Ethiopian ambassador to UK joins battle between Bob Geldof and BBC World Service

By Tracy McVeigh

The Observer
Sunday 14 March 2010

Ethiopian ambassador says the BBC World Service has endangered its credibility with claims that western aid money was diverted to buy weapons

The row between Bob Geldof and the BBC escalated into a diplomatic dispute yesterday as the Ethiopian ambassador called for an apology from the World Service after it reported claims that aid money meant for famine victims had been spent on weapons.

Peter Horrocks, director of the World Service, has said he fully supports the report, which featured one former Ethiopian rebel saying 95% of the money that flowed into famine-hit Tigray in 1985 was spent by the TPLF militia on guns.

A second man claimed that the TPLF (Tigrayan People's Liberation Front, now the ruling party of prime minister Meles Zenawi) had made a fortune selling sand disguised as grain to the aid agencies.

Live Aid founder Geldof and other leading charities have also demanded that the BBC retract the claims and have called for its reporter, Martin Plaut, to be fired.

Now ambassador Berhanu Kebede has told the Observer that he expects a full apology from the BBC, which has "destroyed its credibility in Africa".

"Frankly, it's a ridiculous report. They have not looked at this person they interviewed, who had left the TPLF before 1985. Anyone knows that a liberation movement depends on the support of the people to win. How could they starve their people or snatch bread from their mouths?

"To question the integrity of organisations like Band Aid, the Red Cross, Christian Aid, it is laughable. If the BBC want to investigate something from 25 years ago, they should have talked to a lot more people who were there.

"In Ethiopia, people on both sides laugh at this idea. They know it would have been a suicide mission to divert the aid money and let people starve; it makes no sense and it is unacceptable. For the BBC's own credibility, it has to apologise for this disgrace."

Horrocks is to have a meeting with the aid agency heads this week, and has said it was absolutely in the public interest to examine the claims being made.

"In Ethiopia, people on both sides laugh at this idea." What a jock! Ambassador: You know that even yourself do not represent the people of Ethiopia. All those in power deeply know that they are not elected by the people let alone represent the people. Where ever you may be, you all speak for your TPLF lords. You would represent Ethipian people at least if you could have kept quiet. Where were you in 85 Ato Birhanu? Were you part of the distribution or the deal? These TPLF/EPRDF people have long known that they are not part of Ethiopia as a nation. As they claimed themselves to be TPLF, the may represent Tigray, if the Tigray people are lucky enough to win the hearts of this inhuman creatures. They have been in power for the last 19 knowing that they are never been welcome by the people let alone to represent the people. They were, are and will be doing anything to maximize their circle of influence. They rocketed themselves from zero to "hero" with the cost of the Ethiopian lives and blood.

I have no doubt that they diverted the aid money to such a way as I see them doing the same thing even now, let alone those horrible days. So, Ambassador, please, you better keep quiet and observe what is going on in your time of appointment. However, standing to witness what you did not see or experience would be considered as laughing at the lives of those who suffered the most as a result of this scum. You and we, Ethiopians know the truth and please stop speaking for us as of today and work on your own case that you are going to present when you finish your term as ambassador and walk to the court seeking asylum.

If the BBC reporter was in Ethiopia after he reported on just one of TPLFs many and many crimes aginst Ethiopians and humanity, he would have been killed or throwen to jail. Meles knows that he can't do that, but he is trying to discreadit BBC. Well, my advise to BBC. Keep investigating Meles Zenawi, you will find a real news to show the world how evil Meles Zenawi is...

Unlike you he is a brilliant man who does his job well for all Ethiopians. Hodam is like you who does nothing but curse all those who work hard for their country. Take a course on civilisation 101. Savage!

BBC shame on you for not apologising still to the Ethiopian people. You have to start by firing that tabloid journalist. You can't interview one confused opposition hoodlum and condemn the whole nation of 80 million.

