Ethiopian airliner crashes after takeoff from Beirut

BEIRUT, Jan 25 (Reuters)
-

An Ethiopian Airlines [ETHA.UL] plane with 85 passengers on board crashed into the Mediterranean sea shortly after taking off from Beirut international airport in the early hours of Monday, airport sources said. The plane, said to be a Boeing (BA.N) 737 by one source, disappeared off the radar some five minutes after takeoff.

About 50 passengers were Lebanese nationals, most of the others were Ethiopians, the sources said. There were thought to be seven crew members.

The plane took off shortly after its scheduled time of 3:10 a.m. (0010 GMT), flying south-west, the sources said.

Ethiopian Airlines' website shows it has a flight from Beirut to the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa around that time, operating a Boeing 737. The airline could not immediately be reached for comment.

According to one source, residents on the coast saw a plane on fire crashing.

Senior Lebanese officials headed to Rafik Hariri International Airport after news of the crash. The plane had flown in from Addis Ababa earlier in the night, the sources said.

Hundreds of Ethiopians work as domestic helpers in Lebanon.

---------------

Fatal Accidents involving Ethiopian Airlines

  1. 15 September 1988; Ethiopian Airlines 737-200; Bahar Dar, Ethiopia
During takeoff, the aircraft ingested numerous pigeons into both engines. One engine lost thrust almost immediately and the second lost thrust during the emergency return to the airport. As a result of the crash landing, 31 of the 105 passengers were killed.

  2. 23 November 1996; Ethiopian Airlines 767-200ER; near Moroni, Comoros Islands: The aircraft was on a flight from Ethiopia to Kenya when it was hijacked by at least two people. While attempting a landing near Moroni in the Comoros Islands the aircraft ran out of fuel and ditched near a beach. Ten of the 12 crew members and 117 of the 160 passengers were killed. The three hijackers apparently died.

Some witnesses said they saw the plane on fire before it crashed to the sea. If it is so,something suspicious on the plane must have hapend. Most of the passengers abroad were lebanise nationals. I hope they will investigate, if this is a work of our enemies.

if it is weather related who is responsible for giving the take off clearance in such dangerous condition. I know my question is too simplistic, people who know will hopefully say something about the take off rules in such conditions. in light of OSAMAS'S warning less than 24 hrs. ago and the weather condition, i give it 50/40 weather/terrorism. the fact it happened while it was still climbing favors the weather hypothesis. may all the victms rest in peace. we must be strong and united/determined at a moment of a great tragedy.

Ethiopian air lines is one of the best air line in africa in many aspects in cluding aircraft Durability and best maintinance persinnel too.The tragic accident must be caused by bad weather. My deepest condolence for all the families who lost their loved ones.
....................................

Yesterday there was lots of Thunder over beirut, and i think , something hit the plane, regarding the passenger , they are 60 percent lebanese businessman working in Africa and they use Ehtiopian airline since it has one of the best connection routes to the African continent. The other people on board are my country Ethiopian workers who have spent several straight years in Lebanon making a living for their families back home and are finally on their way to see their families.

Very sad for the family of the bereft and also a big blow for the ethiopian airlines, it is a big set back for its record of safety.

The two failures that happened related not to technical failure, and i suspect there might be something folly play behind this tragedy.

Hope the EAL and Lebaness government will investigate for the reason of the crush.

No one wants to lose his loved one's as a result every body should play a role in ensuring safety and security.

I'm shocked. To be honest with every body here-I don't think I've a word , words or phrases, you name it,to express how much I'm troubled by this tragic development.
What ever the cause of this horrific incident is ,I think it's a good idea not to run to a hasty conclusion;at this point in time -NOBODY would know the true cause of the crash. It could be because of any thing. It could be because of -the bad weather around the scene,or it could be because of lightning,or mechanical problem,it could also be linked to terrorism. For me the wearher is likely to blame, perhaps -
lighting .Time will tell.
May God Help All Who Were On Board the Aircraft.

It is very bad news, I am sad for our poor sisters who lost their life,

Anonym please see the following,

The Boeing 737 is considered one of the safest planes in airline service. The jet was first introduced in the 1960s, and today is the workhorse on many short- and medium-range routes.

