Wow, this is very interesting news. Ethiopian with only 34 aircraft is competing with those who have hundreds of aircrafts. Ranking 25th most profitable airlines in the world with very few flights main passenger airlines is very GOOD NEWS FOR ALL ETHIOPIANS TO BE PROUD OF. I can only imagine how profitable Ethiopian will become once Boeing delivers the 787 dream-liners?

Thanks for making African in general and Ethiopian in particular.

How many airlines are there????25?Ethiopian Airlines has a lot of work to do in their service department. Customer service is lacking. Improvement in the service dpartment might put them ata higher position. I enjoyed KLM. The service was fantastic. The staff was friendly and they went out of their way to make my trip comfortable. I felt i was in good hands. Cheers to KLM! Ethiopian Airlines can learn from them.

I commented what is written below on the news "Ethiopian National on the ill-fated Yemeni plane" and would like to raise it again mainly I don't want EAL to fail

"It will be a lesson to EAL, ethiopian airlines is now on european critical list for unsafe operation
Only in this year EAL has encountered several near misses, disasters avoided twice only in Italy
EAL shouldnot only wait for the dreamliners but has to reduce the intensive hour use per plane currently practicing and amend the attitude of ignoring some safety measures "

Well done Ethiopian!

President Nerray said we africans focus on the wrong side of our development. A good example is Ethiopia. We dont focus on what we are good at and what imoprtant to us. If we want to be successful in all governmental and private sectors we must lear from Ethiopian air lines and Ethioipian athletics federation. These two organizations have some thing incommen ie SUCESS!!! regardeless which goverment running our country.

10,856,076,000 birr was the opprating revenu. This money is the equivalent of the 2009/2010 budget of the whole Ethiopia. If we sum up the incomes of all our athlets during the 2008 from abroad inaddition to the happiness of millions of us then it is time to focus on the best of us. Let us lear form them. Let us focus on what we goog at.

We want to see Ethiopia making all efforts in the energy sector (Electricity), too. The govt and people must have now a revolution in the Energy sector that is the first fundamental issue for development including protecting the forest not to be cut for firewood.

I have read about the EECO manager story in the reporter (Amharic) blaming the international community blocking funds to build hydroelectric power in Ethiopia. He is a stupid, sick and ignorant knows nothing about his job and the world at all. He is the one complicating the situation. Because of his bad managment, Ethiopians that are skillful and have love to their people trying to electrify the nation through solar and other energy systems are become unable to do so. His EECO is corrupt, toooo slow and bureaucrat complicating the situation as long as some cases are taking more than four years just to get a paper signed and get permission to start a project. These Ethiopian individuals are coming from abroad with full of knowledge, cash, working skill and respect for the nation. But EECO which is the very sick org Ethiopia has today is making the situation too complicating and many have gave up and returned back to abroad with disbelieve and sadness. Read a one man’s story in reporter (Amharic) two/three... weeks back

I'm an outsider. But when I see what is going on in the EECO, I feel shame, sick, hurt, sorry for the Ethiopian people and giving up. The situation is bad in all sectors, but in EECO is the worst. EECO must be the first and best org in the nation. It is the nations light. But it is getting towards darkness time after time. Yet, the manager and other responsibles are still there. The Ethiopian govt an dthe people are saying/doing nothing about. It is shame and giving the feeling that is telling that the govt an dpeople don't care if it is darkness or light in teh nations life. If it is happenning in a different country, they will be in prison long a go. But in Ethiopia?

They are working while just talking nonsense. Saying we will have this amount of electric power; we will export it and bla bla, While electric supply in the country is getting less and less every time. To get a line, takes months even years. O, boy, is it 21- century in Ethiopia or 19- century? The people thinking for work, client and so on is to be found nowhere in the world. They are too backward, slow, foolish and with lots of bad habits that are against progress.
They have made previous contracts for instance Gilgel Gibe 2, 3, Tekeze and the likes with foreign firms. And still now they are looking other foreign companies for Gilgel gibe and other projects that would be available after the Ethiopian people have died from shortage of electricity today and tomorrow.

