Ethiopian family opens a new Coffee Shop in Anacostia

During the biggest recession since the Great Depression, a local Ethiopian family is bucking the trend. They are poised, Monday morning, to open a new coffee shop.

And they’re choosing to do it in the poorest neighborhood in Washington, D.C.: Anacostia.

Big Chair Coffee is located across the street from the landmark Big Chair which has been part of the landscape in Anacostia since 1959. The 19.5-foot-tall chair was erected as an attention-getter for a furniture company. The business is long gone, and many other shops in Anacostia are closed.

I wish the owners the best of luck in their venture.
I mustsay, being myself a few years ago a business owner, there is nothing like having your own business. Then again you have to give it your whole attention. It is your other child.

From what I heard, Home Land Security is moving in that area soon, BIG TIME. The neighboorhood will change. I was talking to a friend over the phone the other day, she was trying to get me to buy some property there. I didn't do so because I don't believe in long distance ownership. But this family is smart, they might end up with the last laugh.

Good Luck! I am worried about the business plan.. Being married to one for 18 years and after 30 years of residing in this beautiful country I can assure you that African Americans traditionally are not coffee drinkers. I would like for you to be creative and serve soul food on Sundays
Like.... Soul Brunch.. Buffet for $12.99... I highly doubt church going AA will be attracted to coffee or will have any interest to watch "Ethiopian coffee" ceremony. Just trying to help! Will come and visit