Still, over the past 15 years it was involved in a series of incidents and crashes linked to a valve in the rudder assembly. This reportedly would malfunction and cause the rudder to turn independently of the pilot's commands.

The problem was considered resolved after operators of older Boeing 737s were ordered to carry out inspections and upgrades of the critical rudder control systems.

Sidney Dekker, a professor of flight safety at the School of Aviation at Lund University in Sweden, said the rudder problem has been corrected by the manufacturer and that he'd be "hugely surprised" if it had anything to do with the crash.

Dekker, himself a 737 pilot, said that if reports of an engine fire proved to be correct, the accident could have possibly resulted from a loss of control at relatively low altitude.

He noted that the 737's engines were overpowered in order to fulfill single-engine takeoff performance requirements. "This tends to produce a turning movement toward the dead engine in the case of the loss of a powerplant at takeoff," he said.

Poor visibility in low cloud combined with high winds may have contributed to the problem faced by the pilots, he said.

In February 2009, a Turkish Airlines Boeing 737-800 plane crashed short of the runway at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, killing nine passengers and crew. Dutch investigators say the plane crashed because of a false reading from a faulty altimeter.

This was expected to happen because the Airline is growing to fast too soon. They started hiring foreign pilots and this is what happens when you are trying too grow inorganically. The Pilots of Ethiopian Airline work like dogs compare to any other county. They get one or two days of per month. In the US pilots can’t work more than certain hours per week. There is no FAA in Ethiopia that controls this kind of matters. This is the time the airline needs to address this issue. The pilots association needs to request this or go on work slow down or strike. This peoples death should not go in vain. I am very upset because I know now what my friends at the airline tell me about the work condition they have to endure.

May their soul rest in peace. The sad part is the horror they must have gone when they realize they are going to die. That is the worst part. I don’t wish that even to my enemies

[Please wait for the investigation results before jumping to conclusions. ]

Where is Meles Zenawi to briefing the 'ethiopian' correspondents(if there are any) and to that of their international counterparts that are based in Addis and to send condolences to the victims' families and to officially say sorry and reassure the public with courage and togetherness. See what the Lebanese PM did right after this horrible incident happened. He announced the day to be marked as national day to remember the Lebanese killed in the accident and order the national flag to be hanged half way on the pole. He also closely follow the rescue mission which is now being undertaken by the UN special mission force. For Ethiopians who lost their daughters and sons in this horrendous crash, Girma wake's brief appearance on the sate control media is not countable except it is better than nothing. They deserve a full explanation and reassurance by the sate head - PM Zenawi. Please learn how to govern a country! U don't need to be innovative to best govern the people of Ethiopia, just spin around gently and see how the others govern and respect their country and people.

Let's not rush to conclusion. These events are a must. We don't know when and where, but they are part of the staststics in operations of this sort. Growing fast increases the probability. However, it does not change the inevitablity. I am just responding to a comment I read here. Anyway, it doesn't look like there are any survivors. I will blame the gov or others if this has to do with any terrorism issues. Otherwise, it is part of the business. May God Bless!!!!!!

I never expected better news to come out of that hell hole called Beirut. No Ethiopian will come out unscratched or healthy out of that city. I hate Beirut! It is a death trap and a torture chamber for anything Ethiopian. I understand that the cause of accident is still under investigation and unknown, but how in the world they let the plane take of when it was clear the weather was stormy? The cause could be also terrorism and still the blame goes to Beirut.

Dear Observer, i understand that you are currently in a considerable state of shock and awe, we all are. However, blaming EAL for this tragic accident makes you sound an irresponsible Ethiopian brat who complains tough work conditions in a company owned by one of the poorest country in the world. Working for EAL is not just a dream job but also, for many Ethiopians, a privilege given its relative better benefits compared to let say working as surgeon in Tiqur Anbesa Hospital or a Professor in AAU and so on. Ethiopians must work like a dog if they wish to emerge victorious from the shackles of poverty. All EAL employees must work ten or more times harder than their Western counter parts. Stop day dreaming better work conditions that is equivalent to AAL's or BAW's or Lufthansa's when million's of Ethiopian's are surviving on food aid and hundreds of thousands of our sisters are getting enslaved by brutal arabs in the middle east. You have also demanded Ethiopian to pay compensation. What for? Do you want the only company with blood in the country to stop breathing? Do you want to see it bankrupted? Come to your sense pal!

