Ethiopian clerics seek constitutional ban on homosexuality

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — Religious leaders in Ethiopia on Monday urged lawmakers to amend the country's constitution to ban homosexuality in a move they argue could further strengthen existing codes.

At a meeting in the Ethiopian capital, nearly a dozen religious figures, including heads of Ethiopia's Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, adopted a resolution against homosexuality, which they termed as "the pinnacle of immorality."

They also blamed homosexuality for the rise in sexual attacks on children and young men.

"This is something very strange in Ethiopia, the land of the Bible that condemns this very strongly," said Abune Paolos, the patriarch of Ethiopia's Orthodox Church.

"For people to act in this manner they have to be dumb, stupid like animals," he told reporters. "We strongly condemn this behaviour. They (homosexuals) have to be disciplined and their acts discriminated, they have to be given a lesson."

Homosexuals can be jailed for a minimum of six months in Ethiopia, where hostility towards gays is high and sexual practices are very conservative.

But while homosexuality is illegal under the country's penal code, it is not mentioned in the constitution.

"We urge parliamentarians to... endorse a ban on homosexual activity in the constitution," the resolution read.

It also urged the government to establish more rehabilitation centres and to place strict controls on the distribution of pornographic materials.

The head of local NGO United for Life Ethiopia said homosexuality was not a human rights issue.

"Here we don't believe that it is and we don't believe that it is related to creation -- it has no biological base," head Sium Antonios said.

"It is unacceptable, it is immoral. Every religious leader said in one voice that it is the pinnacle of immorality," he added.

I believe this is a great joint move by religious leaders. Even though there are not that many under-cover gay Ethiopians, for the leaders to be proactive and try to enforce this a constitiutional ban to this act is something they should be given all the credits. This, of course, is "a pinnacle of immorality".

But it is to be seen whether Meles who is rumored to have a love affiar with Al-amoudi would support it. Let time reveal it.

There are so many other issues that put Ethiopian young women and young kids endanger. The rape issue widely spread in our society and soon destroys Ethiopian as a society. More than a guy subject we should speak up about the abuse of the women, the abuse of innocent babies. For me gay is a list problem for that country or this church …to make it clear i am not endorsed or against it….our church should work on the issue I list…
1. Rape is the heights problem in our country and destroys our sister and including very young babies. as a society we are not discuss this issue our people don’t want talk about it, so do the victim afraid to speak up… sometimes a few courage women speak about it or come upfront, society look at them down or society blame them for the incident.
2. Child rap is the worst cream I heard in that country. A number of rape rise up more and more every year…At the matter of face I read this issue (child rap as young as 2 years old). The people who do this crime should be jailed or killed… abusing a very innocent child should not be tolerated in whatever way or shape.
3. Early baby girl marriage is one of the very sad traditions we have that should be stop.
4. Prostitution is the other issue this church should work on it. Our young sister from south to north from east to west immigrates to Addis to seek a better life but they ended up in the street of Addis selling their body. It makes me sad to see these young kids ended up to this kind of life styles.

The church should educate our people on the unnaturalness of homosexuality rather than be the one who will cast the first stone at homosexuals. Our unholy abune has no moral right what so ever to bring back to Ethiopia the Spanish Inquisition and start burning any body that might have a different sexual preference.
It is much more sinful when a patriarch of the Ethiopian church becomes a fanatic tribal chauvinist, the slave of money and a paid politician, supporting and working for a dictatorial regime, than a person who thinks that it is his personal right to do whatever he wants with his own body. This is hypocrisy on the part of the abune and others. Who knows what these church leaders are doing in their castles, far from the public eyes, after a feast of raw meat and the most expensive whisky? Let’s not forget the boys and girls that were raped by the leaders of the Catholic church and others!
Homosexuality existed from ancient times, and may be it was much more common in ancient societies before the birth of Christianity, which most probably taught people that homosexuality is not a normal behaviour for male and female. The present trend in the west, as we all know is, unfortunately, beyond simple homosexuality the right for gay marriage.
Confrontation will not help. Educating people may be more effective. Ethiopians are a conservative society and they can easily be persuaded by our revered elders and church leaders, of course, not by the abune, to be far from such a behaviour which is morally inappropriate and socially detrimental.

Well, sweety, the patriarch being from Tigray is not that much of a problem for me, personally. Although, using TPLF LOGIC (ethnically arguing) it does not make sense since Tigray is a minority and he should not be leading the majority.

All of this is simple. Look at wealthy, advanced, progressive, educated, and well-adjusted countries which are open to sex and sexuality--Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, etc. They have the lowest HIV/AIDS rate; women give birth in their 30s--when mature and better prepared to raise a child. Look at conservative, religious, oppressive countries which consider sex and sexuality to be more of a shame than something natural--and you get high HIV rate, teenage pregnancy, which leads to poverty and so on--many African, Arab, Asian, and Latin American countries.
Ethiopians are of the Judeo-Christian background. We look at sex like it's bad unless it is about pro-creation. Well, where has that gotten us so far compared to, say, the Scandinavian? But falling in love with the same gender does not mean you're less than or "satanic". If any of you really knew gay people, you wouldn't have this opinion. You sound like Americans and Europeans used to be like a hundred years ago. Let's now move to discuss real issues. Like the fact that there are 4 million orphans in our beloved country. We face over 90% deforrestion BECAUSE OF population pressure, which leads to soil erosion, which leads to salinzation of the land, which leads to drought, flooding, and so on. Let's discuss solutions, not insults and talking about what people do in their bedrooms. It's sick people who abuse children, and it has nothing to do with your sexuality.

First of all, why should some body's sexual orientation be so threatning to you!? Have you ever opened your eyes and seen the fact that most of the clergies around the world are homosexuals (as some indicated above)? (I know this is too much for you to even imagine). I know, by this time you are thinking that I am gay because I speak for them, but the truth of the matter is that we all the victim of the bloody society we live in, so we are programed to thing the way we do since our childwhod, thefore, I refrain from blaming you. However, just try....try to think that homosexuality or other uncommon behaviours are as old as Jesus Christ himself, if not older. The society has nothing to lose because some people are gay, after all, why do you care about who sleeps with whom?