Where were you at that time. You might be a derg member at that time and now converted to TPLF who is always after advantage. LEt the people like Seye, GEbru, Gebremedhin, Aregawi and many other TPLF members are still in power speak the truth about it. The Ethiopian people heard and knew about it long time ago. This is not a news for us. I don't where you had lived Ambassador. I don't know the mental satisfaction these people get when they come out and lie a white lie. And, he added, BBC has lost creditability in Africa. Now you start to speak on the behalf of Africans. This is laughable. Just because BBC told the truth, which majority of Ethiopia ppl know, and they lost credibility in Africa. This is not Ethiopian radio and TV which has no credibility at all.

It is unforgivable people died of hunger while Tplf was selling their food. What's more unforgivable is people playing politics with peoples lives then and now.

BBC did what it is supposed to do. It reported as it should as it did what went down in the Ogaden. Tplf totally denied that too even when we knew different.

What tplf is doing is insulting. Let this one go as the damage has already been done. But if you thugs insist on pushing on this, it will blow up in your face. just let it go...

BBC is right. Unfortunately Bob Geldof was and still is part of the genocide of Tigre people. The aid money was diverted to buy weapons and to cover the expenses of TPLF in foreign countries. The ambassodor is a sell out and is one of the people who have to be brought to justice.

Meles Zenawi was purpposely respponsible for the starvqtion and death of about 100 000 civilians from Tigre. So is Bob Geldof.

No body questioned the integrity of the Live Aid. They did a humanely act of collecting the money. However given the then prevailing condition, it was beyound Live Aid's capacity to go on every house and see if they have got the aid money. Live aid thought woyanes, presumed the the sons and daughters of the people, would honestly deliver the aid to the starving people. So, there isn't any mischief from Live Aid. Any one who listens to the BBC program would tell that Live Aid is not accused of collaborating with woyanes to steal the money, but these dumb woyanes keep on the redherring, or they suffer from some problem of comprehension. Get it dumbs? Live Aid is not implicated of cheating the money; they are cheated by woyanes.

The great lesson for every Western media is to be very careful when dealing with the Ethiopian opposition parties and the extremist Diaspora. Do not rush to print their claims. Double, triple, quadruple check everything they say. Nine out of ten times you will find it's pure fiction. To not do so is to risk losing all credibility, maybe even businesses and livelihoods.

The jigsaw puzzle of this scenario is the report of the BBC that have never tried to contact the stakeholders, non of the humanitarian organization nor the Ethiopian government were contacted before the report was out to the public or to find out if the story was true or not. What was the motive behind this rush without valuing the crediablity of the report?

We know for a long time who Martin Plaut is, Martin Plaut is well remembered in many Ethiopian mind for his sick report on Ethio-Eritrean conflict, he was licking Eritrean boot as he was constantly reporting false and exgeratted news about the success of Eritrean army over Ethiopian army. Now he is back again with another irrisponsible, unethical and baseless report. There is both personal failure on Martin Plaut's side as a journlist and an institutional failure on the BBC side.

Dear Ambassador, please don't allow the BBC to runaway with their lie. This is part of the normal onslaught of Africans by the BBC, this is the long standing mission of demonizing Africans. The BBC have to speak otherwise it should be a legal case.

a couple of question BBC should have asked to the two former rebels.
1) where/how did you get the hundreds of thousands if not million sacks of sand.
2) if only 5% of the aid reaches the people how come they survived the famine.
i think bbc got a little too excited about the story when they saw the picture of one of the ex-rebel with the aid agent and took every thing at face value. but i found it a little difficult to accept that rebels let their own people starve to death right infront of their eyes while they can help. now BBC has two choise, appologize and go back to do more researsh or just stick to its story.

Ato Berhanu Kebede aka "Mr Ambassador" maybe you should spend your time trying to prepare for the court case against your governemnt on 19th July in UK for fraud and to explian what happened to the over $300,000 in sponsors money the ministry of culture and tourism and your good friend Mohamuda Gaas made to "dissapear", and refused to pay for, instead of jumping up and down over this issue, You and your crooked masters should be ready to explain in an international court why your masters have refused to pay the international beauties who came to Ethiopia in 2007, and have been blaming Sheik Alamoudin, if they can cheat them out of such a small ammount they can cheat foreigners out of millions more!