If i were Girma Wake, i would suspend my recent order for more of 737-800s from Boeing until the investigation results show the cause of the accident has nothing to do engine failure.

My heart goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. Rest in peace all!

I Will Fly Ethiopian For Life, No Matter What!!!

While the tragedy is a great day of sorrow, I think in this day of integrated world, our distinguished CEO of ET, Ato Girma as well as the Prime Minister should play an active role in PR. They should come out and say how much sorry they are for the loss of life and assure the world that our great Airlines will remain safe despite this.

Keeping quiet will make us the whole country look detached and really bad. This is not time to be divided; but to stand for Ethiopia's name as well as the loss of these dear lives.

Why would EAL suspend the orders? Are you questioning the safety standard of the aircraft? Or you suggesting the company should down size because of this?
As trajic as it may be, this is just an accident. No Need to Freak out. Major Airliners have major accidents of this type all over the world all the time.
If any, they should rather order more and go on. 737 is a very safe aircraft with over 2 decades of service. As I said earlier, these types of events are part of the business. As a flying customer, dying in a plane crash is a possiblit. Yet,you still have to fly. If you don't agree, try to walk to Africa from USA!

Observer:
Ethiopian Airlines is the best employer in Ethiopia and people do anything to get their feet in its doors to do any kind of work. It has the best maintenance center of Boeing aircraft anywhere, its flight crew schedules are governed by the industry standard. You may not know this but the FAA oversee or approve the maintenance and other works there. You may want to check again. In general the few accidents it had in its long history, were not related to the airlines failure to follow procedures in maintenance or scheduling. Check the facts again!

I thought this comment on the mail is interesting..

"Condolences to the families of ALL involved: British, Lebanese and Ethiopian.

However as others have pointed out, the fireball would suggest mechanical failure rather than weather being the cause. Modern airliners should be able to cope with a lightning strike with minimal damage and although windshear is a possibility, this would cause the plane to stall / dive or in extreme cases the vulnerable wings or vertical stabiliser to detach rather than an explosion.

At least in this case the plane fell into shallow water making investigation a more realistic prospect than (for example) the Air France flight that 'disappeared'.

As for the timing of the disaster, take-off is by far the most dangerous part of any flight; the engines are being worked harder and the forces on the airframe during ascent and banking are at their greatest. Once you're up and at level cruising altitude there's a lot less that can go wrong - and moreover, a lot more time to deal with it if it does.

The latest on the tradegy is a grainy night time video that shows EAL Flight 409 taking off from Hariri Beirut Airport already engulfed in fire.

Could it have been the undetectable chemical powder PETN (pentaerythritol tetranitrate) that almost took down the Delta plane over Detroit, MI, on X-Max day the culprit here? Why are the official quickly ruling out terrorism without further investigation? Beirut is not the safest airport after all.

With Ethiopia's involvment in Somalia, Eritrea and overall political strategy on terrorism, her interests remain vulnerable everywhere. One more incident like this one and Ethiopian Airline would take a huge hit in all aspects.

There is a reason why people should not drink and drive/fly, and also there is a reason why drivers/pilots should not drive/fly more than certain hours a week to avoid fatigue, whither you are in a third world or in the developed world. Ethiopian pilots are the best but they are human my friend. If you want to keep they best need to adjust their work time like they did to their pay scale. Simple supply and demand. Now their hiering foreign pilots to meet their demand.

It's neither fair nor wise to jump into a rush of judgment. Contrary to your hasty claim that pilot quality deterioration as being the possible cause, ETV has reported the pilot was one of the elite, a 20-year veteran, Ethiopian pilot with a superb record.

Hope it was nothing more than a rush to judgment on your part.

