'Greening Ethiopia' breaks a vicious cycle

03 Jun 2010 11:24:00 GMT

Source: Lutheran World Federation (LWF) - Switzerland (Department for World Service)

In Ethiopia local governments, the private sector and development actors have joined hands in replanting Ethiopia's once vast forests. The initiative is called Greening Ethiopia, and calls for focused efforts to conserve natural resources and reforesting as a response to the impacts of climate change which are becoming increasingly visible in the country. Among the pledges, Ethiopian Airlines stands out with their promise to plant one tree for each passenger.

LWF Ethiopia program has joined the movement, and has set an ambiguous target for 2010. Half a million trees shall be raised and transplanted in the different projects areas during the year. That implies some 100,000 trees in each project, almost double the normal annual target.

Ethiopia has seen a dramatic deforestation during the past decades. Over 90% of all energy consumption comes from biomass, and every year around one percent of the country's remaining forests are turned into charcoal and houses, or just burned to make room for the ever increasing need for more farmland.

As a result, peoples of the once green and forested highlands of Ethiopia are now struggling with food insecurity caused by severe soil degradation, decreasing harvests, disastrous erosion and reduced drought resistance. It's a situation which drives farmers to clear even more forests to feed their families - a vicious cycle, indeed.

Except from trying to reforest Ethiopia with actual tree planting, LWF Ethiopia is also approaching the problem from the other end by teaching farmers a sustainable land use. Improved agriculture practices reduce the need to cultivate more farmland. Soil conserving structures such as soil bunds around cultivated areas protect the lands from erosion during heavy rains, and let the soil keep it's moist in times of drought.

Tree planting, natural resource conservation and agriculture development are all fundamental parts of LWF Ethiopia's several Integrated Community Development Projects, assisting a few hundred thousands of Ethiopians to develop their communities and adapt to a changing climate. But they are also activities that have spilled over into the organization's refugee assistance and humanitarian projects, based on the belief that a sustainable environmental lifestyle is the key to reach food security, in the short and in the long run.

I always remember what our geography teacher had said on our school picnic, when I was in high school. “In this dry riverbed and its banks, there was abundant water and many trees just five yeas ago. Now the trees have disappeared and the river has dried up.”
Although these words echoed in to my ears, I did not know their significance then.
I consider myself among the lucky ones who were fortunate enough to live in a village as an elementary school student. The forest was not far away from our school, the savanna grass was so tall that we could hide in it. We attended school during the morning and afternoon hours. At launch, instead of going home we would choose to go to the nearest forest, collect fruits from trees and eat as much as we liked, and then we would return to school to play football until the bell rung for afternoon class. Those were the most beautiful years in my life. That was the true paradise lost.

Despite the hoopla of greening ethiopia the government is inshort fall of understanding the whole picture of defrostation. Poverty and starvation continue to out growth the existing over populations. The hyper inflation, the deflation of national currency, the price of foods and goods, the increasing cost of economic needs, the country inability to provided adequate energy power for citzens, the leasing and selling of our protected forests to forigen vendors for plantation, the complet mis-management and the luck of qualifyed personal for the proper position in TPLF-CABINET are the ultimate driving force behind deforestion beside unregulated human overpopulation who deprived all types natural resources

Deforestation is not new to Ethiopia. Less than 4% of the country was covered with trees 19 years ago when EPRDF came to power. To blame the current government for the deforestation of Ethiopia is not fair. The most constructive approach would be to findout what went wrong in the past, starting from the Time of Atse Minilik and devising a way to reverse the trend.

"The existence or non-existence of forest wealth in a country is one of the most important factors influencing its development and progress. The increasing pace of deforestation and the growing dearth of timber in Ethiopia, caused by unregulated tree-cutting and the failure to replace these with new plantings, gives Us occasion for anxiety that a severe economic problem will confront the coming generation. It is essential that steps be taken here and now to stop this wastage and to check this destruction." HIM Negus Haile Selassie

Ethiopia's problem gets bigger and more in kind with time. There are new problems which are created by woyane but deforestation was happening before woyane. Woyane did nothing to change it and even indirectly it aggravate the problem. All the regimes including woyane are to be blamed and we as individual have responsibility, we have to plant a tree at home or in the field once in a year, Ethiopia will be deseret in few years like sudan.

Kokeb,

Bingo!!! You hit the nail on the head.

By the way has the Derg not tried to do the same greening thing years ago, where everyone in a Kebele went out and planted a tree? And it did not work!!!
Make land ownership by Ethiopian individuals possible, try and curb population explosion, fight poverty,.... and these will be the real solutions for Ethiopia's disapearing forest.

Wubit [Visitor],
The Emperor of Ethiopia is the head of state, and shall always maintain that the Church is the head of Ethiopia. The Emperor shall remain King of Ethiopia as long as He liveth, then his son shall inherit the Crown which is reserved to the actual Dynasty. Our Blessed King Haile Selassie gave of his own freewill Ethiopia's first written Constitution which states,"'...the Ethiopian people must share the burden of responsibility which in the past was borne by the monarch...,'by this act We sought to disperse responsibility and authority among Our people, that they might exercise it, together with Ourself, in securing the advancement and the unity of the Ethiopian nation." HIM
"You all realize that it is necessary to have a sufficient number of men who would courageously and honestly accept responsibility and act under it, and, not counting the cost, discharge their duties to the Ethiopian nation. We have always held Ourself at the disposal of Our people and Our Ministers. And so Our Ministers came to Us with their problems and questions. Always We said: 'But the power has been given to you to do this yourself.' Frequently, Our words went unheeded. Responsibility was shirked, decisions were avoided and thrust back upon Us.
As a result, some programmes remained unimplemented, and other questions of major importance were left unanswered. The Government has been overwhelmed and benumbed by details. Among those who stand before Us, many have devoted years of service to the Imperial Ethiopian Government. You know the truth of what We say." HIM Negus Haile Selassie
Long Live the Solomon Dynasty!
For 3000 years of glorious history can never be overcome by 35 years of political corruption disrespecting the Church as the head of Ethiopia.

"Motivated by the teaching of Christ and by the words of St. Mark 'Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature,' We are happy to see that the Lutheran World Federation has succeeded in building and establishing a radio station in the capital of Ethiopia-the ancient island of Christianity-to spread the teachings of the Gospel to the peoples of Africa and to those of other countries. We thank the Almighty for the great services that the station has been rendering to Ethiopians and other Africans in particular. It is Our hope and wish that it will continue to be the light of the Gospel to many people for many years to come. In its great task, Our support and that of Our government has never been and will never be withheld." HIM Negus Haile Selassie
