Ethiopian parties agree rules for 2010 polls

ADDIS ABABA — (AFP)
Ethiopia's ruling party and the main opposition groups in parliament agreed to an electoral code for next year's polls, an opposition official told AFP Wednesday.

The code sets out campaigning, voting and party symbol guidelines as well as how to deal with intimidation and violence, abuse of office and corruption.

It also includes the setting up of a panel to handle election disputes.

"The agreement was reached on consensus by all participants after two months of negotiations," said Ayalew Chamiso, head of the opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy party (CUD).

"The agreement enables the elections to be carried out in a peaceful, fair and free manner," added Ayalew, whose group is an offshoot of an eponymous party that won an unprecedented number of seats in 2005 elections.

The All Ethiopian Unity Party and the Ethiopia Democratic Party also agreed to the rules, according to the state television.

But the Forum for Democratic Dialogue in Ethiopia, a coalition of eight parties which had said key elements on security and freedom of expression and movement were not included in the code, was left out.

Ethiopia's last elections in 2005 ended in chaos, with nearly 200 people killed during a crackdown on opposition protesters who accused Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's party of rigging the vote.

The Horn of Africa country has set May 23, 2010 as the provisional election date.

"..Democratic Dialogue in Ethiopia... was left out..."

Correct me if I am wrong...but, isn't this group invented by the former TPF personalities (Gebru, Siye and Bedaso Gedada [sorry I do not know how to spell this dude's name] etc. etc.).....Looks like they do not want back to the pariliament - probably they are borde|-|!

We need to bring back the "Nega while I am dreaming" bunch.

Any hooo, I will gladly give my vote for "Ayalew Chamiso|-|" .....Wait, wait...isn't Ayalew Chamiso a father of Lidetu Ayalew....Oh Shittt, forget them, I will vote for Ababa Mesfin Woldemariam - In 2005, the prof had almost a million suporters in Addis alone. Just a couple of Weeks ago, I saw his pic on The Reporter demonstrating together with five "Ye Sefer Lijoch" outside while the Siye group having meeting......I really really feel sad for him....What a Loooooooooser!!

One more thing - I do have a "Geda Green Card" from Oromia, am alowed to vote? - Qorqoro, Can you help me out on this issue - please!

This news made me wonder whether Tsegaye Tedesse has found a new sanctuary in AFP. Since when Ayalew Chamiso become the "main opposition party leader" in Ethiopia? The entire nation knows that he is one of the main donkeys of meles zenawi in the parliament which obviously the reporter of Afp doesn't know. Ato Ayalew, you are nothing but a rodent who is profiting on the pain of the Ethiopian people. Yete'tamemew Wogebih ba'Ayalew Yiseber, ante Asama!

For the comin 50 to 100 years, TPLF will never transfer power to any opposition or parties in the so called ethiopian empire. This is fact; even meles himself told the parlements many time.

The above article does not make any sense to me. It is just a polotical propaganda as always.

Unless it is fair election where media is free and oppositions could meet and discuss their issues and twig election plat forms and how to let public know what they could do for them why go for a run!

It is iether fair or let him run by his own just like Mengistu, Mogabi and many other dectators did.

I hope Meles will be fair from today or they just walk out of parlament to seek other avenue. It is furstrating when you go in the office to just support and clap but do nothing for the public who elected you.

It is foolish to go in and clap, but have no part in making decision for your country.

If it is not fair all oppossition members are just there for money and that is what it kills democracy!

Yes, people like Yeha, and Z-Mike will jump to accuse me of anti Ethiopian and so on!

If election is fair why will it be fight on the street! There won't be!

Instead boosting millitary to kill anti dectator fix the system!

If I was one of the MP's I would ask for all MP's willingly not to eat.
Stay in parlament and duke it out how they should help the starved people. I am sure they will make educated and expeirnced decision. They will stop the politics of controls and regulation how the food should be distrubuted based on party menber or ethnic. It is time to open the door wide spread and allow anyone to help and then run for election.
Some do not know what it means when you are hungry some forgot what it is to be hungry.
It is time to feed with no condition!
Today is the day for all stop their political strip and feed the people.
Yeha, Z-Mike and likes are only interested for all famine to be solved by Meles only!

Jesus never said to the hungry multitude just listen to me forget about your hunger. He provided what they eat and then thought them!

If not walk out let him have the Parlamemnt for himself. Once he is not any more ligitimate in the eyes of Wester countries his ass will be burning. It is time for all to give altimative and stick to issue until it is resolved.