Observer, i and the management of EAL, a company with 65 years of colorful history, certainly did not know the reason why people shouldn't drive or fly while feeling woozy out of sleep deprivation or alcohol intoxication. Ethiopian could use your valuable expertise in its famous piloting school. But, i am confused here. Was it the pilot or the Boeing plane that has caught fire, which one was sleeping? You should also pass a verdict against EAL for the storm around Beirut and tell us that had the crew on board had their proper vacation in the Caribbean or had they had the chance to pay a visit every single church in town or to pray five times a day or simply spent time chewing chat in their apartment like the raw and lazy citizens in the country, they would have had sensed what is awaiting them a few miles from Beirut's air port therefore succeeded in averting the accident. Look the name of the 22 Ethiopians who have lost their live. All females who have been, most probably, working 24/7 in a grueling work conditions for brainless arabs or imagine the farmers back home who are toiling a farm from desk to down or the mothers who spent the night hungry and still walk miles the next morning to fetch water or collect a fire wood. Should Ethiopians in EAL complain about inhumane or tough work conditions? According to you and the so called Ex ET Pilot[Visitor], yes they should. Ex Pilot thinks EAL should let him have a vacation in Bahams or else face the kind of disaster, which he has been praying and waiting to happen. Denkoro, lazy, vengeful, coward and vindictive hibreteseb!

From the way eye witnesses described the incident, weather is unlikely a cause of the crash. A loud explosive sound and a fire ball falling from the sky couldn't be caused by a bad weather. A bad weather would cause the plane to fall but loud sound and explosive only may happen after the impact not before the impact. I would suspect something may have happened inside the plane. Lighting strike is very common for aircraft and they are designed to survive lighting strike(I'm aircraft engine test engineer and i know this fact intimately) I do not know why they ruled out terrorism so quick without a full proper investigation.

Ethiopia Airline managements should slow down and emphasis on qualities not quantities. All the hard word for years GOODWILL will be tarnished right away if they do not manage it very carefully. It will be very difficult to restore your goodwill back once slip away from your hand, it takes a long, long time. As they used to they have to emphasis on maintenance quality for the airplanes and avoid rushing schedules to meet deadlines. One of the reasons Ethiopian Airline so popular in Africa is its dependability and clean records. They must balance between seeking aggressive growth and loosing quality of dependability and market shares. When you try to grow so fast before you have adequate personal to maintain the Airplanes on time and frequently as needed with out any constraints maintenance facilities, you loose everything and ended up out of business.

Running Airline business like Ethiopia is very expensive and risky due to political instability in the whole region and Arab decedent’s hostility to wards Ethiopia. Ethiopia need to put some kind of strict security in very root and office branch Ethiopia Airlines departures

STORMS OR SABOTAGE? The mystery of Flight 409

Lightning strikes are not normally a danger to airliners but dense rain can occasionally cause jet engines to "flame out" and stop. In this case, the crew would normally report their predicament to controllers, telling them that they were gliding and attempting to restart.

It is too early to rule out sabotage, as the Lebanese Government did, unless it holds information that it has not released.

If the pilots did not reported any problem, an explosive or other foul play cannot be excluded, aviation experts said. Speculation over possible sabotage or terrorism is natural, given Beirut's position in the Middle East and Ethiopia's support for the government of Somalia in its conflict with Islamist insurgents.

A very sad day for all Ethiopians.

It is also a sad day to see folks like Yirgacheffe talk about "standing in unison", when they have all but dismantled and destroyed the "social fabric" of the Ethiopian Nation. Very very sad.

I will express my deepest condolencence to the bereft family in this catastrophe. There is no touching news than hearing the death of your loved ones when you are waiting them to see them within hours. Particularly the poor house maid, who have been languishing in a foreign land like a slave.

I was also very sad for the Ethiopian Airlines who is one of few institution which makes us proud and for tarnishing its best safety record in the continent even compared to other airlines in spite of our poor economy.

It should be remembered that the EAL pilots, technicians and all the staff are very well equipped. Not only fly the EAL but other famous international airlines.

But it should be remembered that Comoros Island incident is not a mistake of EAL but Woyane for having poor security check up by banning the anti hijackers from boarding and laying off claiming that they are Dergist and several hijacking episodes occurred during that time, some of it result in the shooting of civilians inside the plane by woyane agents.