So please stop foaming at the mouth and demanding appology from BBC, you will not get it nor does the foreign media care what you say or who you claim to be "begging ambassador of propaganda", in fact I think they will be very happy to listen to your excuse why Miss Venezuela and co were not paid their prizes since 2007

All you are doing is name calling which neither explains your anger or brings anything to light. You are making noise with the presumption anything that is linked to Meles, TPLF or EPRDF is a fact. This approach is outright wrong because it brings nothing to a healthy exchange of ideas. For those who are tying to make the Ambassador a derg,he is not. THIS JUST THE BEGINNING!

It is not very hard to verify what TLPF did:

1. Officials' public speech over fortunes of TPLF:

TPLF officials think that Ethiopian people have short-term memory. We heard from many officials when trying to justify that EFFORT is Tigray's public property. They specifically were saying EFFORT's money source was left overs collected through years from aid money. This clearly indicates that they were embazzling aid money for personal and other purposes.

2. The people who were affected:

There are some lucky once who are now living abroad who could witness what happened. Most wittnessed that they used to live without tents and most starved to death with out even some basic treatment.

3. Current evidence: Is it very hard to evidence that TPLF embazzles aid resources? All aid resources are still channeled through REST which makes aid money instrument of subjugation and a political wipon to silence the distitute. It is still a major source of money for TPLF. This is not only a public knowledge but also to international organizations engaged in such activities including world food programm. I also don't think that this is concealed from American and UK governments.

Dear Ambassador,

You should be open to the truth. Otherwise, you will be among those who have blood in their hands. When you are trying to hide their misdeeds, it only shows your attemps to be loyal to the system. But, I don't think you will earn their respect. You are discrediting yourself as our ambassador for a tracherous act that happened in the jungle. Ethiopia is very unlucky to be represented with people who doesn't have integrity and respect to themselves.

This is a very good lesson that some in the Ethiopian opposition both in Ethiopia and abroad are extremely deceitful.

I am sure the Western media has learnt its lesson.

Since you brought it up, can you tell us your side of the story, "...from 25 years ago..."?

Well, who was in the first place anounced to the world that Ethiopians (Tigrians) are in a shocking hunger? It was BBC. Who was behind the aid campaign along with Bob Geldof? It was BBC. Who was behind the controversy of overthrowing Dergue? It was BBC and MI5. Who was brokering the weapons deal? It was MI5. The BBC knows where the money has gone and its their duty to reveal behind the curtain story. Woyanes are tyring to pretend that they are "KIDUS". Its a matter of time everything will be revealed.

Do you have any idea what tplf would have done to this BBC reporter if he were to be Ethiopian. They would have raped his family, tortured him(crush his testicles...a favorite form of torture for men,) make him admit wrong doing and write apolog. Then hold a kangaroo court drama for a few days and condemn him to death.

Bob Geldof is defending such a system. What a fool!

What makes me wonder is why Sir Bob Geldof defensive? to me he sounded like he has something to hide. We all know Mr. Zenawi is groomed by the CIA to replace the hated durg.If you are telling me that the Meles group defeated the DURG I doubt it.It was all the work of the CIA and it propaganda machine including the sweet deal for Mengistu to flee the country with millions to safety. These and some other situation gave them a free ride to Addis.

You can try to smear the good name of the greatest leader in Africa but it is to no avail. Leaders like Meles (the magnificent) comes only once in a while and when they come they come to change the world.

Some of these slanders we read above are written by people who had never read a book in their lives, who never had higher learning and in short are clueless idiots with only a village mentality. Think universally dudes, the world is not moving around your Amara villages.

I know tribalism is the biggest sickness in Africa and you suffer a lot from this sickness. Otherwise how could anyone 24/7 oppose this great leader Ethiopia had ever seen. Other African countries would have been delighted of him. But since you suffer of tribalism you can't see any thing he does in a good light. You can not support anyone if he is not an Amhara and yet you are the one to shout anti tribalism slogans day and night.

