I have been trying to understand the rational behind the claim of many Ethiopians that the ports in Eritrea belong to Ethiopia. I am trying to understand the historic or legal claim to those ports.

For those of you who are only interested in name calling and insults, please do not reply. For those that have civil and respectful input, please reply as I would like to hear what you have to say.

daniel,there's no mystry to your question as to the ownership of assab!Sure it belongs to eritriya as far as the UN is also concerned with.BUt the fact remains ethiopia's future and existance demands it that it have a reliable port(asab).Inorder to achieve that,as much as esayas and meles hate each other's guts,they have to work out a solution that benifits both countries,and at least for the sake of lasting peace saying bygones be bygones.I see a couple of viable scenarios such as leasing assab for 50 or 100 years,a la djbouti to french.Or perhaps Eritriya might just choose to out right sell asab to ethiopia since it's of most importance that the two sisterly countries live with each other in a lasting peace.
If none of that pan out, there's such a thing as annexing assab since perhaps the majority of affar people would rather join ethiopia if asked to chose a side between the two countries.The reason as to why it's extremely important for ethiopia to secure assab back is because,ethiopia is the only landlocked country in the world with the highest number of population at 80 million and that's even supposed to reach 150 million in twenty years time.The country Ethiopia even with the support of world powers cannot and will not be able to sustain these many people even with the help of world powers.Therefore ,the benifit of getting assab back by any means necessary outweighs the risk of faceing the UN's security council rath and the two countries going back to War once more !!

How does that even sound rational in any way? Would you be wiling to give up some of Ethiopia’s resources to another country even if it is for compensation for the sake of peace?

The question of the Afar people has no validity what so ever. The Afar and the Tigre people are one of the most patriotic Eritreans out there. Any idea that they would turn their back on who they are is insane. Remember, all of Eritrea had DID choose indepenadnce during the UN monitored referendum. That includes the Afar and every other ethnic group in Eritrea. Are they or most Eritreans happy with the current situation in Eritrea? No they are not. But that does not mean that they would rather be anything other than Eritrean.

Wouldn’t it be smarter for Ethiopia to stop selling its fertile lands to foreigners, control its population growth, and make wiser investment within the country instead of wishing for a port that does not belong to it?

The rational behind the creation of the country called Eritrea is simple and if you look at the history of the people in what it now known as Eritrea you can see why. Despite what many Ethiopians believe, we are not Ethiopians. This is not meant as a matter of disrespect, but as a matter of fact.

Of course the Tigrinya ethnic group in Eritrea and the tigray ethnic group in Ethiopia have common ancestors, but that is the extent of the common links between the two countries.

As far as the Afar people, please look at my previous comment. The Afar people have made their choice. First with their guns during the war of independence, then once more during the referendum. They are as much Eritrean as every other ethnic group in the country.

So you are basically telling me that all this talk about Asab has nothing to do with the port, and everything to do with “respecting the self determination of the Afar people”?

We both know that’s BS so why not just either be honest about the issue, or not reply to my question all together?

Honestly speaking, Article 39 of the Ethiopian constitution is one of the best article ever exist. It should be written in Gold and worth to die for.

We need to admit that the Oromo brothers & sisters were/are the most oppressed, ridiculed & abused ethnic groups in Ethiopia. Their right for self determination has to be respected and guaranteed - PERIOD!! However, such a right can not be put on a silver plate for criminal organizations such as OLF & ONLF. To go forward, true owner must be advised and asked i.e. the poor Oromo people must/ shall decide their future! How & when?- I do not have answer for that.

Personally though, I am here asking the entire Oromo brothers and sisters for their forgiveness - Sorry, on behalf of my ancestors, for the unfair treatment!

All that respect that you are talking about (in terms of culture, people, language, etc) are enjoyed by every ethnic group in Eritrea, including the Afar. That’s why there is no ethnic or religious tension in Eritrea. In terms of ethnicity, everyone is treated the same, has access to the same education, health care, and social services. Weather someone is pro or against this government that we have, ethnic marginalization is not anyone can ever accuse them of. I am there every year, I have seen what I am talking about with my own eyes. This isn’t too say that things in Eritrea are not bad at all. Eritrea has its own set of problems and we have a long way to go to make it a better place for our children. Its just that whatever problems we have, we have them all as Eritreans, regardless of our ethnicity.

The dream of the Afar, Kunama’s, or any other ethnic groups is the same. That is to live in peace and prosperity in their homeland that they and/or their ancestors have fought for. To watch their children and grand children grow in a democratic prosperous and peaceful Eritrea.

If you think that the “invention” of Eritrea is bogus and was invented by one ethnic group you know nothing about Eritrean history. Look up who the first people to fight for the independence of Eritrea were. Every ethnic group fought and sacrificed for a united, independent, and free of foreign occupation Eritrea. It would have been impossible for Eritrea to be independent if not for the contribution of every ethnic group.

If this was not the case, there would be a civil war in Eritrea right now as there is in southern Ethiopia. Just like the current Eritrean government is supporting the ONLF and OLF in their agenda, the Ethiopian government would be doing the same in Eritrea. They are already hosting and financially supporting Eritrean opposition groups. The only difference is that most of these groups want to replace the current government, not secede from Eritrea. If there was a desire from even a small fraction of one ethnic group to be independent from Eritrea, then there would be a supportive community to carry out there agendas from. They would have a home base that would offer them some measure of safety. That’s why organizations like the OLF and ONLF have been around for so long (over 25 and 35 years respectively) and the current Meles lead government has been unable to defeat them