I think EAL should be strong enough to stop the illegal business on the shoulder of the EAL by Woyane agents and their co.

I am always puzzled by the amount of meager profit the EAL get compared to the number of flights it will undertake throughout the world.

I would like to appreciate the management of EAL and its staff trying to maintain their reputation in spite of the mess the woyane created such as Sieye abrha.

Had Ethiopians were given an opportunity to manage their business with out interference of the Woyane, we would have the best country in the horn in spite of our poverty due to our human resources.Woayne always want to take the credit for himself, all the managers, sales , technicians, and pilots the result of long experience and hardworking of Ethiopians.

But still all possibility for the crash should not be ruled out prematurely and needs in the investigation the help of others USA, British and Israel to know what really happens.Hope the black box will be recovered soon.

It is very important to consider terrorism, it would be easier for the terrorist to by pass the security system of Lebanon. Even the nigerian easily passed the European security checking system.

There is great enmity from terrorits group against Ethiopia particularly by Woyanes involvement in Somalias affair. Woyane always try to undermine Ethiopia's security and interest for short term interest such as entering in somalia, giving away ports, giving away land , selling land for free even to Egypt. So the parliament and other Ethiopians including officers should starting asking the questions.

Even though there is nothing for sure if this thing happen due to Woyanes previous action but it is high time to ask every decision they made.

Finally i would like to express my deepest condolence for all those who lost their loved ones.

Peace for the world.

It is so sad to lose such a beautiful crew and also the people; when you board the Ethiopian airlines and see the beautiful crew, while going home, it is like seeing your beloved mother after long time. When you fly to Ethiopia, the crew represents everything of your country, your family, your home, your people, etc. That feeling comes to your mind. That is why I choose to fly with ELA. Such tragedy can happen to any busy airlines, but it happened to us only once in many years. The tragedy could have been caused due to the bad weather; that means it was possible to avoid it and makes the tragedy very regrettable. The Ethiopian pilots are very skilled and we have confidence in them, but they should not be over confident and risk bad weather. I heard while others fear and become confused to land in Khartoum airport when the run way is covered with the so called “camsin” I think it called a dune in English , Ethiopian pilots manage to land. I was not happy to hear such story and it was a bad news to me. Like the Lebanese the Sudanese may not be so skilled and qualified to guide the planes during bad weather conditions; and our pilots should not put full trust in them. You give trust only to the one who has a better judgment than you. Many airports to where EAL fly are still not modern; and there exists danger; especially the dune in Khartoum airport poses risk to airplanes. Beware of it!
Ethiopian Airlines is still very modern and becoming very strict will make it much more modern. We will always fly with Ethiopian Airlines; it is still one of the best.

It is a big pity that some of our own people are targeting EAL and its crew. It is an insult to EAL and its personnel, who have a colorful truck record, recognized by many courtiers and organizations. It is also an insult to the memory of those killed on this and other EAL flights.
This is a time when one should be sober and more pragmatic. Everybody should try to avoid reaching an amateur’s conclusions, which sometimes end up in defaming EAL and its personnel. Remember, EAL and the Crews of our renowned Airlines are one of the best things Ethiopia has to show to the world.

Let God give comfort to the families who lost their loved ones. What a tragic moment for all of us. Here is a clip of the article from guardian about one of our sister who lost her life in this tragedy:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jan/25/ethiopian-airlines-crash-lebanon

Many of the Ethiopians killed in the crash were also economic migrants, but in the reverse direction – young women who left homes and families to travel to Lebanon to work as domestic helpers in the homes of wealthy Lebanese.

Many are treated as little more than slaves, human rights activists claim. In many cases servants go unpaid, are confined indoors and made to work long hours seven days a week. Some are beaten and even sometimes raped.

"Why do you Lebanese never treat us good?" screamed one Ethiopian woman as security forces prevented her from entering the governmental hospital in Beirut today to identify a body. "We are human beings like you. God created us. Why don't I have the right to come in and see my sister?"