Why don't they learn from foreign companies to make it by themselves other coming projects such as Gilgel Gibe 4. Is there something decided by God we have to always hire foreigners to do for us? What about our university graduates? Why don't they build Electricity centrals, roads, Bridges, building, and all human made things as much as they can by themselves learning from foreign companies that are working in Ethiopia? Do we need universities if they are not producing students that are ready and capable of doing all necessary projects in the country?
Still having all contracts with foreign roads, electricity centrals and the likes contractors, is telling the world as we are not equal as human beings with the rest. Because we are not enough to do things by and for ourselves. When we want to do, the corrupt officials started from a backward guards are complicating the situation as it is going on in the EECO.

So, first and it has to be done now that the govt/Ethiopian people must start a very well organized revolution in the Energy sector. All EECO so called high officials must go now. They are stupid, weak, corrupt, too slow, have no idea how the world works blaming the world for money while they are the one to be blamed for everything. World has no shortage but excess of money. But they don’t get it. For them IMF and World Bank are the only institutes while even some individuals wealth is reaching up to 60 billion USD. Why don’t they approach other organizations/individuals based on the Ethiopian benefit?
Yet, money and skill is not a problem. There are capable of Ethiopians doing the best for their country. The corrupt EECO and its bad/primitive management is the biggest obstacle making Ethiopians to live in darkness in a sonny country.

The govt will be appreciated and the country will benefited in many ways if the EECO is totally demolished and in its place comes the new, fresh and right one the why how it thinks, works and deliver services. The current one is the worst no country accepts but only Ethiopia.

Remember: Ethiopia has very, very and very competent and dynamic citizens in Diaspora and in the country that are ready and very happy to do the right things for her in all sectors. Throw the current EECO system to hell started from the officials and replace it by allowing those Ethiopians participating in the nation building. If they get chances, Diaspora Ethiopians would bring Ethiopia from the deepest level she is now to the highest level where she has to be with in short period of time.

EECO from top to down and its primitive work culture go to hell now. Because you are making the Ethiopian people life hell and as long as you are there, it will get even worst. The nation progress and country environment started from the forest for firewood and other reasons will get more damaged as the people life will be if you are staying there.
The second revolution has to be in the infrastructure sector, too. These two sectors are the back bone to any nation. Ethiopians must learn and be capable of doing these things by themselves rather than making contract with foreign companies. Learn from them and say them thanks and good bye and do it by your self with high quality standards and with aboandoned.

[Mesganaw, Thank you, 34 is the number currently in fleet according to ATW, we have made correction to the total to include all including aircraft in order ]

The profit is good, time to pay employees decent wage who keep on moving to Arabia. Emirates, Etihad, Saudi, Qatar and other airlines in Asia have many ex-Ethiopian Arilines employees. The success of Ethiopian is due to its dedicated employees so they deserve to get paid well.

It is great success Ethiopian! As an ex-employee of the airline, I feel great proud to hear that. Bravo Girma!

I think i have to comment on the drawbacks too. As mentioned by S.T.Y, Ethiopian needs to work more regarding customer service. Especially the hostesses are not friendly and helpful to Ethiopian Travelers. They might be warm for others- but not to Ethiopians. Think about that our dear hostesses.

Misganaw, thank you for the Math. But your article is "FIYEL WEDIH KIZIMZIMU WEDIA". First of all, it is not the right time and right place to talk about EECO. Second, your article is not more than critiques. No valuable solution was mentioned. I expect problem citation and suggested soluttions on your next article.

Good news for Ethiopian Air! I wish other state run businesses could be as successful. I dont mean to go off subject but MESGANAWE raised a good question, we need change in EECO and I would also add ETC. Why are contracts always being given to foreign firms? The woyane regime always awards meaningful contracts to foreign companies before looking for a competitor from inside, WHY? I can understand on some complicated projects where our professional may not have the experience but even in those cases our internal professionals and those Ethiopians abroad should be invited to participate but on even small projects such as road construction the government looks outside before they do inside. SHAME!

"While electric supply in the country is getting less and less..."
What????????
It is not the supply that is getting less and less but is the demand of electricity is getting higher and higher due to the rapid development of the economy and expansion to the rural area of the country. The production of electricity in 1983 EC was 400 MW,are you saying that the current production is less than 400 MW.
Regarding EAL it is a great jog by the EAL employees and by the government.
Go EPRDF....
Death for those who oppose the economical grouth of the mother land ETHIOPIA.
