EDP limits term of office

The newly renamed Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP) in its fourth general assembly decided to limit the term of the party's president to a maximum of two years on Monday.
At a press conference given by party leaders on Thursday, it was disclosed that the president will only serve a maximum of four years if he is elected twice.
The current president, Lidetu Ayalew, was reelected for another two-year term at the end of which he must be replaced by another president when the party holds its next general assembly.
The assembly also elected Sofia Yilma as vice president and Mushe Semu as Secretary General of the party.
The party, which used to be called EDUP-Medhin until Monday, was renamed EDP, retaining its original name.
The assembly decided to reduce the number of members of the party's central committee from 25 to 23 and that of the executive committee from 9 to 7. The assembly decided that it is unnecessary to include heads of the social and research committees as central committee members.
During the course of the general assembly, party members discussed an 18-item agenda and took position on each of the items.
The party congress concluded that except for the ruling party, no other opposition party has the organizational structure that can make it a strong contender.
The EDP has defined itself as a center-right party compared to the ruling party and other ethnic based parties which are more of center left that focus primarily on group rights rather than individual rights.
Lidetu said that the EDP follows the liberal democracy which leans to the rightist ideology, while EPRDF follows revolutionary democracy which is left leaning.
During the course of the press conference, Lidetu said that the ruling party feels insecure, which leads it to desperately hang on to power.
He blamed opposition parties for making the ruling party feel insecure as they used to threaten to demolish the party once they assumed power.
"How can you expect EPRDF to hand over power through a peaceful election while you're threatening to dissolve it when you come to power? How can that party willingly hand over the power to you knowing that you're going to wipe it out?" Lidetu asked.