I was thinking about one election day during derg era. I remember I was forced to vote even while I was on the road for completely strange contestants.
The situation I observed was interesting. When people were voting 'Big brother' was watching openly. Even if you vote for the other party 'by mistake', the invisible guy will come out and 'talk' to you about the wisdom of your vote.
They were rooting for 100% at the time. I think we are watching the same scenario here.
Election in Africa is sad and funny!!!!!!!!!The amount of money we are spending on these elections might build some thing for our people or close lots of open mouths.
Like the diseases we are told generated from Africa by civilized world, we are genuinely exporting our 'impeccable voting culture' to many parts of the world.
‘An election is coming. Universal peace is declared, and the foxes have a sincere interest in prolonging the lives of the poultry. ‘

In 2005 Ellection
Meles should know that he is rul¬ing with¬out a man¬date. He has maximum only 20% sup¬port in Ethiopia. That does not reflect pop¬u¬lar¬ity. The peo¬ple elected and voted in large num¬bers for change. A change that would have seen CUD would have been elected government to lead. Meles staled the elec¬tion. This man has no shame. His greed and thirst for power has destroyed any sem¬blance of moral san¬ity in him. We do have a med¬ical prob¬lem here, No man in his right senses would take his peo¬ple down the road of into ethnic division and at last civil war. But Meles is just a man. He can be stopped indeed. There are those who can stop him. And they should do so in the name of the peo¬ple. The peo¬ple want change. They want an end to this polit¬i¬cal night¬mare which has made them even poorer.
The west¬ern gov¬ern¬ments are not pre¬pared to help the people of Ethiopia, but a dictator with gun who will go out to do dirty job. They will if they see many go out to show their out cry and have peaceful demonstration from west to south from south to north to show their being chocked. The peo¬ple should rise up peace¬fully and demand an end to MELES’s rule. The world will be watch¬ing. The world would sup¬port any peace¬ful protest and Meles knows when that hap¬pens, he has no choice but to depart after a little fight. UGD, Medreck what¬ever polit¬i¬cal affil¬i¬a¬tions you have, it really doesn’t mat¬ter. You are all vic¬tims of this mad man’s deter¬mi¬na¬tion to use any means at his dis¬posal to stay in power. Don’t be fooled by his rhetoric. You should know by now that none of his rhetoric has pro¬duced any¬thing fruit¬ful.
The peo¬ple will con¬tinue to suf¬fer if they don’t stand up and stop this man. He is not pre¬pared to hand over power with benig¬nity and respect. He is a dic¬ta¬tor, and dic¬ta¬tors have a ten¬dency to cling on to power come what may. Dic¬ta¬tors only look after their own inter¬ests and the inter¬ests of those who sup¬port their mani¬a¬cal polit¬i¬cal agenda.
Should we just roll on our back like a looser dog and say help me lord Meles or should we stand up and tell him it is time for fairness weather it disadvantage 6 to 10% of population temporarily it is time for change. It is time for all opposition parties to join hands and say the game is over.
True Ethiopian’s, you should not allow this. When a man does not have respect for the rule of law or deci¬sions taken by the courts of Ethiopia, he is just unfit to rule. When a leader dictate the court and use military to stay in power he is TRUE DICTATOR. You are a peo¬ple who have tasted suf¬fer¬ing for far too long. Stand up and demand an end to this dictator’s mad¬ness and reclaim your beau¬ti¬ful coun¬try
The first demand should be free Birtukan your leader and then free speech and free movement! Asking for it is not just enough, but if not accepted since it is stopping democracy then you must stand up and leave the parliament of mockery.
Yes, Yeha, Z-Mike and likes will be jumping up and down since it is not benefiting them or their likes. All they care is for Tigray and all the people who allow only EPDRF to say in power for their own advantage that is it! Those people we call them opportunistic and greedy! In no meanse I am supporting for Tigary to be looked down or attached, but nor do I support special status to any ethnic.
2005 is gone but 2010 is coming for us to not be fooled again!
It is time!

have successfully recycled themselves through sham elections time after time.Simply because there is no real government, it is practically a single party which rules by an unnounced(hidden) Martial Law. The judiciary system, the legislative system; the police, and other security apparatus including the military force are under the robotic control of the party in power.
The current political diaspora in Ethiopia is much to do the Western Powers as it is with the Ruling Party of Meles. It is their interest to keep him alive and well, because this man is deligently implementing some of their foreign policies. They brought him to power, they sustain him in power by shading away opposition parties and through financial assistance, and now it is highly militerizez itself. This repressive regime will not fall as it keeps mutating but fortunately there is only one solution to it. It is not through direct confrontation, but by creating a rfit with the Western powers. That is by waging widespead riot on Western Embassies to the extent which may force them to pullout from that country.

Every comment or suggestion seems based on hate and ethnicity. If your problem about the Ethiopian government is its ethnicity, I think you need to grow up. Every one of you keep complaining about how bad the government in Ethiopia is but none of you are acknowledging the great things happening in Ethiopia. If you don’t have the decency and the will to take responsibility on what is going on in Ethiopia, I think you all are leaving in a shadow.
All this opposition parties didn’t help our country with education, agriculture, or anything to move us to the top. The only thing they have been doing is feeling up their pockets. We all can cry about it but the fact remains the same. Do something positive first. Our people need us so badly
Ethiopia is moving forward with education, infrastructure and trying to reduce hunger. For those of you who are blaming the government of hunger in Ethiopia, you need to check your own self.
America the richest country in the world is in a recession; do you think Ethiopia should have enough food to feed the hungry? Ethiopians who are abroad couldn’t even be able to help their families, friends and neboughhoods. I think all of you have some kind of mental health problems.
Instead of talking trash, do something nice to your own people. Stop making up excuses and start helping. American’s are helping Ethiopia. Hospitals, schools, farmers need your help. Change doesn’t come just by talking. Do your deed and people will notice you.