Outside the hospital a group of Ethiopian women stood quietly in a corner, waiting for news of friends on the flight – young women like the friend they knew as Warkey, who arrived in Lebanon to work for a family in Nabatiyeh,

"She had worked for two years and her family had not paid her salary once," said one of Warkey's friends, who asked not to be named. "She even had to buy her own clothes. So she ran away and I took her in. But she said she missed her parents so much and had to go home. She was only 20.

"We went to the embassy and they did not help. Because she had run away and did not have any papers, she ended up being arrested and put in prison," she said, her dark brown eyes welling up with tears.

"They let her out of prison on Saturday and drove her to the airport, so she could take that flight."

Free,

I can't explain to you any furthur. It seems you have the mental capacity to understand why Pilots need to be alert by having enbough rest. When bad things happen they will make the right call. I didn't say it was a pilot error. I said what ever the cituation is they need to make a good decision and good decision can not be made when you are fetugued or intoxecated. You talk about vacation in Bahamas and garbage like that because your trying to twist things to make your argument cradible. If they don't change their work load they will loose good pilotes like they did before their salery adjustment. So, sit their talk garbage instead of actualy knowing what the acutal pilots feel about this issue. I have talk to several of the pilots and they all complain they work more hours than any pilots in any other country in the region that has creadible airline. I am not saying this it is the pilots that are saying this. When they start loosing more and more pilots they will be forced to adjust. That is what is going to happen.

Bethel,

Sorry you feel the end is here. I feel for your heart and despair. Don't lose hope by thinking it is going to be the end. There have been much much worst periods in the human history than what we have now. 1918-1919 influenza pandemic killed anywhere between 30 and 50 million people. So, don't raise your hand and give up because the likely hood of being the end is almost zero. Pick yourself up and move on foreword my dear country person whom I love and respect.

Bethel

The end of the world we live in will come when human made errors or problems become out of control. When there is no solution for our self made multiple problems, this might mean the end of the world.
I do not think that you are referring to the possible natural disaster that can be caused by space objects. But that may also bring the end of the world. Science has also explanation for the end of the world.
The signs indicated in the bible refer to the human errors; they foretell that human beings at last will bring an end to their world and themselves. Natural disasters that are not caused by humans are not indication of the end of the world. In fact human made errors may trigger natural disasters. I think such disasters can also be the signs of the end of the world the bible tries to warn about. So do not assume disasters that come due to natural causes as indication of the end of the world. The people of Haiti were simply living in the wrong place, and have been affected by a naturally occurring earth quake. Do not misunderstand God and his messages; you are only becoming a naive false messenger.

The list is very revealing. Almost all of the victims are from the Amhara tribe. The obvious trend is that while Amharas are relegated to a stereotypical maid destination in middle eastern countries, others who have mastered the immigration system either by duping the visa system or pooled resources, find themselves surprisingly a majority in Europe or America; one of many that goes on ignored in the previous and current regime. It is a sabotage within sabotage. Ugly Tribal(ism) rules Ethiopia and Tigreans are not the only ones playing games here. The likes of Beyene Peterous, the unleashers of "demonic Findata" (so called because they are lesser value and undeserving princes) and other southerns have inadvertently mounted competition against Amharas. By the way, worldly competition is a joke for God is everywhere, and for every moving on, there are many visible and invisible setbacks ahead. It is time that we hire lawyers to represent our sisters - the maids - in Arabia. Even the Arab sounding names belong to those Ethiopians who've changed their names.

Huffington Post's revelation that all 50+ Lebanese that died were Shiites means that the probability that the crash was the works of terrorism is even higher. The Shiites comprise only 150 million muslims out of two billions. Al- Queda could care less about Shiites as it is apparent of their slaughter in Iraq. Fifty Shiites + Thirty Ethiopian + Ten Foreigners = Easy Target. It would have been an easy study for terrorist to target EAL 409 because of its typical traffic/load information.

We can't get respect from this Ekekam Arebs unless we improve and develop our country to be respected by the rest of the world. We can't develop our country because Dictators run the country as if it is there private property. It is a shame we are in a catch 22 as they say. I know even if there comes a good leader that really wants to develop his or her country, the west will try to dictate his/her agenda and if they refuse they will be overthrown by a paid tug like the idiot we have now. I am not trying to play politics here. I am just frustrated we are treated by other countries like baggers.