Meles The Great "forgive them for they know not what they are doing!"

The BBC relies on funds from license fees from the residents of Great Britain to bring honest journalism to the masses. The credibility of the BBC has been improved, by reporting the corruption of aid money being diverted to the TPLF rebels 25 years ago. We look forward to more honest reporting from the BBC to bring to light the current abuse of the same rebel group who is holding government office today in Ethiopia. Over the past couple of weeks I have spoken to many British citizens who are appalled at what happened 25 years ago, many did not realize that the same rebel group being funded is the regime in power today, and are not suprised to learn the same diversion of foreign aid money is happening today. They would also agree that Bob Geldof is outraged because his reputation has been tarnished, having received international fame and a knighthood for his efforts.
The BBC has already let Bob Geldof know they would not accommodate his request, then why would the BBC apologize to the Ethiopian Regime when the people of Ethiopia are constantly suffering injustice and military oppression at the hands of the same regime. Ethiopian children are being exported like a commodity to finance the regime, Ethiopian farmers are being evicted from their own land, so the regime can benefit themselves and their alien partners while the poor farmer is forced to work for wages below the poverty threshold, the riches of Ethiopia are being divided between the oppressive military regime of Ethnic federalism and the Billionaires club, whilst the majority of Ethiopians are being neglected because they do not have a Government which is willing to serve its peoples. Any one with intellect knows from history that a government that does not serve its citizens will crumble easily.
"Ethiopia harbours no ill-feeling towards any. She seeks to live in peace and harmony with all.
But let him who would despoil the Ethiopian nation beware. Let him think, and think again. Our policy is clear; our position is sound; our determination is unshakeable. We are a united people, spared from tribal differences. For all this We thank Almighty God." Bond
Is
"Melles is the greatest leader in Africa"
It is really very funny!!!
Who brought ethnicity to our country?
Who divided the country in several ethnic groups?
Who made our country landlocked?
Who killed civilians everywhere in the country( Addis Ababa , Gambella, Somalie, Awassa, Bahirdar ETC…?)
Who hates majority of the people that he is “leading”?
Who is deliberately bombing in Addis Ababa?
Who is the thief of public vote of 2005?
Melles is dishonest and cheat leader in the history of Ethiopia! Yes he used pretexts! He has no moral and charisma to our nation. We hate him because he is cheat , dishonest and racist!
Bond,
Who cares for the tribe of the leader? At least for the true Ethiopians it has no value. The problem is you and some others are defeated by the pretext of Melles and TPLF. It is their strategy. To wait in power they are playing this stupid game. They tried to pull Tigrians and they succeeded it. You all are supporting him with only due to your tribe. You can answer the above questions abd adjust your direction if you are genuine . But pointing your ethnicity problem towards the true Ethiopians is non sense.
We have never seen such a leader, cheating the world by changing his tachtic and stratagy for his evil duty.
He is shame for Ethiopian history.

All things considered, this has to be the lowest point in Ethiopia's history since one of those substance-abusing illegitimate past kings, who would provoke war with neighboring countries after abusing illicit substance like tobacco. An ambassador in London used to be symbolic, an ambassador of ambassadors: regal, righteous, honored and a high point. In a time of upside down which this world has come to be, I guess nothing is shocks anymore. Not to worry, though, unrepentant liers and looters, and their associates come to bad end. You can count on it.

I thought Geldof trained meles alone how to become a dictator .. Instead of coming up with an evidence to counter the claim that is being made, even the so called ambassador came out in defence of tplf ? It's amazing Geldofand tplf the burden of the proof is on you. Proveide the evidence that shows how $100 million US had been used while one million people died of starvation. You can not be dictators of what the BBC has to report to the public. BBC is not in today's Ethiopia. Geldof you are losing the shred of good will Ethiopians and the rest of the World would have given you while you are acting like an arrogant dictator who tries to hide the truth .. just like meles. My advise to the ambassador.."Isn't it time for you to flee like your predecessors?" .. "Truth will always prevail always!"
