Television pictures of three-year-old Ethiopian Birhan Woldu's emaciated face became the iconic image which moved the world to one of its greatest ever acts of charity.

But 25 years after Michael Buerk's broadcasts from Ethiopia's 1984 famine, Miss Birhan said the kind of food handouts which once kept her alive are today failing Africa's poorest.

"Twenty-five years ago, my life was saved by Irish nursing sisters who gave me an injection, and food from organisations like Band Aid," said Birhan Woldu, now 28.

"So it may seem strange for me to say now that to get food aid from overseas is not the best way.

"As well as being demeaning to our dignity, my education has taught me that constantly shipping food is costly, uneconomic, and can encourage dependency."

Prompted by Mr Buerk's BBC reports, and others in Canada and the US, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure gathered international pop stars for the 1984 Band Aid single Do They Know It's Christmas and the Live Aid concert in 1985.

The starving people don't bother Meles Zenawi. He will use their hunger as means to beg for more aid.

It's a good business for him. The bipolar prime minster will go around telling world leaders that he is making progress in combating hunger and that he just needs a little bit more financial support to save milions from death.

That is how it has worked for him for nearly 18 years and he plans to continue. He is unfazed by their suffering.

I wonder why the previous and the current regimes do not give priority to stabilize this kind of human catastrophe. I dont know why these people are against us, ethiopia, they lie. the thing is like this. yesterday, 22nd OCT, i was watching the news from BBC and there was a short report from Mekelle on this particular issue. they were showing the very disgusting pictures of 1984 drought instead of showing the truth. there were some interviewees, talking in some unknown language, the reporter said the report is from mekelle but he was lying, he took the report from Amhara region or somali...and at the same time today, there was a report by the same person from mekelle, he said this drought parallels with that of 1984 and the interviewees were confirming this. i was annoyed, the people speak in amharic, and were saying they dont have a government. he says they are from tigray.... but everybody know the drought in this yr is not that much bad, it can not be compared with that of 1984......crazy people.. dont trust bbc people.

Ethiopia is the highest water getting country in the world every year but Ethiopia is also the poorest of poor country in the world. Something is wrong with our culture, religion and way of thinking and doing business in our country. The effort requires beyond the leader of the country who ever at Menelik palace, the entire population need to involve and scarify this generation to make it easy life for the next generations. There is no country except the Gulf countries prosperous with out one generation scarify. The Europeans did it, USA did it and China did it. I think Ethiopia should be the next the current generation be willing to do the same for the sake of the country. But to do this big project, the country needs an honest leader who can mobilize our nation for a higher call for the good of the country.
