Addis Ababa, Ethiopia -
Ethiopian is pleased to announce that it has ordered GE90-115B Engines to power its five Boeing 777-200LR aircrafts including one spare engine. The announcement was made at the Dubai Air show held on November 16, 2009. The engine order is valued at more than $350 million at list price.

The CEO of Ethiopian, Ato Girma Wake said, "As a rapidly growing world class African airline, we are enhancing our reach and offering better choices to our customers through continuous expansion of our route network. Alongside the rapid growth and expansion, we continue to hold dear our social values and responsibly discharge our social obligations in protecting the environment. Our purchase of the GE engines, we believe, will be of help to us in achieving our objective and reaffirming our commitment to our corporate social responsibilities."

"Ethiopian Airlines is the first African airline to order the GE90-115B powered Boeing 777-200LR aircraft and was the first African airline to order GEnx engines for its Boeing 787 aircraft," said Kevin McAllister, Vice President and General Manager of Sales, GE Aviation. "GE Aviation is extremely proud of the trust and confidence Ethiopian Airlines has in our outstanding engine products, and we look forward to working with them to ensure successful entry into service."

Ethiopian currently operates 29 Boeing aircraft and expects deliveries of five Boeing 777s and ten 787s in 2010 and 2011 respectively. Including the recent orders for 12 A350s and eight Bombardier Q400s, Ethiopian will operate one of the youngest and greenest fleet in Africa with better comfort and efficiency.

Ethiopian is doing great, the B777-200LR is the coolest plane in the airline industry, it can fly non-stop for about 22 hours. Emirates is using it in it's non-stop Dubai to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Houston flights. Once Ethiopian receives the planes Ethiopian will be able to open more routes in USA, Canada, Australia, China and maybe Japan and New Zealand.

I have a question. I have been reading within the last 18 months time that EAL has ordered/put an order for aircrafts, this time engines, from both aircraft manufacturers - Boeing/Airbus. I have not seen any delivery as of yet.
Boeing atleast has admitted their lateness in the delivery schedule.
With that in mind EAL should immedialtely resort to Airbus aircrafts and get them right away.Or is it another politics as usual- Lam alegn besemay! BTW 2010 election is around the corner.

Please forward this to Girma Wake and Meles Zenawi!

I am happy with the order of GE and RR engines for the B-777/B-787 and A-350.

I still insist that the eight Bombardier Q-400 airplanes should be scrapped. Just scrap it and pay contract cancellation fee. You will thank me forever for doing just that!

Im starting to enjoy the comments of c'moi senait actually. She always associates everything with narcotics...I'm sure she's a drug addict and she's pissed cuz she cant get some from the EAL people or somehow the deal went wrong along the way. Its as if she's gonna start a revolution against woyanne's pretty soon.Anyways, Hitech--- I dont think the Q400 order was wrong although i wish they had chosen the Embraer 175 or some jet aircraft of its size but the bombardiers are actually very comfortable aircraft and one of the most revolutionized proper planes in the market right now so I think for domestic routes, after all the airports still need work.

Mesfin B, all of the airplanes that are on order will be delivered to Ethiopian. Ethiopian is an excellent airline, leaving politics aside, yes the B787s are late but that is not only for Ethiopian, ANA the Japanese airlines who is a launch customer of the B787 has so far not received any from Boeing, in fact the B787 will have it's first test flight on December 22,2009. Ethiopian should not resort into a rash to Airbus now, all you can get from Airbus at this moment is A330s which I don't think Ethiopian is interested in. The B777-200LRs will be devlivered from next year on so Ethiopian will have planes that will allows it to fly to more destinations non-stop. Banjaw, wheteher Ethiopian buys new planes or not is not going to solve the famine. Ethiopia needs good governance with farmer friendly land policies and that is what Engineer Hailus AEUP is struggling for. Ethiopian is an excellent airline and for it to remain competeitive in the airline industry it must buy new planes once in a while and open more routes and add frequencies to the existing network.

:D:D

Danny,
Don't expect Hailu Showel to deliver a sound land policy. As far as I know, there is nothing wrong with the current Land Policy.
In a country like Ethiopia, you can't simply let the land to be owned by individuals. Such a policy has quiet significant drawbacks.
Massive influx of farmers is inevitable if you let them to sell their land (quick cash)- results: migration & squatters around big cities like Addis. However, the government should relax land policy in Addis at least with strict regulation - if you are buying a land, for example, you have to construct / or do something on it - you can't hung on it untill the price is high and then sell it later. I think, Zenawi is trying to balance / and to make sure that the poor farmers are not exposed and lose their only one property for quick money. Think about it ! I can assure you that I can go out in the country side and buy every single land with dirt cheap price from the farmers - I have seen it & you wouldn't believe it how the farmers are willing to dispose their land for cheap.

Banjaw,
Don't be a Doma Ras! Where do you live?

ET is a company with clear objective - Make money. It is not a Government.
Are you expecting ET to become a Salvation Army and feed the poor.

You better come back to planet Earth.

Ethiopian should just get out of the turboprop aircraft operation business. Just think of the man-power hours you waste on the propeller system alone at each periodic check. It is high time that Ethiopian added ease of maintenance and flight safety in its aircraft and engine selection criteria.

In my first and only posting, I suggested Ethiopian to opt for GE because of the income it could generate from overhauling the GE engines at its own facility (since GE is widely used in Europe, Middle East and Arab/Gulf regions).

The other factor I wanted Ethiopian to consider when buying airplanes is/was whether the purchase will generate income for its aircraft flight simulator training center by attracting pilots.

I also suggested that Ethiopian get its own Boeing certified Boeing aircraft overhaul facility and GE certified engine test cells and engine overhaul facility. At the time, I highly recommended that Ethiopian expand its flight simulator training division (after complementing its choice of Hughes B-757/767 simulator).

In the selection of both the RR and Bombardier Q-400, fuel-economy seems to have been cited as a scare tactic. What about the RR spare-part price and Q-400’s safety issues?

Although I can’t see any reason to buy P&W engines, I am very disappointed at the RR price tag. Ethiopian should have negotiated for a better deal with the RR snobs. In the case of Q-400, why not buy jet airplanes (for about the same price) with more passenger capacity and yet suitable for regional operations?

As though the failure with the ATR-42, DASH-5, DASH-6 and Hercules turboprops wasn’t enough, Ethiopian annoyed me with its purchase of Fokker-50 some years ago. As though adding insult to the injury, now Ethiopian orders 8 Q-400 turboprops from Bombardier.

Which Ethiopian employee’s salary bothered the airline so much that it worried about a few cents hike in gas prices to opt for Bombardier’s turboprop? Guess what, it is only in Bombardier Q-400 crashes that crash causes remained ‘unknown’.

SAS grounded its entire Q-400 fleet and abandoned operating them altogether (followed by a multi-million law suits against Bombardier).
