behind. What caused this reverse? I understand the explanation you provided and I do have Alexa’s tool bar installed on my web browser and I am a frequent visitor here. I am not sure if I am biased but It is a bitter reality to swallow seeing ER ahead of Nazret by any one’s measure or ranking.

As far as I am concerned ER houses one lonely & crazy lunatic (you know who), then there shouldn’t be comparison with a public forum such as Nazret. It is an insult to watch that unfold.

[Alexa's measure is only for the last three month and if you see the chart above ER had a spike of traffic for a short time, but over the entire year, nazret still had more traffic. Also ER has diversified its news coverage, see here.]

The first rank I wanted to check was ER. I am surprised there are still a lot of us visiting that website. I do not like Eliyas Kifle's idea of telling all the opposition parties that Eritrea is the one and the only one through towards victory.
